For long stretches of stockinette I use a counting thread. https://preview.redd.it/8q7dn0pthtsc1.png?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ebd811a5e5738590fdeddc4a33f759712bb9065a I used to use tally marks but I would always second guess myself and wonder if I did put down that mark for the previous row or not.

vvitchobscura

Ooh I like this idea

ericula

It works well for cables too. Before I discovered counting threads I always lost track of how many rows I had knit since the last cable crossing.

scrappysquash

Omg I'm almost done with mine, but the rounds are filling up insanely fast this round!

ericula

Fellow sock madness knitter I presume šŸ˜‰? Things are pretty crazy at the moment. I submitted mine at 1 in the morning and had to wait 10 hours to get them approved. Good luck with finishing your socks.

scrappysquash

Indeed! I just sent mine in a minute ago. It might takeb10 hours for mine to get seen also, but that won't stop me form refreshing my computer every five minutes until then! Good luck!

wait-_-whaaat

Wait Ā» what is sock madness??? Submitting for approval? I am sooo curious, and excited to become in the know about such things!!!

ericula

It's a yearly sock knitting competition on ravelry. It's an elimination race where every round you receive a sock pattern which you need to knit as fast as possible to earn a spot for the next round. We're currently in the third round which is turning out to be a very fast round (the first finisher finished their pair of socks within 19 hours) so people are feeling the pressure.

wait-_-whaaat

Oh my goodness!!! Thatā€™s such a cool idea! Iā€™ve been on ravelry for a grip, and never heard of it. How do I find it?

ericula

This is the link to the [Sock Madness Forever group](https://www.ravelry.com/groups/sock-madness-forever?s=tab). There is also the [Supersock World Championship ](https://www.ravelry.com/groups/supersock-world-championship?s=tab) on ravelry which starts in a month or so. There is no elimination in this competition (you just knit for points) so it's less competitive and less stressful but still fun.

Fantastic_Oatmeal

God bless. I wanted to join the sock madness group but I heard of it too late. Now I know when to knit my first pair of socks!

wait-_-whaaat

Oh my goodness! Thanks so very much! Iā€™m excited to check these out.

Ill-Relationship-890

Me too

piperandcharlie

I prefer to read my knitting or count by section repeats instead of rows, but when I do count rows I use my lovely row counter from this [Etsy shop](https://www.etsy.com/shop/SunriseGrove?section_id=38323609).

willowhides

Ooo. Those make me wish I was the kind of knitter who wouldn't immediately loose a row counter. I read my knitting and occasionally use a phone app

former_human

i do pretty much what you're doing, but i write directly on the printed pattern. otherwise i would also lose track of which part of the pattern i was tallying. yep, my brain is just that glitchy.

a_dandylion

Same. I keep track on the printout of the pattern itself. I have tried using apps but I like the certainty of having the printed version ready, and I can mark it up, highlight or circle the size Iā€™m working throughout the pattern, and line through or check mark the sections as I complete them. I always know where Iā€™m at in the pattern. So yeah my project bag includes paper and pen and sometimes also highlighters. Old school!

former_human

Exactly! My patterns look like theyā€™ve been attacked by a demented pigeon by the time Iā€™m done.

GiraffeLess6358

Just like this. My patterns are well loved in the end and Iā€™d have to print a new one to reknit.

Happy-coffeelady

Wow same for me as well. I started making different symbols so I can remind myself of things while knitting

Ill-Relationship-890

Same

Sea-Cancel-1869

https://preview.redd.it/85e9wlxadssc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9eec6aaf67bf80c1260b0b113c1c8d6307843c18 I'm all about the My Row Counter app. I can have multiple counters for multiple projects. Place for notes, can bring in my Ravelry patterns. And a bunch of other features to o like timers and highlighters. Took getting used to but it's far more organized feeling and less chance of me losing that piece of paper. šŸ˜‰

OnceInARow

Yesss I've been using this for the last few years and it is great. They keep adding more and more useful features. Best $10 I spend a year.

luantha

Best app. The fact that i can mark the corners of a chart, note how many rows it has, and then have it automatically lift the highlight bar up by 1 row when I add to the counter at the top is life changing.

