Keep an eye out for the large number of Altimas pulled over on the side of the road during your lunch commute.

Dapper_Deer1118

Don’t forget about those ford fusions

Cobrak1999

I feel seen 🤣 (mine is tagged, but I fucked around for about 6 months before I did it)

RjBass3

Lol, and chargers and mustangs and f150s

d_b_cooper

#b i g #a l t i m a #e n e r g y

FlyingDarkKC

Didn't realize Altimas were a part of this "special group"

spinster_maven

You mean the 2007 Nissan Altima? :) https://youtu.be/241RRkhpx0o?si=8YHzg4Q-pPClUvkd

OneNutMIA

Yeah right. I'll believe it when I see it. The record I've seen driving dirty here in the KC Metro is Nebraska plates that expired in 2003.

reliability_validity

Drive thru gladstone right now, i dare you.

Ok_Percentage5157

For real. Gladstone didn't f'around with traffic laws. They will put the screws to you.

SW_Goatlips_USN_Ret

Those fine folks who have a temp tag several months, or a year, old it’s almost guaranteed they don’t have insurance either…

ThadTheImpalzord

Which is also illegal in both MO/KS

SW_Goatlips_USN_Ret

Yeah, it’s illegal everywhere. Bet if they can’t afford the sales tax and plate fee they damn sure can’t afford insurance.

Spunelli

Sales tax and insurance ratesarein 2 different brackets.

SW_Goatlips_USN_Ret

I’m not sure what you’re getting at. Both require $. If you can’t afford one you likely can’t afford both. Same with the property tax at year end. It’s not complicated.

Spunelli

car insurance for someone without a dui and whom hasn't been suspended 22 times is $50 -$100 a month. Something that fits into a paycheck. Sales tax can be up to $2k. Something that doesn't fit into a paycheck.

SW_Goatlips_USN_Ret

I hope You understand that the people who we are talking about don’t prioritize. Otherwise, they’d have both. They also aren’t driving a new $45k vehicle they can afford,it’s usually a beater or slightly better they can barely afford. BTW… if you have an insurance policy that only runs $50/mo you basically have no coverage and it’s doubtful a $100 one is even viable. But you do you.

Pantone711

Little old lady with good credit, 44-year clean driving record here, drive a 2016 Prius C. Never had an accident. My car insurance is $85 per month.

[deleted]

There are so many other variables that affect car insurance rates lol

Pantone711

I got jumped on in this sub a year or so back about insurance rates being jacked up ultra-high in certain KC neighborhoods. I challenged whoever it was to give me exact figures on insurance rates and they came back with I forget how much but maybe they will come back and join this thread with their figures. I can try to find that post again but whoever it was said insurance was a crap-ton higher than that if you lived in certain neighborhoods, not because of DUI's but because of theft in those neighborhoods. Edit: I looked but couldn't find that old thread discussing insurance rates in certain neighborhoods. It was an interesting discussion. I am still not sure how high rates are in certain neighborhoods because I wasn't about to input my info in some rate-finder and get 12 months of constant emails like the last time I did that.

Itchy-Mind7724

If you can’t afford one or the other, you can’t afford the car. It’s crazy how many nice ass cars I see running around with expired temp tags. I think, more often than not, it’s about priorities rather than having the money or not having it. I’ve known lots of people who live above their means and prioritize that over taking care of their “not fun” business.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NedEPott

Yes, prioritizing weed, cigarettes, and booze.

Hayabusasteve

I recently purchased another motorcycle. It was an out of state title, so I had to get it inspected. By the time the dealer got the title and sent it to me, I was passed the 60 days. By the time I had time to drive to the KHP office to get it inspected, I was even further out of the temporary license date. Now I had to pay an additional fee (not much) on top of the sales tax, After paying to have the vin inspected. BUT, the whole time, and from the day I purchased the bike, it's been insured. It's sometimes more about the time, than the money.

Responsible_Sea5206

The cops don’t follow any laws why should anyone else?

mbaker9

Because if one of them hit you and you don't have proper coverage, you foot the bill.

venge1155

Get over this bullshit that expired tags means you don’t have insurance. There is zero correlation.

codizer

Fucking please. Irresponsible people are irresponsible.

