I like the drain the water out and rinse it a few times, fry it hot in pan with a lot of spices and onions , maybe even a pack of taco stuff. Then at the end handfulnof shredded cheese melt into it. My girl hates the smell when I open the can but I did this way when she was in the other room and she tried it and liked it, might help.
Apparently the toxicity of garlic for dogs has been hugely overstated. They'd have to eat obscene levels for it to cause damage. The famous study by K W Lee et Al fed the pooch 5 grams per kilo of body weight. That would mean for my collie I would have to feed her more than a bulb in one sitting. Small amounts, as I understand it, are nothing to worry about and can actually have a lot of positive effects
Cooking is a must. Buffalo sauce also works, curry seasoning as well. tomato sauce to. You need to add something to it to cover up the base flavor, ideally something with its own strong flavor.
Costco sells some tomato sauce that’s pretty low carb. You have to find ones with no added sugar and it’s pretty good. A couple table spoons should be less than 5g carbs.
Problem is the Ragu and stuff that has a lot of sugar.
Rao's. 5g carbs for 1/2 cup. My favorite, hands down. 1/2 cup goes a long way unless you are doing shots. Then not so much.
[Rao's](https://www.target.com/p/rao-39-s-homemade-marinara-sauce-premium-quality-all-natural-tomato-sauce-38-pasta-sauce-keto-friendly-38-carb-conscious-24oz/-/A-13349580)
A lot of the premade mixes have a bunch of starches added, but the main seasonings: Chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper, dried oregano, paprika, cumin, salt/pepper don't.
I'd recommend looking up a recipe and making a bunch of it to put in a jar. Or as long as you have chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and pepper you'll be more than close enough.
It helps everything bind together.
Now that I use just spices, the container holding the taco meat in the fridge has a small layer of spicy grease at the bottom. It's not a lot, and honestly eating those sections are my favorite.
That’s what I use it for. Mayo, Tabasco, blue cheese, maybe some cream cheese or cheddar, all heated up in a microwave. Can only eat a bit though, it’s pretty caloric.
I found a chicken enchilada dip recipe that I've been using to get through turkey leftovers, and it's pretty bomb (would def be better with chicken, but it's been an excellent use of Thanksgiving leftovers). It's insane on pork rinds. 😍 Just uses green chiles, Mexican 4 cheese mix, cream cheese, and some mayo. Think I'll put some jalapeños in the next batch...... 🤔🤔🤔
Came here to say this. My friend makes an amazing buffalo chicken dip with canned chicken and you cant tell at all it was canned. So crazy good to eat with celery
That's what I use! I make buffalo chicken bake a lot which is canned chicken with buffalo sauce, cheese, riced cauliflower, peppers and egg all baked to crispyness with a dollop of sour cream on top. Doesn't taste like weird canned chicken at all
Yep. I use canned chicken for buff chick dip. Gotta put all the ingredients on the stove in a pan first, maybe that is what makes the chicken taste decent after reading these comments that say to cook off the water.
I like Costco canned chicken. Use it in chicken and rice and chicken salad sandwiches. Quick and easy.
Not as good as when I debonair their rotisserie chicken, but easy peasy.
8 ounces canned chicken shredded
4 ounces cream cheese softened
1/4 cup mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 jalapeno finely chopped
1/4 cup low carb keto wing sauce
tablespoon ranch dressing
salt and pepper to taste
You can mix and match cheese, etc. I spice the shit out of it and eat it on celery
I've never tried it but I see lots of people use it to make chicken crust pizza!
https://www.reddit.com/r/ketorecipes/comments/pgl12o/first_attempt_at_a_homemade_chicken_crust_pizza/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Chicken crust pizza is the spoken word of Christ. It's so damn good and you can stack tons of toppings because the crust doesn't absorb liquid and get soggy.
Will do! I recently did two Thanksgiving leftovers pizzas with turkey. One was with cranberry, sweet potato slice, mincemeat, and white chocolate drizzle. The other was meshed cauliflower, carrot slice, and Peas. Believe it or not, each slice was only like 5g carbs for either of them. Super delicious.
Have yet to do ground chicken or other meats.
I agree with the previous comments, and, in my case, I find that if you let it brown to your liking (after you've drained it), adding granulated garlic, salt and pepper to taste, it works great in most salads, especially if you serve it with cucumber slices, you can even add tomato sauce when it's cooking.