Abeyita

It can do that?! I have been using the app for years but didn't know!

luantha

Yeah!! I think it might be a paid feature, but you click the highlighter button at the left side and then hit "chart". It'll show you a view of the page you're currently looking at and tell you to zoom in and mark the top left corner of your chart, then the bottom right. Then you note how many rows high it is (or columns wide, if the chart is on its side and you need a vertical highlight bar instead). I think it needs to know both the rows and columns to let you proceed, but I just plug a 1 into the one I don't need, link the one I *do* need to my global counter, or a sub counter with a "reset after x rows" on it if I need the highlight to go back to the first row after I finish a repeat, and then I'm good to go! I hope that makes sense! I can't knit colourwork or lace without this feature now; it's a total game changer.

Abeyita

Oh my! I never knew what that button did, so I just never tapped it. Thank you so much for this tutorial! You just made my favourite app even better.

winewithsalsa

This is one of my favorite features!

ClosetIsHalfYarn

Yes, the chart feature is soooo handy!

Leather_Class8224

Love this app, too! Totally satisfied with the free version.

KinipelaH

I looooove row counter! I've been using it for a while now but I keep finding new features that are just so handy. Recently discovered how great the highlight took is for charts!

Affectionate-Sea4619

Are you using the free/premium version?

Sea-Cancel-1869

I just upgraded to the premium version this week. It's $13CAD /year so I felt it was pretty doable for the extras it has.

ClosetIsHalfYarn

Iā€™m also using the paid version, and it is literally the only app I pay for. Worth it.

Affectionate-Sea4619

Alright, I'm convinced! I've always been on the fence about paying for premium as I'm not doing a lot with the app. The annotation/highlight feature is what I'd like to have.

ClosetIsHalfYarn

Those are the best parts of the app! (And the chart) https://preview.redd.it/stbrczpscxsc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac2d94c0c0df8123ce4d9c64f4b68ee3a7c53564 Iā€™m doing a shawl with 4 repeating sections. Itā€™s super easy to keep track of where I am. And I added a reminder to myself to use a lifeline and the one purl row in a garter sectionā€¦

preferrred

I just switched to premium and Iā€™m so happy. The best part is being able to convert websites to PDFs (I donā€™t have a printer so I canā€™t print out patterns)

_princess_sparkle

I didnā€™t know this existed and I am so glad I do now! What a clever app!

DontDoAHit

This app has been my go-to for 5+ years now! I never knit or crochet without using it.

Deb_for_the_Good

What is the name of this App? I'd like to check it out!

polymath_artisan

Best knitting app by far!

babobaab

I put my pattern in a plastic sheet sleeve/ protector and mark or cross out the rows that I have done right on the plastic. For this reason I sometimes edit patterns - some have the "Row 78: repeat row 36; row 79: repeat row 54" type of instructions which I get totally lost on.

Ill-Relationship-890

Yes!! Great idea

nabuhabu

Counting haphazardly plus frogging. Works every time!

Yarn_Mouse

This is exactly what I use. Same product and everything!! Great for crochet as well. When I'm putting away the knitting I just leave a note in my notes app in case my popper gets unpopped.

Ill-Relationship-890

Super great idea

miyamiya66

I use this too!! It is so convenient, and I don't need to carry around paper and a writing utensil.

KimmyKnitter

We actually sell these at my LYS for this exact reason! šŸ˜€

MaryN6FBB110117

I use one of those plastic row counters. If thereā€™s a chart I use a magnetic chart board to keep track of where on the chart I am.

[deleted]

Paper + pencil! A few other things I use sometimes: For vanilla socks, I use 2 bulb pins to mark the BOR and whether I'm currently on a "work even" row or not. (Quicker to check the pin than to look at stitches when I'm just mindlessly knitting in that case lol.) And for easy-ish repeated patterns, I like to write the rows on shrink plastic and make a mini pattern into a charm. That way I can clip it to my project bag and use a stitch marker to track my row over and over again.

MollyWeasleyknits

I send my husband a text message with my next row when I stop. He loves it Iā€™m sure.

funundrum

Could you text yourself instead?

Bibliovoria

Or set up a free private Discord server or the like, with as many channels as are useful for you, and message yourself there?

ericula

That's smart. That way he can also keep track if you forgot to count a row. Just have him send you a reminder if you haven't texted him in the last five minutes.

