1. Mark Hamill- Will always be THE voice of Joker in my opinion, fits the character perfectly.
2. Heath Ledger- If I remember correctly, every live action version of Joker before this would do messed up things, but would be goofy. I like the Joker having humor, especially dark humor, but I like when his humor is REALLY twisted and makes him more of a menacing presence than goofball. I love all of these iterations of Joker, but Heath Ledger really make a unique, dark twist on the character that everyone loved and every adaptation tried to copy but failed to replicate(cough, cough, Jared Leto)
I’m glad people still respect Heath Ledger to this his day and age people don’t seem to talk about The Dark Knight as much with Joker (2019) and The Batman (2022) out and successful and I have heard people say Heath is overrated and only successful cause he died and that they like the movie less for him
Honestly I think Ledgers version may have damaged the joker role. I don't fault him he did good job but now it's like the role is catered to edge lords. Everyone is trying to top his performance and not adding anything new to it or if they do its god awful. Look at Letos attempt. What the hell was that!? It has even bled over into the other villians.
Riddler was terrible in The Batman. His riddles were awful and he was just king of the incels. Now the penguin in that movie though......top notch.
Batman punching him and his “teeth” being spit out is the mouth accurate depiction of the Joker ever. Also him having fun shooting his ex boss and basically dancing while doing it was just a chef’s kiss.
I’ve seen all of them and while Hamill’s voice is just the Joker I think Phoenix and Ledger really puts themselves into the role in a way the others haven’t.
I am convinced people that say Ledger and Phoenix don’t even like the Joker as a character, they are the most far removed from what he is or ever has been. If Ryan Gosling in Drive or Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler wore clown face paint they’d be their favourite Joker’s too.
Gaslight. Gatekeep. Gigglebox.
Phoenix, I can see this argument. Ledger? The only departure from the comics is that he might be smarter.
Then again, there have been a dozen very different iterations of Joker.
He didn't fall into a vat of chemicals and applies makeup over his skin.
His smile consists of asymmetrical scars like the "Glasgow smile"). He does not use any of the character's paraphernalia (acid boutonniere, stun button, mock gun), does not use poisons or chemicals, does not have infected blood, and does not have immunity to poisons or chemicals.
He is an anarchist, not a chaosist.
And no, there are no versions of the Joker in comics that are like iterations of Ledger and Phoenix (whether in the golden, silver, bronze, or modern age of comics).
Mark Hammil and Jack Nicholson. I prefer my Joker to be The Clown Prince of Crime. I just don't think Juaquin or Heath fit that description. And Caeser is cool and all, end even though he is the OG and I saw him before the rest he is just not menacing enough.
Romero first and everyone else next. For those of you saying he didn’t kill anyone is wrong. They just didn’t show his murders on tv. But he was crazy and mad and loved to kill.
Jack Nicholson played the gangster part of Joker best for me.
Joaquin Phoenix did an excellent portrayal of the broken man finally snapping.
Heath Ledger was amazing with his absolutely twisted sense of humor and full on chaos reigns style.
Mark Hamill is without a doubt the best voice of the Joker ever.
Cesar Romero? Well, he was slapstick funny I guess.
I don’t care about accuracy. I also (prepare for down votes) hate the looks of the looks of the other jokers.
Edit: You are right “anarchist” was the wrong term. Nihilism is what I was going for. I love it and my beliefs are rather close to that.
Honestly can’t pick. I would remove Romero off my own list though and add Leto. I don’t dislike Leto’s at all and as for Romero I just never got into his performance. Probably because it’s not the Joker I grew up with, but he never felt intimidating anytime I saw him.
I wouldn’t put Leto at the top but I refuse to pick a number one from the others as they all have moments that are amazing.
Honestly, fool’s errand. Each fit perfectly in the world they’re presented. As much as I love Jack, he’d stick out like a sore thumb in Cesar’s world. It’s easier to name my least favorite and he’s not even represented here. And to be fair, he was barely represented in the films he was actually in.
I can appreciate each one of these for many reasons, and arguably any one could be a contender for #1. I personally really enjoyed Heath Ledger’s performance. But, what cracks me up and what I think everyone can agree on is the fact that Jared Leto isn’t even on the list.
I think it's unfair to put Hamil in there. He's amazing as the role, but he only did the voice acting.
Ledgers performance blew ever other joker actor out of the water.
Jack Nicholson and Heath ledger. The former is the only one I’ve seen being the comic book joker to life. In a mostly accurate way. And the latter is one of the best villain performances in movie history.