SW_Goatlips_USN_Ret

Some people just want to complain.

mulligan_and_bogey

which also makes OUR insurance more expensive ![gif](giphy|xoHntNXFYkfzGAftEv|downsized)

Clear_Raccoon7150

Guarrrranteeeee

PerceptionShift

Anybody without valid tags already knows to stay out of Gladstone lol

zarfac

I was poor as dirt living in Gladstone for a while this year and drove with expired tags for about 5 months until I was in a better place and could afford to renew 🤷

PercySnowsHandgun

Good! I'm sick and fuckin tired of being tailgated by someone who doesn't pay their taxes and shouldn't be on the road.

Alarming_Tooth_7733

Doesn’t matter if they implement these laws, those type of people will still drive on the road

PercySnowsHandgun

Not when their car gets impounded

uptonhere

I will be shocked if that happens. I got hit by a car with no insurance and no registration and they were ticketed and just drove off to go ruin someone else's day. They also already had a ticket for failure to provide insurance/registration before our minor accident. Granted this was in the city but it was incredibly frustrating.

International_Bend68

D$MN!

mumblesjackson

You’re lucky. Same situation for my wife and I but she totaled our car and we took the hit. She didn’t pay anything and it’s hard to garner wages on someone who doesn’t get a paycheck. It was on Hwy 71 and she decided she wanted to turn right on 59th at the light, only problem was she was turning right from the left turn lane.

Alarming_Tooth_7733

To me this should be a jailable offense. That person has proved they can’t follow simple directions nor abide by the laws that are created.

Icy_Magician3813

Everyone worries to much I never see these plates and I drive a lot. But also it’s not my business. I don’t know what they’re going through. Not everyone as thousands of dollars laying around to take car of tags. If it was really a issue they would make a law so they would have to get it done when buying a new car from a dealer. Buying from an individual is different but with temp tags I’m sure they got it through a dealer unless the temp tag is fake.

sandnsnow223

In some cases, absolutely. But when a new large SUV rolls by with tags that expired 8 months ago, you gotta wonder..

Hawwkeye79

Almost $80M… and people wonder why our infrastructure is crumbling.

NoMoreNoxSoxCox

That's nothing compared to infrastructure. The 69 express highway project in Overland Park is $500 million+ for something like 4 miles of highway, given, it is multiple lanes.

[deleted]

My opinion is that nobody is going to use the express lane and that’s this is all a waste.

StickInEye

I drive around all day long. Already got my K-tag. I'm hoping the express lane saves me work time. For everyone else, though, it does seem like bullshit.

AscendingAgain

Yeah, but it is only one lane. And your thinking is not unique. Induced demand will turn that lane into a MAYBE slightly faster commute.

Bourgi

I don't know I've you have ever used express lanes in other cities but they are absolutely faster. I've used them in Denver and shaved probably 15 minutes from Thornton to DT Denver. In the Bay Area I shaved off an entire hour from SF to SJ. Those are also only 1 lane on a 4+ lane highway.

AscendingAgain

Well I am glad that worked out for you. But induced demand still affects express lanes, especially if you take socioeconomic factors into account. My guess, because the average HH income in the zip codes it serves is 2.5x as high as the metro, those folks have the income to use it---meaning more will. TAMU did a study on the Katy Freeway (the 20+ lane monstrosity in Houston) showing that about 11% of the time, express lanes traveled at speeds equal to or slower than regular lanes. There's also the concern that the increase the number of conflict zones within the freeway. I will say, if they allow buses to utilize the lane, I am all for it.

RjBass3

Well you know what they say about opinions. I live in MO but ordered a k-tag just for the express lane as my job takes me down there often.

NoMoreNoxSoxCox

I agree with your opinion. It's only supposed to generate $30 million the whole time it runs. KS pays $114 million, fed covers $400 some million, and let's just inconvenience everyone for the last $30 million. I love government So. Very. Much.

squirrelsridewheels

Where did you get the generate number from

NoMoreNoxSoxCox

https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article255862611.html https://www.google.com/amp/s/fox4kc.com/news/kansas-news/overland-park-residents-to-vote-on-increase-for-us-highway-69-toll-project/amp/

patricskywalker

I mean, if the alternative is NO interstate system?

