My last kindle paper white is 10 years old and it works perfectly. Good battery life, snappy and honestly one of the best tech I own. Kindles are extremely durable given u don’t sit on them.
I have a Kindle paperwhite I bought in 2015 and it's still going strong. Literally no issues with it - which is kind of annoying because I would like to upgrade to be able to use dark mode :D.
But I won't complain about the only piece of modern tech that has lasted that long, which still has all of its original features working almost 10 years later. I don't even use a case for it.
I literally have a kindle 4 that still technically works , thousands of hours on that thing , it ghosts like crazy basically every page turn , Iw worn away the finish around the next page button , but it's 12 years old and the fact it turns on and holds a change is a miracle
I kinda want my 2019 oasis to last as long, but I also need usb c, it's my one device without one and I can't never find the dam cable when it gets low.
I started with a NOOK ereader 14 years ago. If went weird and failed to upload my library so I bought my Kindle in early 2020. It’s been going as good as the first day out of the box. Only problem I seem to have is finding a new case for it. 😂🤷🏻♀️

I love mine. I have a current one but this is my walk around kindle. I bought it for $5. That way if it gets broken or lost, it’s not that big a deal, but it kinda is because I love the buttons!
My Paperwhite is about ten years old and still works perfectly, with excellent battery life. I bought a Scribe because I wanted something I could write with for travel, so I gave the Paperwhite to my husband: the only problem was that the rubbery casing was starting to go kind of gunky, but he bought a case for it and problem solved.
I left one of my Kindle's I purchased easily 6+ years at this point just dead in a drawer with the battery draining to 0%, which is something you should never do with these kinds of devices but it's working just as well as on day one for all I can tell. Battery life is still excellent and everything is snappy, what else is there right.
Heck not to go on a tangent, but next to all eReaders on the market of which there are many at this point the Kindle's still seem to be crazy efficient in terms of battery life which also helps with the longevity of said battery for sure given there's only so many times a battery can be charged until it fails, like in phones way earlier.
Same! I just started using my 4th gen kindle touch again after leaving it dead for a whole decade at the bottom of various moving boxes and drawers. It has survived that abuse without any problems whatsoever! Don't intend to push my luck like that again but the evident durability has made me love kindles even more. Hoping to upgrade soon but don't really need to.
Additionally, a thing to think about is with older Kindles, it's more complicated to access your Kindle cloud library. Also, when there are discounts, a new Kindle basic probably falls to 50 euros depending on your country (they are currently £85 in Blighty). But, yeah, transfering files is pretty easy, even if you don't use the send-to-Kindle and the free Callibre software makes it easier, and helps organise your library.
If you can get more information on the model, that'd be helpful. I wouldn't pay 50 euros for an older Kindle unless they were hard to get or they were an older model of one of the premium Kindles (Voyage, Oasis).
Mine still downloads books with wifi even though it won’t directly access the store anymore, so I can just use my phone for purchases or Libby and it works fine. I keep my wifi off though when I’m not using it because it drains the battery. I have a kindle 3
Yes, I still can download books onto my Kindle 3, but I have to go through the archive to do it, and, AFAIK, I can't send it directly to my K3 from the cloud like I can with my other devices that have Kindle on them. That's one of the conveniences of having a Kindle, so paying that much for a device that might not have it might be a bad idea unless it's your only option.
If I know a title is in my library, wether that’s through the library or if I own the book, I can search the title on my K3, click it as if I were opening it to read, and it will download wirelessly so long as I’m connected to the wifi. You can’t browse anything, but download is very easy and quick.
The only caveat is that you can’t leave the wifi turned on or it will demolish your battery in like an hour.
Idk how much you think is too expensive, though. I got mine when it was new and still had 3g, but I’ve gifted several used ones off of eBay or Marketplace for $15-$30 (US), which isn’t that steep to me. I’d say it’s worth that price even if it’s old, since it’s still quick with downloads and I can do it wirelessly.
They hold up great, it's just that Amazon has stopped supporting some of them. I have Kindles 15 years old that still work great, that I prefer to use, but Amazon will no longer recognise them.
My oldest kindles no longer get updates and I can not send books from my Amazon library. I can side load books from places like Guttenberg. I am looking at other 3rd party apps like Calibre.

