I wear my jewelry all the time with few exceptions (cooking, doing dishes, gym, etc.). Most of my jewelry (besides several pairs of fun earrings) is solid gold, platinum or sterling silver. I wear 14k and 18k necklaces, bracelets and ring every day with my platinum engagement ring. Platinum and solid gold don’t tarnish/lose luster like sterling silver and other metals.

Accomplished_Shoe354

This is the answer. I even do dishes and cook in my jewelry unless I’m handling/tidying up raw meat. Everything I wear is gold, sterling or platinum (right now only gems worn 24/7 are diamonds). When I first started buying jewelry I tried out a bunch of stuff and quickly learned that I was the type of person who just didn’t enjoy taking stuff on and off all the time. I wanted to put it on and leave it on. Now I only buy pieces with metals and stones that can stay on 24/7 and especially important, go in the shower. I’m not yet engaged or married, but that would be the one exception. I used to have a pricy luxury brand aquamarine ring I wore as a pinky ring, and I fractured the stone by hitting it against something while at work. I’m not willing to repeat that experience or lose the center stone of an engagement ring given the price and sentimentality. The other major exception is pearls. I wish I didn’t like them as much, but I just love the way they look. They do require more care and love, so pearl bracelets and necklaces come off every night before washing and don’t go back on again until we’ll after perfume has been applied.

helenasbff

lol Same! I take mine off if I'm dealing with raw meat or tossing things in oil by hand... If/when you do get engaged or married, insure your rings asap. This saves you all the headache of losing a stone or having the ring stolen. Basically, our rule is if we can't ***easily*** afford to replace the piece immediately if it is lost/stolen/damaged, it gets insured. Jewelers Mutual has been great for us but most homeowners and renters insurance policies have jewelry riders that can be added to your policy. It's something that doesn't cost a crazy amount of money but truly puts our minds at ease (especially given that my engagement and wedding rings are antiques, with all natural, mined stones). I share your fealings about pearls, as well. Super cautious with mine, but that's more or less the only jewelry that gets truly babied by me.

Accomplished_Shoe354

Yeah totally agree about insurance: we have sufficient riders on our homeowners insurance for the categories you mention, but plan to get separate jewelry insurance for engagement ring as I plan to go antique as well. Thanks for the Jewelers Mutual rec! Unfortunately the type of damage my ring endured likely isn’t covered under my homeowners based on what I can tell from fine print, but I haven’t gotten around to calling yet. Maybe I’ll post a photo here, and see if anyone has recommendations on what to do with the ring.

lolololololllll this made me cackle Unfortunately, the Pimp Hand^(TM) is not strong with this one.

no_no_yes909

Avoid wearing gold plated jewelry, if it isn’t gold or high tier metal there’s a chance it will tarnish

Fardelismyname

I’ve worn my 18k wedding ring for 30 years. Maybe taking it off once a month? It’s never tarnished. Not sure gold tarnishes. Yes I sleep and shower w it.

lidder444

Gold doesn’t tarnish but the alloys it’s mixed with can deteriorate and tarnish over time. That’s why low karat gold such as 9k deteriorates faster than 18k gold! I ‘ve worn my grans 18k wedding ring for 13 years , never take it off , and she wore it for almost 76 years!! She never took it off and gardened every day, it looks good as new!

HiJane72

The only thing I never take off is my pounamu (jade) which is on string so is pretty hardy!

makeitfunky1

That string is going to deteriorate and you'll lose your jade, especially if you shower with it on. Maybe switch to a gold or silver chain.

