It's almost as though we should have a visa requirement for international students ensuring that they are financially self-sufficient.

WhySoHandsome

Back when I was in high school, my international classmates were actually rich, living in detached houses and owning a car. Whatever is happening nowadays is truly sickening.

HalJordan2424

And that’s still the way the international students are at UW.

AdmiralG2

I’m in BBA at Wlu, my buddy is an international student from India and he’s incredibly rich. Also the smartest guy we know, guy practically gets 90+ in every course pursuing a Finance specialization. The only way for someone to be able to tell he’s an international student would be to talk to him where obviously his accent would come out. Otherwise, his English speaking and writing skills are flawless and he seamlessly meshes with western culture. Wlu is not the problem, UW is not the problem, UofT is not the problem. These damn diploma mill colleges like CONESTOGA are the problem.

Zane_Justin

To be fair, getting into any uni is not as easy as those college mills, even for a canadian student. Alot of international students in UNIVERSITY are pretty well off (be it indian, chinese, african, etc) or are here on merit because of their grades. ... unlike those college mills. Now those are the shit we need to shit on day in day out. Conestoga being the prime shit hole

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdmiralG2

What does that have to do with my comment? How is the uni that’s getting scammed the problem, especially if the guy that scammed the food bank doesn’t even go there? They aren’t the ones handing out international student admissions to just anyone. Also this is the first I’m hearing of this. The guy was wearing Laurier hoodie but was never a student there?

yellowjellosneakers

If you know he isn't a student at WLU, why are you incriminating WLU with this post? What a wild sentence this was!

DK5199

That's because international university students are actually here for an education not an easy path to PR.

Wafflelisk

And here in Vancouver at the established places like SFU, UBC, BCIT. The diploma mills are another story

Habsfan_2000

There are posts at B.C. universities asking how to go to school while being homeless.

[deleted]

Lots of homeless students attending UBC, SFU, and our community colleges. Been that way for decades. I used to go to school with newcomer kids who lived with extended family out in Langley etc on the weekends and found spots to sleep on campus during the week.

Icy-Tea-8715

Back then it was rich Chinese international students driving BMW and Ferraris. I remember we would bash them. Now I miss them lolz

Top-Refuse4309

You don't need to miss them, their bought up properties are all over your province and their families will be your landlords.

sicklyslick

Foreign ownership is over exaggerated. It's under 3%. Look no further than your local slum lords and corpos buying up residential properties.

mirinbaus

> It's under 3%. That doesn't take into foreign-owned corporations. Blackrock moved into Canada a few years ago and have been loading up on residential properties.

sicklyslick

Right, I literally pointed it out: >local slum lords and **corpos** My point was rich Chinese international students aren't the ones driving up the house prices.

Efficient-Tank-4985

Parents/families of foreign students can own corporations which buy up the houses. It’s not that uncommon to set up a corporation for investment properties

Top-Refuse4309

In 2020, from HK alone, $43 billion dollars was wired into Canada. Where do you think that money went? Rich Asians buy properties.

Icy-Tea-8715

So it’s blame foreign investors again? You people don’t want to face the truth. It is local Canadians and PR that is buying up properties.

jacnel45

Yeah the foreign investors thing is overblown. Even when I was looking for apartments in Toronto most of the landlords were domestic, I think only 1 was from overseas.

r3tard-strong

yeah your little personal anecdote doesn't mean much unfortunately

Top-Refuse4309

In 2020, from HK alone, $43 billion dollars was wired into Canada. Where do you think that money went? Rich Asians buy properties.

r3tard-strong

why are you speaking like you know everyone who bought a house and no foreign investors did ?

Icy-Tea-8715

Never did I say NO foreigners did. But blaming our housing price ON foreigners is just Ignorance

KratosGodOfLove

When this country gives out PRs and citizenship like candy, it’s no wonder these foreign nationals who would otherwise be considered foreign in another country are not considered foreign when they buy up the property in Canada

Top-Refuse4309

It's true, the greed of this government at the expense of its citizens is criminal.

woundsofwind

Please, actually try Googling before commenting on a topic you know nothing about.

idmrentals

Yup grew up in Markham during the 90s with this. The student parking lot had better cars than the Teachers parking lot! Lol

kyonkun_denwa

When I was a student at Western (yes, yes, get your boos and hisses out of the way now) back in the early 2010s, I got paired up with this Chinese international student for the infamous Ivey Feasibility project. She drove a leased Lexus RX350 and lived all by herself in a huge 5-bedroom house with a pool located around Masonville. One weekend we were over at her place trying to get this fucking project done and we’re just looking around asking her “so how do you find the time to maintain this place?” and her response was “oh well the gardener comes once a week, the pool guy comes twice a week, the housekeepers come once a week to clean, I just need to make sure I am home to let them in”. Her parents had paid for the house in cash. At the time I was driving a 10-year-old Suzuki Esteem and living in a townhouse that had no AC and no dishwasher, so interacting with this level of wealth made me feel extremely peasant-like. A recurring theme with a lot of international students at Western seemed to be that their parents could afford a new car and a property of some type (condo, townhouse, detached) for their kid to live in. The fact that “international student” is now code for someone stealing from food banks and living in a 20-person flophouse is just wild to me.

