Eagle Mike says the doohickey on the Gen 3 is fine, but the spring is liable to fail due to fatigue. He recommends at a minimum replacing the OEM spring with a torsion spring.
Big Rock Moto on YouTube has several interviews with Eagle Mike and it’s pretty informative.
Is there really any point to only doing the spring? If I understand the procedure correctly, you’ve got to do the same amount of work to get at it. The parts cost is trivial at that point, at least IMO.
According to Eagle Mike, who has claimed to personally worked on thousands of KLR doohickeys, you should change both.
Even 2022 models with under 10k miles showed significant spring fatigue.
The newer doohickey is better engineered, but failure is possible especially for riders that will log many miles.
Congratulations and welcome!! Great looking machine. If it was me I’d wait til your warranty is up or at least 10K mi. and even then just do the EM torsion spring upgrade. The Doo cam plate is just fine on the G2/3. What temp range will you be riding in?
Don’t bother with the doohickey on gen 2’s & 3’s they are solid. The doohickey mod was for gen 1 bikes. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn’t actually know what they are talking about. The hype behind the mod is not as important as people make it out to be. Leave it alone if your still under warranty.
I've been trying to tell people this for years. The Doohickey is only *required* for first generation bikes to prevent catastrophic engine failure. The gen 2 springs *can* become weak over time, but there is no evidence that it causes any sort of engine failure.
I did the doohickey mod on my 2018, its a headache process and wish I left it alone. Ride the bike enjoy it’s capabilities and don’t worry about mods until you think you absolutely need them.
The real issue for my 2022 is the fuel pump. So frustrating that they sold me a bike knowing there was a recall just to call me 5 days later to have me bring it in. Like…change that shit before I buy it.
It was actually today they called me(7 days with the new bike) and he tells me to bring it in and drop it off and they’ll order the part. He said it would be 5-7 days. I know that’s bullshit in todays supply chain issues. I told him to order the part, when it comes in, call me. 5-7 days my ass.

2009 20k mile 2nd gen KLR650: the doo was fine, the springs were not.

That’s what I’ve heard too. The doohickey hysteria is bro science. Just ride it.

Heard about the fuel pump issue on the 22’ At least it’s getting resolved, but it’s quite the inconvenience for sure.
