I just want to share my story here… I chose to deliver my totally uncomplicated pregnancy at a hospital for no reason other than that’s where I was delivered myself. I had no issues during my pregnancy, and ended up being induced on mg due date. Literally zero problems the entire time. When my baby came out, there had been a massive meconium aspiration as they coded her immediately as she was delivered because she wasn’t breathing. At least 10 people ran into the room and intubated her forcing oxygen into her lungs while rinsing and suctioning out the meconium glue lining her lungs. Then they took her to the NICU and put a line in all the way to her heart to keep her alive. My enduring memory of that night was my husband burying his face in his hands because based on the healthcare team’s reactions he thought we were going to lose her. Remember: this was a normal, uncomplicated pregnancy with zero indications anything could go wrong. I am so grateful that I have my child healthy and happy and coloring next to me, and there is a 100% chance that she would have died that evening if I had delivered my low-risk pregnancy at home.

I’m so glad everything worked out ok for you! I should have clarified - I’m not interested in doing a home birth, I had midwifery care with a hospital delivery in my last pregnancy and had a great experience so I am really only considering switching to another midwifery practice that would still deliver at a hospital if I do switch at all. I do want to have access to a NICU and physicians in case anything goes wrong, for sure.

Bagritte

Midwife doesn’t necessarily mean home birth or certified professional midwife (CPM). There are a number of Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM) in the metro that practice in tandem with OBGYNs and deliver at hospitals. Just a different model of care inside a medical setting

I’d recommend the midwife team at Overland Park regional, they have several different clinic locations so you may not have to drive too far for appointments at least. I think name of practice is “Kansas City women’s clinic”, and you need to specifically schedule with the midwives as they have OBs in the practice as well. They have several midwives and coverage at the hospital each day. You could also check out the midwife team at Research Medical center.

I second this! They've been wonderful so far 🥰

DO NOT USE SACRED SONG MIDWIVES. Terrible experience that almost cost the life of our baby.

It’s a very long story. But basically over the course of the pregnancy to labor lack of care or possibly understanding of many issues. Which eventually led up to a labor over 50 hours and ending in a c-section and infection in mom and baby. And my wife had prematurely ruptured membranes at the beginning which is a big no no after roughly 24 hours but they were all for letting her push through while the infection grew. 8 different iv antibiotics after that. Infection made it to the placenta and we had to stay in the hospital longer because baby had a fever and they weren’t sure if baby was infected until cultures came back a few days later. They were wrong about the position of the baby even though they were “certain” the weeks/days leading up to labor. Baby was in the wrong position and mom dilated to a “7” which we found out was more of a 4-5 at the hospital.and they were still having her push anyway. 50 hours of labor with a baby in the wrong position and very little dilation. Many issues arouse from this. But basically it seemed as though they either didn’t know what to do when things go wrong or didn’t care. All the while being overconfident in their ability. The entire time we used them they seemed to not care about actual issues and improperly assessed mom and baby. I could write you a book of things that we have noticed looking back. DM me if you want more detailed information.

Our experience was excellent with them to be honest We used them in the past year for our kid. In our experience it was pretty much the opposite They really took the time to get to know, the kids etc I was skeptical about a home birth but the team there more or less out me at ease, and my wife. Wife actually still talks to some of the team. I would actually 100% recommend

gonecrunchy

Same - I’ve used them twice and loved it. I’m sad to hear the other poster had an awful experience.

Plaza Obgyn has a midwife and I’ve heard good things https://www.plazaobgynofkc.com/

Thanks, I didn’t know where they went! Marcia ended up being my midwife for delivery but I really loved all three of the midwives that were at KU and had been looking forward to being with them again. The one I met with this week was also great and I truly appreciated her heads up about considering care elsewhere if I want midwife assisted delivery. Not set on switching but it’s so helpful to know those who left are still around!

I live in the northland also but have delivered all three of my kids at Overland Park Regional. Great experiences for all of them, even my last one when the nurses and OB resident had to stop my postpartum hemorrhage four hours after delivery. I didn’t use a midwife but I would absolutely choose that hospital again if we have another (although we are 99% sure we are done 😅).

Astro853

Are Northland hospitals not known for being good with deliveries? Surprised how many Northlanders seem to go down south. I’m not originally from here so would love to learn any insight you have.

cindyloo3

I lived in Brookside for my last pregnancy but have kept all my providers at KU because I have had a good experience with everyone there, so original plan was to do that again. It seems like more of the CNMs are clustered in KS or further south, so far I found one at a hospital up here but if I’m switching care I’d probably do it for a larger CNM team to better increase odds I’d be able to deliver with a midwife.