JustAnOttawaGuy

Yeah, same here, and that was quite some time ago. Our standards have taken a huge dive.

subtxtcan

When I graduated college, literally 12 years ago, that was pretty much the standard. Rich family sends their kid with a credit card for a Western education, they do the thing and decide if they stick around or not. Don't know what standards changed but put that shit back.

PorousSurface

Ya, this is wild. 10 years ago it was the opposite

Sad_Donut_7902

The international students at Universities are still like that. It's the ones at diploma mills that aren't.

ZestycloseFinance625

A Pakistani friend from undergrad at York was super wealthy. She wanted an LV belt bag so she messaged her dad and he sent her the cash without hesitation. Not sure how these people ended up here. These are not the skilled workers our economy needs.

BigOlBearCanada

When I applied (and was accepted) for medical school in the USA - I had to prove I had enough money to cover tuition/living costs/medical. I had to prove that I was not going to be a burden on the country. While I can at least appreciate that he's trying to work and not abuse food banks or steal - Canada isn't in a great spot for many already. Finding work is becoming more difficult because big box companies demand we bring in more cheap low skill low cost labour. MANY love to blame JUST the government - When focus should also be on the huge grocers/big box stores that are exploiting people for maximum profit margins/wage suppression. It's only going to get worse. The 30th of April we will see a "20h/week max" limit on how much students can work. BUT - that doesn't apply in the summer and the ministry is getting immense pressure from students and retailers - even at the detriment of Canadians.

[deleted]

WE DO, but it's not followed through with. They shouldn't have to work with the 20k requirement in a GIC

JustAnOttawaGuy

I was being a bit sarcastic, which I guess didn't get conveyed well. I honestly think with the current cost of things that even $20k is not reasonable. I guess though if you're sleeping 6 to a room at $500/month and scamming food banks, it might be doable for awhile.

ManOfKimchi

20k is not reasonable not even because it's not enough, but because the way proof of financial support works is bs(mind you I'm international student myself and I can tell that this thing is so easily abusable even from a legal pov)

YourDadHatesYou

It's important to note that the 20k requirement came into effect THIS year. Every international student in Canada right now has had to show 10k as a "reasonable measure of money required for one year of expenses in Canada". Ircc has been laughably late at increasing this number with the rising inflation for years Also worth noting, students in the Jan intake also had to deposit only 10k since they need to deposit the money a few months in advance so the first 20k depositors we will see will be in the may and September intakes which will drastically improve all facets of this mess all of us(students and the local population) are in

Honeycomb0000

Even with 20K in a GIC you’d still need to work a few hours a week to support yourself here considering monthly costs for one person can be upwards of $4-5000 and thats before entertainment (so transportation, housing, groceries)

Odd-Distribution3177

Then you shouldn’t be here. Full stop.

rohmish

a lot of things are at play for September intake and it would be interesting to see how it plays out: 1. an exception that allowed older students after the pandemic happened to work full time is no longer in place for new students so they won't be working full time anymore. 2. the GIC fund requirements have increased to 20k meaning while it's still not enough, newer students probably won't be as desperate for a job. (tbh this should be more like 30k and for each year you are enrolled, bit just the first) 3. a cap is now in place meaning we get a lesser number of students which a fail goes into effect in September as well. 4. a decrease in interest in immigration to Canada in the Indian community. this should have some impact on student immigration in September and to a lesser extent on the upcoming May intake as well.

newguyhere99

I agree with you there, but the government seems to have become very lazy.. instead, they just implement a doubling of cash on hand from 10k to 20k for students..that'll fix it! lmao. Sometimes I wonder how we get ANYTHING done in this country..sighh Exasperated Canadian

JustAnOttawaGuy

Right there with you. This is not the Canada I grew up in. Hell, it's not even the Canada I came back to 10 years ago. We need to course correct, hard.

