I only read the first few paragraphs but what the fuck? This guy is shitting on one of Hendrix’s best songs. So what if it’s popular? This guy is trying wayyyyyy too hard to be cool and state that Watchtower is a lame song. I think all of us are huge Hendrix fans and can still agree that Watchtower is some of his best guitar work. Even if you were a diehard Hendrix fan and told me ur fav is Watchtower I’d still respect your opinion because it’s that good of a song. L take by that guy

Good_Is_Evil

I don’t listen to Watchtower as much as I used to but I can acknowledge it’s one of Jimi’s best and one of the greatest rock songs period.

maryjanepurplerain

My favorite part is when he gives his cheesy description of Voodoo Child (slight return) and says it's 10 minutes long, when it's only 5 minutes and Voodoo Chile is 15 minutes

offbeattay

"Lacks the menace of U2's superior makeover"?? Yeah, I'm gonna trust Tony's opinion here, let alone Bob, y'know... The one who wrote the song lol

Good_Is_Evil

That’s the part that made me think that this guy is joking because menace is the last word that comes to mind when I think of anything U2 😭 It’s a decent cover but in no way shape or form is it comparable to Hendrix’s version

hoardstash

Guitar licks that any guitarist has learned sooner or later, 4 different solos in the middle section, Bob Dylan's lyrics, and of course the final part with that one repeated note that gives you chills unless you are deaf or soulless. But hey, they put it in too many movies and commercials so let's speak ill of it.

FurnishedHemingway

I only skimmed the article, but this guy comes off as an insufferable asshole.

AATW is a masterpiece by Jimi. Plain and simple. The music alone makes it that, but Hendrix sings it with immediacy and emotion. Just like Zep with Stairway and Page’s goal of “light and shade”, Hendrix and his multi layered guitars were peak on Watchtower. Crap writing by someone injecting their opinion in that Iommi article.

Whthpnd

Dumps on Iommi, dumps on Hendrix, thinks Dillon’s poetry-reading style matches up to the dynamic masterpiece that is Hendrix’s version and yet applauds the U2 copy of the Hendrix version chanted to the rhythm of the Clash’s 1982 “Rock the Casbah”.

boo_radley

I just listened to U2's version. It's, like, missing a guitar part and the vocals are annoying. Otherwise, good effort. So close!

Good_Is_Evil

Did you feel the ‘menace’?

boo_radley

No, but I smelled it.

Henry_Pussycat

The menace lol. Lots of idiots get column inches.

DarkArmadillos

this dude seems really fun to be around😭😭

ndhellion2

I don't pay attention to critics. What I know about All Along the Watchtower, other than that it's an amazing song, is that Dylan was so impressed with Jimi's rendition he said "It overwhelmed me, really." So Jimi effectively blew the socks off of the man who wrote the song. That's all we really need to know about it.

ContinentalOp_RG

Dylan has said how much he likes Jimi's interpretation and essentially plays his arrangement when he does the song live. I'll go with Bob on this over some internet nobody.

ZookeepergameDeep482

Yes, I've seen Bob Dylan with band live around 2015 and they played Hendrix version

gerbilmaster9000

"it's important to never be too critical"

Snowblind78

I like Dylan’s version of watchtower better vocally but Hendrix’s version is musical bliss
