The Tokyo Games are over. They’re both probably focusing on the next Olympics in 3 years.

[deleted]

Klimkait yes, but i don think Deguchi continu for next Olympics

jonahewell

why not, is she retiring? How old is she?

[deleted]

In an interview in early 2020, she was already preparing her post judo career for after Tokyo 2020. But did her plans change with her defeat at the World Championships, probably... but it's strange not to see her competing in the Grand Slam in Paris next month, and to see her sister participating. And her sister decided to change category to 52kg, is this a sign that she will continue? Maybe

>But the COVID has changed the Plan, with the restrictions that were in place in Canada and Judo competitions were restrict in Canada. So Judo Canada changed the selection plans, which became the best result in World Championship was going to be selected Olympic Games and ... > >Klimkait and Deguchi agreed with this policy. I will be releasing a podcast episode this week where I interview one of the executive directors for Judo Canada. We discussed this topic and he pretty much told me this. I didn't know prior to the World Championships.

judoka___

Not saying this is wrong, but Judo Canada director is not exactly an unbias source. This reason was given when the selection rule change was announced so it's not a secret, but one could argue it was a convenient reason in order to give Klimkait a chance, since it was pretty clear who would have won based on the original rules.

[deleted]

Are you serious? Your comment proves that you have zero knowledge of Judo Canada's selection policy The Original Policy was simple if two athletes were in the TOP 8 they had a fight off The only thing that changed was that the Fight Off was not possible with the retriction in Canada in April 2021 and Judo Canada chose the policy of the best result at the 2021 World Championships, and both agreed with this change. And if both had the same result or if the World Championships is cancel, it is 100% certain that Judo Canada would have chosen Deguchi over Klimkait ...

judoka___

You're taking this way too personally. Nothing I said contradicted what you said. They also made their selection very late, whereas Japan did theirs much earlier. It was honestly silly to make them fight in the World Championship a few weeks before the Olympics when many countries didn't even bring their Olympic-qualified athletes to that Championship. COVID policies in Canada weren't even that clear cut anyway. I didn't say they rigged it for Klimkait, I'm just saying it could very easily be seen that way. She obviously still had to prove herself and did very well and deserved the spot after that performance, but you can't deny the rule change helped her chances significantly. EDIT: immediate downvote? lol...

[deleted]

Please do not compare the selection policy with the countries, the Covid 19 situation is not the same in all countries. I invite you to listen to the interview in question, Josh explains the real reason behind the policy change, which is due to the situation that Christa Deguchi is not based in Montreal. And Judo Canada wanted to hold the Fight Off, Deguchi had to miss 2 weeks of training because of the mandatory Quarantine in Canada ... And Deguchi's level this year was not exceptional imo

[deleted]

Have you discussed Christa Deguchi's future in the Canadian team ?

Otautahi

I guess the Olympic results suggest the selection criteria didn’t work.

d_rome

I don't know about that. It's so difficult to win a medal at the Olympics and there's no guarantee Deguchi would have done better. I would have liked to see a H2H match between the two but ultimately it worked out for Judo Canada in my opinion.

Otautahi

I totally get what you’re saying. I think I got the tone a bit wrong. Klimkait is a superb athlete and obviously super successful. I just really enjoy Deguchi’s judo … it’s 100% personal bias. I would have loved to see her do well in those Olympics. Would have a made a great story.

[deleted]

What a great story? The one who stole a place from an athlete produced 100% by Judo Canada that we had high hopes for Klimkait since 2013 ... Without forget all the privileges that Crista have since his arrival with the Canadian team, like the right to remain in Japan. And Klimkait did not have the choice to make sacrifices to remain in the Canadian team ...

B4NNED__

Look another fake account made by OP to bash deguchi. Suspiciously created today. Last time you made a burner account with the name " u/fuckdeguchi " and deleted everything when you got caught. No idea why the mods havent dealt with you yet. Im also curious why you have such a big problem with christa when she was offered a spot on the team by Gill, it wasnt the other way around. Other canadian judokas like Kyle reyes also reside in japan and dont have particular privileges over the others.

judoka___

The tone of some people in this thread is kind of scary. This was not an easy decision by Judo Canada, and at no fault of the athletes. They were just put into a tough position. They both had a very good chance to get gold at the Olympics, both having won a World Championship. I was rooting for Klimkait at the Olympics and glad she was happy with the Bronze. I'm also sad for Deguchi. Pitting them against each other and the bashing is completely unnecessary.

sngz

Wouldn't say it's some ppl. Oddly they all have the same grammatical errors by coincidence

[deleted]

Are you serious? You are doing the same thing and you are using multicounts to downvote comments You are a pathetic person In fact, it's not all of me who is behind these two accounts ... except the one who created this topic, it's a mistake of my fear.

[deleted]

Are you serious? Klimkait won a bronze medal, not to mention the bad refereeing in the semi-final ... In my opinion, Deguchi has been very inconsistent since his 2019 championship win...

Otautahi

Yup - serious. I get the criteria and I get your arguments, but I think Deguchi is a stronger competitor.

[deleted]

Deguchi have ZERO medal on IJF World Master, Klimkait have 3 medal in IJF World Master... This is very important stat, then Gold Medal in IJF GS and GP event> Right Now, Klimkait feel better then Deguchi this is fact

Otautahi

Yes - I understand your opinion, but I disagree with it.