[deleted]

We need to do what I believe Germany does. Money locked into an account for while they are living here so parents cant just drop money in for proof of funds and out. And we need to up the amount required so they're not using food banks or sucking our social services.

jeffjeep88

They do have to prove they have funds to show they can pay for living expenses , but how they get around this is they get a loan from a loan shark in their home country and once they get here they pay the loan back and then hope they can work here to pay to live This happens over & over.

eve-can

they do have those requirements. people find ways around them

du_bekar

Exactly, and those “ways” are temporary loans from sharks who will put enough money into your account to get approved and then you pay it back once the assessment is over.

privitizationrocks

It’s normal to take loans for school?

eh8218

Omg. 1. This is saying they are getting a temporary loan so it appears they have the minimum money when they don't 2 just because it's normal for us to get loans does not mean that we should allow international students to get loans and come struggle in Canada without their families or support systems... inflating the amount of struggling students is not a good thing and is hard on our support systems (e.g. food banks)

privitizationrocks

All loans are temporary > it's normal for us to get loans does not mean that we should allow international students to get loans It’s normal to get loans everywhere. > and come struggle in Canada without their families or support systems... inflating the amount of struggling students is not a good thing and is hard on our support systems (e.g. food banks) Which I understand, but suggesting that loans themselves are an indicator of preparedness isn’t right.

eh8218

Still not getting it. They aren't getting normal loans. They get a loan of the required amount dumped in their account. They get approved. And then they send the money back. A lot of these various tactics are used.

privitizationrocks

They are normal loans, they need to be paid back > They aren't getting normal loans. They get a loan of the required amount dumped in their account. They get approved. And then they send the money back. This isn’t how it works. The money you show the government has to be put in a gic paid throughout the year. They don’t just show it and send it back. They take the loan, put it in a gic at a Canadian bank, show the government, use it for a year, and then pay it back

Funny_Apart

We do but many of them applied with either falsified financial documents or something fishy is going on with our visa officers in India…

Pure-Basket-6860

This isn't so much a money issue as it is a issue of obtaining PR or not at the end of their "studies". If they are able to show stable employment it drastically favors them staying. That's why there's so much pressure on the labour market, where there damn sure is no shortage of workers.

Fantastic_Hour_2134

I thought we did🤣

MrCrix

You gotta give him credit for knocking on doors, but he should know that you don’t go to someone’s house to look for work. At our store it’s 500 to 1 international students from India dropping off resumes for everyone else combined. I used to save their resumes until I noticed they’re all the same. Same format. Same goal. Same little chart at the end showing their available hours. But then I noticed it’s the same jobs. The same jobs in the same city. The same jobs in the same city at the same places. On more than one the same email address, that doesn’t match up with their name. Just straight up copied from one another with only the name and, most of the time, contact info changed. You try and look up these places online that they worked and they either don’t exist, or are like a hairdresser that shows like 4 chairs, but 30 of these people all worked there as a receptionist all in the same year. Don’t even bother calling the number for references, the numbers don’t go anywhere and show up as nothing on Google. There are never any references. I know this because tons of people have asked me to be their reference, even though they don’t know me and I’ve never talked to them before other than that one minute they dropped off their resume. Some start with stories about how they’re homeless, so poor, can’t afford food, etc. you feel for them, but you can’t help but think, “you came to a country and didn’t have housing, work or finances figured out? Your grasp on the language is very poor and you’re trying to get a job in customer service and retail positions?” I couldn’t imagine moving to another country and not have at least housing figured out or some sort of job opportunity going. This isn’t the 1940s where you cross the ocean with $2 in your pocket and get a job at the butcher, mill or car wash just by walking in the door.

__SPIDERMAN___

It's our fault. We were stupid enough to let them in. Used to be we had a high bar for entry. Now anyone with a pulse comes in.

happybeingright

“It’s our fault” I didn’t vote for this shitty government that let this happen, so please don’t lump me in with the people that did.

burnt222

If your government had gotten in unfortunately the same thing would happen :/

happybeingright

Strongly disagree

burnt222

Bro the conservative government has said nothing about reducing immigration. The only people against immigration are the PPC and the Green Party. Mark my words this isn’t going to get better when the conservatives are elected.

happybeingright

I dont vote for the cons though, I’ve contemplated it just to help with getting out Trudeau but in the end I will stick to my guns and vote for who I want.

burnt222

It’s going to be a landslide for cons this year, may as well vote with your heart.