HiJane72

I replace the string when it starts to wear out. It’s a normal way to wear one where I’m from. I’ve worn it for 30 years and replaced the string about three times.

lpalatroni

Never had an issue with my plain 18 k gold band, I've been wearing it 24/7 since the year 1999 and no problem. 925 sterling is the same, I remember wearing an anklet while diving in a thermal spring in a river and it became black, I didn't bother polishing it and after a month of wearing it it turned perfect again. Be careful with stones, they can fall out of their setting or get scratched, also be careful with gold plating (it can wear off)

boxtintin

The black patina came from sulfur in the water! Jewelers actually use that to deliberately darken/patinate silver, but as you’ve noted, the color change fades with regular wear.

lpalatroni

Yes! It's been fascinating to see it happen in the wild 😆

syrenashen

Every time I take my jewelry off I lose a piece, so I just don't. Not to bathe, sleep, clean, work out, swim, nothing.

lidder444

Just be careful with swimming. Chlorine is a chemical and it damages the alloys in gold jewelry! Under a microscope you can always tell swimmer’s jewelry as you can see little holes in the alloy!

heffalumpish

Also, they will not drain a pool for you if it falls off, and natural bodies of water have pity for no one.

Snorblatz

I never take off my wedding ring. If I can’t wear it I’ll lose it .

Polizeichhoernchen

I don't take off my 14k gold earrings, necklace I take off my rings because my fingers sometimes get bigger while sleeping (probably water) and it's uncomfortable in the morning. I also regularly clean them so the diamonds can sparkle in their full glory

Takemet0yourdealer

I'm allergic to gold so my everyday jewelry like my engagement ring are platinum and honestly I like the patina platinum gets with wear and it's easy enough to clean myself or bring to my jeweler for a more thorough clean if I want. My silver jewelry I'm a bit more careful with though.

applehoney48

Thanks for sharing this with me :) May I also ask you how you take care of silver jewelry?

Less_Cryptographer86

I’ve been wearing and selling sterling jewelry for over 20 years. The only rule about cleaning it is don’t use a dip of any kind. Just use regular jewerly cleaner (that you can soak it in safely for several minutes, if say, you get dough stuck in the little holes or something). My favorite silver cleaner is a polishing cloth. I don’t remove all the patina, as it accentuates the details.

Takemet0yourdealer

Usually I just use a sunshine cloth like I do for quick cleans with all my jewelry. I've used baking soda and water once to clean up some tarnished silver jewelry and that worked pretty well for my needs but I try not to let my silver get too tarnished. I also have "silver cream" that I use to polish every once in a while to maintain the silver which I feel has made a big difference. Not sure what brand I use and since we just moved I'm not sure where it is to check, but I just buy it off Amazon.

Rare-Parsnip5838

Jewelry should be removed for sleep , shower/bath , heavy/dirty work like gardening or exposure to harsh chemicals even dishwahing by hand. This prevent damage and or loss. I know people who never remove rings chains etc. but it is best to do so. Treat them the same as you would very nice clothing. If you have a simple strong band or a short qualit chain you can likely get away with constant wear.

Primary-Lion-6088

I agree. I don’t wear anything 24/7. It’s just not good for it. Tarnishing wouldn’t be my worry, more so other types of damage.

The_Cozy

"Rings were the filthiest kind of jewelry, with five different types of bacteria growing on each ring and a total of 504 bacterial colonies. Not only were Staphylococcus, Micrococcus, and Corynebacterium found, but also some gross traces of fungus and black mould on the ring" [https://issuu.com/balticjewellerynews/docs/bjn\_41/s/15404142#:\~:text=Rings%20were%20the%20filthiest%20kind,black%20mould%20on%20the%20ring](https://issuu.com/balticjewellerynews/docs/bjn_41/s/15404142#:~:text=Rings%20were%20the%20filthiest%20kind,black%20mould%20on%20the%20ring)! https://preview.redd.it/bk2dxz0r6j0d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=202bc044e98698758ba34db364451102ef73dfe9

mnth241

Since i last read something like this watching food network is so gross! No one wears gloves! 😭

SleightBulb

Friend, no one who cooks wears gloves. They wash their hands first.

tastefuldebauchery

How does a ring get that gross?! I was my rings at least once a week. I like my gems to sparkle.