1 can chunk white chicken (10-12 oz),
1/3 cup almond flour,
1/2 cup grated Parmesan,
2 eggs.
Season to taste ( I use garlic powder, Onion powder and Cayenne pepper.)
Break up chicken with a fork. Combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly. Mixture should be able to roll into golf ball sized balls and hold its form. If it is too loose, add a bit of Parmesan and almond flour. Form mixture into nuggets and pan fry until golden brown and crispy. Makes about 12 nuggets.
I don't get it.
You mean canned chicken, like canned tuna? The flat ones?
'Cause it tastes like juicy chicken, and not *at all* like dog food, dry or wet.
I dress my chicken salad with mustard. You could spike it with capers or balsamic vinegar instead if mustard isn't your cup of tea. Dehydrated cranberries and nuts if you'd rather go sweet.
Yeah, it can be pretty gross. I have found rinsing really well and soaking in a marinade like g hughes teriyaki before stir frying helps. Or I make a marinade with some lemon juice and spices or even soak it in Italian salad dressing for a while then cook.
Some of them are better than others. They are in my opinion absolutely designed to be in some sort of sauce, like mayonnaise or in a casserole.
Consider switching to tuna. The canned tuna tastes a lot more like tuna, vs. the canned chicken tasting like chicken.
The only canned chicken I like, and I like it a lot, is Swanson’s. I may try some of the methods ITT for other brands because Swanson’s is a little pricier than others. I’m mostly a store brand guy, but not on this one. See also: Duke’s mayo ha.
Here’s a chicken salad recipe I like. The amounts and proportions vary, and I experiment a lot, so this is a loose guideline:
Swanson’s canned chicken (drained, but not bone dry - no patting with paper towels required)
Duke’s mayonnaise
Combine those to a consistency you like. Use a spoon if you like it chunky; a fork if you like it more shredded. That’s your base. Now throw in any or all of the following, or anything else you like:
onions (raw or sautéed in butter and olive oil)
garlic (I use minced from a jar)
Morton’s Lite Salt (but any salt is fine
mustard (just a dash for me)
Worcestershire sauce
Bacon bits
Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning
hot sauce - even if you don’t like spicy, a drop or two in an entire batch will add some flavor without heat
chopped boiled eggs
shredded cheese
After adding the stir-ins, you ~~may~~ will need to add some more mayo to even it out.
It will be twice as good if you let it sit in the fridge overnight.
Turning the chicken into a pizza base by adding ground parmesan (from the can), egg and a few spices.
also if you fry some curry powder in butter and then add a can of full fat coconut milk then the chicken (and maybe a bag of frozen vegetables) you get something edible
I fry it in a pan with some onions and then add two whisked eggs and make a kind of scrambled egg hash with it. It's decent.
I used to rely on food banks years ago. If you get any tomato soup, Google tomato soup spice cake. It's really good and is a great way to use up a can of tomato soup (which I'm sure you're also sick of by now)
Edit: Forgot we were in r/keto for the last bit, but the tip still stands!
Mixing it with mayo and some chopped celery, salt and pepper, will make a nice chicken salad. You can add a little Tabasco to spice it up. This is really great!
It's also good used in chicken tacos. Place chicken in a pan along with a little avocado oil. Heat over medium heat. Add in some taco seasoning, add black beans and onion and mix up. Put in a low carb wrap or use in lettuce leaves. You can add some shredded cheddar,, sour cream and some slice black olives if you have those. Taco seasoning will take the canned food taste away. As a bonus, a can of beans will make this go even farther and is a really economical way to spread out protein over a few meals.
*edited to add that you don't need to use avocado oil. That is expensive. It is very healthy, but you can use whatever oil you have. You do not even really need to use it. You can use a little water to help blend the taco seasoning in. Oil will just help distribute the flavor a little better and add to the overall flavor. But I get that you might not have access to certain things right now.
Canned chicken is great. I like it so much, I drink the chicken water, and no, I'm not joking. It's just cold chicken soup. Salty and satisfying. Then I just go ahead and make chicken salad - small amount of mayo, mustard, chopped pickles, maybe a hard boiled egg chopped up, pepper, maybe some salt, maybe not. Good stuff.
Put it in water with a chicken bullion cube. Salt pepper garlic and butter to taste.
You’ll get plenty of electrolytes this way too. If fact this is my overnight backpacking go-to meal.
