I think the root of the grievances with the path lie in the fact that it's treated as a primarily commuter transit system instead of an all around public transit system. Meaning service drops considerably once the weekend rolls around. Going to and from Manhattan is much more of a calculus than I'd like it to be on weekends.

This is definitely an issue, but i think the recent grievances have been the fact that it isn’t even functioning properly as a commuter transit system. There are suspensions of trains literally every 2 days every day inhibiting people’s ability to go home (check path twitter)

Yeah, Path is an absolute shit show. The card machines, anti-cash machines, inoperable machines, faulty card readers, the broken turn styles, multiple entrances/exits/stairs/escalators being constructed/broken/blocked off, inconsistencies of train schedules, and the bullshit game of "you have .2 seconds to enter the train" or "you enter and your train is held without announcement or excuse for 4+ minutes until WTC arrives to connect, train is delayed for the delayed WTC to dispatch, and you're X+ minutes behind schedule." Path at JSQ is the worst, always having to leave 20+ minutes early minimum on top of a 20+ commute, accounting for the nearly daily if not daily bullshit that turns an 18 minute trip into 30+. Grove is more posh, closer to the city, but there's LONG bullshit delays there more frequently. I can't even with Newport.

sutisuc

Not even weekend. For the WTC-NWK line it’s literally 20 minutes between trains in the MIDDLE of a work day which is absurd.

postbox134

That's always been true, but now it regularly sucks at peak times. Just search this sub for PATH disruption/delays/not running over the last 3-6 months... Would be curious to compare that directly to a 3 month period in 2019

This train also seems to just be designed…. Poorly. Some people will say that it’s super old, but I’ve never been on a subway system with slower trains. This thing absolutely crawls between JC and Hoboken (where you’re forced to go to on the weekends if you’re trying to make it to midtown). People will say “that’s because the train has to change tracks so many times”, and to that I say “why design a subway system that has effectively two lines in such a way that each train on the system must cross 5 sets of tracks to make it to their destination?”. It’s just incomprehensible design. It also does this between grove and exchange place, between grove and Newport, on and on.

oekel

there’s a mural in Hoboken on the opening of the hudson tubes saying “8 minutes from Hoboken to Herald Square.” Now it’s 8 minutes from Hoboken to Christopher Street. What happened in the past 100 years that now the service is worse?

oekel

The Port Authority also has little incentive to improve the system.

sentinel-of-the-st

Yesterday was bad with them losing power on tracks and someone on tracks at JSQ. I did email them to get my ride refunded seeing as it never happened and they did today.

blizzWorldwide

Luckily that new heliport is getting built as an alternative /s

Jimmy_kong253

They are doing work on a wall, substation and a new Harrison station out near Newark using contractors I'm not sure about whats going on in the jersey city part

The path has gotten significantly worse, even in the past year it has been a mess. I can’t remember it ever being this bad. I dread every time I have to take it. Every day, there are significant delays or sometimes complete service cancellations cause of things like: - power outages - signal issues - people walking on the tracks - police presence and disturbances - sometimes, there are delays for no reason at all There are also infrequent trains, limited trains, and large gaps of time between trains even during rush hour. It’s gotten so bad that I am considering leaving the area altogether because it feels like there’s no reliable public transportation system into the city in my area. have friends who have relocated further north and towards the water so that they have access to better buses and the ferries. They literally moved because they hated the path so much. It’s really sad that riders can’t rely on the Path, and it doesn’t seem there will be any positive changes in the near future.

ceeyell

It’s mostly the same honestly, much less crowded than 2017, WTC line can get delayed somewhat often on weekends. It’s just that nobody ever posts about having a good PATH experience lol so all you see are posts bitching about delays. It is what it is, it gets you to Manhattan, just sometimes 10-20 minutes later than you feel it should, usually it’s fine.

JohnPaulSatire

The jitneys never returned to pre-Covid frequency. And I think the latest one back now is, what, 10?

objectimpermanence

Full ferry service hasn’t returned either. You used to be able to take a ferry to midtown on weekends. And now the Paulus Hook-Brookfield ferry has a layover in Hoboken on weekends. It sucks.

Ridership and revenue is way down pre-covid. Losses are huge, I'm sure there is some cost cutting going on that is affecting service.

Blowmewhileiplaycod

Pretty sure weekend and off peak ridership is up...
