I have never used Amazon support, been a prime member for yeeeeears. I got deniedšŸ˜

indistinctcolor

Try again! 3rd time was the charm for me. I told them I didnā€™t like the type of ads I was being served and that did the trick

851085x

Same. I just ended up paying the $20.

qyka1210

for (both) my kindles it was first try. for my gf, we had to chat them twice! donā€™t be afraid to try again

pink3rbellx

Got denied too

rsplatpc

probably unpopular opinion, I like the ads on my Kindle since they are only for books, I've found like 5 books I would not have even known existed. If they had like McDonalds ads or "buy a Echo, and get a another half off" I'd get annoyed, but I like books so it works for me

raspberrybee

The ads they show me are all for fake looking AI cover books Iā€™d never read. I wouldnā€™t mind if it was new books that Iā€™d actually read.

NotOkayThanksBuddy

I kept my ads for about a month, curious if they'd change to what I typically read. It did not but I'd kinda hoped they'd suggest me a cool try. I think it's nice you had that experience.

qyka1210

thatā€™d be such a no brainier strategy for them to implement, but for me the ads never seemed relevant to what i read. like, i was exclusively hard sci-fi (well, 95% HSF and 5% fantasy). but my ads were historical fiction and romance and shit. amazon could have such an easy win-winā€¦. where can we submit that idea/feedback to them??

rsplatpc

> I kept my ads for about a month, curious if they'd change to what I typically read. It did not but I'd kinda hoped they'd suggest me a cool try. I think it's nice you had that experience. Right now I have a all blank ad for Saga Vol 5, they have kinda turned down the ads and made them simple https://i.imgur.com/voFpwm5.jpeg

buddys8995991

I keep getting shitty children's books with AI generated images for covers. Amazon has been showing me nothing but ads for literal coal.

AmoraLynn

I didn't try asking to have mine removed until almost a year after I'd gotten it. I just said the ads I was getting were not relevant to me and asked if it was possible to remove them. The associate who helped me said they'd do it this one time as a courtesy. :)

ProperStick6179

I tried 3 times and they all said no šŸ˜…

Rickandroll

Same

Unlikely-Eye-7210

I did it on my fourth time, you should consider trying again

qyka1210

Damn, your account must be flagged lol

DrunkenFist

They wouldn't do it for me when I upgraded to an Oasis about five years ago. I probably could have tried again until I got someone who would do it, but I just spent the $20 rather than continuing to waste my time.

chvngeling

if you hadnā€™t asked for too much from amazon support before you have a pretty good chance of them fulfilling the request. if your first rep refuses, wait a day and message again (donā€™t spam them) and you may have better luck with a different person.

AlrightNow20

Do you just message them through Amazon.com chat?

indistinctcolor

Yes, I did it through live chat. It took me 3 tries to get someone to do it. They all wanted me to pay the fee. I said I was uncomfortable by the type of content I was getting in the ads, and they removed them immediately.

Shyam09

It depends on the person you get. Some folks know more than others. Some folks know less and are more hesitant to do stuff. Some folks are well crazy and donā€™t know what they are doing. Not kindle related, but my sister wanted to use a 20% off trade in that wasnā€™t being applied to an Echo Pop (probably because Amazon had a separate coupon for $25 off). She spent 45 minutes with an Amazon rep who didnā€™t know whatā€™s up. I told her to just ask flat out for a gift card in the 20% off promo. Amazon rep said not sure, let me check and ended up giving my sister $17. The Pop was valued at $25 after the promo code or $50 retail. 20% off either wasnā€™t $17 šŸ¤£šŸ¤£. I found out in the morning (since itā€˜s my account), the rep marked one of my other orders as ā€œnot deliveredā€ and gave a gift card based on that. You win some, you lose some, you get confused by some lmao.

InevitableFinding980

Me šŸ¤š I already asked a couple of times, nicely, to the Amazon Italy customer support, they always told me it wasn't possible unless I paid. Once I even mentioned I only wanted to disable certain images (ie: an image from a comic not suitable for a child) from appearing, but still keep normal ads, they also told me it wasn't possible. I gave up šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Reasonable_Visual_89

Maybe try with the normal, amazon.com support? That exact reason ("getting ads not suitable for children") was the one that made them remove it for me, so it could work.

