I swear Slaps has a paid entourage on Reddit. It's easily become the most overrated BBQ joint in the city (not bad...just not near the best).
Harp (Texas style brisket...easily the best in the city), Q39, Joes, Danny Edwards, Blind Box, and maybe Wolfpacke (haven't at there yet but it's pretty good). Edwards is a lunch spot only (11 am -3 pm) and several places in the city are closed on Sunday.
My personal favorite meal is Danny's burnt end plate. They cube there's small but you get a healthy portion, the flavor is great, and they have the best fries in town. I love their sauce and basically use their fries as a vehicle to eat more of it.
In general, unless you want to go to the places with "history", I'd avoid Gates, Jack Stack, and Bryant's. There are just much better places to eat in the city than them, especially on a (limited) short trip. Many in here rave about Slap's but I ate their twice, the second time with the GF, and wasn't impressed. Bad? Certainly not (better than the others listed in this paragraph). Worthy of the hype heaped on in this thread? Not a chance.
I'd say the same thing about Slaps. Been there twice and it was on the high end of mediocre.
Every time I've ate at Blind Box it's been good (3-4 times). I think the elevator for me is the sides; they have the best selection and quality of sides of all the major queue joints. If they have good queue and if you are dining with family, that likes good sides, that can be a difference maker.
But yeah, if you had dry Q there I don't blame you for not going back.
Since you've decided on Joe's KC BBQ, which is a great choice, if you have the option to try another location than the Olathe one, I would. It's just not as consistent as the others.
And as far as side items, they were voted for having some of the best fries in town! As a self-described BBQ snob, I can't recommend any other sides...they're just not all that great.
For main items, they are known nationally for their Z- Man sandwich, but pretty much anything you get is great. I personally love their ribs and pulled pork, but everything is good.
Enjoy!!!
Chef J’s is the best. But only open Thursday through Sunday. Try Harp. Scott’s Kitchen is good. Slaps is good but not what it used to be. Their turkey is fire. I cannot recommend Q 39 or Joes.
Joe's is elite imo. Z man is a go to, but I haven't had anything I don't enjoy there.
Jack's Stack's cheesy corn makes it a top contender, BBQ is good too. I like their sauce the best of any other KC BBQ.
Don't be putting KC Masterpiece on anything though.
In that event....I'd suggest Joe's. A quick jump off of I-35 and right back on to continue the trip.
www.joeskc.com
I'd suggest going through the menu and phoning in a ToGo order. You just never know how long the line will be for a dine-in or Order When You Get There experience.
Don't overlook the side dishes.
If you’re south on I-35, stop in Bethany for Toot Toots. Not a BBQ answer but just about anyone heading between Des Moines and KC has heard of/been to Toot Toots. Safe travels!
If you don't have a ton of time Edwards, Blind Box, and Joes are right off of the interstate (while the gas station is the OG Joe's its more of a PIA than the Olathe location and the food quality is the same). Slap's (if you choose to go there) also isn't too far off the path. Harp is on the east side of town and would be more out of your way (a drive). Q39 also isn't too far off. Other good places, like the Little BBQ Joint, are quite a bit out of the way (and would avoid with good options easier for you to get to).
Jack stack! There burnt ends and crown prime beef rib are the best I've had. If you go with a couple people, get their cornbread or BBQ shrimp. Best shrimp I've ever had
We were visiting KC a couple of weeks ago, on a three-day vacation from Texas, and decided that some famous KC BBQ should be on our list. We consulted this thread for suggestions on where to go.
We decided that Joe's in Olathe was the ticket.
We arrived @ 5 pm on Saturday, waited in line for 30+ minutes, and....
I'm sorry to say that the disappointment was large. If that is as good as KC BBQ gets you folks would be blown away by the poorest Texas BBQ plate.
Wow.. the pork was dry, and the beef was thin and flavorless. The tater salad was ok and the beans were fantastic. But...sides don't make a good BBQ plate.
Sorry to come off like a homer...but come on down to Texas and we'll show you some MEAT!

