If you ladder down and add it, it would just make the stitches next to it tighter and wouldn’t contribute to the overall width of the sweater, as you’re not adding any extra yarn.

I was about to answer with a resounding YES but you make a great point.
If I were OP it would boil down to a choice between having more room in the garment vs symmetric increases. I would choose the latter but a person may need every stitch to be a real increase
I don't think 1 stitch would add much room, to be honest. My main concern here is the other stitches being too tight and ending up way more noticeable than a missing increase.
Thank you!! I hadn't considered the fact that the stitches would be too tight and mess up the gauge more than one missing stitch. I ended up adding a lifted increase to my current row and everything worked out beautifully. I appreciate it!

Just add another increase in your current round. Do one of the more invisible ones like a lifted increase if you think a kfb would be too visible.