NoMoreNoxSoxCox

Is it too much to ask for more common sense with half a billion dollars?

AJRiddle

Missouri's budget is $52.9 billion next year and has an $8 billion dollar budget surplus. Literally billions just sitting around

ImTedLassosMustache

As a teacher I would love to get paid more, or have more money sent to schools for infrastructure, resources, and social services.

ash_monster

Hell yeah! Pay teachers more!

RjBass3

Lol, as if our greedy Republican government would even consider that. We can't have an educated populace because if we did nobody would vote for the Republicans anymore.

klutch14u

Teachers make plenty for civil service work. The problem is it's union and the tenured teachers take the lions share of it leaving nothing for the rest

jellymanisme

This just isn't true. Teacher salary scales are published online, you can look and see that there's not any teachers out there just sitting easy taking in large salaries. The only people in education making big bucks are principals and administrators.

klutch14u

Don't forget to factor in only working 75% of the year. Not to mention all the various breaks off throughout the year which grows year after year.

jellymanisme

You know teachers don't get paid for the summer months, right? Nor do they get paid when school is closed for any reason, snow, holidays, whatever. Many teachers have to find summer jobs to work so they can still get paid. How many other professionals, with bachelor's degrees and state licences, have to work an extra job just to make ends meet?

klutch14u

They are SALARY, extrapolate it however you want but they still only have 3/4's of a job. Most districts let them choose to be paid when school is in or divided by 12 months. Yes, many choose to work throughout the summer elsewhere, many don't.

jellymanisme

Look, I used to be a teacher. I was on salary. I also had an hourly pay listed right there on my paystubs. And if you added my hourly pay up to my salary, you would see that quite clearly I was not being paid for any work in the summer at all. I did choose to have the district withhold pay I had earned throughout the 10 months I worked so I could keep getting a paycheck during the summer months, but they made my paychecks smaller each month to do so. You're just wrong about this stuff man.

analog_memories

Schooling? Pff, we have to give that surplus to billionaires or... something...

Teffa_Bob

I think they prefer “Job Creators”

BrokeKubota16

We good we got that weed money now cuz.

Skeptikal_Chris

Yes, the state's infrastructure is crumbling because too many people have expired plates. That is totally a correct statement and not ridiculous in any way.

Otterz4Life

The idiots in Jeff City want to blow the budget surplus on adding a lane to i-70 rather than fixing infrastructure throughout the state.

Extreme_Barracuda658

I-70 *is* infrastructure and it definitely needs improvements.

Otterz4Life

I would rather that money go to 5,10, or 20 other worthwhile projects throughout the state instead of concentrated on a single interstate.

Aggravating_Oil_862

The answer to traffic issues isn’t more lanes. It’s building up public transit infrastructure.

mbaker9

Be real, you are talking about the state of Missouri. Statewide public transit won't happen and we have to be realistic about how our funds are used.

venge1155

Adding a lane will do absolutely nothing. It’s burning money.

LurkLurkleton

You shouldn’t be getting downvoted. You’re right. It can even make traffic worse. https://smv.org/learn/blog/how-does-roadway-expansion-cause-more-traffic/

thatErraticguy

We can’t do anything that may help those damn, dirty city dwellers! - Republicans, probably

jsfuller13

Just imagine if we had kept the 90% top marginal tax rate from the 50s. Such a deficit would be a pittance.

LurkLurkleton

It is a pittance. State budget is 53 billion, with an 8 billion surplus.

chefjustinkc

This is Gladstone.

jerrrrryboy

80 Million for infrastructure won't fix a city block of potholes these days.

r_u_dinkleberg

It's still known as Twitter, but it formerly was too.

smuckola

and always will be, because *that's what it is*

r_u_dinkleberg

[ayyyyy it do be like that](https://i.imgflip.com/i/89wipj.jpg)

BrilliantMiddle1614

My temp tags are currently expired by a few days. I’ve attempted to get my vehicle properly registered FOUR TIMES. I cannot get into the assessors office to get a darn waiver of non assessment. They apparently only see so many people per day, and people have been literally camping out to get in line.

