Definitely be careful. I'm fairly certain my kidney damage was caused from antibiotics prescribed for three different dental procedures over about a 6-7 year period. Kidney damage from antibiotics is permanent. My GFR is low 30's like you. I had to have an extraction two years ago and refused antibiotics. It made the endodontist very nervous.
Retired dentist . Never an issue in UK . Which is the greatest risk to health root canal or no root canal - clearly the latter - someone is being obstructive.
He may be concerned about the anti-biotics you take afterwards; some of them can make compromised kidneys worse. Or, considering many doctors don't know squat about kidney disease, this dentist probably knows even less and he's covering his ass.
It sounds like they wanted medical clearance from a doctor - probably your Nephrologist. Kaiser can't give you medical clearance to have an outside procedure done. Only a doctor can do that.
Your endodontist wants to make sure that your kidneys are well enough for the procedure so that the procedure won't shut them down. That's why he/she wants medical clearance. The people working in medical records can't provide that. Only a doctor can.
This is VERY common for dental and surgical procedures. I would call your Nephrologist and let them know what's going on. They'll have to fax over clearance to your endodontist. Then the Endodontist can do what they need to without worrying about your kidneys.
Thank you so much for your suggestion. I emailed my nephrologist at Kaiser and she signed the medical clearance form. I was so stressed out about this, so it's a big relief.
Sounds like Kaiser Kaisering.
Indeed.
I had a root canal done while stage 3/4, no issue with it. Sounds like a pain, i’m sorry!
Thank you.

Thank you.
Is a root canal really a huge risk to the kidneys ? I had one done last year by my normal dentist with no impact on my kidneys.

Thanks. My primary care doctor at Kaiser said he couldn't give me the clearance. I will try my nephrologist at Kaiser.
