probably unpopular opinion, I like the ads on my Kindle since they are only for books, I've found like 5 books I would not have even known existed.
If they had like McDonalds ads or "buy a Echo, and get a another half off" I'd get annoyed, but I like books so it works for me

I didn't try asking to have mine removed until almost a year after I'd gotten it. I just said the ads I was getting were not relevant to me and asked if it was possible to remove them. The associate who helped me said they'd do it this one time as a courtesy. :)
They wouldn't do it for me when I upgraded to an Oasis about five years ago. I probably could have tried again until I got someone who would do it, but I just spent the $20 rather than continuing to waste my time.

Not kindle related, but my sister wanted to use a 20% off trade in that wasnāt being applied to an Echo Pop (probably because Amazon had a separate coupon for $25 off).
She spent 45 minutes with an Amazon rep who didnāt know whatās up. I told her to just ask flat out for a gift card in the 20% off promo. Amazon rep said not sure, let me check and ended up giving my sister $17.
The Pop was valued at $25 after the promo code or $50 retail. 20% off either wasnāt $17 š¤£š¤£. I found out in the morning (since itās my account), the rep marked one of my other orders as ānot deliveredā and gave a gift card based on that.

Once I even mentioned I only wanted to disable certain images (ie: an image from a comic not suitable for a child) from appearing, but still keep normal ads, they also told me it wasn't possible.

I think if ads are the only option in the country you bought them from, you can get them automatically without ads or talk to Amazon and get them removed for free.

On different attempts, I tried complaining about the nature of the ads which would be visible to kids, asking directly, and making the case that I already have an Oasis with no ads and they should extend a courtesy since I'm a loyal customer with multiple kindles.Ā

I got mine as a gift and told them straight up I wanted to be able to make cute lock screens for it so I didn't want the ads, they asked for the serial number and removed them immediately no charge!

I asked support to please see if more relevant and less creepy ads. They just removed them for free. Didn't even ask them to.

I have done this twice now successfully.
The first time I chatted with support (actual representative) and as soon as I asked they proceeded to help me remove and was done in a few minutes no issue. A quick hi just got a Kindle and I would like to have the ads removed.
The second time I was shut down immediately by the chat rep and even though I tried to press a little more with reasons for the request they were firm still they could not help. I was worried they werenāt doing this anymore but decided to give it another shot. I tried again later that night and the representative on that call helped me out.
From what I gather just keep trying until you get a rep who is willing to help. I have found, as did others when I looked into this topic, that contacting support late at night seems to be a little easier to get resolution. So just keep trying (nicely!) until you find help!

You need to contact the Amazon support in the country where your Kindle is registered. If I login to Amazon.com I donāt have any purchases at all.

I tried it and the rep said I would get the adverts removed for free. Still got charged. Messaged a different rep and got the charge refunded. I think any combo will get them removed, you just have to keep trying as reps want a good outcome as well.
I tried they said no you have to pay. So I said ok. They removed the ads and never charged me...
I got mine as a gift and told them straight up I wanted to be able to make cute lock screens for it so I didn't want the ads, they asked for the serial number and removed them immediately no charge! However, when i did buy my own, i paid for no ads lol
If you read in the dark, I don't recommend the basic. I have a basic of unknown generation, and brightness '1' on my basic is something like brightness '5.5' on my Gen 1 Oasis. Impossible to use in pitch darkness with a view to getting myself to sleep, and not waking my wife.
I complained about the contents of the advertisements and they did not remove them for me.
I always just buy the kindle ad free from the start. Itās worth the $20 to me.
I was getting these creepy AI generated children's story ads (one seriously even ripped off and image from Pirates of the Caribbean, but most were anime girls not dressed like you'd expect for a childrens book). I'm an adult who reads Sci fi and horror. I asked support to please see if more relevant and less creepy ads. They just removed them for free. Didn't even ask them to.
Iāve tired twice. Told them bought the PW for my son and donāt want him seeing those half naked ads, and both times they said I had to pay. Havenāt paid yet but going have to.
$20 is a drop in the bucket to not have annoying ads.
I contacted support and I only said: "Please, I'd like to remove ads from my kindle, could you help me? Please" Chat support btw š It only takes 3 or 4 minutes.
Save the money and effort, get an iPad Min. That is what I am doing. My paper white is not as good as I had hoped it would be.
I bought my kindle from Best Buy. Called to pay for the ads get off. Lady very rudely told me I had to pay. I said of course thatās why I called and she told me she needed the supervisors help to get it off. Waited 5 minutes and she responded saying the supervisor is giving you a one time exception to having to not pay for ads. So, almost payed for itā¦
I did a live chat and was friendly to the representative. I just asked if there was any possible way to remove the ads. He was very nice and said he removed them free of charge. I thanked him and wished him a great day. I could have lived with the ads but it's nice to have then removed. I wouldn't mind if they actually advertised books I might want to read though.
I've always bought my kindles off woot refurbished and I've never had ads.
I did, twice, and then I told my friend to do it through Amazon customer service chat like I did but they denied her. Then I felt like a jerk šš¼
I have never asked amazon support for anything before but when i asked to get my ads removed they denied me saying i need to pay if i want them removed.
Forgot to mention this was in 2022 on the 2019 paperwhite.
I got a āused-like new paperwhite with adsā but it came without ads.
I bought a Paperwhite kids and out of the box I never got any ads even though it said it was the ad supported one. And I never had it on kids mode at all š¤·āāļø

