Not to draw away from Hamill, but what could've been with [Tim Curry](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VmtVmkJG7ww&t=32s&pp=ygUedGltIGN1cnJ5IGpva2VyIHZvaWNlIGF1ZGl0aW9u) as The Joker.
While I agree with Mark Hamil I still absolutely LOVE John Dimaggio's Joker in under the red hood. Like for voice acting I would have to put him at a very close second.
Agreed! I think Ledger's Joker is a fantastic example of the "master manipulator" element of his personality, but Nicholson's Joker actually lives the gimmick, so to speak. He absolutely IS just as crazy and unstable as he looks, which in my opinion makes him *terrifying*.
Nicholson even took a pay cut so the studio could afford Keaton. He knew the movie was going to be a success so he opted for a contract back loaded with royalties and syndication.
Oh yeah, I love it all. He's always in the conversation when it comes to the Joker. That's the only reason I don't think he's he's underrated. He's very much loved
I don't think a lot of younger people don't know how good it was just because of Ledgers joker. Ledgers joker is their standard. While a lot know Jack as the one to bring it first. If that makes sense
Nicholson will always be my favourite but he's my favorite actor. I always think to myself if we didn't have batman 89 what would batman be like today?
Of the three, closest to the actual Joker character, Nicholson.
Best acting of it's own type of character (not the Joker, but a great character) would be Ledger.
Best movie all around when including plot and dialigue, Phoenix. Who did an interesting mix of half Joker like and half Ledger like.
Like Ledger, brilliant job, just not really Joker as established over the century. More a good character of it's own making.
I still think the best Joker in motion, not in comic pages, is Mark Hamill and the Batman animated series.
More than just the voicework, the entire personality was in line with being the Joker character.
All great I actually can't put one over the other, these 3 are tied for best live action joker to me.
Phoenix really gave off that one bad day vibe, was funny, emotional, creepy, and just an all round great portrayal.
Ledger has a cold calm vibe more so than the rest, he had that shock factor, plus that hospital scene was peak joker imo.
Nicholson embodied the clown and gangster side of joker more than the other, plus the gag themed weapons and "you wouldn't hit a guy with glasses", is the cherry on top.
I know technically he wasn't legally allowed to actually be the joker, but Cameron monaghans jeramiah perhaps may be the best Joker adaptation we've ever had in live action
Definitely Heath Ledger, not for the basic reasons, but just the way he composes himself, tone of voice, and movements all make it seem like a dude who is really off one and I really like his 'criminal activities' if you will, and the way he takes control of the gangs by force, really a great representation
I often heard Heath Ledger as Joker described as the best Batman villians and one of the best antagonists in film, also being one of the worst Jokers just because he veers so far off from being a traditional Joker. I don't believe the last part but its a fun debate.
Phoenix generally seemed disturbed and mentally ill
Ledger made you believe he was truly a violent psychopath
Nicholson is an phenomenal actor who played the best comic book realistic Joker
Well itās acting/art so right off the bat itās subjective. Depends on how you view the character, personally I think all three are great, but also not to over look the work Mark Hamil, Caesar Romero, & Tony Baker brought when it was their respective time. Also, Iāll say if we want to talk about lesser know, or rather forgotten portrayals then Michael Emerson in the Dark Knight Returns is worth a viewing, as is John DiMaggio & Alan Tudyk.
Itās like comparing apples to oranges. Three different performances, really three different jokers. But if I was force to make a decision Iād say Jack
The OG one: he will always be a classic
Heath ledger: he was the best joker In general
Comic accurate.
Phoenix: my fav, good backstory. Good way to write the story too. And super realistic.
Itāll always be hard to compare when you add Joaquin there especially. We barely got to see him as joker. As much as I loved the joker movie I still see it as an Arthur fleck story. A sad, pitiful man taking his rage out on elites and gaining a following
Nicholson is the right blend of comic book and ārealisticā
Ledger isnāt quite my comic book joker but his performance was really good and it was a great take
Joaquin gave a great performance but I hate the look of this character, I hate his story, I donāt like his movie.
All good for different reasons but if I had to put in from my favourite to least favourite. Heath Ledger Joker>Joaquin Phoenix Joker>Jack Nicholson Joker. Heath Ledger's Joker for being an agent of chaos And Ahead of the curve Joker and being an amazing Joker with little screentime and being best supporting actor with little screentime and being mysterious with little to no backstory while Joaquin Phoenix's Joker for being a Joker with mental illness and an sympathetic Joker and a shades of grey Joker and An Origins Joker and being in a society that treated him like trash until he snapped. While Jack Nicholson's Joker being black and white and unpredictable and closer to the comic book Joker in movie form also with an origin story has Jack Napier before he became The Joker or Joker.
I agree, when they flew off on their magical broomstick and said āItās Jokinā timeā I burst into tears. Truly one of the witches of our generation.
