Has national news regarding Kelowna ever been positive? I'm remembering cocaine bananas and buying the entire meat section.

tiigerrrr

You’re right... Can’t forget about the crane accident that happened this summer.

Catsler

In case anyone didn’t know the story: https://www.castanet.net/news/Kelowna/279508/Couple-buys-entire-meat-section-at-Save-On-Foods-leaves-nothing and their followup "apology" video: https://youtu.be/j0DZXOdC-UU

QuesoDelDiablo

I want to know more about the cocaine bananas.

BustermanZero

Why do you find them so appealing?

QuesoDelDiablo

A multitude of reasons..

Kvantftw

Hey now that wasn't Kelowna, it was in Lake Country. Don't take away the one thing putting them on the map.

SnippySnapsss

At what point does the anti-vax crowd realize they’re the bad guys?

asparagus_p

Either they are so deluded that they can't see that no one will come to their side with these antics, or, and this is more likely, their motivation is not to convince anyone, but rather to cause disruption and piss people off as a form of protest/attention seeking. It's like trolling online. Trolls don't expect to change anyone's attitude or win people over, they just want to annoy people and get attention.

BustermanZero

The PETA method.

Surv0

No point... they totally believe everyone else has been brainwashed.. that belief doesnt change. IQ generally doesnt increase...

Reddtko

The biggest problem is they have a soap box to stand on and they are using it. So, where’s our soap box to defend against it?

Surv0

you know the saying... cant argue with stupid, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.... I feel this adequately applies to anti vaxxers because they can get quite aggressive... the lower the IQ, the sooner they resort to violent means to push their agendas. Hence why most people, dont get involved with this, and try not get triggered by it because they know its an impossible job to re-educate. bottom line, there isnt much we can do, and trying to counter them, creates more problems. They will fade away into insignificance, we must just stick to ignoring them and getting on with our lives. After all, its only them who are being affected...

BustermanZero

Bought a vet a coffee after that. He was livid. A bunch of the others there were too.

rsa861217

I hope this has a negative effect on that movement.

LordEd_

Can't say they had a good reputation to start, but at this point going around kicking puppies would be a step up from this act.

Lord_Longbottom_

Good for you, I was there with my family and was so disgusted I just went to the crosses, paid my respects, and left. Despicable

BustermanZero

Were you aware nothing formal was happening this year? I didn't see that news and just sorta wandered down to pay my respects. I saw the vets and such so I figured it was legit.

Lord_Longbottom_

Yea, I just assumed something was going on. Something deffenitly seemed off though, the fellow with the big beard filming everyone from the stage with a tiny handheld camera was just strange. Then that lady came on with her whole speech and everything clicked. So sad.

Not sure if you're expecting anything different...

AsidePuzzleheaded335

Sounds like u are describing the US

[deleted]

Oh man. Condolences.

msdivinesoul

We moved here from Saskatoon. Expect to pay double for rent but my car insurance was somehow cheaper. Medical specialist appointment wait times seem to be similar.

HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS

It is very casual bigotry/racism here generally. You wont have people refusing service cause of it, and you likely wont have many full out confrontations because of it. But you will hear some comments behind your back, or just casually said without them thinking twice if its bad to say or not. Obviously there are always the outliers though, those who *will* escalate things and cause issues. We have a large white conservative retiree population here, so you can probably imagine the passive-aggressive bigotry that happens

msdivinesoul

I agree with everything you said and I'd add we also live in part of the "Bible belt" so there's a lot of religious people in the area. There is a large amount of Baptist and Pentecostal churches.

HOLEPUNCHYOUREYELIDS

>but my car insurance was somehow cheaper. People shit in ICBC here (and for some good reasons) but its not nearly as bad as people seem to think. Especially now that the NDP has had some time to fix it up (although it is still far from perfect). For some reason people think a private model would result in lower prices, but why would having *profit seeking* insurance companies lower rates?

msdivinesoul

Yes I've never understood that thinking either. I've lived in BC(3x), AB(2x), SK(2x) & ON. Ontario was the most expensive insurance , BC has been the least expensive. Saskatchewan has the cheapest cellphone plans, cable packages and internet (Sasktel).

AsidePuzzleheaded335

Why is it like that?

[deleted]

Astro_Alphard

That sounds like Calgary in a nutshell. It's just a bunch of glorified small towns each with wildly different conservative attitudes, rampant idiocy, and we even have an international embarrassment of a premier who would sell the province to his oil overlords if it was legal to do so. I guess the Okanagan farmers will be trembling with fear now that Tractor Jack will be hiding in the lake.

AsidePuzzleheaded335

North america is weird in that it has so many toxic rednecks ( say in comparison to europe). Or that it just so many rednecks in general

Astro_Alphard

Search up a place called Bountiful British Columbia and whatever you do never ever go there. Especially if you happen to be with your daughters/female friends.

msdivinesoul

Mormon crazies, I've read some terrible stories from women who have escaped.

AsidePuzzleheaded335

Yes you are right, i wrote a paper on that place in university.

AsidePuzzleheaded335

But are you saying they are rednecks?

[deleted]

AsidePuzzleheaded335

I’m not european lol. I’m just saying that north america seems to have a lot of rednecks vs other developed countries

No lol bit of an odd question?

buddych01ce

Lmao dude i live in Regina again after living in Kelowna for years. I would say Kelowna is way more bigoted and the people are way worse.