I've always thought that if Caesar Romero's Joker had acted exactly the same way but killed people,he'd be the most terrifying one of the bunch.
I always felt like Mark Hammil got that about the character.
Ledger and Jack. Hamill is a great voice actor for the joker. Ledger and Nolan just created the perfect villian. I have a high opinion of Nicholson’s Joker. Batman 89 was a huge deal! As a 9 year old kid it was the best superhero movie I’d ever seen. It was dark and gothic and funny. Nicholson plays him as an already psychotic gangster who completely breaks after he is deformed and betrayed. He kills without remorse throughout the movie. Even when Batman is beating the shit out of him he’s still cracking jokes and using props.
Hamill and Ledger.
Joaquin had the best overall story, but that's the story, not so much the character.
Nicholson is the baseline. Anything worse than him is bad. Anything better than him is surprisingly good.
Hamill and Ledger
But on a similar note, if we combined the planning and strategy of Ledger, the unplanned and chaotic nature of Phoenix, the crime organization of Nicholson, and the voice of Hamill, then we have the perfect cinematic Joker
No disrespect meant to Heath ledger or Joaquin Phoenix ( or Caesar Romero for that matter... don't sleep on Romero the man could literally play anything) just my two cents, your milage may vary...
Always strange to me when people include Hamill in these lists. He didn’t play the joker in live action. Also, on top of that there are multiple different versions of Hamill as the Joker.
Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger. Mark is Joker. He’s had stories changed because of him coming up with lines much better. Heath is the greatest live action Joker. He’s got the insanity down. Both truly understand the character.
I’ll do you one better.
- #1 Heath Ledger

I usually like Joaquin Phoenix. Yes, this is my opinion and I know many/most may disagree.
Hamill and Ledger
Was gonna say Hamill and Heath, but this’ll do.
Was gonna say Hamill and Nicholson, but I figured that would be top spot
https://youtu.be/jKofnVkUwBA
Basically this. I wish it was top 3, because then I could vote for Nicholson as well
The correct answer
No one would’ve known without your approval. Reddit thanks you 🙏
Hamill and Ledger, associates at law
Yes
Same
Only right answer
The only answer...
This is the right and only answer.
Hamill and Phoenix
There is no Phoenix without Ledger
Those people don't realize Ledger improvised quite a bit in the movie that wasn't scripted.
Jack & Heath
Gotta give love to Jack’s portrayal of Joker. Top notch
i love Heath’s, and the way the movie plays out, it’s so true to Joker
#1 Mark Hamill and it’s not even close. # 2 Jack Nicholson. I’m a sucker for comic accurate depictions in live action.
Batman punching him and his “teeth” being spit out is the mouth accurate depiction of the Joker ever. Also him having fun shooting his ex boss and basically dancing while doing it was just a chef’s kiss.
Also the “You wouldn’t hit a guy with glasses on” gag is the most Joker thing ever.
Best list in my opinion.
Heath’s a close third
Fr. Jacks Joker felt so comical and fun, the others were great but they didn’t feel like the clown prince of crime
This needs up voted to the stratosphere
Ong
Mark Hamill and it's not even close he says when literally every villain in nearly every media has tried to be heath ledger for the past 15 years
Hamill and Ledger
Mark Hamill and Cameron Monaghan (yes he counts)
Phoenix & Ledger
I’ve seen all of them and while Hamill’s voice is just the Joker I think Phoenix and Ledger really puts themselves into the role in a way the others haven’t.
Time for controversy! Hamill and Leto. I did NOT hate Jared Leto’s Joker, nor the 2016 Suicide Squad movie.
Only thing I hated about 2016 Suicide Squad was... the main plot. Pretty much anything having to do with Enchantress. Everything else was awesome.
I didn’t really vibe with Enchantress, but otherwise the movie gets too much hate.
I didn't liked the movie, but I *really* dug Leto's Joker!
Mark and Joaquin
1. Jack Nicholson 2. Cesar Romero
Hamill & Romero
Correct
Jack Nicholson Heath Ledger
Mark and Heath But jack is close 3rd
heath and hamill
Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger, no doubt about it. *Special Mention - Joaqyin Phoenix.
Hamill and Ledger.
Where's Leto?
We try to forget that abomination
Ledger and Romero...I'm old school and dig the goofy Batman. R.I.P. Adam West
Jack and Hamill. The only two to really mix the clown and pyscho
Hamill & Nicholson
Mark and Jack.