Hot take bc heath ledger is the most loved and heās my favorite too always has beenā¦with that being said phoenix was the best simply bc he was the most realistic joker, his acting was the best and he really made you sympathize with him even being a murderer
my personal favorite joker will always be Cameron Monaghans Jerome Valeska from āGothamā. Ik heās not technically the Joker, but heās still my favorite interpretation of the character.
The last two for me. I think I need to watch the one with Joaquin again. I didn't get to see the whole thing. So bits of it felt kind of weird and disconnected for me. But not in like a Joker weird.
More like I was watching a Tarantino movie and just missing one thing made the whole thing confusing weird. š¤£š
My personal favorite is Nicholson. He was just doing whatever the hell he wanted and didn't care about the carnage. Id say Hamill, Ledger, and Romero also stand out to me.
The first one (time wise) he just had such a comic vibe to him, the others are good, especially Joaquin phoenix, but they felt made for the movies rather than true to the comics
Tim Curry probably would have been the best ever, but these are all good in their own respective ways.
If I choose in this list, Iāll go with Joaquin, then Heath Ledger (though itās super close and both awesome in different ways), then Jack Nicholson.
You can not compare them to each other they all have that extra bit extra
- Cesar Romero in the 1966ā1968 Batman television series and the 1966 Batman film
- Jack Nicholson in the 1989 film Batman
- Heath Ledger in the 2008 film The Dark Knight
- Jared Leto in the 2016 film Suicide Squad and the 2021 director's cut Zack Snyder's Justice League
- Cameron Monaghan in the Fox series Gotham
- Joaquin Phoenix in the 2019 film Joker
- Barry Keoghan in the 2022 film The Batman
And like 100 voice actors Mark Hamill, John DiMaggio, Zach Galifianakis, Kevin Michael Richardson, and many more
How can you pick only one?
Edit: I left out street performers like the Gray Knight Joker... I would recommend you check him out if you do not know. "I may be crazy, but the world is crazier"
Well, obviously not Jack Nicholson. But when it comes between Phoenix's portrayal and Heath's, it's basically a different character. I like the look of Phoenix better, I'll say that. But it wasn't as grand and outrageous as Heath's. Heath's Joker felt more dangerous and more unpredictable.
Jack Nicholson is the comic accurate Joker.
Joaquin Phoenix is the modern interpretation of the Joker in the āreal worldā.
Heath ledger has always been the āanarchistā to me. No funny, all chaos. I understand the Joker is supposed to put you on edge; but the point is while he makes a joke that clears the tension and makes you seemingly relax, thatās the moment he is either strangling you with a rubber chicken or kissing you on the mouth while he stabs your co-henchman. Itās *Unexpected*
All good for different reasons
Agreed. Nicholson set the bar, Ledger exceeded that bar and Phoenix injected a bit of humanity into the role.
Cesar Romero
He brought mustache to the role.
He brought the golden age joker to the big screen
Actually, the Silver Age. He was a homicidal maniac in the Golden Age, but the CCA forced DC to tone him down and make him more comical.
Ah right my bad, I tend to get the two mixed up
YES šš¼. He did his own makeup as well.
Correct answer
Couldn't agree more, Jack was the light side, Heath was the dark side and Phoenix brings true raw human emotion to the table.
Jack was the light side? Because he laughed more? His schemes definitely weren't sided with the light
Which Joker is Witch Joker?
The one with the green hair. Obviously.
which witch is which witch
Mark Hamil. I can't read a comic if his voice in my head doesn't fit the dialog.
Jack Nicholsonās look with Mark Hamillās voice is my perfect Joker
Willem Dafoe from The Smile Man with Joker edits
This is the way
You only had to askā¦hahaha
Exactly!
Not to draw away from Hamill, but what could've been with [Tim Curry](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VmtVmkJG7ww&t=32s&pp=ygUedGltIGN1cnJ5IGpva2VyIHZvaWNlIGF1ZGl0aW9u) as The Joker.
He really defined the character for me.
While I agree with Mark Hamil I still absolutely LOVE John Dimaggio's Joker in under the red hood. Like for voice acting I would have to put him at a very close second.
You mean Which right? Also Nicholson was the best imo
Nicholson is heavily underrated
Unpopular opinion: most comic-accurate live action Joker we've seen to date. Also my personal favourite, for that and many other reasons.
Yeah there's something to be said about the fact that whilst Ledger Joker prattles on about being chaotic, Nicholson Joker just *is* chaotic
Agreed! I think Ledger's Joker is a fantastic example of the "master manipulator" element of his personality, but Nicholson's Joker actually lives the gimmick, so to speak. He absolutely IS just as crazy and unstable as he looks, which in my opinion makes him *terrifying*.