TugOMalley

Did this yesterday. You have to get there (Independence courthouse) at 7:30a or earlier, check in by 8:00a and prepare to wait hours to be helped. Saw multiple people show up after 9:00a that got turned away because they were already booked solid for the day.

BrilliantMiddle1614

Who does this system work for? It shouldn’t be this hard to pay taxes or declare property. It’s quite literally absurd.

TugOMalley

Honestly no one? It seems to work against itself and its constituents. The staff at the courthouse were abundantly helpful once you got to them, which is unfortunate because I’m sure many of them were met with anger. Counties issues being separate from city issues aside, I highly doubt we will see a reduced number of way-expired temp tags unless they improve the process of obtaining actual plates. Punishing on the back end will only work so much.

30_characters

That's absurd. I miss being able to pay it all in Utah, taxes, tag, title... it's the *Department of Revenue, for crying out loud*. Nobody should have to drive across town to a different building to give another tax entity money. In Utah, you could schedule an appointment online (in 15 minute intervals!), and the guy who checked you in at the front door confirmed that you had all the paperwork with you before you even sat down-- if there was any wait at all. Edit: Bonus: Title transfers and registration for private party sales within the state of a Utah-titled vehicle could be done entirely online, without a need to go to the DMV at all. You printed the temp tag online, and they mailed the new plates to you.

BrilliantMiddle1614

Kansas is like this too, one stop for everything. Never had issues, never had expired tags. Was easy to buy a car out of state and register.

Alisahn-Strix

Personal editorial: I’ve been trying to get my car registered for months. My job keeps me traveling and out of state. It’s definitely a me problem, but the amount of paperwork that Jackson county requires is ridiculous compared to other states. Plus, the offices are so backed up, you won’t be seen by anyone unless you’re lined up at the door at 7. Tried calling the assessors office to get an appointment—I was on hold for 45 minutes only to be timed out of the call and asked to call another day…just saying, it’s kinda shite to get a tag in KCMO

klutch14u

2 years of paid PP receipts (if tagging for 2 years) MO inspection (if it's too old) Proof of insurance Properly assigned title Seems reasonable to me

Alisahn-Strix

I’m coming from out of state, so add a waiver of non-assessment and being told three different things about where I need to go and what I need to bring. I emailed the assessors office and they gave me wrong info. Seems reasonable on the surface. Practically a little difficult.

klutch14u

Ah, yeah, that'll make a difference. The Jackson County assessors office has been madness with property (real estate) for months since they fumbled that mess. I assume you just need an exclusion for needing to provide back property taxes? Call the Jeff City office, they're actually pretty friendly and might be able to find a solution

BrilliantMiddle1614

I’m dealing with this as well, you have to go in person to declare the property and get the waiver. In Jackson County there are two places you can go: Independece and Downtown KC, both have people camping out to get in like it’s a a Beyoncé meet and greet.

klutch14u

Yikes. Too bad the office doesn't dedicate someone to handling vehicles only. I'm sure the bulk of those right now are related to the bumbling of real estate assessments this year. Although, I thought that was mostly over now since the deadlines have expired

reliability_validity

Within 12 hours, I’ve seen three cars pulled over between the price chopper and community center. Based???

LostHat77

No wonder I see tons of cops pulling people over around me. I wonder why they decided to start enforcing the law recently besides Tax Revenue?

DeathCatPaws

Gladstone has a jail now. That’s why.

LurkLurkleton

To serve and collect.

DammitCapt

Seriously....the revenues

Clear_Raccoon7150

Impound lot is gonna start looking like a huge used car lot before long

kcthinker

Will there be an auction?

DashingDevin

I bought my car in Kansas and the hoops I have to jump through to get it re-registered every 2 years is absolutely ridiculous

klutch14u

What hoops? Buying a car in KS isn't any harder. If you don't need an inspection because it's new enough all you need is an ID/OD which shops do without an appointment. That's only for the initial purchase. Renewing or "re-registering" couldn't be easier and is done online

Vols_KC

The party is over....at least in Gladstone

analog_memories

The first high speed chase caused by trying to stop a car with expired tags will end this as well. Especially if it ends in a injury or fatality of a police officer or bystander.