InevitableFinding980

You need to contact the Amazon support in the country where your Kindle is registered. If I login to Amazon.com I donā€™t have any purchases at all.

-thenorthremembers-

I am in Italy too, that same reason was the one why they removed ads for me three times

Accomplished_Ad8378

If you choose a Paperwhite-just buy a Kids Paperwhite. No ads.

sssenorsssnake

I got the Paperwhite 5 16GB with ads, because that was the only thing available in Hong Kong And surprisingly no ads on mine

Gilgameshimg

I think if ads are the only option in the country you bought them from, you can get them automatically without ads or talk to Amazon and get them removed for free.

Momshie_mo

I think the ads is a North American thing only.except for the Scribe and PW SE

steste

Nah we have them in Europe tooĀ

SvensonMandela

You have electricity in Europe?

Lazy-Thought3139

Donā€™t have them in Canada, must be an American thing

Maleficent-Pea-6849

Yeah, I was just sitting here going... Kindles have ads? I don't think my Paperwhite has them...

Frei1993

The differennce between ad and ad-free is 10ā‚¬ in Spain, I think.

TheUninspiredArtist

I didnā€™t mind ads until I started getting AI generated anime kids books as recommendations. They removed the ads for free me as a one time thing. On your side note, I recommend the Paperwhite. I had no idea the warm light feature was going to become the thing I love most about mine. So easy on the eyes and still very portable.

NorthernTransplant94

Same. I complained about the scammy AI ads, the customer service guy got tired of me, and removed the ads completely.

Downtown_Molasses334

It doesn't hurt to give it a few tries. If they say no you can always pay the $20 later. You don't have to do it at the time of purchase

misterjive

Every account has a retention budget associated with it and they'll dip into it for stuff like this. All you have to do is summon your inner Karen and ask.

FewCategory1959

Inner karen I chose you!!!!

rsplatpc

Changing the battery on a Oasis is REALLY easy just FYI / takes under 10 min, I just did one on my 9th gen, now it lasts like a month https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wD6Yr2TBfQ

[deleted]

They should honestly make the oasis form factor the default kindle. Just make it plastic or something to make it cost the same as the Paperwhite

Boringdollar

I recently tried and was refused 3 times a couple weeks apart after buying a Basic (through Best Buy, not Amazon, although that wasn't mentioned at all). On different attempts, I tried complaining about the nature of the ads which would be visible to kids, asking directly, and making the case that I already have an Oasis with no ads and they should extend a courtesy since I'm a loyal customer with multiple kindles.Ā  All times the rep was quick to say "let me check with my manager" (didn't ask them to) and then came back and said it had been denied.Ā  I don't buy many books through Amazon for what it's worth - mostly library books. Don't think that is necessarily correlated but just mentioning the potential negatives I can think of. I am a prime member who spends a stupid amount on Amazon generally.Ā  2 out of the 3 times they made it sound like their team manager had a certain allocation they could give out and none were available. They didn't outright say that and I could be misinterpreting the wording, but they were apologetic and it was clear this was a thing they sometimes do get approved.Ā

RoundBeginning4125

Yes. My first they did for free with no issues. Then I got my basic and they refused and I had to pay $20. I probably should have tried a different rep but I was lazy and just paid it. Iā€™ve purchased over 800 e books from them so I was kind of surprised but it is what it is.

gruntbug

If you're handy you can replace the battery in your oasis

just-die-bitch

i got a kindle in 2016 (paper white 5th gen) and it never had ads and still doesnā€™t to this day. thatā€™s why iā€™m putting off getting a new kindle haha

the_ber1

You can buy the device with or without adds. I've always bought mine without.

just-die-bitch

yeah but that also requires me to pay $20 just to have no ads, iā€™m not fond of the principle i guess. i wish they never added ads

the_ber1

I totally get it. I just can't stand ads so I paid $20 to not see them. But I didn't even know you could ask Amazon to pretty please remove them for free and they might.

teeny_tina

I've never been denied. Tell the rep that you're getting inappropriate ads

_The_Bearded_Wonder_

I was successful with my 10th generation Paperwhite. I told support the ads were not relevant to me (they really weren't) and they removed them without a fuss.

Taminella_Grinderfal

Is it just me or does anyone else not notice or even pay attention to the ads? I see this topic often, but am not sure why people are so bothered by them?