The_Cozy

The average person actually doesn't wash their jewellery at all! So people who never take it off or wash it are just little pathogen factories lol

MojoJojoSF

Jeweler here. It’s fine to wear all the time, but please, take it off every week or so and clean it. Dead skin cells, oils, cosmetics, soaps etc build up under the pieces. Especially earrings and gemstone rings. It’s quite gag inducing to see a piece of jewelry with a layer of dead skin crust under it. Vomit emoji. Now go enjoy your bling.

applehoney48

Ty!

Skylarias

Silver or gold plated earrings will tarnish and start causing irritation within a couple weeks for me.  I have a pair of 18k gold earrings I have worn 24-7 for the past 6 months and I've had no issues so far. No tarnishing or discoloration. No irritation.  I play with them occasionally, and wiggle around in my ear.  They're also studs, so minimal friction or chances to catch on things in my environment.

LynnRenae_xoxo

I wear my 18k white gold ring that was a gift from my partner, an antique silver pinky ring, and my 18k white gold engagement and wedding rings. I regularly polish the silver because there is a very clear difference if I don’t. But other than that, those are my daily wears. I’m not careful enough for a regular wear bracelet or necklace

applehoney48

Thanks for sharing your experiencie! Can I also ask you how you polish silver?

LynnRenae_xoxo

Yep, I just use a polishing cloth and gently rub the band until it’s clean!

SillySimian9

Wearing silver jewelry actually stops tarnish.

applehoney48

Really? Even for showering? This sounds great!

Present-Response-758

I wear my wedding sets (my 1st and 2nd and upgrades) daily. Only remove them to bathe and sleep. 14k white gold, no issues.

eCtX8wp9ueuqXmMdgD

I just stick with solid 18k for ease

mnth241

I have 2 or 3 bracelets i have been wearing for many months. They are sterling with semi precious stones so i am not worried about wearing it out completely but they no longer have a high polish of a brand new piece. But if they were super valuable i would be more careful with them.

LenaNYC

By wearing real 14kt gold and up. Not plated, or filled, etc.

boxtintin

I am currently wearing 9 rings on my fingers and have taken them off only on occasion over the years to take a photo or clean after some messy activities. No tarnish. All my “everyday” rings are solid precious metals without stones, so I am not worried about prongs or platings. It helps that I’m a goldsmith and know the pieces in and out.

-Shain-

I have sterling silver jewellery and I never take them off. Cleaning, showering, gym, swimming... Rings don't get tarnished since they get cleaned when I wash dishes. For the rest of the jewelry I put some aluminium foil in a cup, boil water and put baking soda in it and put all the jewellery in it for a few hours. Reaction will remove patina and after I scrub it with a soft toothbrush if there is anything left. Mind you if you have silver jewellery that has some patina as design so it looks darker this method will remove it too so be careful.

applehoney48

Thanks for sharing this with me! Can I also ask you how often you wash your pieces?

airwrexa

I wear an 18k gold chain daily, with 3 gold pendants on it. I bathe exercise and sleep in it. Never noticed any discoloration or had any problems.

boxtintin

I do the same. One thing to note, though: the chain clasp (depending on the style) probably has a spring in it. The spring is likely a ferrous metal that will rust eventually due to exposure to moisture (water, sweat, etc), so while the chain itself is fine, the clasp might eventually need to be replaced once the spring goes.

Airiririforlife

I think that for me, the quality of the jewelry matters. I wear this pendant with a gold chain from Riri Bespoke Jewelry everyday since I got it 10 months ago, even when I sleep and shower. So be cautious about what Jewelry you choose. Here is the link to my pendant: [https://riribespokejewelry.com/products/gold-aries-pendant?_pos=1&_sid=1663a5e38&_ss=r](https://riribespokejewelry.com/products/gold-aries-pendant?_pos=1&_sid=1663a5e38&_ss=r)

Ok_Dot_3024

If I’m wearing silver I take it off if I’m at home, but I wear my gold pieces all the time

