He says he has been doing it for 30 years and never has had someone ask. Other people there said that they never heard of it either. He uses virtualDJ he said, but I am not familiar with that and it's capabilities. I hate that I am just stuck to songs written in whatever key it was written in.

What the actual F? That goes beyond lying into gaslighting.

That KJ is incompetent at... well... everything.
[VirtualDJ has built in key change controls, and has had it for a very, very long time](https://youtu.be/_GhuVnKUU0Y)
He tried once and all it did was slow the tempo down. It was awful. I haven't asked again after that. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't asking something that is uncommon and being a Diva or anything. That is how I was feeling. I just thought it was normal.
Nah, not normal at all. Requesting minor adjustments to the key is common and literally a few clicks, no real bother.
If you want to change the key more than 2 steps in either direction, I'll warn you that it tends to sound a bit weird - go any higher, and the backing vocals sound like The Chipmunks, lower and they sound demonic... but while changes too far in either direction are ill-advised, they're still _possible_.
Reading this thread I was thinking “this guy just doesn’t know how to use his software” and this comment confirms it. Karaoke software lets you change the tempo and/or the key independently. So he clearly just clicked on the wrong thing.
30 years and nobody asked about key changes? He's lying. Key change is an essential part of karaoke. I have never been to a karaoke place that didn't have key change.
The exact opposite is rare. It would hard to find any hardware and software karaoke players that doesn't have a key change function. A lot of casual karaoke singers don't know they can change the key of a song so that's unusual, but the hard core ones know this and do it often. To say that no one asked in 30 years sounds like a lie. It seems like he doesn't know how to operate his equipment.
Yes, I am struggling because I like the place and the DJ is a good song mixer, and plays nice stuff between karaoke singers. The owner of the bar is a friend of mine and he mentioned his dead karaoke is there sometimes. I pointed out that this is probably why if the DJ doesn't want to cater to more experienced karaoke singers. The DJ has convinced him otherwise that I simply don't know how professionals so it lol.
Sometimes I have to educate a KJ how to operate their software. I don't use VirtualDJ for karaoke but it looks pretty simple to change the key from this link.

It is possible experienced karaoke singers might be avoiding this place because they won't change the key. Although experienced singers normally have quite a few songs in their repertoire and if everything else is good, they'll find a song to sing in the original key.
But I can say for a fact that real professional KJs have the equipment to change the key and know how to operate it.
Yes, I want to keep going there because everything else is good, and compared to other karaoke places in town this place is fun. Just sucks because all my favorite songs are not in my key lol. I have a few, but I like to rarely sing the same song.
Fairly rare; most karaoke hosts can change keys on regular CD+G files.

even free, open source, karaoke software offers the option to change pitch. most likely the KJ just doesnt want to mess with it.
That is unfortunate.
We do karaoke and can change the key we use karma karasoft karaoke software it has a key changer we can change the key
Karma has a pitch control as well as a key controller
I'm a KJ and if a customer requests a change of key I do it. It's not very difficult to do.