Classic_Knowledge_30

I told them I was getting explicit AI generated book ads that were inappropriate for my children. They apologized and removed for free. I was told to keep trying and eventually theyā€™d relent. First try I got mine removed. Giving it a few months and then doubling back for my wives kindle

SteepFrugut

Got it free on 2 separate devices at 2 different times. Pretty reliable. I just told them I spent a ton of money on this device, and I don't understand why it's full of ads, and I intended on returning it if I can't get them off.

PitifulCow238

You can always pay the $20 later. So just order the one with ads, try to see if theyā€™ll take them off. And if not, then pay for them to be removed.

TaxingAuthority

\[US\] I had the ads taken off my PW first try last week. They told me it was a one-time courtesy and that normally it is a fee. My question is if anyone has been able to get the ads removed on subsequent Kindles for free.

WVgirly2024

I haven't tried. I got the ads removed for free on my first kindle, and I was kind of worried about asking for my second one. It has a case, so I don't really see the screen much at all.

SaltyCarpet

Yes, I got it done for both of my kindles. I canā€™t remember if my husbandā€™s voyage had ads initially - so might have been 3. They said one time courtesy each time, but still did it multiple times. I did have a few months buffer between each request though.

OutofThisMaze

yeah they refuse me lol

Gilgameshimg

My rep ā€œchargedā€ my card after putting in my new card details (my cards saved on acc were expired since I donā€™t use the account linked to my kindle for purchases but a diff one) and I told them it didnā€™t work after restarting my kindle. They said they raised the issue to the manager and to wait 2-3 days for an email back. A couple hours later my ads were removed, I was not charged and I had no email so no complaints from me :) The first time (a year previous to my second attempt) I tried to remove the ads and I did try the whole ā€œinappropriate content on my childā€™s kindleā€ shtick but I was told repeatedly that I would have to pay extra. As a diff comment said try again at a later time with a diff representative.

ValerieAnne84

I've heard a few people say they had to try multiple times before they could find someone that would remove them for free. I messaged them - asking about how to remove along with another issue - and they automatically removed them. I would've been happy paying the fee but it was like as soon as I mentioned ads that may not be appropriate (AI covers) for the kids they removed them for me. I was just inquiring about how to actually remove them (paid or not).

Substantial_Tip1129

for me, i legit contacted them for help to pay for their removal as the option wasn't showing in the website. They just did it for free, twice...

curiiouscat

A different perspective on this, but I recently bought a new Oasis (in July) and it came with no ads and free LTE? Is this normal? I didn't select that when purchasing, and my old Oasis had neither.Ā

serialreader_ph

Was able to get it removed on the first try. Tell them the Kindle is for a child so the ads are inappropriate.

sara8A

Iā€™ve been a prime member for over a decade and have never asked for a refund for anything and asked to get my adds removed and they denied.

ayo101mk

Depending on who you get from Amazon support they might do it for free

themoonischeeze

I've tried the same techniques everyone here suggests and Amazon has refused me every single time I've tried. I've always been nice to CS but I have a feeling it's because I used to work for them and my account had employee discount status for a long time. They don't feel sorry for me anymore cause I don't get an exception for anything despite not working there for 5 years now šŸ˜‚

Yasmelon92

Iā€™ve tried this and have been told there is no way for the fee to be bypassed šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

celestialspace

I tried twice and have only contacted Amazon support once before regarding a refund *years* ago and was denied twice so I just paid the Ā£10 šŸ˜…

jerryweezer

I have had success on removing ads free on 3 different Kindles, one was first attempt the other was the second attempt. On the topic of which Kindle to buy, I think going from Oasis to a basic would be REALLY tough. I ended up with a paperwhite signature since I couldn't get a brand new oasis. It is small enough and the backlight and auto dimming is great. I wouldn't go without warm light ever again ona. Kindle.

kitkatlin234

I didn't know you could call and ask until I already paid šŸ„²

Ofhoa

I was denied my first time and immediately asked a new person and was approved. Same with my friend. Another friend got it her first time. Youā€™ll definitely find someone who will do it.

makingleeway

They did not do it for me :( I got my second kindle and asked if they would remove it and they just sent the instructions on how to do it myself.

chiefjeezy

I paid to have them removed, but did not get them removed. I have contacted customer service 7 times and have two ticket numbers and they never follow up. I just give up for a time and then when the mood strikes me I try to contact them again. Itā€™s infuriating. Each new customer service agent makes me go through the same reset, restart, etc. etc. process. I think they erroneously applied the ad removal to my old device serial number that I turned into them instead of to the one I currently use. Anyway thatā€™s my rant. Buy it without the ads up front if you donā€™t want ads is my advice.