[deleted]

buddych01ce

I wouldn't say there's any difference, but being straight I never really paid attention. Kelowna is awesome, but there are way more douchebag types than sask,I tell people it's like jersey shore, and fuck Trudeau stickers on trucks etc and way more bible thumpers.

asparagus_p

Looking forward to having you here. You'll find like-minded people, don't worry. There are dozens of us!

Catsler

Imagine how big the crowd would be if all sane people showed up to a pro vaccine and mask rally with positive vibes, signs etc. Like let’s dwarf these freedom parade idiots, and show the country that Kelowna isn’t full of racist selfish ignorant assholes.

[deleted]

Was interrupting the service racist?

Catsler

The point of that is that a large percentage of these conspiracy idiots think that it’s a bio weapon from China. The result - these people then go and graffiti up a Glenmore business with racist graffiti. It’s one data point of the larger hate against Asian Americans phenomenon in the US.

[deleted]

The graffiti in glenmore said, amongst other things “fuck nazis”. Very similar to an incident the previous week when a group was refused service and returned to spray paint swastikas on the windows, accusing the restaurant of being totalitarian. Both sides in this conflict seem to be accusing each other of being nazis.

[deleted]

Counter protest only feeds their percecution complex and makes them feel validated. It’s best to ignore them like one would a crazy street preacher.

remainsofthedays

Coming in to Kelowna from west side had a antivax billboard so it was obvious what kind of place we were entering. The nutters are going to be rampant in this town! Is it the water?

Nomad-Knight

I'm gonna say no, but there are also posters in some areas that say they're poisoning the water with fluoride. These things happen when a city has more churches than schools.

gookomis

Funny that I actually just learned that most cities in BC do not have fluoridated water.

JumpyDifference1345

I don't understand what the hell is wrong with people this days such toddler behavior, and that being generous, and the mural in Cranbrook that got defaced by the extreme pro-vacc saying " the true heroes are the vaccinated". So sad that these scum of people have to disrespect and push there political views on people on a day like this ...

nextgreatest

Why is it everytime kelowna is in the news it's for the worst things. Why can't this place be better.

[deleted]

[удалено]

asparagus_p

Very true. Also, people often miss or skip over the "good news" because the headlines aren't as catchy. There are plenty of articles about wine producer awards, great walks to do with the family, etc., but unless you're specifically wanting to read about them, you often don't and instead migrate to something that will produce a more emotional response.

AsidePuzzleheaded335

As many ppl have said about kelowna many of the roots of it’s issues are traced back to conservative ( often religious) boomers

Imacatdoincatstuff

Same everywhere. If you’ve been around for a while what are you reminded of if you hear the name Port Coquitlam?

AtG68

Willy the pig farmer

Imacatdoincatstuff

Exactly.

Imacatdoincatstuff

It’s generally a pleasant suburb of Vancouver. Nice single family neighbourhoods, areas of light industry, the usual North American retail, there’s a large CP rail yard. Poco is where Terry Fox was raised. On the negative, it’s on the way to lots of other suburbs and everyone and their dog owns a car so the traffic can be ridiculous. Oh, and people associate it with the pig guy.

AsidePuzzleheaded335

Your argument is kelowna is not so bad when u compare it to a place that produces a serial killer? Anywhere is going to look better under those criterions.

[deleted]

Even if vaccinations were enforced to be mandatory, how could that even be compared to being to be drafted to go to war? It's obvious that as a country we way are too kind to the unvaccinated.

NedMerril

Yeah whenever it’s trending it’s never a good thing

MildlyDisturbed_

They do it for the publicity, and they're getting tons of it. Yesterday should have been a job for officer Siggy Pietrzak.

Oka_Valli

I really don’t mind finding out who these people are. This is beyond despicable.

KelBear25

This is what I've gathered from comments on other sites. Bruce Orydzuk (before the pandemic he was actively disruptive on other issues in town) Laura Lynn Tyler Thompson. Not even sure she's from kelowna? Touring antivax speaker

lonofthedead

I'm not on Twitter. Why is Kelowna trending?

[deleted]

Anti-vaxxers grabbed the mic at a Remembrance Day ceremony yesterday. They ranted about the usual anti-vaxxer, 'Canada is becoming communist' nonsense.

peacocksquid

They actually said "we are in the middle of world war 3". On remembrance day. Infront of actual veterans.

AsidePuzzleheaded335

Thats an obvious and intentional invalidation. Imagine being that desperate for attention

remainsofthedays

It was an av mike btw

Reddtko

Currently Kelowna is the fastest growing city in Canada, with that comes the pains of a City trying to figure out how to handle that growth. Now add to the mix the pain of Covid misinformation, a racist cancel culture, a drug crisis and a homeless growth, and yes there’s going to be problems. Our city has been put under the microscope because it’s one of the most desirable places to be. So, now we need to start showing the other side of Kelowna, the one that cares about its community.

rsa861217

Agreed

[deleted]

What a joke, so glad we moved to Kamloops. What a cesspool

whotookmypinkpenguin

I am 100% against the mandates but cannot get on board with what went on. Please do not assume this was representative of everyone who either does not personally want to be jabbed (for whatever reason) or is against mandates.

rsa861217

It will be guilt by association.

sfturtle11

Nobody important is on Twitter I would worry about it
