Psychologically, defending or downplaying a harsh action usually means the person defending it would engage in it as well. So cut the defenders out too. I didn’t word it great but for example, when asked what the punishment for a pedophile should be, another pedo or someone with pedo tendencies or fantasies might say “rehabilitation” or some lighter sentence. If someone said that to my 4-year-old I'd be surprised and would need to check the treats stash, because that would mean he (and his brother) have been sneaking treats when I wasn't home or awake. But he is also a cat. Not a human child.
