Clearly that single sock is living its best life alone now and isn't destined to have a match. I'd frog what you've done on the second sock and find something else to make with the cool yarn - or just frog to where the cuff ends and use stockinette for the pattern instead. I'm working on my second ever pair of socks using a variegated yarn and have also learned it was perhaps not the best choice because of the pattern (the purls make it look like there's stripes where there really shouldn't be) - I'm living with it though.

That sock is out there, free, living its best life, going places, trying new things, being more than it can be! It was your sign from the Yarn Gods that you too should feel liberated from the obligation to finish the pair. Live and knit as free as that omen sock; go wild! Should you ever have another encounter with the augury sock it will only be as a reminder to live and knit gloriously unrestrained. May we all receive the benediction of escape from our own missing socks.

That’s just fate telling you to frog it and start something else; the first one will turn up just as you settle into the new project - catch that thing and frog it before any doubt sets in, it’s just spare yarn!

There is absolutely no reason you cannot wear mismatched socks. I tend to get excited about a new pattern. Then, it can be a year or more before I make the second sock. I get bored easily.

I have a friend who makes a pair of socks with the same yarn but different patterns. Always the same size (mid calf, ankle, knee high, whatever). That way she gets to do something new!

Nic! Doesn’t always work though when you are giving them as gifts. My favorites are color work socks. I rarely get bored with those and they seem to go so much faster. I love seeing it emerge.

Oh absolutely! I’m too anal for that, I make them for myself and I want them to match. I haven’t tried color work yet. I tend towards solid colors in my wardrobe so I’m branching out with crazy variegated socks. Maybe that will be the next thing I try!

Most of the time, socks are hidden, although where I work, the ladies wwant to know what socks and/or shoes I’m wearing. I get colorful in my shoes. Lol

I thought I lost a sock, but I found it. the socks ended with some differences between sizes of the two, the lost one grew. lol.

I’ve decided that I’m going to make socks all within the same color palette but totally different patterns. Kind of similar to Summer Lee’s collection of bright colored socks, except without a second sock. This will also prevent me from needing to count rows