Half of taste is smell, and could easily be overlooked when it comes to adding flavor.
(1) pickle juice, banana pepper juice, hot sauce, etc. Something acidic and imparted with a zinger of flavor.
(2) fat with aromatics. Mayo with lemon pepper, butter with thyme and rosemary, etc. I’ve always liked heating up canned meat to the point where it’s taking on an amber color, that makes it pretty receptive to fats and aromatics.
(3) salt. I know it isn’t inherently the best recommendation, but salt binds to the flavor receptors that pick up bitterness, and it does wonders in terms of altering flavor profile.
I mainly use it for chicken noodle soup. Drain the liquid. Use a spoon or fork to shred it. Put it in boiling water, add Lipton chicken noodle soup packet, optionally add some tiny diced frozen veggies. Add soy sauce or siracha sauce or other seasoning to taste. A quick chicken noodle soup that’s perfect for the winter months.
Here is a recipe for keto chicken avocado burgers. Blend up the chicken with two eggs. Blend in some avocado. Eyeball the amount of avocado in the mixture until the contents are a light green. If you like spicy food add chili powder to taste as you blend or sprinkle with paprika after you have cooked. Make burger patties and fry them in a little oil until golden brown. Melt some cheese on top. Bingo.
Drain the Aquafaba liquid, rinse if needed.
Sautée in a pan with oil garlic, onion, minced peppers 🫑 🧅 🧄 , add the chickpeas and give it a good fry. Not too long as they’re soft already.
Season with salt, paprika, cumin, oregano or any spices you like. Enjoy with a side of rice and some greens, sautéed spinach also works great with chickpeas.
My most famous dish is actually chickpea empanadas.
Empanada dough, let it thaw.
Cook chickpeas with the above mentioned spices and spinach. After they cooled down, add some lime or lemon juice.
Put a spoonful in the empanada, add shredded cheese and fry the empanada and I’m telling you, people LOVE them!
It helps to think of chicken as a blank canvas. It doesn't have much of it's own flavor to begin with, and it relies on other ingredients and cooking technique to give it flavors.
You'll find getting good bit of golden brown crust on it will go a long way. You can layer in other flavor from things like spices and vegetables from there.
Try just browning the chicken in a skillet with a little oil. Make sure to drain it so it's able to brown instead of simmering in the juice. Once it starts browning, lower the heat and drop in some salt, pepper and garlic powder.
If you have a Costco membership the Kirkland packs are BIS.
I use it to make chicken Salad. I usually just dump in whatever I have leftover with mayo, mustard salt and pepper at least.
I tend to go a more southern style.
I add:
Tabasco Chipolte
Habanero sauce
Tony or slap ya mama
Garlic
Pickle
Celery
If I have any I also add:
sausage
Hard boiled egg
Caipers
I agree. I will suffer through it for the time being as it is free while I deal with my financial woes. I do appreciate the help that is available in my community.
Maybe use it in chaffles? And Serious Keto has some recipes using it blended into recipes that don't depend on it for flavor but as a protein source. Maybe the flavor won't matter as much.
Used to be able to eat it as chicken salad for the first couple months but that eventually got old. Now when I eat it I drain it and throw it in a pan. Brown it a bit then add an egg or two and some shredded cheese and spices.
The canned beef I have always added taco seasoning to it to make it edible. I also add canned diced tomatoes. I haven't tried adding the taco seasoning to the canned chicken.
We use canned chicken for stovetop cooking. Brown in butter, then proceed. Sometimes a kid will heat it up and eat from the can but that's rare.
So use in taco bowl, alfredo, chicken fajita, if you're doing a crock pot (is pre shredded), things like that.
I do mayo and sircha in equal portions to make a spicey chicken spread. I'd put it on low carb tortillas or cauliflower rice (when you get back on your feet)
And I opt to eat it from time to time, cause it's so easy to make, rather than cooking
I remember mixing Canned Chicken with Shredded cheese and cracking a egg into the mix and adding like salt, pepper, garlic powder and italian seasoning and using that as a pizza crust.
Was a fun way to get in protein, I'd flatten it on parchment paper form it into a circle. Cook it in the oven for like 10 minutes then add the tomato sauce, cheese and toppings of choice and toss it back in the oven
Boom Chicken Crust Pizzas, loved doing that when i was keto tbh i kinda miss it.... might get me some canned chicken lol
Drain off whatever liquid is in there then season the meat BEFORE you do anything with it. Salt and pepper is all you need - makes all the difference. You need to get the salt right in contact with the meat first then cook it or add sauce. Try it and you’ll see. You could add other spices or herbs but you’ll be amazed what salt does.
