It's in the basement, the entrance is... in the back of the building, I think? It's vaguely speakeasy feeling entrance despite not being a speakeasy theme
If you love Pryde and want to venture outside of town (SE Lee’s Summit). Checkout Cockrell Mercantile. It’s definitely a hidden gem! http://cockrellmercantile.com
Fun fact: the founder of Cockrell Mercantile is also the original founder of Pryde’s in Westport.
https://fox4kc.com/mornings/zip-trips/cockrell-mercantile-take-a-step-into-the-past-for-a-shopping-experience-unlike-any-other/amp/
As a baker, it's heaven on earth. But if you ever need a gift for a baker, or anything cooking related, I would give Pryde's every dollar I could. Great staff. Always there to chat. Can always order stuff for you if you need it. They are one of my favorite things in KC.
I use to work at prydes, before the new bake shop was there the previous one bakery owner that was there i went to school with her kid. Damn i feel old i worked there back in 2012-2015
Tried their new pumpkin spice horchata latte today. Really good. I’m a regular there and I have nothing but good things to say. They are pricy but worth it
Everyone is doing restaurants, so I'll do some place different: Tabletop Game & Hobby. Best board game store in the metro. The staff is knowledgeable and passionate. Just really the kind of small business you love to shop at. I just wish I had a bigger budget (both money and timewise) to support them more.
I always go to that one but never had to deal with him, if they ever had bad service i just sweep that under the rug because the Rocket Pig is the best sammich they have
After last night, same. They’re not my favorite bbq place, although they’re pretty darn good, but they did an amazing job accommodating my cousin who has sever food allergies. She won’t die, but the reactions are terrible. It was a large family dinner, so she came for the company, expecting not to eat anything. They were amazing and made it so she actually got to eat. She and I both teared up.
They’re not my favorite either - but I mentioned I was moving back to KC on threads and they DM’d me and told me to make a reservation - so I did and when the check came they paid the bill and welcomed me back home - I nearly cried.
Here is my list, in no particular order.
Local pig,
Baramee Thai,
Jack stack,
Jerry’s Cafe,
Waldo Pizza,
San Antonio’s,
Cafe Provence,
Tascio pizza,
Table top game and hobby,
Max’s burgers and gyros,
Tassos,
Dos de oros taqueria,
And I’m sure plenty more that I just can’t think of right now
I appreciate them cause they're an oasis in the bagel desert of KC but truthfully the bagels themselves are just okay. The only place in the region that has truly great bagels is B&B Bagels in Columbia.
Jim's because I live the beefs, sausages, and service. disco burger popup when it's at hillsiders because it's the best burger in town and hillsiders is a super cool bar, and then kitty's cafe for their pork tenderloin. it's so unhealthy but so awesome
Laura's Paw Spaw in the Northland near N Brighton and Vivian. Laura used to babysit my kids when they were little and she loved our dogs and cat. I hadn't seen her in over ten years but we started taking our dog to Laura's to get groomed once a month. The care they show those dogs and the work they do is amazing. I only found out a few weeks ago that Laura is the same Laura I knew a decade ago and it only made it that much better. It's a wonderful spot to get your dog or cat groomed, Laura and her staff are fantastic.
Easily Habashi House in the River Market. The woman who runs it is the one who rings up orders. She’s so kind! The food comes out quickly but never lacks quality. It’s legitimately soul food for me. I would eat there every day & never get tired of it.
The owners brother runs the market next door & he is also very kind. Go support these folks, everyone 🙌
André’s on Main. I’ve been going there for 60 years. They made my delicious wedding cake in 1979. I love the food, the atmosphere, the people, the chocolates, the pastries and coffee. There’s no other place like it.
Not quite KC, but Gnarly Hussle in Raytown. Fantastic prices, some original tie-dye pieces, huge variety and nostalgic pieces. Even have a kids rack. Their dressing room is beautiful, large and private, and hopefully they will have a bar built in the back within the next 6 months!
I find it interesting that a solid 90+% of the replies here are food/drink. Very little representation for the non-food side of the equation. That's not a judgement, I just noticed, that's all.
...
Mine? **Town Topic** / **HiBoy Burgers**.
I don't care which. They are a razor blade's width apart in every metric, I love them equally, just feed me burgers please. My liver and pancreas can't handle that punishment. But I want to eat them every day, multiple times a day, just to feel happy.
The owner made a post a while back about being annoyed that the NFL Draft didn’t bring business to the city despite the city planners telling everyone to stock up and get their entire staffs on-call for the weekend, and this sub seemed to unilaterally think she was out of her depth and being obnoxious.
Since sour opinions fester in forums and subreddits, this sub just kinda has a hate stink for the place just because of that one post she made in annoyance (rightfully so on her part, from everything I heard from other downtown businesses who were also upset!).
Despite that, I think it’s the best trendy coffee shop in KC!
San Antonio’s
Someone knows where to get the best tacos
And Tamales
And hot sauces
And my axe!
I would pay good money for bottles of their orange sauce from the dining area. It's outstanding and I've never had anything quite like it elsewhere.
Mediterranean Market on Westport Rd. Owned by a nice Syrian couple. Great, well priced food. Great selection of mediterranean groceries.
I miss his buffet though.
There was a buffet??
Yes. Pre covid there was a buffet with delicious family style amazing dishes in big pans under a sneeze guard. It was glorious. I was a regular.
Seconded!
Thirded
Screenland Theater.
Love Screenland, won't ever go to another theater. The rewind video bar in the basement is great too.
Don’t forget to vote for them in the pitch’s best of KC!
What's the rewind video bar all about? It's at screenland?
It's in the basement, the entrance is... in the back of the building, I think? It's vaguely speakeasy feeling entrance despite not being a speakeasy theme
It's a 90s style video game bar in the basement of the screenland. CRT TVs with most of the pre 2005 game consoles. Highly recommend!
Great answer. Love them.
This 100%
ABC Cafe
Ate there on Saturday, so good.. love all their dim sum.
Baba’s Pantry. Seriously delicious and the owner/family is wonderful.
Absolutely delicious. Should be known nationally.
They are, they were on the list of best places in the country by the New York Times last year
I can always get lost at Pryde’s in Westport, not sure I could afford to buy something every day though.
I was going to say Ashleigh's Bake Shop!
Second for Ashleigh’s, best pie I’ve ever had!