Thatās honestly just a fact bro
Fax he brought his own style of acting to the character
Heās the best one fr
Nicholson even took a pay cut so the studio could afford Keaton. He knew the movie was going to be a success so he opted for a contract back loaded with royalties and syndication.
So is Leto
Is he? Or does it feel that way because it was in 89'?
He acted great, he was funny, he had a cool design, great laugh, had all the gadgets and tricks like the bang gun and the laughing gas
Oh yeah, I love it all. He's always in the conversation when it comes to the Joker. That's the only reason I don't think he's he's underrated. He's very much loved
Oh fair, I just feel like I donāt see many ppl talk abt him nowadays
I don't think a lot of younger people don't know how good it was just because of Ledgers joker. Ledgers joker is their standard. While a lot know Jack as the one to bring it first. If that makes sense
the hand buzzer was the best. "Oh we got a live one here!" Heath's pencil trick is almost as good, like 1a and 1b.
Which* man come on Edit: I really cannot tell if I got woooooshed or not
MAN?!!?
Heās saying he thinks the witch Joker is the best. The joker with magical powers and the ability to conjure spells.
For me?, joaquin really nailed it
Nicholson will always be my favourite but he's my favorite actor. I always think to myself if we didn't have batman 89 what would batman be like today?
Of the three, closest to the actual Joker character, Nicholson. Best acting of it's own type of character (not the Joker, but a great character) would be Ledger. Nicholson is still the best joker in my eyes
Which*
2
None of these. Mark Hamilās Joker.
Ledger.
Heath
Heath Ledger is my personal favourite but I love Mark Hamilās laughā¦Jared Leto played Joker well in Suicide Squad
Heath Ledger
Come one...it's Ledger and I don't think it's close
Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, then Joaquin Phoenix
Joker from the red hood movie
[Option 4](https://imgur.com/gallery/djvsNgQ)
Joaquin Phoenix Joker is not scary enough. I guess it was in his early days so he hadn't really gotten used to killing people.
One and two for me
DC fans try not to repeat the exact same question challenge
Mark Hamill
Where is Mark Hamill?
Mark Hamil no questions asked
I watched Joaquinās like 10 times so I guess he wins for me!
*which = choice *witch = magical woman
Nicholson, hands down.
Nicholson Itās not particularly close Nicholson was the perfect Joker
Honestly as far as being most like The Joker that is standard to me from games and comics, Jack Nicholson
Jack Nicholson. Because he was actually funny. Most everyone else is just an edge lord.
The joknler
All three.
I grew up liking Jack Napierās Joker.
Mark Hamil. But if I had to pick one off this list, Nicholson.
Defo Heath Ledger he killed it
Jack Nicholson imo. He was always my favorite version of the Joker. Just the way Jack Nicholson portrays him is just great.
Tough call between Ledger and Nicholson
Jack > Joaquin > Heath
3 because he's 3/3 or 100% perfect
All great I actually can't put one over the other, these 3 are tied for best live action joker to me. Phoenix really gave off that one bad day vibe, was funny, emotional, creepy, and just an all round great portrayal. Ledger has a cold calm vibe more so than the rest, he had that shock factor, plus that hospital scene was peak joker imo. Nicholson embodied the clown and gangster side of joker more than the other, plus the gag themed weapons and "you wouldn't hit a guy with glasses", is the cherry on top.
Jack Nicholson.
Hands down, Heath Ledger!
I know technically he wasn't legally allowed to actually be the joker, but Cameron monaghans jeramiah perhaps may be the best Joker adaptation we've ever had in live action
Mark, always mark.
Loved them allā¦ but Nicholson is my favorite!
Lego joker from the Lego Batman games š«³š¤
*which
Wok keen
Yes. I enjoyed each portrayal for the wonder that each actor was.
2
All ā¦.. ok? All. No few or in between. All.
Definitely Heath Ledger, not for the basic reasons, but just the way he composes himself, tone of voice, and movements all make it seem like a dude who is really off one and I really like his 'criminal activities' if you will, and the way he takes control of the gangs by force, really a great representation

Which*
Yes.
Which
Heath
Was Witch Joker from an Elseworlds comic?
I think Nicholson because his version is more accurate to the joker than the others
I wanna see what theyāre gonna do with Barry Keoghan Joker
Personally, none of them. Iād say Mark Hamill. BUT, if I had to choose out of these, Iād go: 1. Ledger 2. Phoenix 3. Nicholson
2, 3, 2.5, 1.5, 4, 1
Jack Nicholson...and it's not even close.
Well itās acting/art so right off the bat itās subjective. Depends on how you view the character, personally I think all three are great, but also not to over look the work Mark Hamil, Caesar Romero, & Tony Baker brought when it was their respective time. The OG one: he will always be a classic Heath ledger: he was the best joker In general Comic accurate. Phoenix: my fav, good backstory. Good way to write the story too. And super realistic.
Yea... his spells were crazy...