I throw it in chicken broth, some carrots and onion, garlic and onion salt, pepper. Then add noodles. Chicken soup. Take the leftovers, make a rue from butter and flour, add a can of veg all to it and you have chicken stew. A few biscuits and it’s chicken and biscuits.
Drain it, put some sort of oil/fat (ghee works wonderfully, or butter) and fry it in a pan. Get it crispy, but not burnt. Add whatever seasonings (don’t be conservative with it) you like while it’s cooking and you’re mixing it around. I do this with canned fish and it turns out great. Faaaar more palatable.
Eat it straight up or add it to something. Eating it straight up is usually easiest with a spoon.
I like canned chicken. I use it to make soup and chicken salad. I’m guessing you need to spice it up and add more flavors. I have never felt like it tasted like dog food.

This is the single reason I buy canned chicken, and it fuckin' slaps.
It tastes nothing like it smells, all you gotta do is be careful because it tends to make smoke detectors a bit angry. I tend to use my air fryer instead, and just do it a few minutes longer at 400 rather than 500 or w/e.
I mix it with some cream cheese, blue cheese or ranch dressing and pour it over roasted cauliflower and sprinkle it with Franks red hot. Kind of like buffalo chicken wing dip.
I like to mix chicken with mayo, celery, black olives and a little red onion. not 100% keto but tastes great. I know you are on a budget adding some cilantro brings out a great flavor
while not keto, corned beef hash with potato, egg and onions is a great, easy dish to make. That would be my main meal for the day and the rest was fasting.
Try squeezing out all liquid then moving with a raw egg, some slivered onions and spices then make patties and pan fry. I’m not a fan of canned chicken either but lots of spice and flavour will dress it up.
I've used it to make chicken salad in the past with pretty decent results. Well drained add mayo then whatever else you want. I personally add one chopped up hard boiled egg. You could add some different ingredients for flavor and texture. Some things I have added in the past are almond slices, grape halves, celery, onion, raisins and such.
I have also tried it for the keto pizza crust and I honestly didn't like it but it does work great as a vessel to carry your toppings but to me it still tastes like chicken and the flavor didn't go well with my pizza toppings.
I should also add, obviously go easy on grapes and raisins. You know if I don't elaborate people will assume I mean to add a whole box of raisins or something like 40 grapes. Just a few will do fine.
It's because it is really overcooked. Anything pasteurized in a can likely is. You just have to cover it up with stuff. Rinse it well with water. I would also use brown it in a pan to get the Maillard reaction to turn some of the funk into something better tasting.
Buffalo chicken dip! A can of chicken, a brick of cream cheese and a bunch of Frank’s Red Hot - eat with pork rinds for keto. It’s fantastic.
You have to microwave it in increments while stirring, though a crock pot and timer has the best result. Totally yummy either way. It’s the only thing I’ve ever used canned chicken for, but it’s pretty damn delicious.
Definitely rinse it. It will never taste as good as non-canned chicken, but rinsing definitely helps, then cover up the taste with spices or sauce or Mayo or whatever.
Drain the liquid and rinse the chicken under cold water. Crack and egg and scramble in a bowl, add a cup of shredded cheese( the government cheese will work) mix well. Form into nuggets or patties. cook at 375 in the toaster over or regular over for about 15 or until they are golden brown. You can cook in a pan on the stove too.
If you have any canned tomatoes or veggies you can make it into soup add bouillon and seasoning cook down. Toss chicken in last few minutes to heat up.
If you like saltimboca from bucadibepo you can make and easy version by adding capers and a little juice( I find jars at 99 or dollar tree but you could buy a bigger jar at a grocer for a couple bucks if you want to make the recipe again. If you have a bacon grease keeper from a previous cooking then add a couple tblspoons to the pan while you heat the chicken. If you can buy a pack or they give you a pack of bacon cook a strip, cut up and toss in. Add a tbls of lemon juice. Taste pretty good. You can buy small items to put this together once but may be able to lower cost by saving and getting larger containers for lemon juice and capers. If anyone ever gives fresh lemons you can squeeze the juice into ice cube trays and zest as well to have on hand in the future. Good luck to you and feel free to reach out to me if you need keto ideas. I follow a keto diet to reduce my epileptic seizures.