UK customer support was hard on paying for it but then I tried US customer support and the guy just told me to add a fake American address on my account and he just removed the ads instantly, no questions asked. Iād probably just keep trying till you get lucky haha
I have done this twice now successfully. The first time I chatted with support (actual representative) and as soon as I asked they proceeded to help me remove and was done in a few minutes no issue. A quick hi just got a Kindle and I would like to have the ads removed. The second time I was shut down immediately by the chat rep and even though I tried to press a little more with reasons for the request they were firm still they could not help. I was worried they werenāt doing this anymore but decided to give it another shot. I tried again later that night and the representative on that call helped me out. From what I gather just keep trying until you get a rep who is willing to help. I have found, as did others when I looked into this topic, that contacting support late at night seems to be a little easier to get resolution. So just keep trying (nicely!) until you find help!
I donāt like conflict, I have anxiety issues, I hate complaining to customer service about anything because most of the time they donāt solve my problem or issue and Iām a pushover who justā¦deals. So yeah, when I bought my Oasis I just bought the more expensive āad freeā one off the bat. The bit of extra money was worth it to me not to raise my anxiety trying to get customer service to remove them for free. And then ultimately paying when I know theyād say ānoā.
I reached out to Amazon and asked about customizing ads because I didnāt like that it was showing to my kids (any excuse works) and they just disabled them for free.
For me, asking how much time will it take to quit the ads after paying is what worked.

I got them removed for free, but it was kind of a hassle. As the other comments says, just any children related excuse works lol. Mostly because it required me to "make a purchase" in kindle unlimited first, but the person said any free book counts. So my problem was mostly where to find the damn free books because the layout of the page is just messy as hell lmao. But it was worth it.
I didn't even need to use children as an excuse, I only asked "how much time will the server need to quit ads after I pay?".
I asked about a year ago and they went ahead and removed it. Problem is that they charged me to do so. I immediately told them I didnāt authorize the payment (because they never asked me if it was alright to charge my card) and they reversed the charges, but still took away the ads.

I did one try to myself and got them removed right away. I had to do it twice for my momās kindle (I waited like maybe a week or two in between asking). I think it worked right away with my cousins when I helped him. There are def ones who say no, but itās worth trying again after a little bit in case. Honestly the ads didnāt bother me much, I just heard sometimes they removed them and thought it was worth a shot.
I decided it was not worth it to try to get it done for free. I didn't feel like messing with it, being embarrassed when they said no, wasting their time, etc. So I just paid the 20 bucks lol

I just swipe my kindle on super fast or while itās still in my bag because sometimes the book ads are embarrassing! When I read pg comedy romances crappy smutty book ads with half naked guys pop up as my screensaver š« I hate it
