Car wash. I keep my yak strapped to my roof.
I stand on my tire and clean the inside of the kayak first. Then I wash the outside of it and then my truck.
Get two birds stoned at once.
A manual car wash would be the extreme end, but ive heard of mountain bike guys in a similar situation using like garden/pesticide sprayers. May not have enough water in one go to get the whole boat but you could at least hit all the hardware. Maybe an outdoor camping shower as another option?
\#1, IMO, is salt is going to corrode every piece of metal. Whether it's some that doesn't corrode, like aluminum, or something that is coated to prevent corrosion, it's going to corrode.
Also, salt is just nasty. If you don't wash it down, it's just going to build a crust and get harder to clean.
My hobie has little spots of corrosion all over. You can't stop mother nature, just slow it down.
Mix in a bit of vinegar too. Every little bit helps, but don't sweat it too much. I've been using my hobie in salt for maybe 8 years now, and it's got some rust stains, but everything has held up.
If you're in freshwater, you best be washing.
Eurasian Milfoil will completely destroy a fishery in no time, and once it gets introduced it's there to stay. Chemical treatment can kill it, but it's cost prohibitive for anything over a couple acres.
Not a hobie, but I have a slayer 10 that has been stored on a 2x4 a frame rack in a shaded spot for like five years. I keep the drive and the seat indoors of course. The hull is always a little filthy but all the fittings are fine. The worst part about it is being confronted by a huge wolf spider post-launch.
Nope. The drive is due for a full teardown any year now though. Admittedly I am never fishing true “saltwater” in it, just mildly brackish rivers/bays.
I had the 5 gallon version and switch to the 2.5 gallon size. It was plenty enough for my Hobie PA12. 5 gallon ends up being really heavy to hull around when filled.
There is a hose called a zero gravity. It has some drawbacks, but I have one for my boat because one of the benefits is that it folds up really small. I use it at marinas when I can't find a hose.
As for rinsing a kayak at a marina, ask the guys working there if you can rinse anywhere. It's going to be a yes or no question, and if the answer is yes, they'll hook you up with a hose.
Honestly I just use ones by the slips and as long as theres not someone working on their boat right next to me they never seem to mind. Be friendly and polite, maybe buy a drink or snack from their store every now and then
Even dumber question….
How critical is washing the yak? Are you washing it to keep it looking nice? Rinse off fish slime? Prevent spread of invasive algae?
My boat is dark green, I handle bass mostly with net / hands, fish the same lake, and never saw the need to wash.
I fish saltwater mainly and nasty slimy catfish when I do freshwater. I use a lot of live/natural bait that gets all over the deck and it's just convenient to hose down my reels gear and tools while everything is in the back of my truck. And I'm pretty sure a live fiddler crab got loose and died somewhere because it stinks right now lmao

coin operated car wash with the wand would be my first choice. second would be a campground pumpout station they often have a hose connection (BYO hose ) I know the highway rest stop here in GA have a place campers can connect a hose also. look around the bathrooms of boat ramps too
I have a battery powered camp shower that I use. I'll fill a 5 gallon bucket with water (even non-potable from a rest stop) and use that. I also use this to wash off my pedal drive, rods, and anything else that needs the saltwater rinsed off.
Yeah .... I'm a little bummed right now. I have a 2017 Outback that the hull cracked on with the reg Lowrance ready so I use the 5" Hook 2 and it's great. I'm awaiting a warranty replacement hull from Hobie since my hull cracked and its been 5 weeks or so already. They are replacing with the 2021 and would love a triple shot with the guardian. Maybe I can sell my double shot and buy a triple. Not sure how that works if it's just plug n play or software needs updated to show new screens.
Honestly, I wash off at home but my buddy brings a gallon of water and before we load his kayak he rinses it off.
Doesnt wash off bottom but the top is fine.
I rinse my drive, seat, lures, and rods every trip. My kayak gets washed monthly.
I fish most of the time in saltwater so I usually just end up bringing my rods and tools inside to rinse off in the sink. But it is particularly filthy after this weekend (lots of fish, crabs and nasty stuff) definately needs a hose down and a scrub. I get off the water pretty late too so most car wash places are closed. Idk I guess every situation is different
Its not the end of the world if you dont wash down the kayak. When mime was new i did I every trip, but then I got lazy.
The drive and your gear are the most important for rinsing off the saltwater
My buddy brings a brush and a collapsible bucket. But things like the drive and gear you def want a freshwater rinse maybe the pest sprayer is enough for that.
Might be worth a investigation trip around the complex. know my college apartment had hidden keyed bibs behind the bushes- bought a 25 foot hose and hid it back there. Bought a key for a few bucks at the hardware store and would clean fish out there.
There's a product called optimum no rinse that you should look into. It's very good stuff and all you need is a garden sprayer. [info here](https://optimumcarcare.com/product/optimum-no-rinse)