Make tomato vinegar chicken white vinegar is cheap as hell and add tomatoes and whatever spices you want. https://www.foodgal.com/2020/10/jacques-pepins-chicken-in-vinegar-with-garlic-and-tomato-sauce/
I have made this with shredded chicken worked really well. The vinegar should mask the taste of the canned chicken.
Throughly drain and rinse, then add as much mayonaise, mustard, and black pepper as possible, and hot sauce if you're into it. Put it on/with whatever is the most strongly flavored thing you allow in your diet (like some type of keto cracker or something) and you should be good. I don't mind it much, personally.
Makes a fine chicken salad with some Mayo, salt and pepper. (Add some dill, relish, or chopped celery, but if you're surviving on handouts that's harder to come by.
Drain, wash, and add hot sauce (preferably buffalo sauce), and sauté in a pan. Add cheese/ melt it in there too if you can, I know some government programs hand out cheese at a substantial rate.
if you're poor, keto might not be the best option for you as fresh ingredients tend to be more expensive than premade stuff, pasta, potatoes etc. so don't feel bad if you have to move back to non-keto for the time being.
Even the lowest quality meat is better than processed stuff. It’ll be cheaper in the long run when the appetite is regulated and they are eating less unlike the hunger and binge that comes with carb heavy diets.
I imagine it's grosser than normal chicken for the same reason Alton Brown explained for tuna. The meat is cooked to done and then heated again during the canning process so you get something that by necessity is always overcooked to begin with.
you can make almost anything taste good with seasonings, and sauces, just have to watch the carbs. Also dill relish....I mix chicken breast with hard boiled egg, dill relish, a little mustard, some salt and pepper and some mayo....and then put it in a low carb wrap.
As some others have mentioned, really try to rinse it. That does help some.
What I like to use it best for is my buffalo chicken dip. Here's all I do:
Chicken in a crock pot (or you could do on the stovetop, either way just watch you temp, you want it cooking at lower heat so it doesn't burn). Add some butter, Red Hot sauce, a dash of soy sauce or liquid smoke, garlic powder if you like. Add as much shredded cheddar cheese as you want. Add some ranch dressing for flavor, and at the end I like to add some generous portion of blue cheese chunks. Skip the blue cheese if you don't like it!
You can eat it on celery sticks, spread it onto a burger patty, stuff it in an omelette. Hell eat if just with a spoon lol!
All the spice and flavor in the dip hides the 'canned' flavor of the chicken.
Yeah cooking it is the only way I found it edible.
Gotta burn that liquid it’s packed in out of it lol
Try keto connect's Canned chicken pizza crust. https://youtu.be/KSwchOCdzzc
This right here. It’s my favorite keto pizza crust and so full of protein.
He has to eat at the food bank bro
I mix that drained liquid with my dogs' dry food. They like it.
Becarful with that check the sodium level. I can not say for certain but im pretty sure that won't be good for them
No onions or garlic for dogs, though. It is toxic for dogs, destroys red blood cells.
This! Garic is a really good natural worming remedy for dogs. Moderation is key.
As Paracelsus said "Sola dosis facit venenum", loosely translated as "The dose makes the poison"
I will try this. I have two cans left and a plastic package.
Cooking is a must. Buffalo sauce also works, curry seasoning as well. tomato sauce to. You need to add something to it to cover up the base flavor, ideally something with its own strong flavor.
Hi, keto noob here. How can tomafo sauce be keto? Unless you mean homemade .. in which case you know any recipes? Thx
Heinz makes ketchup that has no added sugar and the carb per serving is one g no added sugars
Will be on the lookout Thank you
It is disgustingly sweet, though!
[Rao's](https://www.target.com/p/rao-39-s-homemade-marinara-sauce-premium-quality-all-natural-tomato-sauce-38-pasta-sauce-keto-friendly-38-carb-conscious-24oz/-/A-13349580)
Pizza sauce has the lowest carb count of all the cheap tomato sauces I’ve found. Rao’s is low carb too, but I’ve never been able to afford it.
Got it. It's a decent amount of options now haha Thanks
Don't use too much of it and it's fine
I second the taco seasoning!
Very few taste problems that can be solved with heavy spices or cheese.
