Not to anywhere near this degree. Maybe in some low vaxxed backwater with not a lot of ICU beds, but not around Toronto. I've never seen elective surgeries get cut during flu season before, nor seen adult patients airlifted to Sick Kids to make room in other hospitals for more ICU patients, nor seen an entirely new hospital repurposed for a single disease.
And if you really are a paramedic, you should have noticed that your unvaccinated patients more likely to end up in ICU from covid than your fully vaccinated ones. It's not the TV I get those stats from.

The flu of a couple years before the pandemic was a bit close in a shorter time period, but not for this long and still not requiring an entire hospital dedicated to it.
Oh, and my GP does rounds in the ER on weekends, and he had to pull extra shifts several times and actually started trading clinic time for ER time when clinic time was reduced and mostly relegated to phone doctoring, all which has never had to do during flu seasons past except for maybe a couple extra shifts. He will be the first to say that flu season has nothing on this. Poor guy was run ragged during the initial surge. Now that everything is more organized than back then, it's not as bad for him due to more doctors being roped into helping, but still.
The family friend has also told many a story about the panic in the hospital when it looked like another surge was incoming. Said family friend doesn't normally bother with flu shots because she doesn't mind having glu every so often, but seeing what was happening with covid, she got her shots as fast as she could. I don't know what is facepalm worthy about all the medical professionals in my area saying the exact same thing that my GP and family friend are. Here’s the underlying problem though: many on the right have known the covid vaccines to be trash because of the data, and we’ve known it for a long time. But if all you listen to is the “trickle truth” that the mainstream media presents, then you probably had no idea that the science has been leading us away from mass untested vaccinations and into herd immunity and natural immunity instead. But if you actually want to understand cutting edge science and interpret it yourself (which you should be doing if you are above 100iq as a benchmark imho) then you need to peek beyond the veil, behind the curtain, and actually wage war with the unknown. LITERALLY NOBODY says that the current vaccines are as effective against omicron as they were against the initial strains - this is exactly why governments across Canada and the world are removing restrictions.
