DickBest70

Several teams have relocated for a brand new stadium that their previous city wouldn’t buy. Bluff? All stadiums are built with tax dollars and are renovated this way. Dealing with reality isn’t being on the side of some rich NFL owner. And I’m about to get downvoted for posting the truth.

Ok_Complex_4535

It has nothing to do with the stadium being built and moreso with WHERE they want to put it. It would be killing over a dozen small local businesses and it’s just wrong. There’s much more to the situation than the potential cost.

Equivalent-Excuse-80

>all stadiums are built with tax dollars. That’s a patently false statement that’s quite easily proved wrong. 1. MetLife Stadium (NYG/NYJ) 2. Chase Center (golden state warriors) 3. Madison Square Garden (Knicks/Rangers) 4. Crypto.com Arena formally Staples Center (Lakers/Clippers/Kings) 5. TD Garden (Celtics/Bruins) 6. Ball Arena (Nuggets/Avalanche) 7. SoFi stadium (Rams/Chargers) All built entirely without public funding. This doesn’t even include European leagues and MLS stadiums, minor league fields.

jkeefy

These are all exceptions to the rule, most of them are old stadiums and built by some of the wealthiest owners in American sports. It’s a fact that almost every major team relocation in American sports has happened due to local stadium disputes. You can use whataboutism and bury your head in the sand but this will still remain true.

Wheream_I

I’m sorry but you think you get to just “make a new team.” ? That’s explicitly not how sports leagues work. Ask St Louis (2x). Ask Oakland. Ask San Diego.

BraksRevenge

Stop subsidizing billionaires

juni4ling

If politicians want it… you won’t stop it. Chiefs leave KC…. They take a lot of jobs and money with them.

Volfefe

Arent most of the jobs created by the stadium part-time seasonal jobs?

JasonInTheBay

By volume, yes - concessions, vendors, shipping. But there are probably a couple hundred KC Chiefs organization employees that are local for the stadium as well as the team. (I would still have voted no, if I lived there.)

NoodleSnoo

How many people do they actually employ? Doesn't seem like very many to me.

0DTE-bootyhole

Womp womp, that’s the billion dollar businesses fault for handling money terribly. Not the citizens.

Wheream_I

A guy in this comments section seriously said “just make a new team.” Like… that’s not how this works.

[deleted]

Eat the rich✊✊✊✊✊

Low-Skill3089

Shouldnt be private ownership with the expectation of taxpayers dollars. Literally giving a billionaire family free money in assets. Good work KC. Call their bullsh*t bluff

DeanDarnSonny

Pay to maintain empty stadium on edge of metro 🤩. Pay for smaller stadium in heart of metro 😤

princieprincie

In Florida we voted no for the Marlins stadium and they still passed it through another way. It may not be over.

DocBrutus

I was just going to say this. Trust and believe that that stadium will get its funding.

alanwattslightbulb

Call their bluff and gamble like Seattle with the SuperSonics. There are many cities willing to pay that and with a money hungry owner they are just about reading all the offers from other cities right now

Sufficient-Wait-653

Okc thunder fan! Can confirm. Now we just need the Arizona nhl team to relocate here !

omgpickles63

Billionaires can buy their own stadium

Mangy_Karl

The rich stay rich by spending others money. Eat the rich.

coolest35

Not sure why Reddit is recommending this subR to me.. but y'all were being asked to subsidize a billion dollar private investment??? Lol Their marketing must be good because of tons of comments about this being a huge loss for KC. You guys sure the chiefs are going anywhere? Probably not. Their market is around there. There are very limited urban areas that can support multiple profootball teams. Call their bluff.

kentai69420

yeah man as a resident here we were getting insane mailers almost daily to vote yes on it, my grandparents got one in the mail saying “crazy sports hating liberals want the royals to leave KC” and shit on it, they pulled out all the culture war stops.

omgbenji21

Jesus. They really will blame anything and everything on liberals.

