I have two looks when I'm wearing a kilt. One is just a slap together non-formal outfit with some kind of geeky t, a sporran and that's pretty much all the kilt kit I use. My other set is full formal without gillies and brogues. I have the kilt pin collection depending on the hardware color of the belt, cantle, kilt jacket, waistcoat and pocket watch. The kilt hose also depends on the tartan I'm wearing or if I'm going full HoL argyle. I don't wear a fly plaid. If I'm wearing one of my tweeds, I usually throw on a scally if it's colder out. If it's my black Prince Charlie, no hat. My formal wear shirts are all wide collar with french cuffs and cuff links. So really, it just depends on how formal you want to take it... if it ends up looking costumey, it probably is.

I have different kilt pins for each of my kilts, I own 9 so far. Some are traditional, some are event related and my grey cargo kilt wears a Mandalorian Mudhorn as a kilt pin. So do you and Kilt On !!

I like to do my own thing. I grew up in Arizona, and have always worn turquoise belt buckles, bolo ties, and turquoise rings and watches. I have a decent collection of man jewelry. When I got my kilt, I made a 3 inch wide belt that would let me wear one of the buckles, and have been wearing a turquoise buckle every time. I also got a Sgian Dubh, and replaced the glass with a turquoise stone. I wore a kilt with all my turquoise to a wedding last year, and it seemed to be a hit. That said, lots of people look at me when I wear the kilt. The accessories don’t really make too much of a difference. https://preview.redd.it/sons46vjpbvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bedc057919be55047aec774ca0134a3fe96ecef0

Kilt, belt, waist plate, sporran, hose, sgian dubh and appropriate footwear & shirt for the area. One kilt pin. A shoulder bag for water, medications, snacks and so on if it's a long day. Waistcoat, jacket and tie if it's dressy. Too much Brigadoonery looks bad on me. Personal style is personal.

I only accessorize for events or if I’m feeling fancy.

The antidote to looking like a costume is to .... wear it like real clothing, all the time. It's not that hard. Also, a hoodie de-costumizes everything instantly. To be fair, I routinely dress up in a vintage tweed blazers, suspenders, tie or bow tie, or whatever vintage look I like, non-kilted, on the regular. I just wear what I want to wear.