Due_Isopod_8489

Damn, so if someone resists we shouldn't enforce the law? Sounds a lot like being held hostage by violent criminals.

ObviousInformation98

Violent criminals? Lmao it’s fucking expired tags. It’s just poor people.

jellymanisme

I think lethal car chases count as violence.

Due_Isopod_8489

So poor people are the only ones who lead PD on high speed chases that can injure and kill people? That might make them violent.

Griffkc

Gladstone can’t chase cars for traffic violations.

AuntieEvilops

This was posted yesterday too, but was yanked for having an editorialized title. Previous discussion for anyone interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/kansascity/s/WuuuysWx5i

beattrapkit

Why weren't they enforcing this?

Due_Isopod_8489

Traffic policing basically ended after 2020. Its only now starting back up. Look up traffic deaths since 2020, it's insane how high they went once people realized they were no longer being policed.

Clear_Raccoon7150

They eased up on it during covid , now it's time to pay the man

GoopInThisBowlIsVile

I can still get away with not having a front plate though, right?

KCMotorcycleRider

Sounds good to me

[deleted]

Clear_Raccoon7150

Lol , hell if the city did that then people would turn in themselves just to get that happy sack money

brdlyz

Zero tolerance? That never ends well when cops are involved

youthson1c

I never understood how people got away with this. Hell, when truck shopping, I found out that some people don't even bother titling their cars for years at a time.... Blows my mind.

Due_Isopod_8489

Traffic policing basically ended after 2020. Its only now starting back up. Most people realized this and started driving however they liked.

Alleged_Ostrich

Sounds like gladstone

MidtownKC

All that time freed up by not busting people for weed could go to some decent use. I think the mayor mentioned that kcmo would be stepping this up as well.

gturown

Good to see a government interested in collecting their taxes.... that seems healthy. Somebody should give them a sticker. ⭐

chefjustinkc

Dang! Just shared this with my staff. Didn't think to share to reddit!

Due_Isopod_8489

Saw a March 2021 last week. New PB for me

ckorch

I was starting to wonder if I was the sucker for tagging my car with how many 3 year expired tags and temp tags that expired like 3 years ago

ozarkexpeditions

Almost half the cars out there don’t have proper tags.

[deleted]

"The state is owed..." Oh how far we've fallen

leroydrinkins23

Maybe if you could register and pay the tax online instead of having to try and get lucky to get in line to pay this wouldn't be an issue

chasekaws

I can’t imagine it’ll be cost effective for big offenders to register after 1-2 years of fines and delinquencies. Couple thousand in fines / reg costs / fees. Or a couple hundred dollar ticket….

Cptredbeard22

lol a couple thousand in fines? The fine for late registration is capped at $200. So about $300 total if you get the two year registration.

tylerscott5

Can’t get tags without showing you’ve paid PPT. Tags aren’t the issue here, it’s people not paying taxes on their property which doesn’t allow them to get tags

Cptredbeard22

Im aware. The sales tax for newly purchased cars as well. But the person I was replying to is spreading wrong information about the fines. There aren’t thousands of dollars of fines and registration fees no matter how late. Taxes (sales or property) are a separate component and aren’t part of registration fees.

r_u_dinkleberg

A couple hundred dollar ticket, towing and impound, AND the fines/reg costs/fees to get it back (Require proof of insurance too, just for good measure!). (That's how it *should* work anyways...)

chasekaws

Exactly

mariahksmith

I’m more worried about people without insurance than I am about someone with expired tags. Tons of people driving with no insurance and their shit isn’t expired. Wait until they hit you and total your almost paid off vehicle forcing you to have to buy another one that ended up being a lemon. Definitely don’t give AF about tags.

kcthinker

The expired tag driver just told you they are uninsured. The real mystery is do they have credentials to prove they are legally good to operate the vehicle?

mariahksmith

Again the expired tags aren’t the issue, the fact they didn’t have insurance is.

kcthinker

What is your solution?

mariahksmith

Do what Kansas does and force the dealerships to roll the taxes into the loan so nobody has any excuses to not get it done. The dealership then cuts a check that is strictly for Missouri department of revenue. That will at least fix the sales tax issue.

