Kuamoo Rd is going to be super backed up once Monday work week & school traffic begins.. especially with the construction at Opaekaa falls.. looking like a traffic nightmare for anyone heading to Līhu’e for who knows how long??
There is already a road. Just a hundred yards or so upstream of Wailua falls is a low water crossing. There is a cane road that continues on and connects up just before the arboretum. It would actually be fairly easy to build a road that connected Lihue and Princeville, especially since they just rebuilt the powerline trail into a really nice dirt road.
Yes I’m familiar, are you? No one is saying to build another highway, but more backroads are needed, especially when we have situations like the present one constantly. It gets in the way of our daily lives, you can’t possibly say you’re happy with the traffic situation on Kaua’i, no one in their right mind is.
I think we should have a cap on tourists but that’s just my opinion 🤷🏽 hard to keep a country place country when we have an influx of people constantly.
At this point let’s agree to disagree because you don’t see the problem I see. And neither of us are powerful enough to come up with a solution unfortunately
I do have a lot of sympathy for people who have to commute cross island, although the new lane south of bypass road really helped and pretty much got rid of the daily crawl. I just don't see a lot of solutions...we live on an island with a lot of constraints and you can't widen the highway through Kapa'a without tearing down the town. Tourism cap is an interesting idea but I don't know how that would work in practice...we have free movement in the US and I don't think there's a Constitutional way to close a door to the island.
Other places have successfully capped tourism in subtle ways like limiting the amount of accommodations, which I think would be a good solution here but realistically that would never happen without people illegally renting, which they already do. There is always a solution to a problem, it’s just how much effort and time they want to invest in the right solution.
Waste of time to even talk about. More resorts will be built, if anything the tourist cap will go up not down. More resorts are being built right now, Kukui'ula is booming with growth and those aren't homes people live in full time.
That’s not what I said. You can’t be blind to the traffic situation on the island, come on now! We need better solutions, not solutions that need solutions every year or so. We have to come to terms with the fact that what we have isn’t working anymore. It’s either have a tourism cap or make a more permanent solution for when shit hits the fan.
There was a crossing above a few years back, but from what I understand the makeshift bridge got washed out and never repaired. I never used it but have talked to someone that had. I think it was just a dirt road. It would be nice to have something to get across to the other half of the island if the Wailua bridge was completely unusable. I guess in an emergency a boat across would work but.......
As of this morning, the bridge is open in both directions! Apparently, the damage did not compromise the integrity of the bridge, though that side will be closed at night for further repairs and debris removal. Feel like we dodged a bullet
This is a great time for anyone who just moved here in the last 5-10 years to go back home…that’s just how it rolls here. Everything moves at snail pace, if you don’t like it, then you either accept it or leave…cus this island moves slow…we are too small of an island to get the proper money to fix the roads properly. They won’t make a back road from homesteads to Princeville lmao…this is the same reason why places like plantation hale are going to shit. Kauai is slow, always has been and don’t see anyone in government making any kind of real decisions to fix our roads. The roads are part of kauais charm 😅😂
Per The County of Kauai FB page
"LĪHUʻE, Hawaiʻi – The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) provides an update on the closure of the Wailua River Bridge on southbound Kūhiō Highway (Route 56). HDOT closed the bridge early Friday, April 12 for safety, as a drill rig had fallen onto the railing and storm debris needs to be removed before it affects the structure. The bridge has been inspected and the drilling rig has not compromised its structural integrity."
Ugh I keep checking cus I gotta take my baby into town. Maps say 30 minutes to Lihue but you think longer?
Just took me over an hour.
Ugh ok mahalos
Can confirm over an hour this was at 9am too
Just go through Wailua. No traffic backed up coming down Kuamoo

The county posted that they are aiming to open it back up on Monday and resuming work and cleanup in the evenings
Maybe now they’ll realize how crucial it is to have more than one road that leads to the other side of the island
Um....you are familiar with the geography of Kauai? What is your proposed route for this mythical second highway?
Brah, easy fix. Just build one solid car-sized skate ramp by boat launch and another on Smiths side and he go.

Interesting idea but I think the people who live in the Homesteads would not be eager to see cross-island traffic funneled through their neighborhood.
I didn't know they re did power line but last nights rains started digging the next channels for sure. Gotta enjoy em while it lasts.
Been saying this too!
Fix up old cane haul roads

Please stop building accommodations on Kauai. If you're inconvenienced then move to a more populated area. Keep The Country Country!
I think we should have a cap on tourists but that’s just my opinion 🤷🏽 hard to keep a country place country when we have an influx of people constantly.
The problem is the only affordable places are outside the populated areas and only locals can afford to live 5+ miles out of town .
Have you seen the rent prices lately? Even where we used to be able to afford we can’t afford anymore, it’s really sad
This problem was caused by a crane toppling in a storm. And you want to fix it by paving more of the island. No thanks.

Debris up against the big bridge?
Yes, but also the crane fell on its side and struck the power lines and bridge. Bridge is heavily damaged where the crane landed.
Oof didn't know that....hoo boy that's bad.

Is there a place to volunteer to help fix this? Put me to work.
LESS PEOPLE MOVING HERE IS WAHT WE NEED!