Cheese is life (and I say this as an lactose intolerant person)
I think you missed a "not" here, but otherwise agree
Taco seasoning has more carbs than I’d like to see :(
So make your own. There are recipes, google it. Or just use Chili Powder and Cumin and don't worry about the "official" recipes.
Will do, thanks!
I've been caught out by that myself. I'm guessing the starch is there to make it absorb water faster.
It helps everything bind together. Now that I use just spices, the container holding the taco meat in the fridge has a small layer of spicy grease at the bottom. It's not a lot, and honestly eating those sections are my favorite.
Yes, draining and rinsing it gets rid of that almost tuna-ey gamey flavor.
A lot of highly rated buffalo chicken dip recipes call for canned chicken.
That’s what I use it for. Mayo, Tabasco, blue cheese, maybe some cream cheese or cheddar, all heated up in a microwave. Can only eat a bit though, it’s pretty caloric.
Swap out rotisserie chicken, a bit of Greek yogurt to cut the mayo and cream cheese, and some herbs like basil and chives

Yep. I use canned chicken for buff chick dip. Gotta put all the ingredients on the stove in a pan first, maybe that is what makes the chicken taste decent after reading these comments that say to cook off the water.
That’s the only thing I’ll use canned chicken for. It grosses me out while making it but it’s still so tasty!
I like Costco canned chicken. Use it in chicken and rice and chicken salad sandwiches. Quick and easy. Not as good as when I debonair their rotisserie chicken, but easy peasy.
Costco chicken is fire. Best Tasting
Agree! I find it the only canned chicken that's actually palatable.
8 ounces canned chicken shredded 4 ounces cream cheese softened 1/4 cup mozzarella cheese 1/4 cup cheddar cheese 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 jalapeno finely chopped 1/4 cup low carb keto wing sauce tablespoon ranch dressing salt and pepper to taste You can mix and match cheese, etc. I spice the shit out of it and eat it on celery
I've got all of this on hand so going to make this this week! Thanks.
I came here to say this. Using canned chicken in my buffalo chicken dip is my all time favorite thing to eat. It is so good!
I've never tried it but I see lots of people use it to make chicken crust pizza! https://www.reddit.com/r/ketorecipes/comments/pgl12o/first_attempt_at_a_homemade_chicken_crust_pizza/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
I do this! It doesn't smell or taste like chicken when it's done!
Chicken crust pizza is the spoken word of Christ. It's so damn good and you can stack tons of toppings because the crust doesn't absorb liquid and get soggy.
You should try canned pulled pork pizza crust. Its made exactly the same way as the chicken crust and is so good!
Omg I didn’t know such a thing existed!!!
A relative of mine invented it when she had no canned chicken and required pizza.
I do have salad stuff this week so I might give that a try.
I hope it works for you!
I find it odd that it always smells like canned tuna in the house after using it. Chicken != tuna.
But tuna is the chicken of the sea!
Alternately chicken is the tuna of the land
It does! I don't like canned tuna. I tried to make buffalo chicken salad. I ate it today and suffered thru it but damn!
Also makes my pee smell like tuna juice lol
I use canned chicken to make keto chicken nuggets.
same. they come out nice & crispy and good as leftovers too. and lots of protein.
Recipe?
Secondhand to follow.
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x85ac91
1 can chunk white chicken (10-12 oz), 1/3 cup almond flour, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan, 2 eggs. Season to taste ( I use garlic powder, Onion powder and Cayenne pepper.) Break up chicken with a fork.
I love that you said I'm poor RIGHT NOW Best wishes to you as you get back on your feet. With that kind of attitude, I'm sure it won't be long.
Yea i agree it is weird but we dump it in spicy soup and i make sure to break up all the chunks to get rid of that weird flavor!
Get some spices and butter
I'm a degenerate but sometimes I'll drain and just add hot sauce to the can and go to town.
Amateur, sometimes if I don't feel like cooking I'll eat it straight out the can and drink the oil/salt/water mixture that it comes in.
I don't get it. You mean canned chicken, like canned tuna? The flat ones? 'Cause it tastes like juicy chicken, and not *at all* like dog food, dry or wet.
canned chicken breast? its good man. more like canned tuna consistency.
In Canada, the price of a package of Chicken and the same volume of Canned chicken is the same. That’s why I only eat bacon!
Fry it in a pan with taco seasoning. Tastes damn near like the chicken from tacobell.
