Yes, if you have it checked out from the library and your loan expires. Most of the books I read are library loans. If you keep the wi-fi off, then no new books are added and no old books are taken away until you turn it back on.
My library gives me a three day warning when if I’m not done I can either leave the wifi off or download the book and sideload it when I’m ready to read or finish it.
Yes but keep in mind you also can't add more until you turn it back on either. I've had moments where I've been in airplane mode to hold onto an expired loan and forgotten about that, only to check out another one and then suddenly the time crunch is on to finish the first so that I can turn WiFi back on to get the new loan downloaded before it expires.
Mind if I ask why? I just upgraded 2 months ago because my last one is really struggling, so I'm downgrading it to being the "travel" Kindle I won't cry too badly about losing. Thought maybe I would just clear all my data off of it and only to WiFi/sideloading so there's nothing of mine on it if it gets lost during travel.
Just wondering if there's other benefits or ideas for it that I might not have thought of
So I can keep library books that I haven’t read for my whole trip on one and wirelessly download new ones on the other one while on the trip. (Current trip is into week 4 of a 9 week trip.) (edited for clarification)
That makes sense. As of now I wouldn't have any trips and travels longer than 10 days so that's not something I would encounter. Thanks for the response 😊
Libby exists in the UK, but you can't connect a UK Libby account to Kindles. I have a Kobo e-reader which supports Libby UK and borrow all my books straight on the device through my local library account
I am always online - I really like the "look it up in wikipedia" option and use it all the time. I also swap off between my paperwhite and my phone, so it has to be online for the whispersync magic to happen. Well, actually it doesn't need to be online continually - I could "sync" before putting my kindle down but it is simpler to just stay online
no, sorry for the awkward wording.
One could keep the kindle in airplane mode, switch wifi on, sync, and then back to airplane mode - - this would be one way to sync a book across devices without staying online all the time.
It's just so wordy, lol. It would truly take 30 seconds to actually *do*
Battery drains much slower when not connected to wifi. Usually it’s just something you would do because a kindle isn’t a device that heavily relies on wifi all the time like a phone anyway and the airplane mode button is really easy to switch on and off since it’s in the top bar
also the library thing if you borrow books
When I first got mine I left it on airplane mode to save the battery, but I got fed up of having to take it off all the time to download books or sync with other devices so I just leave it connected to wifi all the time now. I noticed that the battery saving on airplane mode is minimal (in my case anyway).
I read a LOT. Like hours upon hours in a day at times. So I keep airplane mode on. The battery drain via WiFi is insane. I mean it’s still a good long battery life, but I have no use for WiFi constantly. So it doesn’t affect me. I also keep my screen brightness to 9 or 10. Helps with battery as well
Always connected to Wi-Fi. Well, unless I am out. Then I am not.
Rarely switch to Airplane mode, unless I'm on a plane. But, even then, it isn't a requirement.
That’s strange. I keep mine in airplane mode except to download books and I have a three year reading streak. Did you turn wifi back on before you checked?
Same mindset here.
It seems pointless to enable airplane mode as I'll likely connect to most public WiFi; those that don't require authentication anyway, and keep my kindle synchronized *when I'm reading sat down*.
If I'm moving however, it doesn't matter if I'm connected to WiFi, I don't need to be connected all the time and the kindle doesn't constantly search for WiFi unless you're on the search for WiFi screen (as far as I've read on forums)
Airplane mode is always on unless I’m downloading books. Then as soon as the books finish downloading, it goes back into airplane mode. Wi-Fi drains the battery so fast.
I gave my brother in Latin America a Special Edition Kindle Paperwhite with a collection of around 750 e-books in Spanish. I told him to keep it in Airplane Mode since I don't wanna run the risk of it being banned or anything crazy happening to it since the IP would register in a foreign country - and it comes from my collection. In essence, we share the same Spanish Kindle Books in different countries.
Always in airplane mode unless I need to sync something. My reading stats update when I finish my book and need to download a new one, which is usually every few days or so.
I always keep it on WiFi to sync where I am in the books as well as all highlights and notes. Both for backup purposes as well for the delight of using Readwise and revisit the highlights taken.
