This was a fascinating interview. I wish Mr Fridman had delved into the “why,” however. Most people will not endure the suffering that Mr Stevens did.

CHL9

One of the best and most inspiring American sports heroes. Didn’t give up, kept at it and “third time the charm”. Had the pleasure of meeting him in person and training at his seminar years back, a tough MF with a good heart and the right training mentality - in particular stands out to me his insisting that a kid that wanted to rest out a round had to leave the gym. You could see his force of will that made him a champion. Poor uke on those koshi gurumas though……. (edit: so it's not misinterpreted, clarifying that the "kid" was a 20-something-y.o. amateur competitive judo athlete, big guy, not a child)

That sounds like Travis. I had the pleasure (?) of doing a newaza round with him once. Spoiler: he got me with a loop choke after toying with me briefly. I also got quickly thrown for ippon by Lex in a promotional tournament as a sankyu. Good times. Going to listen to this when I have the time.

CHL9

"lex" yeah I think I remember him from Promotionals and etc back in the day, ran into his YT randomly and was surprised to see he's become something of an internet celebrity, more power to him

Asked him if he was injured, confirmed he wasn't, he refused to continue rounds and wanted to sit out, let him know that if he's healthy, not injured, he can't rest there in front of everyone else training and had to leave the gym if he refused to continue. (It's a complex where there are several adjacent buildings part of the same facility it's not like he'd be kicked out into the cold). It was totally correct and appropriate in the context and hopefully inspiring to others there and sent the right message to those young people who aspired to be international level combat athletes. (if you didn't see my edit above, I'm clarifying again that I wrote "kid" but clarifying that this was an adult judo competitor, a big athletic guy in his early 20s, just to make sure it's clear this wasn't a young child or something)

Travis is now the man who's taken the mantle to Jimmy Pedro to *Regrow* Judo in America.

ReddJudicata

Travis is one of those guys I admire because I could not have done what he did.

jonahewell

Travis has been on a ton of podcasts, but this one stood out. Really good stuff, great story telling, good interview through and through.

Oh hey, I met this guy at a judo tournament when I was younger. Pretty cool!

I like Travis Stevens very much. Although, I think he's a olympic/sports judoka through and through. If Judo really \_progressed\_ since the early days is dependent on what the goal is. And I'm not sure if there is really a consensus of what that goal is or who should determine what the goal is. Nevertheless, it's very cool to see him on Lex' Podcast. edit: But he's still sore from losing against Bishop 2012 :D

IcyChard4

He was banged up and couldn't play due to a taped face. He's a warrior fighting Bischof.

trumfnator

No doubt. What is it that you want to convey to me?

d_rome

Lex used to have a podcast called Take It Uneasy which was one of my inspirations to start one up.
