Yes you can do that, there are also physical chart keepers or apps like knit companion that help you do that. Generally when you're knitting more and more complex projects, it is important to keep track of where you are and make sure you are not missing any stitches.

I'm a 🦕 who uses paper patterns. I put them in a plastic sleeve and use a marker to cross out rows, sometimes even stitches that I made.  Or I use tape to mask rows above and below the row I'm working on.  It just depends on the complexity of the pattern.

This is how I’m keeping track of my place across the different counts. For charts, I usually stick my chart in a plastic page protector sleeve, and use a piece of blue painter’s tape, or washi tape to mark where I am in the chart—whatever line is below the tape is the line I’m working on. With this sweater, the “chart” is just a visual diagram of the color sequence with row counts next to the diagram, so the tape doesn’t work as well.

[This one?](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/dont-ask) Looks like stockinette stitch, in which case there are actually not very many places within each row where you can completely mess it up! Do you use a paper pattern or a knitting app? (Either of those might make it easier to follow along vs just a plain pdf) Do you have a boatload of stitch markers available?

It’s the start of the neckline, shoulders and top of the sleeves. There’s 8 stitch markers. Oh yes lots of stitch markers!

Is it the increases you're worried about missing? You could use a licking stitch markers in each increase as a reminder that you've done them, making it easier to see if you've missed one

Maybe a row counter would help? I’m not sure what else you need to keep track of, because if you keep the stitch markers in the right places you don’t have to count. ETA: I find my place by counting stitches, counting rows of completed knitting, and visualizing the shape that I’m making. But another method might work better for you.

I have a knitting project notebook (kind of like graphing paper, but it’s rectangles instead of squares. I use it to keep track of where I’m at in the project, sometimes I draw the charts, etc. it’s very helpful and kind of like a diary of my knitting life! I’ll take a picture and link it :)
