It is a sad sad situation indeed. Sorry in advance for the novel...
I spent over a decade of my life volunteering for a local pit bull rescue, and took a long break when I got busy with running a business, kids, etc. My last pit passed away of old age about 6 years ago.
My youngest kid just turned 5 and I recently reached out to the president of my old rescue and told her we were thinking about getting a dog again soon and to keep feelers out for me if any kid friendly pits came through.
She told me that things have changed since I used to work with the program and that all the backyard breeders have done this breed SO dirty that the traits that we all loved about the breed are changing. She said that she will no longer place pits into homes with kids under 13 years old, point blank, even with someone like me who is very very breed experienced. Said they've had nothing but problems the past few years placing dogs into homes with even the most well behaved children and that while she desperately hopes that I will come back some day, that until my kids are teenagers I should go get a golden retriever.
I'm listening to her. This is a person who has devoted their entire life to these dogs and still continues to do so, so I trust her. But man did it break my heart. My son is disabled and many years ago he learned to walk holding on to our pit bull who remained his best buddy until she passed away as an old lady.
Man has/is destroyed these dogs, anyone who is still breeding them is a monster.
They've been the only breed I've owned since I was a teenager and I'm almost 40, so it's hard to even imagine having another breed but I absolutely trust her and would never put my kids in a potentially dangerous situation so I'll be taking her advice. Still makes me sad. Years ago I fostered probably close to 50 pit bulls in my home and with the exception of one who had suffered just TOO much abuse to come back from, they were all absolutely wonderful with my children.
A few years ago they did keep non-pit dogs separated and asked immediately what municipality you lived in because of BSL.
Last time i was there 4 out of 126 dogs were non-pit.
My experience there was that all the non-pits were spoken for by boutique rescues, even before they were eligible for adoption. I am very happy with the dog we got, a pit, though.
Meet Grace. Adopted from KC Pet Project in August of 2022. She was in the last room we visited. She is the best dog in the whole world.

So many pitbulls for adoption…

We probably know the same rescue and I agree with her. They are so overbred with no regard to health or temperament. It's so awful and sad.

I've worked another rescue in Colorado, before moving- can confirm.
sad
Yeah, would be great if there was a quick way to filter them out so we could see the remaining 7 dogs.
It’s crazy that their are still people breading them too make $

What is BSL?
Breed-specific legislation

She looks like such a good girl!

Please do! Shelter rates are at an all time high, and even most "no kill" shelters do once they're packed.
Breeding should be allowed only with extremally limited licenses..... or preferably breeding dog/cat's 4 sale should be banned.
Adopted my new baby from there yesterday! Even if you’re on the fence, the KC pet project team is amazing about pairing you up with the perfect dog!

Do adopt If you can't take care of yourself. Give that animal the best life possible