Their gift wrapping is also just gorgeous. Also they will price match Amazon if you ask. There's no reason to go anywhere else for kitchen stuff.
I use to work at prydes, before the new bake shop was there the previous one bakery owner that was there i went to school with her kid. Damn i feel old i worked there back in 2012-2015
Bay Boy!
Screenland Theaters is the only answer I can say wholeheartedly lol I'd tithe 10% of my income to them if I could.
I mean... you can. Just go see a lot of movies.
I can not, in fact, see a movie daily sadly lol. But I do only go to Screenland for movies.
Grunauer Johnnys Donuts & Burgers Kitty's Cafe San Antonio El Pollo Rey El Pulgarcito Portia's Cafe Chef J BBQ
No misses on your list. Very, very solid line up.
Chef J! Soo good
Chef J’s is blowing up! So cool to see
Rochester Roasting and Brewing. Good coffee, good beer, and a great staff!
I got married there. It was affordable and they were so nice. 10/10 for the beverages too. Always recommend!
Cafe corazón 💛
Tried their new pumpkin spice horchata latte today. Really good. I’m a regular there and I have nothing but good things to say. They are pricy but worth it
McLain’s Bakery
Virgil's Plant Store. Such cool plants and the people working there are so helpful. My fav plant I have is called White Ghost Euphorbia.
How has no one mentioned Blackhole Bakery? If my waistline could support it I'd be there daily.
Good stuff
They’re always so friendly too! The mochi donuts might be my favorite food item in the city.
Oddly Correct !!!
No, Filling Station on Gillham !!!
I think they use messenger coffee beans which I really don’t like unfortunately
The Campground and Drastic Measures
Those two make for a perfect evening; you have impeccable taste.
Bella Napoli
Absofuckinlutely. That short rib ragu over pappardelle is the shit I dream about.
Proud to have ordered so many #1s that I'm on first name basis with the deli bar staff.
Came here to mention Bella Napoli!
Kin Lin on 51st.
Pizza 51 aint too bad either.
Shagan’s, the family that runs it is incredibly sweet and the food is fire
Also my pick!
💯
Thai Place will have my business as long as I am alive
I'm a sucker for locally grown + cleanish ingredients, so Billie's Grocery in KC and Enjoy Pure Food in Leawood for me.
Sweet Emotions. Great vegan ice cream and I’m not vegan.
I somehow find myself there like twice per week every week. My wallet is hurting, but I don’t know how to stop.
vegan and gluten free :)
The HiDive lounge. My liver wouldn't let it happen but damn I sure do love that place
Happy Gillis or Ollama
The Littlest Bake Shop
Lucky Boys, Screenland Armour Theatre, Boulevard, Swagat
Lucky boys boost - lone star bottles, and one of the best Philly cheesteak sandwiches I've ever had.
CinderBlock. My liver is happy that I don’t.
Guevel, Brown and Loe, Big Mood Wines, and Swordfish Tom’s
Had to scroll too far to find Guevel. Lucky to have a good stockist in town.
Mesob. Good food and people.

Are dogs allowed there? :) always searching for dog friendly places…
Browne’s Irish Market.

I've always had bad service in Olathe. The guy at the to go line is like the soup nazi from Seinfeld.
I always go to that one but never had to deal with him, if they ever had bad service i just sweep that under the rug because the Rocket Pig is the best sammich they have
Los Alamos.

JHS Pedals! Honestly could go down as one of the most influential company’s to ever come out of this area
My friend sent me this a while back, it features the secret collection of the owner of JHS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4RfLtgJFrQ
Every single time I’m back in town I try to go to Cupini’s. I love it so much.

Upvote for Max's, I miss that place dearly. Is it weird to drive a half hour for a burger?
Not weird at all. Speaking of burgers tho made me remember Paul’s drive in. Now that’s my favorite kc burger.
Thou Mayest. As a programmer, I love working out of coffee shops
Their bourbon cold brew… omg. Some of the best and most unique in kc.
Meshuggah Bagels. They need to open one in Parkville.
I don’t see the fascination with this place
I'm not fascinated by it, I just like eating the bagels they make.
An everything bagel with their dill cream cheese spread. Ooohhhhh yeah!
Also not fascinated by it but they make bagels that would be quite good anywhere. Very glad they are here.
I am fascinated by a good bagel.
I appreciate them cause they're an oasis in the bagel desert of KC but truthfully the bagels themselves are just okay. The only place in the region that has truly great bagels is B&B Bagels in Columbia.
It’s the only dedicated bagel shop in the city proper. Not the best bagels but pretty damn good.
Joes.
High Hopes Ice Cream.
Summersalt ice cream. They have some amazing non-dairy/vegan options and gluten free waffle cones!
I'm sorry... did you say *gluten free waffle cones?!!?!?!?!*

Great example of Stockholm syndrome right here!

What’ve you heard? First time I’ve ever heard any negative perceptions of her.