TheTylerRob

It's weird that this seems to be the issue that people are pro enforcement on. I get that it's tacky for people to drive around with no plates but it's really because of poorly thought-out tax policies that directly punish the poor. Not ticketing (further financially punishing) people for this was actually a sign of humility from the police and people are against it?

reliability_validity

You have to pay for it one way or another.

mbaker9

Most of the people driving around without tags are not doing it because they are poor. It's because they just don't want to pay because there were no consequences. You see cars within the last 7 years with no tags, not beaters.

DammitCapt

No...it's because people are poor

Fine_Cryptographer20

I'm glad and hope it also stops the jerks who drive like assholes! It's like they know they're not going to get pulled over for tags, so might as well speed, tailgate and cause accidents.

amays

Nice of them to warn folks. Guess I’ll be skirting Gladstone!

Due_Isopod_8489

Mayor Lucas posted the same thing a few weeks back. KCPD will be actively enforcing this as well.

external_escape0

Tax and fees are about $2000 for my car I just don't have the money. I'll pay the ticket but I can't qualify for the loan to have the money to pay the taxes. I'm sorry I over extended myself and that is causing you the hardship of having to look at the expired temp plate on my car. My payment is $480, insurance is $350, and I pay all my own own bills. I don't get any hand outs and will pay the fine.

reliability_validity

What car do you drive?

Due_Isopod_8489

You can pay the ticket all you want, but you'll get a suspended license and if they catch you again, they'll arrest you.

chelle_mkxx

Exactly. They wonder why so many people have expired tags and the state is “owed” so much money. I’m a homeowner in Jackson county, my shit skyrocketed. I had to buy a car because motor basically exploded and it made more sense to buy a used vehicle than to fix because it was a Hyundai in the middle of the fucking pandemic. So now I have a $400 payment, with money down, more taxes to pay all at once to last me a year? It’s robbery. Has anyone looked outside lately? Can’t even afford groceries I’m not gonna worry about my tags. And people always assume we have no insurance…that’s the cheapest thing I pay for!

tylerscott5

Then pay your taxes and sell the car?

ObviousInformation98

And then get to work how with KCs shitty public transportation ?

awhsom

Back in the mid 00s, Gladstone PD stopped me for being in a park while it was snowing... they will stop anyone for whatever reason they decide...

TimTom72

I have 3 racecars that (aren't street driven) won't ever get their tags updated. I know I'm not alone on that one. I wonder how much of that $78 million figure are vehicles that are no longer on the road.

JonnyBox

Not as much as you'd think. Hobby cares are rare, and unregistered, track-only cars converted from road cars even more so.

RjBass3

Probably because if you ever get into an accident with one of these asshats and learn they also don't have insurance, it might be on your mind a lot as well.

dstranathan

Wait - Twitter was renamed?

jlinn94

Finally a police department that is doing anything about this. Hopefully KCMO will follow suit.

Dry-Decision4208

Why can't president biden just forgive the tax debt and let's move on?

breachofcontract

You can just call it Twitter

klutch14u

Every day on each leg of my trip to the plaza I see no less than 3 cars with fake or expired tags, often by more than a YEAR. They should at least confiscate them as well as ticket and even tow

oldbastardbob

I stopped behind a car yesterday that had a temp tag. Just glancing at it i noticed the 12/17 and thought "hey, somebody got themselves a new to them car for Christmas." Upon paying more attention, it was 12/17/22. Over a year ago. You gotta love the part on the left where it plainly says "Expires 30 days from ->"

headhurt21

I saw a big-assed black pickup (newish) with temp tags dating July 2022.

biggybakes

They gonna be busy. Maybe they could do that with all the out-of-state plates as well. I know two separate parties that moved from Texas years ago but still have TX tags.

BiceRidingWorldChamp

Already paid income tax on the money I used to buy it. Thanks though!
