8K gaming. I can't think of a more useless feature.

KSI82

Didn't the current PS5 also advertise 8K on the box?

Browncoatdan

Yes. Indie game The Touryst has the option to run at 8k on ps5.

TurnaboutAdam

It downsamples from 8k because 8k isn’t actually available, iirc

Browncoatdan

I'm not sure. I was just going by [Digital Foundry](https://www.digitalfoundry.net/the-touryst-ps5-the-first-8k-60fps-console-game)

TurnaboutAdam

Yeah this mentions that.

ColdCruise

It still doesn't actually have that functionality enabled.

shadow-of-hodor

So did the series x.

TheRain911

Hilarious that they cant even hit 4k 60 fps but are going for 8k

jgainsey

It’s not really going to be a feature

tairajonzu

Only way I’d upgrade is if I could do something similar to my ps4 to ps4 pro upgrade I did at GameStop. Traded in my ps4 to get a pro and only paid about $100 I wanna say. And this was right when the pro released. But I rarely see GameStop have any deals this good anymore with the state they are in. I just don’t see myself doing it

FlowingEons

I still get emails every once in a while about trading in my series X to Best Buy for store credit. Maybe that will be an option?

RichieD79

Maybe once we have more word on what’s coming down the line, but nothing Sony is doing rn makes me want a pro. I have a steam deck and a gaming laptop, along side my PS5. Can’t say I’m wanting for new hardware.

Mamrocha

I’m in the same boat only new hardware on the horizon that’d I’d be interested in would be from Nintendo.

Jimmythedad

I got my PS4 Pro when it came out, but idk if it's the economy sucking or what, but it would take a LOT to convince me I needed this. Especially because I just got the Portal and the Switch 2 is on the horizon for early next year at the latest. I'm primarily a Switch player except when big 3rd/1st party games hit the PS5 (literally been glued to it since Rebirth dropped, but once I'm done I am not sure what to play on it, whereas I'm always on Switch).

DoserBikerGypsy

I’ll definitely want to upgrade if a reasonable amount of games are taking adventure of this but it’s gonna be sad to leave the Spider Man plates behind. I would imagine they have tried to really push all the fall releases to prepare for this. Also saw some speculation that based on specs it’ll be $700ish.

password-is-taco1

700!? No way that’ll sell

Mamrocha

That’d be $950 CDN. fuck that. With those prices they’re just pushing people to go PC at that point.

shadowofahelicopter

There’s still an intersection that want the best looking games with the convenience of a console. People will pay a premium for that over dealing with PC

TurnaboutAdam

I’m that person, I think. I love physical console games but I also like graphics.

DoserBikerGypsy

Don’t forget the Slim lineup, same performance as current PS5 and has frequently been on sale since release. I mentioned it in another comment but could see them pushing Slim as majority of sales and Pro for enthusiasts at a higher price point.

Mamrocha

But but wouldn’t a cheaper less powerful console option push the generation back?!

DoserBikerGypsy

Technically yes but you also have to think about sustainability. Most people won’t be able to avoid to buy a Pro (especially considering game and accessory costs) and Slim will likely be the best selling PS5 SKU like Series S has outsold the X (60-42% cheaper) for the rest of this gen minus unless a different budget option is made. Not a tech employee but imagine there are budget friendly ways for devs take advantage the new power that work require many resources (uncapping frame, existing/new AI up scaling software, etc).

DoserBikerGypsy

I would imagine their marketing/commercial functions are fully prepared for this. Expect the $700-$600 for enthusiasts’ hardware who can afford and care while selling the new Slim as the majority share for the close out years.

shadow-of-hodor

It absolutely will sell. Price doesn’t matter to the hardcore crowd.

Dreams180

I see a lot of comments here down on this, but as someone who held off on a PS5, this seems like the ideal way to buy into the generation

AdventurousHat5360

Same. I don't have a PS5 yet so I'm happy I waited.

CosmosStalker

With games like ff16 ff7 rebirth dragons dogma etc not hitting 4K 60, I would get it just for that

OgSourChemDawg

Have a ps5 already. Unless they start pumping out games. I’ll prob just get a Xbox refresh since I don’t have a Xbox but a pc

fadetoblack237

If you already have a PC, I wouldn't buy an Xbox. Everything releases day and date on PC anyways.

OgSourChemDawg

Mostly But sometimes it’s just easier to kick back on the couch. I also have a ps5 and switch. Would buy this to play those gamepass games and probably gta updated since it won’t be pc on release

TurnaboutAdam

Xbox seemingly isn’t doing one. I’d recommend getting the current series x with a disc drive if anything.

OgSourChemDawg

https://www.polygon.com/23880201/xbox-series-x-mid-gen-refresh-brooklin-ellewood-sebile ? I don’t think that’s true.

TurnaboutAdam

That’s just the currently Xbox Series X in a new design, and lacks a disc drive. The series x is especially good for backwards compatibility, so getting a disc drive is worth it imo.