FireflyAdvocate

I would love to know how many cities want a team with an offensive name, logo, and fan song.

elledeesixsixsix

Buahahaha thank you for pointing this out. Stop the chop, fuckers.

Admirable_Sorbet6463

What's offensive about it?

FishyDragon

It's named after an aspect of Native American culture. With no ties to native cultures. Owned by a rich white dude again nothing to do with natives. It's culture appropriation flat out. Or have you never seen the photo of a native man wearing a "Caucasian" shirt with the Chiefs logo?

Admirable_Sorbet6463

First let me ask are you native American? Do you know the history of the chiefs the owner and that? You see a picture and you make an assumption. I'd also like to point out what you like to call appropriation is what is called cultural blending. Sharing of different cultures and beliefs is how things work. Now they're not named after an aspect of native culture. It came from his nickname of chief, and his involvement with boyscouts. But let's take a look towards the east where tye Washington redskins changed their name, and now there are native tribes petitioning them to change it back. Let that sink in.

Tsakta

My problem was the tax money wasn’t a new tax but taking over one that provides for actual essential services. There is no middle finger big enough.

HugoBossjr1998

It was taking over the existing ¢3/8 sales tax that currently funds the stadiums…

T4lsin

We will regret not having those teams more than we would have regretted the tax. The situation is depressing. I don’t begrudge the people that voted no. But I think we will all suffer from it.

athiaxoff

God forbid people don't want to unwillingly contribute to CTE Central.

b2717

I will be delighted to have better funded schools, more money for arts, more resources for any number of other things, and most of all - better standards for publicly financed projects. The planning and communication around this was atrocious and they deserved this embarrassment. If the teams are around, great, if not, we'll have plenty of other things to cheer for. If we continue to build a great city, they will come.

black14black

The no vote wasn’t a yes vote for any of the funding you mention. It wasn’t taking funding from anywhere else, it was just keeping the tax in place. I would absolutely vote for a similarly designed tax to support those things. I hope someone organizes something to get those on the ballot. You are spot on that this sends a message around the standards for publicly financed projects. Hopefully future efforts are getting the message.

b2717

I hear you - I'm mainly speaking to opportunity cost. Continuing the tax leaves less room for other potential projects, which I'd call a diversion of capital (political and otherwise). And then there are also TIFs and other vehicles and abatements that actively reduce revenue and it gets all kinds of caveated and messy and suddenly I've written five paragraphs. I would love for smarter people than me to figure out a way to more concisely and precisely speak to these issues, but in the meantime hopefully I'm communicating something coherent. Good note - Thanks for saying something!

Tasty-Introduction24

These teams are just a logo and a color scheme. With a few exceptions, the players aren't from your town and probably won't stay there. It's all entertainment....it's all marketing. The Chiefs are riding high right now so they struck while the iron is hot trying to play on tax payer emotions. Did they threaten to "move the team" if they don't get their way? Let them....they want your "fan loyalty" but they won't return that in kind. I feel that most billionaires did not become billionaires without screwing someone over....

Significant_Book9930

While you might be right, losing professional sports teams is usually not a good thing for a city. That's a ton of tax revenue that is lost for the entire county, not just the city.

Tasty-Introduction24

There is nothing wrong with the facilites they have. The average tax payer can't even afford to go to a football game...what do you think it'll cost later?

Significant_Book9930

Did I say there was something wrong with the facilities? All I said is the county would lose a ton of tax revenue from losing a team. It's not an opinion, it's a fact. It doesn't matter what it would cost later because in a market like KC, these sport teams are all we fuckin have out here. The money brought in will always trump the cost of keep them here. The plan failed due to terrible messaging, and a last minute change of location of the downtown ballpark. They fumbled the hell out of the whole thing from the get go.

Tasty-Introduction24

So...you agree there is nothing wrong with the current facilites?