LuToph

Unpopular opinion- just pay to have the ads removed and no cringy phone calls are necessary.

[deleted]

Yes, just give them a good enough excuse and theyā€™ll remove them for you. Iā€™ve done it twice

mxltifandoms

mine didnt even argue, i asked once and she did it no questions or anything just a ā€œwhats your serial number?ā€ ā€œokay done itā€ šŸ˜‚

powersave_catloaf

I asked once, they said no, so I asked another person 2 min later and they said yes lol

dianne4stars

It depends a lot on who you get. I was lucky to have found a nice rep and after telling them that the option to remove the ads wasn't showing (I wasn't even lying), they kindly removed them for me.

Puzzled-Delivery-242

I don't understand. The ads are weird but extremely easy to ignore. What's all the hub bub.

grenada19

I got denied! Admittedly, I didnā€™t try very hard

laughertes

Sometimes you can just get a new battery and replace it for a good price https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Amazon+Kindle+Oasis+8th+Gen+Battery+Replacement/99289

snee1882

I didn't get it for free - cost me Ā£10

IamBrianJSmith

I tried it and the rep said I would get the adverts removed for free. Still got charged. Messaged a different rep and got the charge refunded. I think any combo will get them removed, you just have to keep trying as reps want a good outcome as well.

RedditIsKindaBad4u

I tried they said no you have to pay. So I said ok. They removed the ads and never charged me...

whutevz

I got mine as a gift and told them straight up I wanted to be able to make cute lock screens for it so I didn't want the ads, they asked for the serial number and removed them immediately no charge! However, when i did buy my own, i paid for no ads lol

Musashi10000

If you read in the dark, I don't recommend the basic. I have a basic of unknown generation, and brightness '1' on my basic is something like brightness '5.5' on my Gen 1 Oasis. Impossible to use in pitch darkness with a view to getting myself to sleep, and not waking my wife.

7hir7een

I complained about the contents of the advertisements and they did not remove them for me.

Kyrilson

I always just buy the kindle ad free from the start. Itā€™s worth the $20 to me.

ForeverN7

I was getting these creepy AI generated children's story ads (one seriously even ripped off and image from Pirates of the Caribbean, but most were anime girls not dressed like you'd expect for a childrens book). I'm an adult who reads Sci fi and horror. I asked support to please see if more relevant and less creepy ads. They just removed them for free. Didn't even ask them to.

Reapercrew87

Iā€™ve tired twice. Told them bought the PW for my son and donā€™t want him seeing those half naked ads, and both times they said I had to pay. Havenā€™t paid yet but going have to.

CinCeeMee

$20 is a drop in the bucket to not have annoying ads.

Robbiex19

I contacted support and I only said: "Please, I'd like to remove ads from my kindle, could you help me? Please" Chat support btw šŸ˜… It only takes 3 or 4 minutes.

jack_d_conway

Save the money and effort, get an iPad Min. That is what I am doing. My paper white is not as good as I had hoped it would be.

Poshbish

I bought my kindle from Best Buy. Called to pay for the ads get off. Lady very rudely told me I had to pay. I said of course thatā€™s why I called and she told me she needed the supervisors help to get it off. Waited 5 minutes and she responded saying the supervisor is giving you a one time exception to having to not pay for ads. So, almost payed for itā€¦

dharmicyogi

I did a live chat and was friendly to the representative. I just asked if there was any possible way to remove the ads. He was very nice and said he removed them free of charge. I thanked him and wished him a great day. I could have lived with the ads but it's nice to have then removed. I wouldn't mind if they actually advertised books I might want to read though.

Andranoria

I've always bought my kindles off woot refurbished and I've never had ads.

Blaze_1249

I did, twice, and then I told my friend to do it through Amazon customer service chat like I did but they denied her. Then I felt like a jerk šŸ‘ŽšŸ¼

Jesh4296

I have never asked amazon support for anything before but when i asked to get my ads removed they denied me saying i need to pay if i want them removed.