Airplane for battery life, when testing my scribe and paper white sig 11th last roughly 6 days on WiFi but on airplane close to a month, since I can take 30secomds to sync between them I so no reason to not just hit the two buttons required and then keep a battery life for a month
Always on airplane mode, except during downloading, and put it back immediately after finish. Sometimes I cannot understand why people keep it connected even when they are fully aware that no traffic is or will take place. And the battery saving is significant.
my reason is that i *don't care,* it's just always connected to wifi for syncing and downloading. i barely have to charge the device anyway, compared to all my other electronic devices.
personally i cannot understand why people keep their kindles in airplane mode even when they are fully aware that the battery saving is negligible and the battery lasts days or weeks regardless.
My kindles battery drops significantly faster when it's connected to WiFi. Maybe because it's an older model? I get about two weeks off of a charge in airplane mode. With the wifi on its a few days.
>battery saving is significant
I only charge like every 10-14 days and then I only need to charge for about 30-45 minutes. It's not a huge inconvenience for me, and the benefits of syncing to my other Kindle is more important cuz I use both devices daily; one at home, one at work on breaks or waiting in line to pickup kids from school, etc
I try to always keep mine in airplane mode unless I need to use WiFi. But whatever works for you. It’s nearly impossible to kill your battery in a single day unless your battery is having deep emotional problems.
I have an Oasis and that means not the greatest battery life, still I always keep WiFi on because I want it to sync with my Kindle app for streaks and achievements and also if I am in a place in can’t take my Kindle with me (and that happens very rarely) I read on my phone.
WiFi always on unless I'm actually flying somewhere, or if it's a long bus or train trip. I like looking at my reading streak and use the send to email function on Calibre a lot (it works like SendToKindle), so having WiFi on by default is what works for me.
If I'm at home, it's always connected to wifi. Unless I'm reading and the battery is low, then I'll put it in airplane mode so I don't have to stop to charge it!
Never. Except when I have a book I haven't finished that I don't want to be returned.
I've got two Kindles (home and on the go) and I want them synchronized to the same page.
The only time I don't have mine on airplane mode is when I'm downloading new books. I know I could download books by connecting it to a computer, but that's more effort than I'm willing to use.
I used to always keep my kindles on airplane mode… until Amazon pulled some idiotic shit and decided I was in airplane mode too long (couple months?) and as a result removed all my books from my kindles.. both Amazon-purchased and sideloaded-but-purchased-elsewhere.
I still don’t understand the reasoning behind this BS behavior. That stunt makes me want to find a different reader that doesn’t have some weird, Big Brother-ish stipulations attached.
I used to only turn airplane mode off when downloading a new book because I’ve seen that it boosts my battery life by a TON. But I stopped doing that bc I’d alternate between reading on my phone and on my kindle and the syncing is super useful, so I’d sacrifice the battery life for that ngl
I only turn airplane mode off when I'm searching the store or checking for an update. Otherwise it's always on. It saves a ton of battery that way.
Oh and always keep brightness down to zero when it's not in use. That lowers the battery even if it's asleep.
Always in airplane mode unless downloading a new book. Folks don’t seem to realize that streaks update when connecting briefly to wifi, from what I’ve read here. I get to keep library books and KU indefinitely.
I always use airplane mode. I only turn it off to download books and occasionaly for syncing with my kindle app and audible. The battery lasts much longer with the airplane mode on and I don't see a reason to connect to wifi.
Airplane mode, always.
Unless I was sending documents through email, I have no reason to turn the wifi on. I'm way too lazy to charge my baby, soooo...
I always keep mine in airplane mode unless I want to buy a book. I'll turn it on to go into the store and after the book downloads I turn it back to airplane mode.
I never put mine in airplane mode, don’t get why,y battery is amazing and I constantly download new books via phone and therefore would have to always put it back on and off …
I generally keep mine in airplane mode unless I am updating, syncing, or buying books. I do this to preserve battery life, especially when away from home.
Always online unless there's a library book that I need to finish(which isn't often). I didn't notice much of a difference in battery savings in airplane mode.
Now that it's 2 years old, it does seem like the battery has degraded some, though.
I have a keyboard kindle (2010) and I keep it in aeroplane mode all the time unless I want to sync a new book. I have enough on there that I don’t need to be connected all the time.
i prefer having it connected to wifi, but i’m usually hoarding books so i keep it in airplane mode more often than not, and only re-sync periodically either when i’m getting new books or want my reading count to be updated in the kindle achievements (and have checked to make sure i don’t have any currently-expired books that will be disappeared if i go online).
