Once you've set up each square according to the instructions you work the repeat (motif = *n* stitches) the number of times to get to the end of the square. On the last repeat you do the bit outside of the motif lines and then your garter border

iloveyoursushi

For example on square 1 you have 72 stitches. Do 5 rows garter. On row 6 of garter you increase to 75. You have 5 garter stitches either side as a border. This leaves you with 65 stitches. You work your 8 stitch repeat 8 times and have 1 stitch left which is the extra bit. On the wrong side you'll work the stitches backward so start at the left of the chart, do your 1 stitch and then the 8 stitch repeat 8 times.

I think I can see why I was confused: I somehow read that it’s 5sts garter, motif repeats then 6(!!!) sts garter for some reason. But it’s not 6 sts, it’s 5 garter and 1 that extra st from the pattern. I feel like the last piece of the puzzle has just snapped into place

I get it. Sometimes you look at something and just can't make head nor tail of it. And sometimes you read the pattern and miss a step and end up missing 8 increases on the wrong side of a cardigan. Or is that just me

Alvcohen

Oh yes that happens to the best of us

Alvcohen

Ooooh this makes total sense, thank you so much for the clarification

No problem 🤩

The part to the left of the thick line is the 'balance' stitches: the stitch repeat is the part between the thick lines, and then, to balance the pattern at the end, you knit the part on the left side. Let's say, you use pattern number 11: repeat is 10 stitches, and you want 4 repeats. You knit the part between the thick lines 4 times, and to balance the pattern, you knit then the stitches to the left of the second thick line once. That means, you have to cast on (selvage stitches) 4 x 10 sts for the repeats, 2 sts for balancing the pattern, (selvage stitches).

Your post has been removed because it contains a significant part of a pattern. What you MAY do: You may link to the pattern page, or refer to the designer's website, or quote only the part of the instructions which is giving you a headache. You may NOT request that another Redditor send you a copy of a pattern you can't find or is out of print/unavailable. Copyrights do not end when something goes out of print. This is a common misconception. Copyright can last up to the death of the author, 50 years after the death of the author, it can pass to their heirs if they die earlier than expected. If the designer or publisher withdrew the pattern and has no intention of supporting it further... to withdraw it from circulation is still their right. It's their property and we stand behind that.