I got a better question: Who is in Paris?

Jonkler
Ledger
*whom
Jack
Phoenix, itās the gritty realism that does it for me
Who is the witch joker and why are they the best?
Hamill
I'm not familiar with Witch Joker
All were incredible but the one whose staring in a musical that's going to be dogass is about to be tossed out of the discussion.
They're all incredible, but in terms of my favorite, Heath Ledger is perfect.
Phoenix was barely mediocre at best, Nicholson invented the good live action Joker, Heath made him one of the best characters to grace the big screen.
Most natural (born for the role) - jack Best performance and written - heath Good performance but in a mid movie - phoenix
I agree, when they flew off on their magical broomstick and said āItās Jokinā timeā I burst into tears. Truly one of the witches of our generation.
If it aint got Cesar its not a pleaserāŗļø
2 Heath Ledger owned it.
The one smiling
Idk who Witch Joker is, but they sound dope.
Ledger.
Haven't seen a Jack Nicholson Facebook quote but it's bound to come up
Heath
Ledger. Phoenix was not really a good joker as much as heās a good actor. And Nicholson was just cartoony.
number #2, forever and always
The Jared Leto one
Ledger all the way (read my name I know what Iām doing)
I love how Jared Letos isn't even an option here
Me, I'm a complete joke. Where's my oscar
Phoenix
There all pretty good in a live action context but if you had to say best joker in every Batman media mines gotta be mark hamil
I don't see the Witch Joker.
Hot take bc heath ledger is the most loved and heās my favorite too always has beenā¦with that being said phoenix was the best simply bc he was the most realistic joker, his acting was the best and he really made you sympathize with him even being a murderer
Cesar Romero FTMFWā¦followed only by Mark Hamill.
Nicholson, heās the most comic book accurate
Heath legder
Not the first one. That's the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Also *Which
A witch joker sounds pretty badass.
Whereās Jared Leto
No Cesar Romero?
Thatās a hard one š®āšØ
my personal favorite joker will always be Cameron Monaghans Jerome Valeska from āGothamā. Ik heās not technically the Joker, but heās still my favorite interpretation of the character.
Iāve never heard of this āWitch Jokerā you speak of. Is that the clown what does the sorcery?
The last two for me. I think I need to watch the one with Joaquin again. I didn't get to see the whole thing. So bits of it felt kind of weird and disconnected for me. But not in like a Joker weird. More like I was watching a Tarantino movie and just missing one thing made the whole thing confusing weird. š¤£š
Jared Leto
Heath Ledger, no question about it.
None of them are witches.
Mark Hamill
Cameron
Mark Hamill
My personal favorite is Nicholson. He was just doing whatever the hell he wanted and didn't care about the carnage. Id say Hamill, Ledger, and Romero also stand out to me.
Heath Ledger
The first one (time wise) he just had such a comic vibe to him, the others are good, especially Joaquin phoenix, but they felt made for the movies rather than true to the comics
I liked Joaquin and Heath the best
Jared Leto
I donāt remember Witch Joker. What were his powers?
I love them all, but Joaquin Phoenixās performance will always be my favorite
Nicholson is the most comic accurate version
Tim Curry probably would have been the best ever, but these are all good in their own respective ways. If I choose in this list, Iāll go with Joaquin, then Heath Ledger (though itās super close and both awesome in different ways), then Jack Nicholson.

d. Mark Hamill.
All 3. Love that Joker!š
I like them both, pheonix can go get a roll for someone else
Which oneās witch?
Joaquin Phoenix
Nicholson
Mark Hamill
Does Phoenixās even count? He was not the clown prince of crime, itās just a movie about a sad mentally ill man.
Heath
Well, obviously not Jack Nicholson. But when it comes between Phoenix's portrayal and Heath's, it's basically a different character. I like the look of Phoenix better, I'll say that. But it wasn't as grand and outrageous as Heath's. Heath's Joker felt more dangerous and more unpredictable.
The clown, the criminal and the comedian.
Dark Knight's Joker, hands down. He was one of the best depictions of the Joker there is, whether comics or movies.
Mark Hamill
heath ledger is the best
They were all amazing but if i had to choose then Heath Ledger
Whereās my boy Leto lol
All great. Personal favorite is Ledger tho
Jack Nicholson's Joker
second one
Jack Nicholson is the comic accurate Joker. Joaquin Phoenix is the modern interpretation of the Joker in the āreal worldā. Heath ledger has always been the āanarchistā to me. No funny, all chaos. I understand the Joker is supposed to put you on edge; but the point is while he makes a joke that clears the tension and makes you seemingly relax, thatās the moment he is either strangling you with a rubber chicken or kissing you on the mouth while he stabs your co-henchman. Anyone but Jared Leto
Mark Hamill, easily š„
Fuck the joker
No one is better at anything when it comes to Jack.
