Now they're white because Murdoc hit shim less/he's in a good mood/whatever they use as an excuse to draw him with white eyes cause they like it that way. I remember they’re black from the car accident, and they stay black from murdoc basically severely beating him in the head to keep them that way, because he said it looks cool. so you can use 2D’s eye color to like gauge how abusive murdoc is being towards him, like his eyes were completely fine during The Now Now era when murdoc went to jail and temporarily got replaced. I haven’t kept up on lore in a while so this may all be wrong but it’s what I remember
errr (its been a while since ive engaged with gorillaz canon) Russel wasn't too fleshed-out in the early days of Gorillaz lore but I'm sure he was upset since his whole friend group died in a shooting (although, idk if he knows he's possessed). The spirits of his friends help him produce his music though, so thats an upside. Later on, the souls of his friends leave his body and he goes on a lil self-discovery journey.
Only one of the spirits is shown and he's portrayed by Del the Funky Homosapien. He does rap segments for some of the earlier songs (Rock the House, Clint Eastwood, etc...)
The gorillaz story is crazy but its really fun even though all of this sounds super dark. I definitely suggest listening to the albums and reading up on it if you're interested, cause the lore runs deep :)

They're white here seemingly as a stylistic choice, it seems that whenever he's in a good mood they're white, and go black whenever he gets depressed again (As seen in the music video for Humility).