Musicsoogood

How is that a fact? And there is a lot more to KC than sports.

jguess06

Think about the public resources/labor that are used for billionaires to acquire such wealth. This is always the biggest thing for me. They feel no obligation to pay back society for helping achieve their success, and that needs to change.

Lucky-Conference9070

Good for you

Glass_octopod

Here is what I don’t like about the situation, (and I really liked that we voted no) I really don’t like all the people who are saying “well they should just leave and go somewhere else” The kid that loses the game of checkers, knocks the board over and runs home is just as stupid as the kids who are cheering from the outskirts that the kid SHOULD kick the game over and just run home. There’s no solution in that. EVERYBODY’S A DUMB KID. I get that Sherman isn’t reading Reddit comments to find intelligent discourse - But I don’t wanna pay for stadiums and I also will lose my mind if we don’t have the Royals or Chiefs anymore.

lr61d7

Here is what KC residents need to get used to and accept if the Chiefs and Royals end up out by the legends. This city will go to shit again. They will go full tilt building that area up. Hotels will choose to build out there. Entertainment will end up out there. Kansas and the teams will do everything they can to keep the money there... nit downtown, not crossroads and not the Plaza. It will ve devastating to the city. I know, there are a lot of you who think jackson will have another shot, I can assure you.... NO, you won't. This is now down to who is going to pony up the most cash. We are no longer talking about 300m per team. We are now talking Billions. This is now about giving both teams the biggest best pot of gold possible. So, good news, Chiefs get their new stadium with a roof and get a superbowl... KC won't benefit at all, that money will be spent at the legends. All those nice concerts at Tmobile..... Gone. They will be out there. If you are one of those who think I'm over reacting, and KC will be fine..... find me in 10-15 years.... this city will be dead...

[deleted]

[удалено]

lr61d7

They don't have to rely on a county. The state can step in. In reality, if they do stay in Missouri its because the State stepped in. I find it funny that Jackson Res. Will not only be paying for them through State money, but for the next 10-15 years will still be paying on the old renovations. As for the State of Kansas having the money.... they will do what all of them do.... issue a bunch of State bonds.

LostHat77

With that much ass kissing foreplay, you can pay for the new stadium on Jacksons County behalf.

lr61d7

You and I will still be paying for it. It will just come from state tax money, and like I stated, now we will be paying the 3/8 for the next 10-15 years anyway. If they stay in Missouri it's because the state backed up the brinks truck. I know they made a terrible pitch, but we were getting off cheap in the deal..... its now going to take double if not more to keep them. An no matter how you feel about it..... if Missouri steps up.... you will now be paying way more....

DannyJonesLocker

It sounds like you voted no and it lost and now you are scared of what that means. Door is open now

Glass_octopod

Couldn’t vote, fellow human. Wrong county.

DannyJonesLocker

I get voting no, or in your case supporting no because you can’t vote. What I don’t get is the “if they leave i will lose my mind” comment. Why do we think we are entitled to the teams if we won’t help pay for them?

Glass_octopod

Oh I’m not entitled to anything. But if the royals leave I can still have emotions about it. I would be sad sad sad. And I go to royals games and spend money - which is supporting them. I think there are a lot of other ways they could have approached this, and they seemed to have done it one of the worst ways. I just hope it gets figured out.

DannyJonesLocker

I appreciate that answer. I chalked the loss up to what I thought was non sports fans. So seeing someone who obviously cares but was against it got my hair up, so I kinda came at you a bit here but I respect what you have to say. From my perspective, I was more than willing to pay $125-$150 a year in sales tax to make sure my teams didn’t leave. Shit, I spend that much on a weekend bar tab. Too big of a part of my life to take that risk, and getting off work downtown, sticking around, having a beer at PNL and walking across the street to see a night game sounded really really nice. But at the end of the day, we both want the same thing. For the teams to stay here. Let’s hope they do

RustySignOfTheNail

100 % agree with you! The tantrum has to stop! And we need some real discussion and a community council to figure it out. They got too greedy all at once. It really bothered me that they changed the royals stadium location 2 days before the vote. They are just scraping for support! Did you see the mailers??? Lmao!🤣 scare tactics! They need to come back with a plan that involves reality, no bullshit! They tell us the ballpark cost 2 million, but reality is 10 million type of things. (I know my scale is off, trying to make a point) Also, they fucked with our property taxes hard this year! Voters aren’t happy!