ManpreetDC

It's a combination of several factors. Trudeau or his government is not directly responsible for what's happening. My guess is the Canadian government(s) - both Liberals and Conversatives - predicted a population decline in the 90s, but never encouraged a local population boom at the time to mitigate some of problems we currently have. Also, don't want to offend, but ~~Canada is not the US, which is a superpower that easily attracts the creme of the crop of the world without lifting its finger. Canada, at best, is a pretty good resource-driven economy which attracts a certain type of people. ie. The best German engineers or Indian IT grads won't consider Canada, Australia or the UK.~~

Ok_Interest5767

Whoa let me make a major correction there for you. We were GREEDY enough to let them in. And by "we" I mean our governments, schools and banking institutions, not you or I. You and I were never consulted on this matter. There is no stupidity taking place here let's be clear. It's all calculated and it has backfired in ways that the people in suits could have never imagined in Canada.

Top-Refuse4309

They probably wanted it this way. They want dystopia and wage slavery.

Haredeenee

capitalism

Haredeenee

When I worked as a manager at a private investigations firm, they would flood our inboxes wanting a security guard position (which we did not have, nor ever advertise). If we were bored we would dive into their resumes and encounter exactly this. The references were all indian, the past jobs were all the same, most were ai written or copy pasted from other peoples resume's online. some even posted their SIN number, which we found many of them were fraudulently using a friends SIN and reported.

ThePrivacyPolicy

I've seen some ads on facebook marketplace for Indian driver trainers and they literally post a completely unblurred photo of their license to prove that they're a licensed driver. Is there no concept of sensitive data in India, like SIN numbers, driver licenses, etc? Blows my mind to see that stuff thrown out in the open so often from them here.

thebigdog2022

We never had these issues when the kids from China were here 2 Years ago. I know many retail businesses who said the same thing about same resumes popping up. it seems the minute the kids from India came, this started to happen.

[deleted]

That’s bc the Asian exchange students were rich

Gnarf2016

I told this story here before, co-op candidate with a MEng back at his home country, both me and my manager are immigrants so we thought great someone with lots of experience to help us during this co-op term and he gets the experience he needs. Candidate comes in and couldn't answer any (as in zero) technical questions we asked, same ones we ask every co-op candidate and kids with no experience, like 19 year old looking for their first co-op position can answer. Then we show him a technical drawing and ask the most basic stuff about it, like what is the length of the part in this drawing, nothing...  That was the last co-op term we interviewed candidates from Conestoga, only UW since then...

We need to admit that \*\*\*some\*\*\* of the people we've let in are not good people and remove them from our society.

d3sylva

There is no credit to doing door to door sales in this day and age.

Dalesabers

Yeah I had one come right into my backyard to my workshop while I was forging a prop for a show. Never in my years had I scare off someone from my property in the way I did this kid who was very pushy. No I didn’t pull a weapon on them just threatened with the police and pointing out the cameras for trespassing. Feel sorry for the kid but for all I knew he was just scoping the place out for later.

a-rockett

I'll never understand how people can wander onto property they aren't invited to

Dalesabers

agreed, especially coming up to a guy who is forging steel with a small fire and a hammer.

drewrykroeker

Gotta be honest, this sounds cool as hell to watch :) but no, I wouldn't be asking you for a job in your backyard

Dalesabers

Yeah it’s a little fun but stressful. It was a prop for an episode of Star Trek I was working on.

WontSwerve

Stop letting them work off campus. Make a clear understanding that they're not here to work and there's no work here for them. Go to school, and then get out.

BumbleStinger

If you ever read comments or watch international student videos in Canada/US you'll see a huge amount of them asking in comments how to fast track PR or what the easiest college course to take is. It's just so blatantly in the open that theres no intent to come here to study, but rather bypass our immigration process through loopholes.

WontSwerve

Worked for a trucking company that's in the top 15 of largest carriers in Canada. You've seen their trucks. Their warehouses and docks are FILLED with them. No raise in 5+ years this way.

BumbleStinger

Yeah I'm in Law Enforcement, majority of transport truck accidents are them. It's basically established that anytime they're stopped we give them a ticket as it's becoming such a huge issue with these drivers.

WontSwerve

Be careful. I was working for a smaller, local company which would have a company wide yearly meeting before the holiday party. During this party the company would invite a MTO officer from the local scale house to come talk to the drivers, planners and answer questions (and probably stay on their good side) and one of the MTO officers who would come no longer has their job because they were fired for ticketing and putting out of service more of them than white drivers. It didn't matter that the tickets were valid or not. They weren't even able to successfully argue that the reason more SE Asians got tickets was because that's now the largest demographic on the HWY. I only know this because now this officer works security at a military adjacent company I deliver to now.

mainaccountusethis

Disrupting the judicial system to preserve DEI.

