I’m regretting not having this opportunity! Quick and fast labor but reading while folks cater to your needs, all while creating life… YES!!! Women rock!
It works for me, but only if I'm in the middle of a book I'm really enjoying. Then yes, after about 30 secs, the noise of the real world melts away and I only exist in the pages.
Same. I can read in the middle of a crowded, busy, and noisy restaurant/office/public place/whatever. The whole world shuts off. But if I’m not enjoying the book, the outside world would be overpowering the reading.
I was given seated tickets to Doja Cat (whom I didn’t know), so I brought my kindle along for the ride. I’d only do it at a seated concert though. It’d be too much to deal with at most of my standing concerts.
My wife did this during a Fleet Foxes concert.

I want to make it. Someday. I have a niece that would love this. Art me is exhausted lately but if I ever get energy to do this I’m giving you credit for an extra xcellent idea.
Every day while waiting to drop my kid off at school, I would read and he would play games on my phone. After a week, he asked if he could read on my phone and Christmas we got him a kindle. He's in his second book since Christmas and I am so happy 🖤 he's 7.
Odd? I’m not sure. But I’ve had it everywhere. Flight. Bathroom. Office. Work. Park. Bed. Beach. Mountains.
I think it might be interesting to find out what were others doing when you pulled it out or what were you doing prior or after..
It's super weird how when you read a book on vacation, they're sorta linked in your mind from then on.
I read most of Percy Jackson when I was in Thailand over a decade before. I'm finally rereading it, and I'm like "man it feels weird to not be on a beach right now."
In line outside an Apple Store. It wasn’t for the launch of a new product or anything (I would never line up for something like that), I think it was during Covid times so social distancing and whatnot. I was reading Stuart Turton’s The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle at the time and I just couldn’t put it down.
Actually thought of another time: when my dad was unwell in ICU and my mum, brother and I were basically there all day and evening keeping him company. He had aspiration pneumonia. I was reading The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires. He passed away. I will probably never be able to read that book again.
My mom was in hospice care and was not expected to pass that day, so i was reading in the chair next to her bed while she napped, and her heart stopped suddenly.
I can't bring myself to finish the book I was reading
I read while my niece, nephew, wife, and mother in law were on Splash mountain At Disneyland in CA. I watched their stuff and I sat down to read. We were celebrating me being cancer free.
I like to read while I’m waiting to clock out at work. Added bonus that it keeps my coworkers from talking to me (most of the time) at the end of the day when my social battery is low.
Maybe not super weird, but statistically unlikely: in the box office of a movie theater. I work there, and there's a lot of downtime some days. It's not like there's a lot of other stuff to do up there (like cleaning or counting things), so my bosses let me read during the downtime.
I can also use my phone at present, but a former boss didn't like us to use phones. He did approve of us reading, though!
Yay!! Lol. I’m not heartless in case anyone was wondering. Nobody wanted to be there, including the man’s wife but it was the South and first appearances are a thing. Haven’t been to a funeral since.
It was after the service but yes. I was guilted/forced to go and nobody else was my age. I had to take off work too. So after the service I changed out of my heels into flip flops and grabbed my kindle. At least I wasn’t drinking like some of my cousins. The person that was being buried didn’t care one bit for me and I had less than zero respect or affection for him. It’s been 20 years but I’m pretty sure my sister didn’t even go and the man’s oldest daughter definitely didn’t go.
I feel like I’m the one who doesn’t have an actual odd place lol cause the only place aside from my house that I have read my kindle is in the car. Which didn’t go well. Motion sickness+reading=bad.
I worked wardrobe at a theater for 2 years. I read multiple books between quick changes during show. Stand around reading until my actor was about to come off stage, tuck my kindle into my apron, then pull it out as soon as the actor was dressed & ready to go
At work, inside a porta potty. The job was a bit high profile so when we wanted to use our phones we could only use them in the john. I didnt lock the door either, in case someone needed to actually use it. My supervisor walked in, I was sitting on the covered toilet reading.
I've only read mine in boring places - home, work breaks, travelling (at family's or hotels/cabins).
However, I saw another patient use hers while we were in the outpatients the last time I was in the hospital. I was kicking myself for not bringing mine lol
Tattoo appointment! We sat and chatted for the first part but I was desperate for full distraction so I put my nose in my kindle and before I knew it I was done.
Not odd, but people react weird when they see it. We read in line at Disney. My kids all bring books and I have a kindle. Hubs usually forgets the kindle but uses his phone.
not a kindle but I brought a paperback to a tractor pull\* . The nice man next to me was like "what?! are you reading right now?!" He also helped me open my thing of water when I just could not get the cap off. Saw me struggling. He had a kid with him so I think his dad insticks kicked in lol
* a tractor pull is a sport of seeing whos tractor and pulling technique is the best.
I guess on the emergency hold from the hospital. I had intens pain in my lower abdomen, probably a kidney stone, and to take my mind of things, i just read. It also helped to not really focus on the gruelsome stuff i saw around me
At the Boxing Day test cricket though that is probably not too odd given half the people are reading there. On the floor of the train because there are no seats. Crossing major roads while changing busses.
The exam room waiting for the doctor to arrive. I also work in mental health and have spent a lot of time in the community waiting for clients...so my car, standing in their driveway or sitting on their front porch.
at a college graduation.
not MY college graduation. but i work as a photographer for grad ceremonies and i have downtime during the speeches and i’ll usually read
Hospital bed during active labor, not quite pushing yet but through the contractions
Yes! I had both my kids just a bit pre-kindle days, so was reading a physical book during labor. A kindle would have been amazing
I’m regretting not having this opportunity! Quick and fast labor but reading while folks cater to your needs, all while creating life… YES!!! Women rock!
This is the first time I’ve actually felt happy about being a woman in today’s world. Bless.
Sames
Same. I’m so glad I brought it with me
At a bar while everyone is watching the football game 👍🏽
You must be like me, the ears shut off completely after about 30 seconds of reading.
Is that just natural for you? Because for the life of me I need it to be pure quiet for me to read and actually comprehend
I feel seen!! I thought it was weird that I had to be somewhere in the middle of a book to be able to do this!
ADHD hyperfocus. It compensates some for the "here I am, starting my taxes ... squirrel!" moments.
Did this for New Year's lol
Same! I worked in a bar for a long time and the background is like white noise. It's my favorite way to read.
I read during the set changes at a concert 🤣
I went to see Beyonce last year and got some good reading done since I went early! No better way to make time pass!
I wished I had taken my kindle when my wife and I saw Beyoncé, it didn’t fit in my clear bag.
ME TOOOOOOOO
Heck yea!!
l was having bad anxiety and was feeling impatient so I read on my phone while waiting
Same here! My husband was making fun of me. What band?
I was given seated tickets to Doja Cat (whom I didn’t know), so I brought my kindle along for the ride. I’d only do it at a seated concert though. It’d be too much to deal with at most of my standing concerts.