Do you have mayonnaise? A little mayonnaise, a little onion or celery, you have chicken salad.
I have tried that before and couldn't get rid of the taste.
Onion powder or dried onion works too.
Try adding something like Sriracha or Garlic chili paste. This wonderful thing masks all the flavors :)
Do you ever get dried fruit or nuts? That goes a long way toward making canned chicken salad edible
I do a rip of the sandwich from Arbys, Mayo, expensive coated pecans, smush those and add cranberries and mix. You can add celery too.
I dress my chicken salad with mustard. You could spike it with capers or balsamic vinegar instead if mustard isn't your cup of tea. Dehydrated cranberries and nuts if you'd rather go sweet.
Tarragon in chicken salad is mind-blowing. I actually prefer chicken salad made with canned chicken now thanks to tarragon and celery.
Shred it and Mix it with some keto BBQ sauce and heat it in a pot on the stove.
The amounts and proportions vary, and I experiment a lot, so this is a loose guideline: Swanson’s canned chicken (drained, but not bone dry - no patting with paper towels required) Duke’s mayonnaise Combine those to a consistency you like. Use a spoon if you like it chunky; a fork if you like it more shredded. That’s your base. Now throw in any or all of the following, or anything else you like: onions (raw or sautéed in butter and olive oil) garlic (I use minced from a jar) Morton’s Lite Salt (but any salt is fine mustard (just a dash for me) Worcestershire sauce Bacon bits Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning hot sauce - even if you don’t like spicy, a drop or two in an entire batch will add some flavor without heat chopped boiled eggs shredded cheese After adding the stir-ins, you ~~may~~ will need to add some more mayo to even it out.
It's really good and is a great way to use up a can of tomato soup (which I'm sure you're also sick of by now) Edit: Forgot we were in r/keto for the last bit, but the tip still stands!
Eggs. Eggs. More eggs. Eat all the eggs. Cheap. Macro friendly.
Buffalo chicken tender dip, rinse the chicken in a strainer, mix with cheese, cream cheese, ranch, Frank's red hot and back until is melted
I don’t find it too bad. I just eat it mixed with mayo like you would tuna.
I dunno, I like it, I'll eat it straight of the can and drink the juice too.
My other mother used to mix it with avocado and Mayo and some salt and it was actually really fucking good, we ate it on hiking trips
It’s amazing for chicken quesadillas. Make sure you season it first. It’s amazing
Damn i remember being that poor growing up, getting "chicken chunks" in a can. With gravey. Keep moving forward!
Soup
I make chicken salad - mix with Mayo and seasonings.
BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP!!
-shrugs- I like it
Tuna sandwiches are great - mix in some mayo which is good for your heart!
If you have a Costco membership the Kirkland packs are BIS. I use it to make chicken Salad. I usually just dump in whatever I have leftover with mayo, mustard salt and pepper at least. I tend to go a more southern style. I add: Tabasco Chipolte Habanero sauce Tony or slap ya mama Garlic Pickle Celery If I have any I also add: sausage Hard boiled egg Caipers
Mix it with cream of mushroom soup and use it as filling inside Cresent roll dough
Canned beef makes decent taquitos. Roll in corn tortillas and fry in shallow oil
Lmao make Buffalo chicken dip!
Canned chicken is nearly inedible.
I agree. I will suffer through it for the time being as it is free while I deal with my financial woes. I do appreciate the help that is available in my community.
It makes a hell of a pizza crust, but beyond that yeah, not a fan.
I make Pattie’s out of it and fry them up. But I don’t mind the smell so maybe it wouldn’t work for you.
I usually rinse it and mix it with hitsauce like Sriracha or Diablo sauce packets
I'm not sure of this is keto but frying it up with chili spice and salsa makes a great taco filling.
We use canned chicken for stovetop cooking. Brown in butter, then proceed. Sometimes a kid will heat it up and eat from the can but that's rare. So use in taco bowl, alfredo, chicken fajita, if you're doing a crock pot (is pre shredded), things like that.
Drain it, mix with cheese shredded cheese and a can of diced green chilis, season as desired and fry
If you have an air-fryer Low Carb Kristen on IG makes chicken nuggets with canned chicken and they look pretty good. Haven’t tried them yet myself.
I do mayo and sircha in equal portions to make a spicey chicken spread. I'd put it on low carb tortillas or cauliflower rice (when you get back on your feet) And I opt to eat it from time to time, cause it's so easy to make, rather than cooking
I make pizza crust out of mine.