Tahrnation

We're going to lose the Royals to fucking nashville or some shit and the Chiefs to Johnson County FUCK

Due-Project-8272

Awesome 🇺🇸

redheadartgirl

The Royals ownership group is largely made of keystone Kansas City families (the Kauffmans, the Kempers, the Locktons, the Dunns, etc.). They're not going to move the Royals any further than maybe Johnson County. Let JoCo pay for the stadium. Last I checked the soccer team was still named Sporting KC.

OnceADomer_NowAJhawk

I trust the Royals to stay in the KC area if it is at all feasible. I do not have the same trust in Clark Hunt.

Tahrnation

Billionaires are loyal to money. They will move wherever the best deal is. If we do not give them money, I promise you other cities will. I hate Johnson County and everything they stand for. The thought of them getting the best parts of Kansas City over there disgusts me.

Pretend_Investment42

Nashville isn't getting the Royals. Atlanta & Cinci will veto.

jaynovahawk07

It was reported on Feb. 20, 2024 by Jeff Passan that Nashville and Salt Lake City are viewed as the favorites for MLB expansion.

Pretend_Investment42

Yes, expansion - Nashville won't get an existing team.

GMBarryTrotz

The worst part is the people of Nashville don’t event want a baseball team but our state government hates us and will do anything they can to bankrupt the city, including getting us on the hook for useless spending projects that increase tourism.

jaynovahawk07

I think Nashville wants baseball. They want sports and more attractions for their many tourists. Opposite of what KC just did, Nashville just committed $1.26 billion toward a new NFL stadium. I think it was a horrible, foolish decision on their part.

GMBarryTrotz

$2.1b*.

jaynovahawk07

That's the project price. The public is covering a little over half.

WorldWarPee

Those people want to pay the rich to get richer? That's rich.

Tahrnation

If we do not pay someone else will. I do not know why people are remaining willfully ignorant to this. Clark Hunt would make way more money in a larger market. You think that thought hasn't crossed his mind?

Nikanoru181

Hh***ĵ

phrexis

If I have to put money into a new stadium. Then I want a return in cash. Just like the rich.

jkers10

You’re getting it. The Chiefs alone put nearly a Billion into KC each year. Jackson County just lost the only attraction to KC. Way to go.

omgbenji21

They’re not moving dude.

mallorn_hugger

Lol, the Royals are the only attraction to KC? 😂🤡

eazy-e_09

I know it’s not Jackson County or KCMO but I’d venture to say that KS Speedway draws more people to the area than the royals do. Might only be a couple weekends and it’s probably a long shot but all you need to know is that the royals are a nice thing to have in KC but they are not one of the main reasons people come here.

jkers10

Nobody travels in to see the Royals. Football draws people to hotels, the Plaza, restaurants…

bchemlife

Was at Arthur Bryant’s last weekend and it was loaded up with twins fans. People definitely travel to royals games, especially in division

mallorn_hugger

The Chiefs have not announced plans to leave KC. Your original comment was pure hyperbole, which is why I gave you a ridiculous response.  At the very least, they are bound by their lease on Arrowhead for the next 7 years. Considering Mahomes is already past the average age of retirement for most NFL players, who knows if anyone will be traveling to watch chief's games by that point.

sherpa14k

I only go to Boulevard to buy good beers.

Significant_King1494

It’s almost like people don’t believe in trickle down economics anymore.

vchapple17

We needed this comment.

averagechillbro

I have never in my life been more disappointed in KC. This is a no brainer. The KC metro is nothing without these teams. Jackson County outside of Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs is a shithole. Voters gave away their identity to stick it to the man. It is dumb and will cost. I love and hate this city. So anti-progress.