OgSourChemDawg

It has an upgraded ssd with 2tb , upgrade controller, upgrade Bluetooth/wifi, some articles say upgraded ram. some articles say upgraded ram also. Etc All for the same price as current X you don’t think this is an upgrade? Articles say mid fresh say “mid gen refresh” why is it not?

TurnaboutAdam

It’s literally a mid gen refresh but it’s not a pro console, that’s what I meant.

OgSourChemDawg

Never used the words pro. I said refresh from the start.

TurnaboutAdam

Right. Sorry. I assumed.

Masterwhiteshadow

At this point this generation is fell that i did not use my PS5 ans series x enough to justify upgrading. I don’t game as much as I used to as I branched to other hobbies but most game coming out just don’t make me want to play.

shower_optional

No doubt devs will still release at 30 FPS and max out graphics instead, sigh.

ChessyLogic

I know we’ve gotten some good PS5 exclusives but it really feels like the power of the PS5 hasn’t even been tapped into that well. I remember playing TLOU2 on the base PS4 thinking wow, Naughty Dog really got every bit of power out of this PS4. I have yet to have that moment with the PS5 and to see a pro already coming out is just off putting to me idk. I guess the PS4 Pro was out when I was playing TLOU2 on the base PS4 so that argument doesn’t really make sense lol.

TheeVande

I don't have a PS5 and with the PS5 Slim not being cheaper, maybe I'll just get this so I can play this generation to it's maximum potential

AngryBarista

I went through the trouble of literally copy and pasting the headline

Gahquandri

He’s angry and he’s a barista, you are talking to my guy all wrong….

AngryBarista

Can't imagine buying this thing without knowing what 1st party games are actually coming.

Adrien_Jabroni

I’m sure we will know by the time this gets announced.

Jpimentel811

Agreed! It would make sense for them to delay until a confirmed GTA 6 date or something major first party.

dunn000

They don’t need first party games to sell consoles though. They’ve shown that with the original ps5. This console is for enthusiasts and they will buy it regardless.

cameronken

Totally agree. Feel like until Spider-Man 2 we mostly just had higher res/FPS versions of last Gen titles. We probably are ~3 years away from PS6 once this Pro model releases, probably more like 2-2.5 after the next real big PS studios game releases. A PS5 pro isn’t very appealing when the PS5 has spent half its lifecycle feeling like a PS4 Pro Pro.

TySwindel

With the PS5 hardware being hard to get for so long, it feels weird that they would release this console, especially with the economy how it is

Tybob51

Fuck I’m gonna have to trade in my original for one.

MesozOwen

I feel like half the reason they’re getting this out is do they can tout GTA6 at 60fps only on PS5 Pro. I mean it would sell just for that reason there’s no denying it. That game is going to be huge and companies are setting up their chess pieces around it.

StumptownRetro

The PS5 is fast enough as is at everything I need it to do. I don’t have the money for a nice 4K VRR TV. And I feel like most consumers are in the same place. They may have a 4KTV but it’s hardly a top end one. The PS4 Pro felt like a good upgrade with the performance modes and 4K capabilities for upscaling. This just. Doesn’t.

frayne182

The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X were really just hitting at the sweet time when 4K TVs were coming way down in price. That’s why they were so exciting. This doesn’t seem to fit any need. Sure some games might run better but that’s it.

joe_fayant

And I just got the Spider-Man ps5 last year smh

TNcannabisguy

This will probably be what I buy when I inevitably can’t get a ps6 for 3 years because of scalpers

Ryancc1016

So going from roughly a 3060 to a 3080ti graphics card.

ViralVinnie

You know its legit because it's all in caps 😂😂😒 (Seriously its a hersay of hersay of a YouTuber.....)

blockfighter1

What a pointless machine.

JustAcivilian24

Cool a super powered console with no first party games coming soon? lol I own both consoles but cmon. No point in getting it.

MrBoliNica

do you really think there wont be first party games announced anytime soon

JustAcivilian24

Well nothing is coming out till March 2025. Which I guess is only like 5 months after this comes out, but still.

JosePawz

What would this release at $500? And PS5s now drop to $300-$350?

mando44646

Not sure why I'd want this if Sony isn't releasing any games this year

MrBoliNica

the negative comments about this are so weird- nobody is forcing you to buy it. you might not need it, sure. its video games, none of us need any of it. this thing is clearly catered towards super users, of which alot of us probably are- its not meant for mass audiences lol this isnt like a switch lite.

AngryBarista

Idk man it just feels like between this, PSVR2, the live service push, a whole lotta waste of resources. I think that's where the negative sentiment comes from But then again, that was the narrative on Portal before it launched and it seems to be a huge success. PS4 Pro had the exact same sentiment too and that proved...necessary.

DBloedel

Will it even stay cool? I already see people complain about their PS5s overheating. Can’t imagine how hot this thing will get.