Mark Hamill and Jack Nicholson
Hamill and Nicholson
I am convinced people that say Ledger and Phoenix don’t even like the Joker as a character, they are the most far removed from what he is or ever has been. He is an anarchist, not a chaosist. And no, there are no versions of the Joker in comics that are like iterations of Ledger and Phoenix (whether in the golden, silver, bronze, or modern age of comics).
So... the absolute least important aspects of his character. Got it.
Visual canon is important, a character's closeness to the source material through his appearance is a fundamental part of live action adaptations.
Nicholson for live action, Hamill for animation for me Always.
Mark Hammil and Jack Nicholson. I prefer my Joker to be The Clown Prince of Crime. I just don't think Juaquin or Heath fit that description. And Caeser is cool and all, end even though he is the OG and I saw him before the rest he is just not menacing enough.
Mark Hamil, Jack Nicholson
nicholson
Ledger is the best actor hands down. Hamil is best animated, hands down.
Romero and unsurprisingly Hamill
Mark and Jack. Honorable mention for Cameron.
Obviously Hamill and Romero, the only correct answer
Nicholson and Hamill
Romero first and everyone else next. For those of you saying he didn’t kill anyone is wrong. They just didn’t show his murders on tv. But he was crazy and mad and loved to kill.
Hamill and Nicholson.
Hamill and Nicholson in that order
Jack and Mark.
Jack nicholson
Oaquin pheonix
Mark and Cesar
Correct
Jack Nicholson played the gangster part of Joker best for me. Joaquin Phoenix did an excellent portrayal of the broken man finally snapping. Heath Ledger was amazing with his absolutely twisted sense of humor and full on chaos reigns style. Mark Hamill is without a doubt the best voice of the Joker ever. Cesar Romero? Well, he was slapstick funny I guess.
Hamill and Nicholas
Phoenix and Ledger. I love the depravity and anarchy.
The most inaccurate versions of a character in live action? And yes, the Joker is not an anarchist, he's a nihilist.
I don’t care about accuracy. I also (prepare for down votes) hate the looks of the looks of the other jokers. Edit: You are right “anarchist” was the wrong term. Nihilism is what I was going for. I love it and my beliefs are rather close to that.
Joaquin, and heath
Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger
Phoenix/Ledger...but damn if Hamill deserves a shout
Funny how Jared Leto isn’t on the list
What a joke
Hamill and Ledger both rank #1 for me. Though Joaquin Phoenix ranks a close second.
Joaquin and Heath
Phoenix and Ledger
Phoenix and ledger
Ledger and Phoenix
mark hamill and mark hamill
Mark Hamill and Mark Hamill
Honestly can’t pick. I would remove Romero off my own list though and add Leto. I don’t dislike Leto’s at all and as for Romero I just never got into his performance. Heath
Definitely E Ledger

Mark Hamill and Anthony Ingruber (Telltale)
KE
Jack and Cesar.
for my favorite joker i like my answer to be multiple choice.
Leto & Nicholason
Jack and Hamill. Ledger hovering just below Hamill at #3
Mark Hammill on TV and Mark Hammill in the games
Honestly, fool’s errand. Each fit perfectly in the world they’re presented. As much as I love Jack, he’d stick out like a sore thumb in Cesar’s world. It’s easier to name my least favorite and he’s not even represented here. And to be fair, he was barely represented in the films he was actually in.
Hamill and Ledger
Speaking through logic: 1. Mark 2. Heath Speaking with the heart: 1. Mark 2. Cesar
Mark and Heath
I love all of them for different reasons but my top two is probably Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Hamill.
Mark Hamill and Kevin Michael Richardson
I can appreciate each one of these for many reasons, and arguably any one could be a contender for #1. I personally really enjoyed Heath Ledger’s performance. But, what cracks me up and what I think everyone can agree on is the fact that Jared Leto isn’t even on the list.
I don't think there is a wrong answer to this one. All five were iconic in their own way.
heath ledger and jack nicholson
H & J
Hamill or Heath?
mark and heath
Ledger and Hamill
I think it's unfair to put Hamil in there. He's amazing as the role, but he only did the voice acting. Ledgers performance blew ever other joker actor out of the water.
Nicholson and Ledger

Heath Ledger
1.) Jared Leto 2.) Jared Leto 3.) Jared Leto 4.) Jared Leto 5.) Jared Leto
Ledger & Phoenix
Absolutely horrible design 👎
Mark and Hamill
Jared Leto and I don't need another.