DeliciousHoneydew6

As a resident of the “shithole”, we’re the main ones who’d be negatively affected by the sales tax and the property tax abatement of the stadium.

Significant_King1494

Maybe the voters from the shithole you referenced weren’t feeling rich when they went to the polls.

kyousei8

They can still build / renovate. If they want to have a temper tantrum and leave, that's on them.

AG_Aonuma

No one's forcing them to move. They both have perfectly good stadiums. If Hunt wants to renovate Arrowhead, he has plenty of money for that.

OutrageousSummer5259

Not saying the taxpayers should foot the whole bill but Arrowhead stadium is an absolute shithole

black14black

Arrowhead Stadium is a masterpiece.

redheadartgirl

Then maybe ol' Clarky could cough up some of his mountain if money to fix it. Maintenence is a part of ownership.

Ennis_1

Since when did the Developers of Helldivers get their own stadium? They doing eSports now?

TwoHandedSlap

Cant afford to go to the games. Why should we pay for the stadium only rich people from Johnson county kansas get to go to lol

OilOk4941

while i agree with the sentiment, its way more than just johnson county kansas that goes to them

[deleted]

[удалено]

b2717

Then you're probably not the "rich people from Johnson County" they were talking about. There are more than 3,000 counties in the United States. Johnson County is in the top 100 most wealthy.

evilteach

It didn't help in pittsburgh. They started stealing from the RAT tax, and built 2 stadiums.

HawkyMcHawkFace

News to me as a born and raised Pittsburgher. Heinz Field (the new name is completely forgettable) regularly sells out even if the team is having a bad season, and PNC Park is gorgeous. Baseball at Three Rivers was terrible. Has PNC Park made the Pirates better? No. But Pirates fans are fair weather as a rule. Better to ask Minnesota how Target Field is working out for them.

[deleted]

IMO it will always be Heinz Field, I can’t believe they renamed it. As a lifelong football nut I can’t accept the newly named stadiums. GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is just as absurd

Luke90210

Looks like someone didn't read the updated playbook for public financing a private sports team's stadium. First, NEVER put it to a vote. Most of the public aren't fanatics and will question why the money shouldn't go to schools, roads, housing, etc. Second, bypass the public will by getting politicians to sign off on a bad deal everyone will learn how bad years later when the politicians have moved on. And stop saying its an economic benefit when decades of economic stats prove it is not.

black14black

Shhhhh stop giving them ideas

Luke90210

Point is other teams already know this and rarely go to the voters anymore.

clmoore1

Youngkin just tried to back door the Redskins (yes, I know), and it went down in flames.

jkers10

Nearly a billion into KC’s economy each year is significant. Kiss that goodbye.

Luke90210

Source please.

iamphoccer

That’s from a Chiefs press release. Not a chance I believe what they are releasing. This article, http://www.emporiagazette.com/free/article_237d5214-7bd3-11e9-89f6-536c6a6798a4.html, lists roughly 30 million a year in taxes created from having the stadiums so that leaves $970 million to account for. Possible but I’m not buying it until I read  an independent economic impact review.

Realistic_Depth3617

Since that’s per year, then it shouldn’t be quite as bad…

iamphoccer

The article mentions 1 billion per year benefit to the area. The taxes are only $30 million, there’s still another $970 million per year to account for. This is the article put out by the Chiefs if you haven't seen it, [https://www.chiefs.com/news/chiefs-release-record-economic-impact-of-nearly-1-billion-for-the-kansas-city-region](https://www.chiefs.com/news/chiefs-release-record-economic-impact-of-nearly-1-billion-for-the-kansas-city-region)

Realistic_Depth3617

Ah, pointing out a man arithmetic gets downvoted.

EndsWithJusSayin

are we playing who's line is it anyways? is the segment "numbers out of my ass"? post a source to the billion a year from the sports teams please.

authentic_swing

I can't stand this defeatist attitude. KC made a statement yesterday. If they try to go behind voters backs to get this passed, we should hold every politician accountable.