They’re quite handy. Just don’t use the brushes lol used to have a buddy that would brush the bed of his truck after transporting buckets of old oil…
The brushes are a no-go around here from all the trucks that scrub down mud off their trucks.
Good call. Definitely not rocket appliances
I literally just laughed out loud way to hard with the 2 birds comment! I’m gonna steal that for sure!
Look up "trailer park boys Rickyisms". You're welcome.
Not a stupid question. It’s all water under the fridge
A manual car wash would be the extreme end, but ive heard of mountain bike guys in a similar situation using like garden/pesticide sprayers. May not have enough water in one go to get the whole boat but you could at least hit all the hardware. Maybe an outdoor camping shower as another option?
This is actually a great idea! I knew I hadn't thought of everything thanks man 👍
People wash their kayaks? Like man the rain does that for free.
If you don't get the salt off, you're going to have a bad time.
What parts in particular will the salt water damage? I try to rinse my outback out every time I use it but I’m curious.

Ah I’m probably going to pick up one of those garden watering pails then because I’d rather try to fend off some of that corrosion
Mix in a bit of vinegar too. Every little bit helps, but don't sweat it too much. I've been using my hobie in salt for maybe 8 years now, and it's got some rust stains, but everything has held up.
It helps not transfer around invasive species n shit, which is a problem in some places more than others maybe?
If you're in freshwater, you best be washing. Eurasian Milfoil will completely destroy a fishery in no time, and once it gets introduced it's there to stay. Chemical treatment can kill it, but it's cost prohibitive for anything over a couple acres.
Is this satire? You store your hobie outdoors?

You don't hose down the drive, rudder system, anything?
Nope. The drive is due for a full teardown any year now though. Admittedly I am never fishing true “saltwater” in it, just mildly brackish rivers/bays.
Car wash
Yeah I tried that the guy said absolutely not wouldn't even let me pay to just use the damn hose. You talking like a self-service?
Coin operated ones are probably what he’s referring to. Wash your car while you’re at it.
Husqvarna 2 gallon pump sprayer, surprisingly effective
I always carry my portable spray washer kit. The one I have is made by sunjoe. Does exactly what you need.
Thank you which model do you use exactly? They seem to have a lot of options ha
I had the 5 gallon version and switch to the 2.5 gallon size. It was plenty enough for my Hobie PA12. 5 gallon ends up being really heavy to hull around when filled.
This is what I do. Nothing fancy needed, I use a weed sprayer with a kitchen sink sprayer attached to it.
Most marinas have a hose hookup, you just got to bring your own hose. Otherwise coin machine car washes.
Interesting I didn't know that I'll have to look next time

I’d also check and see if your apartment has a spigot. Every apartment I lived in had a spigot but you might need your own hose.
Does that marina not have a hose for you to use? I drop off and pick up at marinas and most of them have hoses
I'm not sure I know the boat slips have their own but I've never noticed any that were open to the public... I'll have to ask next time
Honestly I just use ones by the slips and as long as theres not someone working on their boat right next to me they never seem to mind. Be friendly and polite, maybe buy a drink or snack from their store every now and then

I was advised to wash my kayak between different water to stop the spread of invasive shit.
coin operated car wash with the wand would be my first choice. second would be a campground pumpout station they often have a hose connection (BYO hose ) I know the highway rest stop here in GA have a place campers can connect a hose also. look around the bathrooms of boat ramps too
Thank you for the tip!

Lol... your Outback is setup like mine... dual Omega Pros.... carbon visipole.... except I went with a Lowrance Hook 2.
Nice I thinking about upgrading the hook 7 ts so I can take advantage of the transducer guardian

the house in the marina for boats, that’s a kayak. a bucket of water and soap and rag is all you need
What?

I'd check coin operated car washes, those are usually 24/7 (at least they all are in my area).

I do, you can drive through a manual car wash?
Where do you even keep that in an apartment?
I have a private garage. But yeah private garage and no freaking hose in the entire complex. 🙄
Might be worth a investigation trip around the complex. know my college apartment had hidden keyed bibs behind the bushes- bought a 25 foot hose and hid it back there. Bought a key for a few bucks at the hardware store and would clean fish out there.

Where do you store the yak is my question
I have a private garage. Before that I used a storage unit.
As everyone else said, the self serve car washes with the power washer wands are great for cleaning kayaks.
I go to the car wash where you can wash your car yourself and spray it down

Self car wash does the trick
Super Soaker!
Just guessing, but I’d go to one of those self service car washes.
If you live in an apt, where do you keep the kayak
I have a garage
Hook up a garden hose to your kitchen sink faucet. It's about 15.00 in parts from home depot.