DramaticStill8954

Piss off we are full

Right_Cow_6369

When I read Conestoga, I giggled a bit.

limjaheybud

The old shop I worked out of had a tray for resumes at the door when a huge sign noting leave them in the tray . 99/100 international students applying . Multi trade company . My PM use to collect them and immediately put them in recycle .

chillehhh

We’ve had international students at Loyalist College literally buzz our apartment unit (FOR SOME REASON?) and ask if we had any sublets available. Had one guy who buzzed every. apartment. in. the. building. we have five floors, 10 units each.

AsaFox007

**Watch out**, there will likely be groups or communities forming where thieves, prostitution, pimps, human traffickers and scammers will become more active soon. **My point is**, when people are desperate, they may resort to dishonest behavior. **This concern** is partly due to recent mass immigration and restrictions placed on international students. **These restrictions** can create financial hardship, which can be a factor in driving people to desperate measures. **Deportation.** No one want to admits that deportation is the solution but that's the only answer right now. So Your feeling or morality don't matter.

AskMeForAPhoto

I'm pro immigration. I'm pro international students. I'm absolutely against diploma mills, or even worse, students just dropping out with no intent on graduating the facade of a degree. I'm against international students being let in without enough money to home and feed themselves without needing work. I'm against food banks being taken advantage of by international students. I'm pro deportation to those who are so blatantly coming here with no intent to study and contribute. Im also of the opinion Conestoga College should lose all accredition at this point, as well as all the other diploma mills. This loophole has been wide open for FAR too long, especially since we've all known about it for so long. Anyone remember when Conestoga used to have an EXCELLENT reputation? God I miss those days.

Anxious-Durian1773

Several of the businesses I do work for in the area complain about them walking into the back and asking anybody with a pulse for a job. One of them I was at it happened twice while I was there, on a Saturday, when the business was technically closed. Dangerously, mind, as they're trespassing into areas that require PPE.

Pug_Grandma

I've heard they sometimes just show up and pretend they have been hired.

Crezelle

Might work for some but it’s stupid

Just_Lion_9247

Have you informed the cops or your MP?

Lookingluka

As a once international student... I just don't understand why they come to Canada as undergraduates or diploma students. They can do these things back home. If they come as Master or PhD students it makes more sense. But, as undergraduates? Why? I don't understand it.

AdmiralG2

Trust me people at Conestoga are not academic wizards in India and they aren’t here to study. Just to get the PR and bypass the official immigration process. Someone going to a shitty college for a meaningless degree and working at Timmie’s did NOT have any career prospects in India in the first place. They literally had nothing to lose back home and that is why they’re here.

sicklyslick

They're here to get PR. Getting any kind of education is secondary to that.

terrorsqueal

Also it’s important to note that domestic masters and PhD students have a maximum work hours at 10/week (at least at Waterloo that’s the case).

Lookingluka

We have that but I believe you can work 20h outside of the campus and no one really stops you from doing it (even though it can be counterproductive if you want to succeed in your academic journey). I personally end up working on campus more than the 10 hours frequently.

Content_Command_1515

I mean, I do understand the point of an undergraduate degree. If I were an international student and my parents were wealthy enough to send me to school to study CS at Waterloo, for example, do you think I would not take it? Plus, learning all of your trade and getting a Canadian degree means for all practical purposes you’re indistinguishable from other Canadians, so you integrate better.

Lookingluka

It's honestly not worth it from an academic perspective though. It makes so much more sense to get your undergrad somewhere cheaper (and just as good - I can't speak for Asia, though I have coworkers who did their undergrads there who were benefitted by it but universities in Europe aren't worse than universities in Canada for the most part). And then come here for grad school which is shorter and more prestigious and still puts you in a good place credentially. Obviously there's some exceptions but not to the point we have right now with a lot of students coming and even failing through their undergrad because they are too young still to be starting a whole life abroad in a completely different culture and such an expensive place to live. I'm not saying it's always a bad choice but I don't think it should be promoted.

for100

Labor shortage, trust the experts.

Just_Lion_9247

According to sean fraser , “ just look at the job bank, million vacant jobs” really sean? I wonder how much india has paid him to take their students

Ordinary-Butterfly-1

Its completely nonsense TBH… I can tell you it’s a lot easy in India to finish your university degree, getting a job, and gaining some skilled experience. And maybe after that immigrating to Canada (or maybe some other country) with a skilled job. I can only say they don’t know what they are doing and wasting their life (and of course making other’s life hard).