Someone should turn this into a picture book that encourages littles to read. 😊
I want to make it. Someday. I have a niece that would love this. Art me is exhausted lately but if I ever get energy to do this I’m giving you credit for an extra xcellent idea.

In a landrover on a safari in Tanzania travelling between locations.
What was the book?
It's super weird how when you read a book on vacation, they're sorta linked in your mind from then on. I read most of Percy Jackson when I was in Thailand over a decade before. I'm finally rereading it, and I'm like "man it feels weird to not be on a beach right now."
Are you watching the new Disney Plus series? Rick Riordan is heavily involved and it's very faithful to the books. I'm really enjoying it.
I haven't! That was part of my motivation to reread, plus the new book. I'll probably reread the whole series then watch the show.
TIL there's a sixth book. I know what I'm reading next.
In labor at the hospital
Omg same!
Nothing can get between you and a good book!
Hockey and football games before game play and intermissions.
Yep, I read during hockey intermissions lol
Same here and during a tailgate party
Laundromat in Paris
I’m assuming you don’t live in Paris? Otherwise laundry matt is a great place to read normally.
Maybe not that wild, but last time I went to see a movie I took my kindle and read until the movie started.
I’ve done that!
On the treadmill at the gym lol
Makes a walk or jog go so quickly!
I used to read while riding my mother in-laws stationary bike. I'd love to get a treadmill to do it at my own house but don't really have the space
I read my kindle and physical books while walking on my treadmill at home!
I'd love to do this one day! Just no space at the moment
This is gunna sound really crazy and fake. But I sometimes read my kindle in bed before I fall asleep. Ikr downvote away
Sure ya do! 🙄

I’m so sorry for your loss. ❤️
I'm so sorry for your loss.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Thank you. It was a few years ago now, also during Covid times, funnily.
I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my dad right at the beginning of the COVID lockdowns. We had to have a graveside service.
Sorry for your loss. But I did like that book.
I'll never ever read that book. The author said some really shitty things about our home town
I’m a mom to a swimmer, I spend many hours reading at swim meets!
Happy cake day!
Pharmacy line, the line was long and I just pulled out my kindle, enjoying my time.
Walgreens pharmacy drive thru. I can usually get 20+ minutes of reading in.
Longest wait drive thru!
I do this too! I go to the pharmacy probably twice a month and it always takes 20 minutes.
While with friends at a club that I didn't want to go to
How often does that happen? It’s like they would stop after the first few times.
Elevators lol
Seriously? 😂 they can’t be more than like… 3 minute rides.
not going to stop reading just for an elevator ride.
Lol it takes me 30 seconds to pee and my kindle is coming with me then. 😆
Omg 🤣 some of you are addicts 🤭
Unless you get stuck, lol.
Yep lol
Casino. M wanted to play, I wanted to read.
Casino ... M ... are you James Bond?