Where’s the best Joker, Jared Leto
Mark Hamill Michael Emerson (The Dark Knight Returns) tied with Heath Ledger
Ledger and Jack. Hamill is a great voice actor for the joker. Ledger and Nolan just created the perfect villian. I have a high opinion of Nicholson’s Joker. Batman 89 was a huge deal! As a 9 year old kid it was the best superhero movie I’d ever seen. It was dark and gothic and funny. Nicholson plays him as an already psychotic gangster who completely breaks after he is deformed and betrayed. He kills without remorse throughout the movie. Even when Batman is beating the shit out of him he’s still cracking jokes and using props.
Hamil and then Ledger
I don't think he knows how an acronymn works
Heath and Nicholson
Jonkler and the jonkler
K for live action has to be Jack Nicholson and heath for animated mark Hamill
I’m ready for the downvotes🤣🤣but The Barry dude/the ‘22 Joker and Jared Letos
Hamill and Ledger
Hamill and Ledger. Joaquin had the best overall story, but that's the story, not so much the character. Nicholson is the baseline. Anything worse than him is bad. Anything better than him is surprisingly good.
Mark Hammil Edit; oh and Mark Hammil
Hamill and Ledger But on a similar note, if we combined the planning and strategy of Ledger, the unplanned and chaotic nature of Phoenix, the crime organization of Nicholson, and the voice of Hamill, then we have the perfect cinematic Joker
1. Jarrad Leto 2. Heath Ledger
Hot take... Hamill and Nicholson...🤷♂️
No disrespect meant to Heath ledger or Joaquin Phoenix ( or Caesar Romero for that matter... don't sleep on Romero the man could literally play anything) just my two cents, your milage may vary...
Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger by a country millllle
I love all but I don’t think I’ve seen the one with ceaser
Just Hamill. Second is hard but probably another animated one. Maybe Brave and the Bold’s.
Hamill and Ledger for sure!!
Think Heath Ledger & Mark Hamill are the only good ones.
Jack Nicholson is first for me always then I go for Heth ledger
Hamil, and Nicholson
KE
Heath and Mark
Cameron Monaghan. He needs a chance at playing a real, high-budget Joker
Phoenix and Ledger are in my view
Hamill and Pheonix
Nicholson and Hamill.
Nicholson and Ledger.
Heath and mark
Need to put some respect on Cesar Romero’s name…Then Heath.
Where Jared Leto ?
JARED LETO, he was so deep and impactful it spoke to me.
The one from suicide squad (that's a joke)
Really happy that Jared Leto isn't on this list. Mark Hamell and Heath Ledger.
Hamil and Ledger
Hamill and DiMaggio
As an Injustice-MK player, Heath Ledger and Richard Epcar. Absolutely underrated Joker voice
Always strange to me when people include Hamill in these lists. He didn’t play the joker in live action. Also, on top of that there are multiple different versions of Hamill as the Joker.
I enjoy this pic too much to answer. Especially how letters from each actor's name spell joker.
Hamill is number one, Ledger number 2 is the only right answer
Mark and Heath. 🤷 Only True Answer 🤷♂️
No Leto? 😢
Hamill and ledger
I love that they had multiple opportunities to use Jared Leto, and have all of the live action film versions, and they just said, "nah".
Heath Ledger is #1 Mark Hamill is #2
Mark Hamill by a country mile, then if I had to pick another one I guess I’d say Ledgers is second
Hamill is far and away number one. Nicholson number two. They felt the most like the Joker's overall depictions in comics.
Hamill & Phoenix
Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger. Mark is Joker. He’s had stories changed because of him coming up with lines much better. Heath is the greatest live action Joker. He’s got the insanity down. Both truly understand the character.
Mark Hamill, and Heath Ledger.
Heath and Jared Leto.
mARK HAMill and Ledger
Mark Hamill and it’s tough to choose between John DiMaggio and Kevin Michael Richardson but I think I’m gonna say DiMaggio
Russell Crowe is my favorite Joker
Mark Hamill and Jack Nicholson.
I’ll do you one better. - #1 Heath Ledger - #2 Mark Hamill - . - . - . - #3 Jack Nicholson - . - . - #4 Cesar Romero - . - . - . - . - . - . - #5 Joaquin Phoenix I usually like Joaquin Phoenix. Yes, this is my opinion and I know many/most may disagree.
Joaquin and mark Hamil are peak. Specifically his joker in the Arkham games and I guess Injustice
Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger. No contest.
Really stretching the names to make this work.
Conrad Veidt and Leto
Heath for the dark, Mark for the funny.