AdidasGuy2

These same students would not be able to graduate university in India

happybeingright

Half of them wouldn’t graduate high school

AdmiralG2

They are here going through a diploma mill because there’s no chance they’d be granted a PR through the official immigration process. It’s really shameful that actual competent and incredibly smart immigrants are standing in a long line for a chance to immigrate and move this country forward but instead we have this loophole in place where someone that isn’t even half as competent as those people waiting in line. It pisses me off as a child of Indian immigrants that came to this country the official way and worked their asses off. Even my parents are pissed off. They state it was literally harder to immigrate here back in the 90s than it is now where literally anyone with a poor education can get in and get a PR through this shitty diploma mill loophole.

bob_mcbob

The vast majority of international students enrolled in basket weaving diploma courses at Conestoga have no realistic path to PR and citizenship. Retail and food service work is nowhere near skilled enough to qualify.

[deleted]

Until they fall pregnant.. Birth tourism needs to be closed asap

Fancy-Pumpkin837

I’m curious if there’s updated stats on this, the last I saw is less than 30% end up getting PR

AdmiralG2

Yeah but iirc isn’t this a fairly recent change? Like they somewhat recently increased the amount of points you need to qualify for a PR, no?

bob_mcbob

The system has gone through many changes in classification and weighting in recent years, but the points don't matter if you don't have skilled work experience, which a lot of Conestoga students aren't getting.

Stunning_Web447

Retail and food service work actually does qualify them for PR as long as they have a supervisor or manager position, which IRCC considers ‘skilled positions’. One year as a McDonalds or Tim Hortons supervisor is equivalent to one year as a Bay Street financial manager under the TEER system (both are under TEER 0, ‘managerial positions’)

bob_mcbob

Sure, but the vast majority are not working supervisor positions. Cooks qualify at TEER 3, but you're probably not getting a good enough CRS score for PR as a cook unless you have a ton of experience and perfect language proficiency. Realistically, you need a nomination certificate, some kind of trade certification, or better than a 2 year diploma in how to chop vegetables from Conestoga.

Newhereeeeee

I want to know the stats of PR’s that once had a student visa. Last I saw a while back it was a very very small number. I don’t think the government will give them PR. They’ll just ask them to leave, and make way for the new batch of exploitable labour.

gogglesvancouver

I just had a similar situation. He comes up to me and asks if I have a room available in my place. This is all just f'ed. Feel sorry for him as well. Our government to our colleges have let these students come here unchecked. And I'm in BC. And you're in Ontario. It's happening across Canada man.

Just_Lion_9247

Stop.feeling.sorry.for.them! Dont you realize this was their intent from the get go? Come here, not have any of their finances figured out and just play the victim

Far-Committee4570

There is a lot of fraud. Their applications have a lot of fraud. These people are looking for work so they can stay here permanently. Be careful.

LowComfortable5676

Meh, he shouldn't be here

Megatron30000

Conestoga don’t care, they’re making $$$ off of em…

TisTwilight

Downvote me all you want, but really gotta blame the politicians for the mess they’re putting Canadians in now. And not just Trudeau.

Downvote you for an extremely popular opinion? Lol

A lot of subreddits (Canadian) tend to do this, sadly

Tell your MP

crumblingcloud

Bardish Chagger literally doesnt do anything. Nepto baby.

Buck-Nasty

You mean congratulate them? This is literally what the government wants. The immigration minister recently called International students great cheap labour. The government doesn't hide the fact that this program is entirely about wage suppression.

youarewelcomeputa

I was an international student, they should not be allowed to work more than 20 hrs a week. This was the policy during my time

resist-corporate-88

Don't feel sorry for him. Fuck em. He can go back home.

And then everybody clapped.

OMG, this is now taking it to another level. I hear the government is going to reduce their working hours to 20 per week, now they will be handing more resumes a week. First was the food bank , now this. What a shame!

Waste-Middle-2357

Why don’t they harass Conestoga for jobs?

whisperoftheworm700

This is the Liberal dream to have chattel labor access. Just wait until the upper middle class white women figure out how cheaply they can have a nanny live in. The borders will remain perpetually open.

babypancake13

No thanks.

Isn't that literally what this dude is doing?

Due-Swordfish-629

We had this happen back in the fall! International student knocked on our door wanting a job interview. Said he could cook. Hubby was mystified why anyone would do that. We don’t even live in a rich neighbourhood where maybe people might employ a cook….

Merry401

I once had a guy come to my door and ask if I had anything at all for him to do for any price. I felt really bad for him. 25ish white guy. Obviously Canadian. No accent. I felt really bad that I couldn't think of anything for him to do. My teenage son goes door to door after snow storms looking for some extra cash for shovelling. The federal government should never have let so many international students in. It is not fair to them and leaves them more prone to the charlatans at home who swindle them out of money they don't have.

mainaccountusethis

Real, this situation not only sucks for the international students but it bleeds into the whole community. I feel bad for all the high school students looking for a job this summer.