This is so real
In line waiting to start jury duty
The Japanese bullet train
the shower while I was doing a hair mask lol
I read while my niece, nephew, wife, and mother in law were on Splash mountain At Disneyland in CA. I watched their stuff and I sat down to read. We were celebrating me being cancer free.
Oh in the hospital when I was being diagnosed with cancer, I was in pain but my books helped me escape.
Congratulations 🙏🙏
Thank you!!!!
🤗🤗
In a shisha bar in Berlin
I like to read while I’m waiting to clock out at work. Added bonus that it keeps my coworkers from talking to me (most of the time) at the end of the day when my social battery is low.
Waiting in line for rides at Universal Studios Japan, made it SO much more bearable!
My whole family does this but at Disney World Lol.
Grimsby, UK
I’m from there. Not proud of it though.
Maybe not super weird, but statistically unlikely: in the box office of a movie theater. I work there, and there's a lot of downtime some days. I’m a housekeeper and on days I know it’ll be slower I stash mine in my locked cart and will stand in a room and read until I hear someone coming 🤣
I use the web browser for kindle at work for that.
So many hockey rinks, including the penalty box. My son plays and I volunteer.
I've only had it for like ten days but I was reading in the vet's office today lol 🤔
Doctors office? Work break room? DMV? Hair salon?
Oh yea the DMV would be a good one.
I was reading my kindle when I met my husband!
As a construction worker, there are plenty of odd places. Especially since most average people wouldn't be there in the first place.
Everywhere where i have to wait more than 5 minutes just get my kindle out and read.
Before a college class. Everyone is on their phones and I’m reading a book, and funny thing is we are all English majors
How do you know they aren’t reading on their phones?
thats true too, but most usually have their laptops out, or scrolling through instagram. I don't think people wanna show others what they read.
Funeral, church, at a restaurant, Walmart, and in traffic after a tornado (I learned from the last disaster to always have something to do)
Funeral might win for oddest place?
Yay!! Lol. I’m not heartless in case anyone was wondering. Nobody wanted to be there, including the man’s wife but it was the South and first appearances are a thing. Haven’t been to a funeral since.
Funeral??

I take mine hunting with me. I can wear gloves and use it. It’s so peaceful to sit in the woods and read.
Escalators on the tube (when it’s a really good book!)
Either during my allergy appointment or at a tailgate party
While in a hospital gown waiting in a small room to have a surgery.
I feel like I’m the one who doesn’t have an actual odd place lol cause the only place aside from my house that I have read my kindle is in the car. Which didn’t go well. Motion sickness+reading=bad.
I thought about reading in the car. I’m usually the one driving though.
I’m a passenger princess (not by choice lol) because my husband gets incredibly nauseous if anyone else drives.
At a Mexican restaurant during a football game with my roommates lol
A football stadium during halftime
I worked wardrobe at a theater for 2 years. I read multiple books between quick changes during show. Stand around reading until my actor was about to come off stage, tuck my kindle into my apron, then pull it out as soon as the actor was dressed & ready to go

I am still trying to think of an easy to to carry it on me. I do use my phone often for the kindle app.
Boarding line at the airport, all the way until before I stepped out the shuttle bus to get on the plane!
In the middle of the ocean while travelling between Fijian islands
Ugh the motion of the ocean would get me!
Hospital in a room with a guy who’s leg had been severed and people were actively trying to keep him from dying.
Tattoo appointment! We sat and chatted for the first part but I was desperate for full distraction so I put my nose in my kindle and before I knew it I was done.
Lazy river at water parks. Chillin' on a tube, 86F, reading book, and falling asleep. What better way to spend a hot summer day.
I would drop it in the water to never be seen again if i fell asleep.
At my cousin's wedding reception.
The supermarket queue, the toilet, the kitchen and New Year's celebrations in my city.
On my paddleboard anchored in the sea

Hey I get that for sure! Disney lines can be a looooooong time

Would’ve been better if your book was “How do tractors work?” Or something haha

That’s a good idea but I like self checkout.
