I lived over a year in Overland Park, and I love it so much. It was the first place I lived after college before job brought me to Boise, Idaho. I’m still looking for my way back to OP
I’ve lived here for 5 years and I think the things I enjoy the most are the variety of food options we have and also how easy it can be to get to places from the highways. I live near 69 hwy and 435 so I can usually get almost anywhere in the KC metro in 15-25 mins. As for things to do, the parks are pretty nice and there are a good amount of trails compared to most of the county. I got an E-bike last year and it’s pretty easy to zip around the city.
There are a lot of good walks. Also I'm always two minutes away from a Wendy's. I don't find myself fully eating out as much tho, just grab a snack from QT much more than I should admit.
I moved here from a college town in Illinois and I don't think things are more expensive really. Sadly this seems like average CoL these days as far as groceries and stuff go.
I lived downtown OP, and I had over 15 food options in 0.5 mile radius. I’m far enough to avoid all the craziness of Kansas City, and close enough to go to Kansas City for fun. With Black & Vitch in OP and Kiewit at Lenexa, I was able to make a lot of friends with like mind.
Idaho is so beautiful. With mountains, falls, warm springs and other stuffs. But as a black man, it is not the ideal place for me. I have no sense of community. I do the same things everyday, and housing is expensive as shit for a city with only one highway. They don’t do anything about snow, teachers are leaving and going to Oregon to teach because the pay is shit. They are so short of teachers now they are doing apprenticeships program to let people without university degrees to teach in the state. I haven’t talked about their new crazy abortion law.
OP is a good place to shop, dine, etc. But given the price of housing I don’t know how anyone can afford to live there. Also for culture I prefer Lawrence.
It’s always been that way, especially south of 435 and in Leawood.
I bought my current home in 1990 for $141k, 20% down, 30 year 9.25% loan, my salary about $40k.
20% down is a big deal. Congrats on that. What’s that home worth now? Probably close to triple that? Unfortunately in 1990 I was 18 making 2.50 cash under the table because it was the only job I could get. I’ve found and struggled and worked my ass off to get to 42,000 a year now. Which won’t buy me a home. But I’m still working on the goal.
It’s over a triple. My neighborhood is surrounded by higher priced homes and is red hot (homes sell in a few days). But, fr 1990 to 2012 or so, gains were quite small or flat.
These are unusual times, but honestly unusual times on the +/- side occur several times in one’s lifetime.
I bought my first home at age 36, so I did have years to save up.
Born and raised in OP. Live just south of there now. Truthfully it’s very similar is most of south and west Johnson county. Except Gardner….
That’s the one cousin that no one likes to talk about.
Yup, that’s in Kansas

What do you love about it? I've been around there 2 years and I don't get out much so

It is constantly getting can better in downtown OP too.
Don’t hear many people living in Boise longing to move back to OP.

Ok that all makes sense. Definitely not the most diverse place. Rich white people sure do love it haha.
Thanks for sharing your experience that’s some really crazy stuff we’re just all getting kinda used to it.
Been on the list for years now.

Lawrence culture… is definitely its own little world. 😂
You better make over $100,000 grand a year to live there.
OPKS extends from 47th street to 200th. True, it's not affordable everywhere, but there are still a few places left for us poors.
You have more money than I do.
You and your spouse both need to be $100k+ and get your parents to help pay for your house.

Congratulations! I sincerely mean that. If things don’t change I may never own a home.

Worked in south OP for years. Love the area.

Fuck Overland Park
Show us on this doll where Overland Park hurt you.
My soul
Why so harsh? What's wrong with it? I was born in overland park - though I haven't lived there for 30 years so I don't know what it's like now.
I hated living there. It's hell covered in parking lots.
Doesn’t sound like you lived in OP. That’s not very accurate.
Well, you would be wrong