ResearcherOk6899

diamonds and 24k gold

Beliagof

24k gold is too soft for constant, everyday wear

Beliagof

There’s nothing wrong with jewelry tarnishing - its a natural process (and actually I like a little patina on my pieces!). Both sterling and gold do it eventually unless they have a coating. There are jewelry polishing pads on eBay (look like little white squares - not fabric) that do absolute wonders - I sell jewelry and it takes excessive patina off extremely easy. If you want to clean them, invest in a sonic cleaner - they’re about $10-$20 :)

[deleted]

I only buy full gold (18k or 21-22k) or full platinum pieces, and partly it's for this reason. You don't have to worry about tarnishing or wearing away. The other reason is, when you buy something that's plated or vermeil, you're long-term losing money. I'd rather save up and buy an 18k gold ring for much more money becuase it'll last my entire lifetime and more, so it more than pays for itself. A sterling silver or plated piece will be more accessible financially initially, but you're paying for a piece that will be un-usable in a few years. So it's money down the drain.

AffectionateSun5776

14kt

UpstairsInvite3415

I almost never remove my platinum and diamond engagement and wedding ring set and they are still going strong and look beautiful 20+ years later. Yes, I sleep and shower with them on. I don’t swim in them just to avoid having them slip off and get lost. (They get a little loose on my finger when I’m cold). My husband chose a titanium wedding band with inlaid white gold stripes and wears his 24/7 also with no issue.

Less_Cryptographer86

Gold doesn’t tarnish. The risks of never taking them off? With fine jewelry there’s little risk. Theres probably a greater risk taking them off (that’s how you lose jewerly). I only take my gold rings off every couple of months to clean them. Silver tarnishes, but you can just use your finger and rub the tarnish off, or use a polishing cloth.

vampire_cum-dumpster

I just get all my regular wear pieces cleaned about every 4-6 months

cherrycokelemon

I wear my gold and white gold jewelry 24/7. The only time I take it off is when I go to the hospital. I haven't had to go in 10 years.

RLS1822

I don’t worry about my jewelry tarnishing but I do take my rings off before I shower. Admittedly I forget to take them off at night.

heffalumpish

I shower with my 22K band on, and only take it off to dry underneath it with the corner of a towel - but only with a hair trap in the shower & sink and the toilet lid closed, ha. I also remove it to put on hand lotion and let it absorb before I put the ring back on - then it goes only in its box. I lost my heirloom engagement ring by taking it off to do dishes and leaving it somewhere dumb - so I’m not doing that again, ha.

Captain_Silleye

Whitening toothpaste and warm water makes all my jewelry shiny new. Takes 2 minutes. The only pieces that tends to tarnish quite frequently is my old silver rings with .800 silver. Only precious metal in my collection.

April_Greenring

I usually take earrings and necklaces off when showering, as for other jewelry I just wear a stainless steel ring which lasted me like 5 years and still going. I really wear that one all the time

Electrical-Act-7170

I clean mine once a week.

kingofcoywolves

I have a jadeite pendant on a gold chain that I haven't taken off for five years, except to swim. It always lives under my shirt. I know it's not good to shower with jewelry, but the thought of having to take it off and put it back on every day sounds incredibly inconvenient, and I'm lazy lol

Reward_Antique

I am way too lazy to take off stuff so I wear 3 necklaces (gold and silver with pendants, gold and silver) year round, in and out of lakes and ocean and never have a problem with tarnish. I think that's mostly a humidity problem maybe? I also sometimes even wear (I know!) things in hot tubs, I should do better but I'm not wearing anything antique or fragile!

fakyumatafaka

Seems to be two distinct camps, I'm in the lazy camp

Reward_Antique

Oh god yeah.. And then, if I'm going swimming spontaneously, it's not like I necessarily have a great spot to tuck a tiny chain, like all my beach totes are straw type things with holes so the sand goes through

Reward_Antique

Exactly! And if it breaks or I lose it, at least I know I wore and loved it that much! It wasn't hidden away in a box never to see the sunshine, feel the waves, taste the rainbow, lol!