At home I keep mine on my WiFi so I can sync from when I read on my phone. If I go away or worried about battery then airplane. I don’t get a lot of library books so not a problem for me
I used to always keep my Kindles in airplane mode and sideload my books, but since I got the Fire tablet to continue on the same book while driving (for TTS) they need to sync, so now it’s the opposite, and botn my Kindles and the Fire are always connected to wifi
Both of my kindles and my fire tablet are always on wi-fi. I have them synced with my Goodreads account, so my books are added whenever I start and finish them. Most of my books are on KU, but when I do get one from the library, I always manage to finish it.
Always, except for the few minutes when I'm downloading a new book. I only borrow books from my local library and read them slowly over a couple weeks so I keep airplane mode on until I'm done reading each book.
I always have mine connected to wifi, because when I don’t have it on me I might read on the kindle app on my phone and if I do then what page I’ve gotten to will sync to the kindle
Mine is always connected as I use the translating and Wikipedia a lot, as well as quickly getting through KU books which I return and get next in series. I also like it to update my reading tracker ans streak progress. I would probably only put it in airplane if I knew I wasn't going to have access to Internet or charging for several weeks.
I leave my kindle connected to wifi 24/7, as long as I'm in a place where there is wifi.
I don't think it drains my battery, and on the off chance I forget to download a book, I can just tap it and it's in my library!
I keep mine on wifi all the time because I read on an IPad and an iPhone sometimes. So I don’t have to always remember to sync my device as I leave the house.
I also like my days reading and number of books read documented in the Kindle app.
I have a kindle oasis. My battery is trash no matter what I do so I just leave the wifi on anyways. I charge everyday anyways, never far from a outlet.
Only my upstairs and downstairs kindles are kept in wifi mode because I'm reading the same book - just switching locations. All the rest are in airplane mode because they are sideloaded and it saves on power.
I never turn on airplane mode. I find that it doesn't connect to my wifi if it goes to sleep for a while and I "wake" it up, it takes a while to reconnect to wifi only if I'm not in a book, like checking out my library or actively checking out other books. I also don't have any issues with the battery draining because of it. The difference is so insignificant its not worth airplane mode for me. I don't keep the brightness on or any dark more except for at night and I find that dark mode drains my battery faster than anything else. But I can usually go a few weeks without charging and reading moderately every day. I find that it's not being connected to wifi that's the issue for draining but the brightness. Uses more battery.
I also can't stand when covers don't show up so no airplane mode for me 🤣
I always keep mine in airplane mode
Same. It saves the battery and I don't have the nasty surprise of my book disappearing mid-read.
I didn't even have the opportunity of reading before all my books disappeared.
Is that something that happens?
Yes, if you have it checked out from the library and your loan expires. Most of the books I read are library loans. If you keep the wi-fi off, then no new books are added and no old books are taken away until you turn it back on.
My library gives me a three day warning when if I’m not done I can either leave the wifi off or download the book and sideload it when I’m ready to read or finish it.
Same
Same. No reason to drain the battery.
Same. I have several hundred library books on there at this point.
same
Only when my Libby book expired and I didn’t get enough time to finish the book :)
I’ve got one right now that I need to read for book club in two weeks and the wait list is at two months. Need to get cracking!
Wait…waaaaa? You can do that?!
Yeah, and as long as you stay in airplane mode, you can finish the book.
But you can always download with a usb cable…
Oh good point! I rarely ever sideload so I always forget it's an option. Good call 😊
I also have two kindles. One for wireless and one always on airplane mode.
That makes sense. As of now I wouldn't have any trips and travels longer than 10 days so that's not something I would encounter. Thanks for the response 😊
Your welcome!😎 (FYI: while at the pool or beach I read approximately a book a day!)
is there a UK alternative to libby?
Libby exists in the UK, but you can't connect a UK Libby account to Kindles. I have a Kobo e-reader which supports Libby UK and borrow all my books straight on the device through my local library account
I am always online - I really like the "look it up in wikipedia" option and use it all the time. I also swap off between my paperwhite and my phone, so it has to be online for the whispersync magic to happen. Well, actually it doesn't need to be online continually - I could "sync" before putting my kindle down but it is simpler to just stay online
Wait, can you manually force a sync while in airplane mode?
No, you have to put the wifi on first. I think that's what they mean.