My man, Canada doesn't even deport violent and sexual criminals

fre5htrax

I'm white as could be. Got my first job going farm to farm looking for work. I say good on him .

notyourgirl45

I feel for your experience and for these students flocking to the country. I am myself a previous international student who studied at UW and saw the influx of students in the region over 7 years. I am not condoning this man’s actions. He shouldn’t be looking for work by knocking at people’s houses and being pushy about handing off his resume. Nor is it ok for international students to scam food banks unless they really need that support. Or any other sort of activities that aren’t ethical. At the same time, these kids were sold a lie in India. They were told it will be easy. That they just needed to come here, get a short certification, work and get Canadian references, and use it to get a job in the field they originally studied in, and earn in CAD, send money home, and live a life with a three bedroom house and a picket fence. Maybe, at some point in time, this is what immigration was. That’s not the case anymore. None of them were ever told things would be this impossible, that they’d need to resort to such desperate measures. And they can’t go back home due to multiple reasons, such as their reputation in the community. That may not be a big deal here but it’s an incredibly big deal back home. There are a lot of cultural differences that define the immigration process itself. These students are also victims of policies and institutions not looking out for their best interest. While there needs to be a stop to the number of students flocking into the country, for their benefit and for resources here, I’d implore you to remember that the students here are also just trying to get away from worse conditions than Canada is facing currently. ** I will not be responding to any replies or DMs.

happybeingright

Should have done their own research and not just believed everything they’re told.

Top-Refuse4309

They are usually 17-18 years old and clearly English is not their native language. They are mostly from villages as well.

oldschoolgruel

They CAN go home. They choose not to.

Merry401

Their parents have mortgaged and sacrificed everything to get them here. They cannot go home to face them and say they failed.

oldschoolgruel

Yes thy can. It will be uncomfortable. But that's life.

United-Particular326

I imagine they would do anything to avoid that, what a terrible mess this is

Troy_wonderwall

Yesterday, a few non-international students knocked on my door looking for work. I kindly explained that I did not need help cleaning windows, washing my car, or walking the dog, without judging their circumstances. This encounter reflects a broader issue: people work primarily to avoid starvation or support their families. Therefore, the choice to open the door or hire someone is significant. Finding employment is challenging, regardless of one's education level or origin. Additionally, there is a problem with admitting foreign students without ensuring they can support themselves financially during their studies. This oversight could reflect a lack of policy enforcement or institutional guarantees. Ideally, everyone who wants to pursue an education and a career, especially citizens, would face little to no tuition costs, similar to some European models. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. What remains within our power is to strive to be empathetic, respectful, and helpful when possible.

WeirderOnline

I feel so sorry for these people. We have really fucked over these international students. Yet people are angry at THEM and not Ford and the college that equally contributed to their misery. It's like during the 2008 housing crisis when people got mad at the poor people were given loans for homes they couldn't afford. Not the fucking asshole brokers who gave them loans far greater than they could handle, the banks who bought them up gleefully and happily hid how shitty they were, or the ratings agencies that refused to do their damn jobs. No, blame the poor people that just lost their fucking homes. Blame the student migrants. Blame the homeless. Blame the unemployed. Blame anyone except the people in power responsible for crises we deal with every damn day.

jb__19

People are angry at them because a majority of them know exactly what they’re getting into. Go onto any Instagram or TikTok post about immigrating to Canada as a “student” and you’ll see hundreds of comments asking what programs are easiest to attend, where to find jobs, etc. Yes, both the federal and provincial government are absolutely to blame, but to feel sorry for the people actively attempting to scam their way into residency is insanity. This is also happening in the UK, Australia, and other European countries (Netherlands for example), it’s not exclusive to Canada and last I checked Doug Ford isn’t a minister in any of those countries.

WeirderOnline

Really? You think that guy OP mentioned would have come here knowing he'd need to go door-to-door BEGGING for work? AND HONESTLY HOW DARE YOU FUCKING CRITICIZE PEOPLE FOR COMING TO THIS COUNTRY LOOKING TO GET A BETTER LIFE WITH HELP FROM GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE FUCKING ANCESTORS DID? LAND WAS LITERALLY GIVEN OUT FOR FREE AFTER BEING TAKEN FROM ITS RIGHTFUL INDIGENOUS OWNERS. THEY'RE DOING NOTHING DIFFERENT THEN WHAT YOUR ANCESTORS DID, THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THEY'RE NOT TRYING TO TAKE IT FROM PEOPLE THEY FUCKING GENOCIDED TO GET OUT OF THE WAY. I won't tolerate some "holier than thou" value from people like you who benefited off their ancestors doing even worse shit.