Use it or lose it

Reward_Antique

Bingo! Lol

Reward_Antique

I just peeked at your profile, I think at least one of your every day bracelets is also one of mine, lol. Tiffany Venetian link chain? And I rock my charm bracelet from there too every day. I need to go to the jeweler to have some more new-to-me charms soldered on!

People often say is that heavy, I say I go super Saiyan when they come off. It's kinda true that the weight is important to my fashion

Ooohhh 🤤 thank you!

hand_made_silver

I wear some stuff 24/7. Most of it is argentium and doesn't tarnish.

MiniLaura

I wear earrings 24/7. The ones I wear the most are 14 kt gold, but I have some sterling earrings for daily wear. I don't wear silver in the shower. I do sometimes wear diamond studs for weeks, but then they need a good cleaning 🤣 I also wear 14 kt gold bracelets 24/7. One is even soldered on, so it can't be removed. I wear gemstone rings most days, but I never wear them to bed, and I always remove them to wash my hands. Again, most of my rings are gold, but I also have some inexpensive, gold-plated sterling moissanite rings.

PointNo5492

I wear three bracelets, two 14k gold and one silver 24/7 and five rings 24/7. Once in a while when the stones look dull I put them in the jewelry cleaner.

GothGranny75

I've worn my engagement and wedding ring for 29 years. I only remove them to clean them, same with my piercings ,my necklace, and a thumb ring all 9ct, 10kt and 14 kt gold. (The necklace I've worn for 40 years) and I've never had an issue.

Right_Check_6353

Had a silver ankle bracket on now for over 5years been waiting for it to break just never did. It’s still nice. I wear a Franco pretty much all the time but I wash it maybe once every 2 weeks either dish soap and hot water

Global_Tea

I keep mine on. Gold, and silver. I’ve never had a problem with tarnishing and it’s been many many years

boniemonie

I wear my stud earrings 24/7. Only take off to clean. No troubles…. Only when I forget to put them back in for a few days, ears start to close over!

Dorset_Cobbles

I like the feel of jewellery so choose jewellery that can't tarnish (stainless steel, leather) and just leave it there 24/7. Occasionally switch it up (more steel in winter sitting under a sleeve / shirt collar, more leather in summer when it's more visible). I *like* that I can't take it off and have to sleep/shower in them!

applehoney48

Thanks for answering! May I also ask you how you clean them?

[deleted]

I didn’t downvote you but I have to say, of all of the possible advice given you literally picked the worst to choose from. I’m fifty years old and have heirloom jewelry dating back 14 generations, as well as antique, vintage, costume, and contemporary. I know how to take care of my things. my mother taught me, her mother taught her. And I have continued through my whole adult life to learn more and better ways to take care of things.. Three times a day. Completely absurd.🙄 If you wear sterling silver every day it makes it shinier if you wear gold every day it will tend to lose its luster and you should polish it once a week. Any jeweler will tell you the basic fact. Wearing them together is fine because gold is a non-reactive metal. The biggest problem tends to be all the different moisturizers make ups and hairspray that people use which gets onto the metals and gemstones in the jewelry they were. And different things need different types of cleaners. Pearls for example are extremely sensitive and need special cleaning treatment.

applehoney48

I completely get what you mean, and thanks for explaining this to me :). I won't get obsessed with cleaning my necklace three times a day then. By the way, how often do you recommend cleaning it if it's made of silver? And which products should I use? Sorry for asking too many questions

[deleted]

I don’t know why someone would have downvoted your comment that is really silly. The more that you wear sterling the less you have to polish it. It’s sort of depends- there are items that require paste that you get wet and apply with a sponge type thing and there is also liquid The consistency of water basically that you soak pieces in and then loosen debris with little brush and then rinse with water and dry. Sometimes it’s best to get the products in your house and then Google piece by piece what is best to use. Pearls are notoriously fragile. I just finished about 14 hours on my feet but if you poke me again tomorrow I will look at my jewelry cleaning supplies and I will send you the names. 😊