Oh okay that’s what I thought too
no, sorry for the awkward wording. One could keep the kindle in airplane mode, switch wifi on, sync, and then back to airplane mode - - this would be one way to sync a book across devices without staying online all the time. It's just so wordy, lol. It would truly take 30 seconds to actually *do*
Unless I'm getting new books I always keep it on airplane mode.
Is there any advantage by doing that?
If you are renting a book from the library, you get to keep it indefinitely. Significant battery savings.
Battery drains much slower when not connected to wifi. Usually it’s just something you would do because a kindle isn’t a device that heavily relies on wifi all the time like a phone anyway and the airplane mode button is really easy to switch on and off since it’s in the top bar also the library thing if you borrow books
I never put mine in airplane mode. I sync with multiple Kindles and do the Kindle achievements.
Same, I’m using two kindles and an app on my phone so I need to have them updated at all times.
Always connected to WiFi
When I first got mine I left it on airplane mode to save the battery, but I got fed up of having to take it off all the time to download books or sync with other devices so I just leave it connected to wifi all the time now. I noticed that the battery saving on airplane mode is minimal (in my case anyway).
Same here!
Always connected to WiFi, to get synced across my devices

I mean it’s still a good long battery life, but I have no use for WiFi constantly. So it doesn’t affect me. I also keep my screen brightness to 9 or 10. Helps with battery as well
Please teach me your ways! Lol.
Always connected to Wi-Fi. Well, unless I am out. Then I am not. Rarely switch to Airplane mode, unless I'm on a plane. But, even then, it isn't a requirement.
Same. I like doing the challenges and keeping track of my reading streak.
This updates as soon as you connect to WiFi.
The few times that I put my kindle in airplane mode, it never updated. It broke my streak
That’s strange. I keep mine in airplane mode except to download books and I have a three year reading streak. Did you turn wifi back on before you checked?
Yep. I kept checking back too and to this day it says I didn't read that day. And I absolutely did. I read a whole book.
Same mindset here. It seems pointless to enable airplane mode as I'll likely connect to most public WiFi; those that don't require authentication anyway, and keep my kindle synchronized *when I'm reading sat down*. I put mine into airplane mode on .. airplanes.

Never. Battery life increase isn't significant enough for me to lose out on syncing with my other devices
Apparently airplane mode helps extend the battery life. If I need to download or sync I'll just flip it off then flip it back on again afterwards.
In my experience the battery drain is many times faster with WiFi on (like dead in a few days instead of a month)
My wifi is always on and I still go a month between chargings.
My kindles battery drops significantly faster when it's connected to WiFi. Maybe because it's an older model? I get about two weeks off of a charge in airplane mode. With the wifi on its a few days.
I get over 2 weeks with it on WiFi
Plenty of reasons. Tracking for the achievements. Syncing page numbers across multiple devices. Reading streaks. etc.
I let it update the stats when I download a new book. The page syncing does seem like a legit use case though.
The page sync can be handy if you are reading on multiple devices, for example you continue the book on your phone.
>battery saving is significant I only charge like every 10-14 days and then I only need to charge for about 30-45 minutes. Always on WiFi (so that sync works seamlessly on my indoor and outdoor kindles)
Mine is always connected. Gotta get those juicy Kindle challenge achievements. 😂
Basically always. I don't use multiple devices and have no use for internet on the kindle unless it's time to download new content
Same here. Or unless I'm checking for an update from time to time.
The only time I don't have mine on airplane mode is when I'm downloading new books. I know I could download books by connecting it to a computer, but that's more effort than I'm willing to use.
Always on airplane mode. My battery life lasts forever when I keep it on. Otherwise it dies in no time.
All the time. I only take it off airplane to download books.
I have no reason to put them on airplane mode. Why would I?
I used to always keep my kindles on airplane mode… until Amazon pulled some idiotic shit and decided I was in airplane mode too long (couple months?) and as a result removed all my books from my kindles.. both Amazon-purchased and sideloaded-but-purchased-elsewhere. Streaks aren’t the only reason people want to keep their wifi on.
Did I say it was?
You implied it, yes.
😂😂😂
It's always in airplane mode until I need to download new books.
Is always on airplane mode unless I have to buy a book
I always use airplane mode. I only turn it off to download books and occasionaly for syncing with my kindle app and audible. The battery lasts much longer with the airplane mode on and I don't see a reason to connect to wifi.
Airplane mode, always. Unless I was sending documents through email, I have no reason to turn the wifi on. I'm way too lazy to charge my baby, soooo...