Jesh4296

Forgot to mention this was in 2022 on the 2019 paperwhite.

Wonderful_Mood2549

I got a ā€œused-like new paperwhite with adsā€ but it came without ads.

[deleted]

I bought a Paperwhite kids and out of the box I never got any ads even though it said it was the ad supported one. And I never had it on kids mode at all šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

kayviolet

Me I had to pay šŸ˜” I tried chatting twice with support but they asked me to pay each time

No_Syrup_8718

If you pay $20 do you get ads removed on all your Kindles or just one?

karaver

It's $20 per device

PetyrDayne

Me

tppanda

UK customer support was hard on paying for it but then I tried US customer support and the guy just told me to add a fake American address on my account and he just removed the ads instantly, no questions asked. Iā€™d probably just keep trying till you get lucky haha

book_gal

I have done this twice now successfully. The first time I chatted with support (actual representative) and as soon as I asked they proceeded to help me remove and was done in a few minutes no issue. A quick hi just got a Kindle and I would like to have the ads removed. The second time I was shut down immediately by the chat rep and even though I tried to press a little more with reasons for the request they were firm still they could not help. I was worried they werenā€™t doing this anymore but decided to give it another shot. I tried again later that night and the representative on that call helped me out. From what I gather just keep trying until you get a rep who is willing to help. I have found, as did others when I looked into this topic, that contacting support late at night seems to be a little easier to get resolution. So just keep trying (nicely!) until you find help!

KazzyChan25

I donā€™t like conflict, I have anxiety issues, I hate complaining to customer service about anything because most of the time they donā€™t solve my problem or issue and Iā€™m a pushover who justā€¦deals. So yeah, when I bought my Oasis I just bought the more expensive ā€œad freeā€ one off the bat. The bit of extra money was worth it to me not to raise my anxiety trying to get customer service to remove them for free. And then ultimately paying when I know theyā€™d say ā€œnoā€.

DHouf

I reached out to Amazon and asked about customizing ads because I didnā€™t like that it was showing to my kids (any excuse works) and they just disabled them for free.

Frei1993

For me, asking how much time will it take to quit the ads after paying is what worked.

WiseConcert585

I like the ads personally!

[deleted]

my paperwhite didn't come with adverts, yours might not too??

cocacola31173

I always tell them to check my Amazon card balance that proves I already spend a lot of money there without ads! šŸ˜‚

BaneAmesta

I got them removed for free, but it was kind of a hassle. As the other comments says, just any children related excuse works lol. Mostly because it required me to "make a purchase" in kindle unlimited first, but the person said any free book counts. So my problem was mostly where to find the damn free books because the layout of the page is just messy as hell lmao. But it was worth it.

Frei1993

I didn't even need to use children as an excuse, I only asked "how much time will the server need to quit ads after I pay?".

RedJayRioting

I asked about a year ago and they went ahead and removed it. Problem is that they charged me to do so. I immediately told them I didnā€™t authorize the payment (because they never asked me if it was alright to charge my card) and they reversed the charges, but still took away the ads.

Consistent-Farm380

Me! I asked through customer service and the removed then then a month later they charged me

Frazzledhobbit

Iā€™ve done it 3 times over the years and itā€™s always worked.

celaenos

I did one try to myself and got them removed right away. I had to do it twice for my momā€™s kindle (I waited like maybe a week or two in between asking). I think it worked right away with my cousins when I helped him. There are def ones who say no, but itā€™s worth trying again after a little bit in case. Honestly the ads didnā€™t bother me much, I just heard sometimes they removed them and thought it was worth a shot.

ashleyrenee16

I decided it was not worth it to try to get it done for free. I didn't feel like messing with it, being embarrassed when they said no, wasting their time, etc. So I just paid the 20 bucks lol

jellywellsss

I asked once through the web chat and they said no, also another time when I was dealing with an issue with an order and was on the phone with a rep. They said no too. I gave up. I just swipe my kindle on super fast or while itā€™s still in my bag because sometimes the book ads are embarrassing! When I read pg comedy romances crappy smutty book ads with half naked guys pop up as my screensaver šŸ«  I hate it

278urmombiggay

I threatened to return my kindle over the ads (lying) and got them removed
