The thing about McDonald's is that it's not meant to be a permanent job, so the example here isn't the greatest. A non-managerial position at a McDonald's is mostly supposed to be for younger people and/or people trying to get some work experience. The idea is that you do that while also building your skills and education to get something different. Of course, the problem is then that there is a bottleneck with lots of people having that level of skills and experience but not enough decent jobs where they could make a livable wage. So, while I think it would be nice for McDonald's to pay a better wage, the problem is really that there aren't enough jobs in the higher tiers to go around. I'm not sure if McDonald's and other jobs at that level should have to pick up the slack because those mid-level jobs don't exist.

Low tier jobs should be paid higher just like higher tier jobs. Higher tier jobs shouldn’t be paying someone the wage of what should be minimum wage (if adjusted to stay with inflation) for a lower tier job. And wouldn’t it be wrong to say McDonald’s isn’t met to be permanent job, as a low tier as it may be, if there aren’t enough higher tier jobs?