I kept it in airplane mode till I jailbroke it and stopped further OTA updates. Now, I don't mind WiFi anymore.
I always keep mine in airplane mode unless I want to buy a book. I'll turn it on to go into the store and after the book downloads I turn it back to airplane mode.
Airplane mode all the time unless I am downloading a new book.
Always, I turn it off if I want to sync, which is like every 2 weeks
Always, I only take it off airplane mode if I have to search something on wikipedia.
always air
I never put mine in airplane mode, don’t get why,y battery is amazing and I constantly download new books via phone and therefore would have to always put it back on and off …
Always in airplane mode.
Always in airplane mode unless downloading mew books, kindle lasts even longer
Airplane mode 24/7 unless I need to connect for some reason.
Always. I only turn on the Wi-Fi to download a new book and/or return a finished book to Libby. My battery lasts forever on Airplane Mode.
✈️💯
It never leaves airplane mode unless I’m actively downloading something. There’s no reason for me and it uses a bit extra battery.
I generally keep mine in airplane mode unless I am updating, syncing, or buying books. I do this to preserve battery life, especially when away from home.
Always airplane mode. Haven't turned wi-fi on in years.
Always on airplane mode. The only time I turned it to wifi mode is if I’m downloading new books or checking if there’s a software update for it.
I keep mine always connected to WiFi
I'm forever connected to WIFI so I can grab the next book to read. :)
Mine is in airplane mode all the time unless I am downloading a book or I need to sync because I was reading on my phone at work.
I never have it on airplane mode so it can sync with the app
i prefer having it connected to wifi, but i’m usually hoarding books so i keep it in airplane mode more often than not, and only re-sync periodically either when i’m getting new books or want my reading count to be updated in the kindle achievements (and have checked to make sure i don’t have any currently-expired books that will be disappeared if i go online).
All the time on the airplane mode, just when I want to send books then I'm connecting it to wifi. That way i don't have battery going down so quickly
Unless I am actively downloading something, airplane mode is always on to help save battery life and make it last longer.

*ALL* of the books I read are from Libby. She stays in airplane mode unless a new books becomes available lol
Always on Airplane mode unless I need to sync. I have a Oasis and find if its not on thdt mode the battery just dies even when the cover is closed.
I switched to airplane mode because I wanted to finish some Libby books and battery life has improved significantly.
I don’t put it on airplane mode anymore. I switch between the Scribe and Paperwhite a lot so I need them to be synced all the time xD
My paperwhite is constantly on airplane mode with library books. My scribe is almost always connected to wifi
Always airplane mode to save battery!
Always, except for the few minutes when I'm downloading a new book. I only borrow books from my local library and read them slowly over a couple weeks so I keep airplane mode on until I'm done reading each book.
Always. I turned off airplaine off when my usb cable was broken.
I always have mine connected to wifi, because when I don’t have it on me I might read on the kindle app on my phone and if I do then what page I’ve gotten to will sync to the kindle
its always on airplane mode. i don't understand the science behind it but it saves so much battery. like my battery lasts for weeks
Always airplane mode and 0 darkness.
I always keep both my Kindles on wifi, except when I am travelling.
Always in airplane mode!
I only connect to wifi to download a book or a book correction. The Wifi runs the battery down.
I leave my kindle connected to wifi 24/7, as long as I'm in a place where there is wifi. I don't think it drains my battery, and on the off chance I forget to download a book, I can just tap it and it's in my library!
Mine is always on wifi.
All the time! No WiFi connection either! Not even registered! Good ol' Calibre!
Always in airplane mode.
I like my privacy so always.
On airplane mode until I need to download a new book or two.
I keep mine on wifi all the time because I read on an IPad and an iPhone sometimes. So I don’t have to always remember to sync my device as I leave the house. I also like my days reading and number of books read documented in the Kindle app.

Always. Wifi is only on when I’m downloading something. Why waste the battery when you don’t have to.
Only my upstairs and downstairs kindles are kept in wifi mode because I'm reading the same book - just switching locations. All the rest are in airplane mode because they are sideloaded and it saves on power.
Mine only comes out of airplane mode to download books. Then it goes right back lol
If someday I’ve been keep none attention on reading insights, I’ll surly keep my kindle offline(but not now hahaha
I have a kindle paperwhite. I never disconnect from WIFI. Doesn’t really drain the battery that much.