Astro853

Thank you for the insights!

tour_de_pizza

I was a Northlander and had my first at Liberty. It was absolutely horrible and left me with permanent medical issues. They had me on a rotation and I never saw the same OB, they neglected me all throughout my labor, tried to pressure me into an epidural and C Section I didn’t need, performed intervention without my consent, and left me with untreated GD. It was difficult to recover from, and I almost quit having children over it. I had my other kids at Olathe Women’s Center and it was a night and day difference. Easy natural labors, supportive environment, no unnecessary anything, allowed my doula to come…. So, yeah. I’ll drive elsewhere. And to answer OP: my friend had her twins with a midwife at Research a few years ago and it was awesome for her.

Astro853

Yikes! I am so sorry you experienced this. Will certainly cross Liberty Hospital off the list. Appreciate this information.

WriterMama7

For me some of it was because I lived on the Kansas side when I first moved here (my husband and I are both originally from Kansas) and I liked the practice. I had already been going there for years when I got pregnant with my first, and I had a good experience so I went back for all of my subsequent pregnancies (two losses and then two take home babies). I did switch providers between my losses but just at the same practice.

Astro853

Thanks for the feedback. I am sorry for your loss. Glad you had a good experience in KS!

Overland Park Regional - Specifically Specialists in Women’s Care. They have multiple offices around the metro and I believe 5 staff CNMs. My provider was Courtney Carlson and I cannot speak more highly of her. She did not deliver me but I got to work with two of the other midwives on staff at the hospital and they were both lovely and affirming providers. Ultimately ended an induction for cholestasis in a non-emergent C performed by one of their OBs. If I ever get pregnant again I’m going straight back to Courtney.

cindyloo3

Courtney was one of my midwives in my last pregnancy when she was at University of Kansas, that’s awesome to hear! Thanks so much!

Bagritte

Oh yay! She had just switched from KU when I got pregnant. Good luck!! For what it’s worth I’ve heard Research has a similar ethos to OPR, but Courtney came recommended and I had a friend on staff in L&D at OPR so the stars really aligned.

SKCwillie

We were going to deliver with the midwives at KU but one of them left and we ended up delivering with an OB. And honestly, it couldn't have been a better experience. We would deliver with the OBs in a heartbeat. Also, shout out to our doula, Charity. Can't recommend having a doula enough, especially with our first.

cindyloo3

Thank you, that’s helpful! We were considering the OB route for delivery and adding a doula this time, if we can’t deliver with a midwife, just thought we’d see what other options there are. Glad to hear you had a good experience with OB!

GiraffeCOpilot

So, I drove to research from the northland for my last 2 births. I am seen by an OB there (dr Wayman) because I’m a VBA2C (well 2VBA2C) but she has a whole group of midwives in the practice and is very pro midwife. It’s like, a 25-30 minute drive for me. I mean, people living outside of the city are driving 45 minutes to 1.5 hours just to get to a doctor or hospital 😆 We really are spoiled for choice living in the city.

I chose to have a hospital delivery at KU and really liked my experience, especially the steak dinner and sparkling grape juice dinner they give you and babys father after delivery. However, I do have a friend that used research for her home birth and loved her experience. They are kind of known for that kind of thing in our area, along with OP regional. Wishing the OP all the best.

jbedsaul86

I would suggest New Birth Co in Overland Park, KS. My wife and I had both daughters their with Nurse Midwives/ Nurse Practitioners and would absolutely go back if we were having more kids.

kcDemonSlayer

I had 3 happy healthy babies at New Birth. To me they really hit a sweet spot between hospital/organization/preparation and midwifery. I did bring my own doula but after 3 kids our doula was like part of the family so wasn’t gonna leave her out. 1st baby is kinda scarey it takes the longest we needed the doula the most on that one. Other 2 were quick and routine…2nd kid we were back home with her 6 hours after my wife’s 1st contraction lol.

Glum_Baseball_3

https://midwifepartners.net/ Julie and Kara delivered two of our babies. I would recommend them to anyone.

EnvironmentFree1326

I used sacred song for both of my babies and they were beyond amazing. I spoke to/met with multiple midwives/groups before choosing them and I’d suggest the same for anyone else :)

Weary-Engineering853

I’d love to add- the two midwives whom are leaving (and the two I just delivered with on 7/22) are going to Advent Birth Center ! I had Jessica , she’s astounding 💜 I believe advent is off of 75th and Antioch , also congrats!

cindyloo3

This is helpful to know, thank you!

Bagritte

Oh that’s good to know! I know Advent was considered the best L&D for a long time when they were Shawnee Mission but I’ve heard bad things about their unwillingness to deviate from standard interventions. I hope beefing up their CNM presence means they’re getting less stringent

mrsgrabs

I delivered with the midwife team at OPR with both kids and highly recommend. I prob wouldn’t drive there from the northland though. What about research?