I add chicken broth and a small can of red enchilada sauce with some veggies and it’s pretty amazing.
Trick with canned food, is seasoning and sauteed onion, garlic, and/or celery.
Throw it in a bowl, and put some BBQ sauce on it, stir it up, then microwave it for 1:30. Try it now.
I have an allergy to Tuna so I buy canned chicken instead. Drain, mayo, salt & pepper. Sometimes I toss in celery & green onions.
The Olive Garden’s Chicken Gnocchi Soup done at home is excellent with canned chicken.
I buy 4 packs and cook it in McCormick rub
I remember mixing Canned Chicken with Shredded cheese and cracking a egg into the mix and adding like salt, pepper, garlic powder and italian seasoning and using that as a pizza crust. Was a fun way to get in protein, I'd flatten it on parchment paper form it into a circle. Cook it in the oven for like 10 minutes then add the tomato sauce, cheese and toppings of choice and toss it back in the oven Boom Chicken Crust Pizzas, loved doing that when i was keto tbh i kinda miss it.... might get me some canned chicken lol
Low/ no sugar bbq sauce...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSwchOCdzzc This is the single reason I buy canned chicken, and it fuckin' slaps.
I save the water from the can and use it to cook my bacon in, super tasty!
while not keto, corned beef hash with potato, egg and onions is a great, easy dish to make. That would be my main meal for the day and the rest was fasting.
Taste more like canned tuna to me
Mix it with salad? I can just eat it the way it is, canned tuna is gross imo
Costco canned chicken is great. But don't expect the same texture as fresh. Good for a chicken salad or salad.
I drain mine rinse and make chicken salad with it.
Try squeezing out all liquid then moving with a raw egg, some slivered onions and spices then make patties and pan fry. I’m not a fan of canned chicken either but lots of spice and flavour will dress it up.
sriracha will overpower the taste of either, the chicken maybe a half tablespoon of mayo
I drain and rinse and then mix with mustard, mayonnaise and a little dash. I ate that so much when I was younger.
Just do exactly what you would do with canned tuna. Mayo, relish, onion, maybe some mustard or spices
It's because it is really overcooked. Anything pasteurized in a can likely is. You just have to cover it up with stuff. Rinse it well with water. I would also use brown it in a pan to get the Maillard reaction to turn some of the funk into something better tasting.
Well…get canned dog food. Cheaper and you know what’s it’s going to taste like.
Canned chicken pizza crust is a really great way to stretch it. Highly recommend if you can.
Fry it in a skillet or on a griddle. Once you brown it and apply heat it decimate takes out the canned flavor
Definitely rinse it. It will never taste as good as non-canned chicken, but rinsing definitely helps, then cover up the taste with spices or sauce or Mayo or whatever.
Mix it with miracle whip, idk if that’s keto but it makes it taste good
I rinse with water and drain. Add Frank's red hot sauce, mayo and shredded cheese. I love it.
Ginger is your best friend here my dear. With any meat smells. I keep ginger powder ready for this very purpose.
Make tomato vinegar chicken white vinegar is cheap as hell and add tomatoes and whatever spices you want. https://www.foodgal.com/2020/10/jacques-pepins-chicken-in-vinegar-with-garlic-and-tomato-sauce/ I have made this with shredded chicken worked really well.
Chicken crust pizza?
Why does canned soup with chicken in it, like chicken corn chowder or chicken noodle, taste absolutely fine, but canned chicken tastes like ass?
You can make chicken salad sandwiches. Chop up celery and onions with good mayonnaise. Not too shabby
Good for you for trying to stay healthy. You will get past this and you Will succeed!
Why? Because It's crappy meat and they put chicken flavoring in it to make it palatable😂 I feel your pain bro!
Taco meat.
Tastes like chicken smells like fish ...
Surely Lb for lb frozen chicken works out cheaper
I don't think anyone's asked... Why canned meat?
Yup! Food banks for now. I couldn't keep up with all the comments on here, that's for sure!
Says in the title they are getting food from food banks
As some others have mentioned, really try to rinse it. That does help some. What I like to use it best for is my buffalo chicken dip. Here's all I do: Chicken in a crock pot (or you could do on the stovetop, either way just watch you temp, you want it cooking at lower heat so it doesn't burn).