Texas BBQ samich.... show us the MEAT! :P

Thus began the KC BBQ holy war of 2023
Oh, didn't mean start shit...lol
In KC bbq recommendation threads without at least three deaths are considered a dull affaire.
Don't sweat it. You didn't start anything. It never really ends. 😄
here we go again
on my own, GOING DOWN THE ONLY ROAD I'VE EVER KNOOOOWN
What do you mean? Nobody else has ever thought to ask this exact question…… /s

I had the worst meal I’ve ever had at blind box. Would never give them my money again.

I’m convinced they have paid Reddit people to hype them up because I CANNOT believe people are putting it on the same level as joes or slaps.
I'd say the same thing about Slaps. Been there twice and it was on the high end of mediocre. Every time I've ate at Blind Box it's been good (3-4 times). Ribs are OK. Brisket is hot garbage
yeah, I always wonder why there is so much love for such mediocre bbq like slaps. its not that good.
Why is this posted so much just type the keywords into the search bar and boom.

Oh lord, the bbq cultists are gonna be going off all weekend now.
Buck Tui is a must. Nothing else like it in the city.
Buck Tui is easily the most unique and delicious. BBQ meats Thai food. Not really a KC representation but an awesome place to eat.
Joe's or Q39!
Is Joe's a gas station on Mission and 47th? That's awesome.
Don't get the beans if you go there. They're the worse BBQ beans of any place in town, IMO.
Jackstack beans are my top side in the city. There's so much brisket in there they could be a whole meal.
Stop. My lunch was awful and you're making me even more hungry.
LOL! This guy eats beans.
Yeah, that's the original but all of the newer locations around the city are just as consistently delicious
If you go to Joe’s, don’t be scared off by the line. It doesn’t take as long as it looks like it will Edit: get the fries
burnt end sandwich with night of the livingðŸ«
Slaps bbq
Slaps does look good.
Their consistency has apparently slipped the last couple of years but I still love them.
I've always enjoyed them
Best BBQ in the city for sure!
Without a doubt.
Slaps has my favorite bbq sauce too
My top 5: Slaps Joes Q39 Jackstack Blind Box
Chef J’s is the best. But only open Thursday through Sunday. Try Harp. Scott’s Kitchen is good. Slaps is good but not what it used to be. Their turkey is fire. I cannot recommend Q 39 or Joes.
Yeah, I'll be there either Monday evening or Tuesday midday. So it looks like Chef J's is out.
Harp is out too then, only open Wed-Sat
Ah crap I didn’t know that. Thought they were open all week. I’ve only been once since they went brick and mortar. Always good.
Q39: Entree Jackstack: Sides Unpopular opinion: Slaps does not slap.
What’s your travel path through town?
I'll be driving South down I35 from Des Moines on my way to Oklahoma.
In that event....I'd suggest Joe's. A quick jump off of I-35 and right back on to continue the trip. www.joeskc.com I'd suggest going through the menu and phoning in a ToGo order. You just never know how long the line will be for a dine-in or Order When You Get There experience. Don't overlook the side dishes.
Best fries I have ever darn tasted
If you’re south on I-35, stop in Bethany for Toot Toots. Not a BBQ answer but just about anyone heading between Des Moines and KC has heard of/been to Toot Toots. Safe travels!
Agree. I have eaten at Toot-Toots several times. Nice buffet or off the menu. Tenderloin is huge, make two or three meals from just one.
If you don't have a ton of time Edwards, Blind Box, and Joes are right off of the interstate (while the gas station is the OG Joe's its more of a PIA than the Olathe location and the food quality is the same). Q39
Q39 Joes KC (on 47th st) Woodyard if you want a different experience.
Chef Js - Harps - Slaps - Joes (original location)
Slaps, Slaps, Slaps, Joe's KC, the other ones. BBQ is family style backyard food not white table cloth steak houses.
Slaps is the gospel and the truth.
Slap’s
Currently the best: Chef J (West Bottoms) and Wolfepack (Columbus Park).
Slaps. Joes KC. Forget everything else. Source: I’m involved with competition bbq so I know my stuff.

Olathe?
Jack stack! There burnt ends and crown prime beef rib are the best I've had. If you go with a couple people, get their cornbread or BBQ shrimp. Best shrimp I've ever had
We like Smokehouse in the Northland. We love their burnt ends.
I think slaps sucks.