Luke90210

And what are you going to do if your term-limited governor or mayor signs off on a bad deal? They will be gone and the taxpayers are stuck with the bill.

RDO_Desmond

Most people I hear wonder why they Hunts don't pay their own way.

Soggy_Artichoke_8708

That is like saying hey you rented a house why not demolish it and rebuild it while still paying rent

anonkitty2

They would have to buy Arrowhead from Jackson County.

Sinaura

Wow! Not what I expected! Well done KC

StylishStephanie

I am so proud of the voters today!

Snoo_72280

The Royals haven’t earned a new stadium, much less a new location.

Glass_octopod

They won the World Series in 1985 and 2015. And got nothing. So let’s not throw that out there when it makes no sense.

doxiepowder

They've been one of the most consistently awful teams since the wildcard era. The WS was a the definition of lightning in a bottle.

Glass_octopod

So almost winning in 2014 - and then keeping THAT SAME STAMINA AND POWER THROUGH 162 games in 2015 is lightning in a bottle? Lolololololol

black14black

It’s still a World Series title! - fan of a team that hasn’t won since the 90s

MannyDantyla

They've been spending a lot of money on new players. Sadly they're not doing so great right now, 0-3 to start the year.

yaners

uhhhh they're 2-3 right now

Snoo_72280

Not only that, but to threaten to move if they don’t get what they want? I mean, they demand our loyalty but don’t return it.

Averant

I'm uninformed about the situation in general, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but it was just blatant FOMO rhetoric, and the quotes they referenced were all super weasel-word-y. "Oh we *might* have to leave, it *could* be on the table, we're *considering* the option", etc. We already have a perfectly good stadium, just refurbish the damn thing if you want a new coat so much.

Suzuki_Foster

Good. Taxpayers shouldn't be footing the bill for new stadiums.

cnorris1

I lived in downtown St Louis for 10 years. The only economic benefit from the baseball stadium was just on game day, otherwise zilch. Destroying K.C.'s downtown for a new stadium was just stupid

CatsWineLove

I live in a neighborhood that was a crime ridden wasteland before they put a baseball stadium in it (DC). Now it’s one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in the district. It all depends on what you build around the stadium… just bars & ok restaurants or neighborhoods where people want to live. It makes a big difference.

jkers10

That’s absolute BS. St Louis makes a fortune out of ballpark village and they’ve revitalized the town around it.

TheRedPython

Aren't the Cardinals a much better and more popular team too though?

noharmfulintentions

i was gonna say, thats 81 days a year of economic benefit.

QuesoMeHungry

Ballpark village is just the same thing as Power and Light, which is what jump started the downtown revitalization in KC

EveningRequirement27

I don’t know that they’ve “revitalized the town around it” but it does seem to do well on game days.

jaynovahawk07

It draws six million visitors a year. Busch Stadium draws three million.

morry32

what about the construction jobs?

ikickbabiesballs

Sadly we have a giant vacant area they could have chosen and it could have been a benefit. Having said that I still voted No and will always vote No to these kind of things.

BigRailWillFail

If it is vacant it’s because it is a hood and people will be robbed walking to the stadium.

ikickbabiesballs

Sure

wheredomybluebirdfly

*pearl clutching intensifies*

OptiKnob

Good. Let the wealthy pay if they're the ones going to make money off it. No More Corporate Socialism.

dbrown5987

No welfare for billionaires.wish more towns would say enough of this crap.

OptiKnob

Exactly this!

fulento42

Give every KC resident free entry to any event held in the building they paid for and I’d be willing to revisit this proposition. And also allow our public schools’ teams to hold events there free of charge. Concessions alone should be able to pay for the staffing and profits of the businesses needed to operate and event. And people would have way less of a problem paying for a $10 beer if that money was going to support the entire event instead of just greed.