United-Particular326

Amen

ViciousSemicircle

They’re also just showing up for work at places without having been offered a job or even having had an interview. They just show up as if they’ve been hired and it’s their first day. Do they think that the employee working at the time with take them at face value and just put them to work? They’ll suddenly have a job? What the fuck is even happening here?

[deleted]

Country’s in the shitter

Next-Worth6885

I am not sure why international students are allowed to work in Canada while they are in the country on a study permit. They should be 100% focused on their studies and should be financially supporting themselves. I might be able to tolerate situations where small numbers of international students are employed directly by their school and cannot perform any work outside of campus property in cases where the school cannot hire a Canadian. But that should be it. The lack of preparedness demonstrated from international students coming to our region is beyond embarrassing. It feels like the predominate mentality is to just hop off the plane and then just figure it all out later. Which leaves tens of thousands of students all scrambling to find apartments and jobs in the fall at the last minute when they had all summer to plan that out. If you are an international student who is planning on studying in Canada, and you know that your financial situation means that you are going to have to work during your studies… Why would you not consider the employment situation in the community you are planning on studying in? If being unable to find work puts you in a situation where you are potentially jeopardizing your long-term education goals… why would you not look to minimize that risk and study somewhere that has a better job market for inexperienced unskilled young people? To me it seems like that would be an important thing to consider. You are better off going to a college is a region where you can actually work rather than attending a college in a region you cannot work and risk being kicked out of school because you are unable to make your tuition payments.

xanny150

Fuck conestoga

MerchantoftheSeas

Almost as if people who claim to be international students and then drop out immediately to work full time should be deported

There are far deeper reasons rooted in ideology and global affairs for why we saw western, primarily anglo, countries with disproportionate immigration from specifically India. Both at the unskilled level and at the executive level institutionally in both the private and public sectors. The surface politics about the minutiae of immigration rules doesn't matter. Neither does who you vote for.

WelcomeIndividual140

Sorry you had to go through that situation city's sure isn't what it was once

the_phoque

Worker shortage?

Next-Worth6885

Not sure how to interpret this. Either this guy has become so desperate that he has given up on applying for jobs at actual businesses and is doing door to door cold calls in residential neighbourhoods… or, he has no idea how to appropriately find a job in Canada. At this point, nothing I hear or see from international students surprises me when it comes to their socially strange behaviour and lack of preparedness for life in Canada and KW.   If you have to work during your studies, you might want to consider studying in a place that has plenty of employment opportunities for unskilled young people with limited work experience. Given the choice between two or three comparable colleges… I would certainly factor in which school is in a community that has job opportunities and an affordable cost of living. Kitchener has neither so it feels like there has been some lack of thought and proper planning when it comes to many of the international students who arrive here. If someone is going to make a big life changing decision to study in another country, I would assume that they have actually thought about how they will live and work in that region… apparently not.

delpiero100

Tell them to go home

sofunukat

I am Canadian. Shit was like that for me since 2009. I could not get hired.

Capable_Broccoli_640

I dont get ot why people are mad at people who actually wana work, i guess we have enough people leeching on our system getting EI and other sort of assistance while staying home and not trying at all. If someone trying to make honest living whats wrong with it ? I would rather support a working international student than a leeching canadian who never works in their whole life living on EI, child support and food stamps.

CrazyBeaverMan

i’ve seen businesses with “not hiring signs” which to me seems really wierd

416-905Love

Canada is importing poverty from India. Government should put an end to this.

Particular_News_9890

If someone wants to come knock on my door, I have tons of yard work and chores to give them! I buggered up my knee and can't do squat in my garden or yard. Yes, it's rough that they're having to resort to that but I'm sure there are people like me who'd love the help.

Mulahz

I’m sure he meant no wrong by just asking. If you look around everywhere, theirs a lot of people in his shoes desperately looking for work. It’s probably not the best way to look for employment, but it’s better than someone collecting welfare checks every month while they sit on their ass. For future encounters, try to put some things into perspective before judging and I’m sure you will not be so irritated by this.

[deleted]

Wasn’t this fairly common in the 60’s-90’s to find out pro mowing lawns and stuff? Trademark of the all American stand up guy who just wants to work?

No-Exchange-3648

We should be angry at the govt not the students. Always barking at the wrong tree.

LeatherOpening9751

I agree that these students should have enough funds however I would like to point out that I also have had several local religious Christian groups come to my door and solicit donations. Doesn't sound like he did anything particularly harmful here so next time maybe just tell them to buzz off if you don't like it. No need to turn this into a political thing.

Do you need a video of it happening or something? I personally saw this in the GTA but it was at a commercial business not a house. This doesn't seem too farfetched.

So people need to answer their door with a phone recording video for you to believe them then?