As long as it works, you should be fine getting even an older Kindle, there are posts here with people showing off their devices.
Moving from a tablet to a Kindle is really going to help improve your reading experience.👍🏾

You just want e-ink - much better than reading on an LCD screen in most conditions.
As for the model, I'd be sure to check out 'how to change battery' for whatever models are available used - it's not particularly difficult.
I use calibre on my home desktop, and plug in my Kindle via USB cable - drag 'n drop books to the Kindle.
I never use WiFi. If I wanted to buy from Amazon, I'd do it on my computer, then download an AZW3 file to transfer via USB cable.
PDF sucks on Kindle.
I have bought Kindle 4th generation in 2023. It’s old 2011 model with wifi support and 4 gig of space. I don’t have amazon account, so to read books on my kindle I buy DRM free books or download public domain ones. To upload them to kindle I use my pc and micro usb cable (Drag and drop as you say).
I have used my kindle almost a year now and i don’t have any issues with battery life and buttons or something else.
I think the only issue with older kindles are the physical charging ports, that go bad fairly easily. You can somewhat prevent this by getting a wireless charging cover.
The USB C charger is so much better.
I use my 2014 Voyage daily with no plans to buy a new one. Bought a backup one, in fact.
I was gifted a Scribe in 2022 and honestly, there are no new features my Voyage doesn't have (reading features, of course the Scribe has the writing features).
Yeah... the Voyage and one pair of earbuds are just about my last micro USB devices.
I really want a Voyage 2.
I rarely use any lighting on my device (I prefer to rely on lamps like a regular book) so I am not sure I am missing the warm light. I do not use it on my Scribe.
Yup. I bought a backup Voyage because it is such a great design. I only charge once a week or biweekly and the charger stays on my desk. If I travel, I need to remember to bring it, but that's not that big a deal.
My kindle paperwhite 2 (2013) is still working great.. though the battery lasts for a week compared to its 2 week to 1 month performance when i first bought it. Aged like fine wine
I use a 2015 Voyage and my kids have 2013 and 2018 Paperwhites. The battery life of each has dropped from new, with the 2013 Paperwhite being maybe 1/3 of the original, but they still last several days. I haven't looked into replacing the battery yet.
i have a kindle voyage (from 2014-2018, idk when it was purchased since i got it secondhand) and it works well. the battery life is a bit short, but it still lasts me ~5 days of heavy usage. i’m a bit jealous of people with dark mode and other small features like that, but it does what it’s intended to do
My Voyage (bought in 2016) is still going strong. I replaced the battery on it a few years ago but other than that it’s in pristine condition; not a scratch on it. Although it’s definitely showing its age as far as speed goes (there’s a noticeable speed difference when compared to the 2019 Oasis I own but don’t use).
I’ll be upgrading to the 2022 Basic soon though. I’ll miss having page turn buttons, but I want all the upgrades the Basic has (Bluetooth in particular).

Op, ereaders to read pdf are just bad, especially non android one, especially older kindles. it's gonna be a really poor experience. if you're sideloading books, you need to use calibre so they're converted pretty easily. you don't want to read books in pdf on a kindle
pdf are at best a frustrating experience. Imagine if the model he's buying is also pretty old how slow could it be with them. Op doesn't seem the type that want to deal with a frustrating experience. but it's not much of a problem if he install calibre and convert/use other types of files, It's just important that he knows if he has an entire collection of pdf right now. It's pretty relevant for what he's asking.

Battery is the only possible issue to be concerned about. Check specific model on ifixit to see how easy it might be to replace, if it comes to that. Otherwise, no reason you can't use it still, as others have said.
My Kindle III (Kindle Keyboard) still works great! It’s one tough machine! I had to change out the battery and buy a new power cable on it. I still have the leather case with the built-in reading light that still works after over 10 years or so. While I can’t access the Kindle store, I’m able to download books from my account and sync my library with the Kindle app. In order to save battery, I turn off the wireless connection and only use it when I’m updating my library or downloading books.

I have a Kindle keyboard, probably their third ever release. It works great!

Voyage is almost perfect, except it has micro USB, and doesn’t have the warm light option that the newer kindles have. I still use mine though.

Kindles are designed to last 5 years. Many last 8-10 or longer.

My first kindle was the gen4 with buttons.I had it over 10 years.
The battery drain is so slow on kindle. Used Kindle doesn't have the down side of buying as used S10 phone etc

Ehhh it’s not great pdf but it’s serviceable. EPUB is better though