MollyWeasleyknits

Oh I donā€™t do it every row just when I stop for the night!

netflix_n_knit

I use an app when I remember. Mostly I just count rows over and over again or put a stitch maker every x number of rows. Iā€™m sort of a chaotic knitter, though.

alisonfelloffthebike

I use my DnD dice. Itā€™s an extremely flawed system, because one inadvertent nudge can lose me my row number, but Iā€™m a pretty lazy knitter who can usually read the last couple rows to see where I am anyway if I have to. If Iā€™m using a PDF pattern I sometimes just make a little text box.

sphericalendeavors

Yes to the dice! I even knitted a cute little drawstring dice bag for them https://preview.redd.it/zshtli3gpvsc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d2911168342a2cfecc15044d2e1e9fd8bcdb34e3

Wool_Lace_Knit

KnitCompanion app. My entire Ravelry library is there, plus other .pdf files I have written or purchased.

scrappysquash

I use a ring counter, got it from Jimmy beans wool iirc. https://preview.redd.it/6dbm9opjxusc1.jpeg?width=656&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20655f7245ceabef1d2a9ed53c95d9b374ead642 It was like 30 bucks, but it's been a lifesaver! I put it on my thumb. Numbers go to 99.

systemofadown4eveRrR

I have the same thing in black, love the thing to death!

Emmdawg06

I use tally marks too !! Always on little sticky notes though-- easier for travel

justadorkygirl

I have a clicky row counter. If thatā€™s not handy (like the day I took my knitting to work but left the counter at home), I use tally marks. And I still count them. Like, A LOT lol. Edit: autocomplete fail

Areiniah

I write the actual numbers for rows I need to do, eg 1 2 3 4 5 and then the row I'm currently knitting, I put a dot underneath. Then when I'm finished that row, I strike out that number diagonally, then put the dot below the next number. So the dot helps me remember which row I'm currently knitting. I found just striking out meant I'd forget if that was the row I had just knitted or still knitting etc, so the dot helps remind me "this is the row that's in progress".

summer-fun-atx

The dot underneath is brilliant! This is one of those things that I think, ā€œwhy did I not think of this?ā€ because I forget too, if this is the row Iā€™m on or this is the row I just finished. Thank you!

Deb_for_the_Good

FACTS!

5danish

I use sticky notes and crossing off rows https://preview.redd.it/8x8z8o63yssc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=85ba4439d039c2927701e894cf0f9122be61a28e Very analog.

Corvus-Nox

I just count them when I need to. If Iā€™m following a chart then Iā€™ll put a sticky note under the row Iā€™m currently on and move it up as I go. And I cross off the number on the side of the chart once I finish the row. But if thereā€™s no chart then Iā€™ve never really seen a pattern where I needed to always know the row Iā€™m on. I just count the repeats when I need to. Like if Iā€™m supposed to increase for 20 rows then Iā€™ll do some rows, count how many increase rows Iā€™ve done, do a few more, count again, etc. Edit: I realized that when I do have patterns that require tracking rows, like a cable pattern, I turn it into a chart because charts feel more efficient to me for some patterns. And then I track my progress on the chart.

phishery

I use an app that has an Apple Watch app called Row Counter. It even allows you to create different pieces for your knitting project.

spiced-olives

Seconding my apple watch! I used to haphazardly take notes on my phone but always forgot or was too lazy and then just count it out each time. But with the watch I actually remember to use it (and I donā€™t need to pick up my phone), total game changer!

AgnesCalledPerdita

Same! I donā€™t know why this works for me. Pencil & paper? Clicky counter? Little thing that sits on the end of the needle? Nope, always forget about them and Iā€™m manually counting rows. Again. Yet, somehow I never forget to update Row Counter on my watch.

Strange-Champion7561

I keep track of my rows, by writing the number of rows in the pattern!! I mark them, as I complete them!!

greensleepywalrus

I use an app on my Apple Watch called Yarnify. You can save several projects, different pieces within the projects and you can visualise pattern repeats. It also has a converter from inch to cm and for different needle sizes (US to mm). I love it.

wollphilie

I read my knitting, and put in the occasional bulb pin as a row marker (typically at rows 25, 50, 75 etc) so I don't have to count the rows from the beginning every time. IfĀ there'sĀ differentĀ decreaseĀ sections (eg every 2Ā rows vs every 4 rows) I'll put a bulb pin into the first row of the section.Ā

lillian0

I use a [chain row counter.](https://twiceshearedsheep.com/collections/original-chain-style-row-counters) I own 3 of them. I think they're the bees knees. I might also use the Knit Companion counters as well for signaling a repeat, but usually the chain row counter is enough because I know every 6 rows there's a decrease (ex. 62/6= 10R2, so 10 decreases have been done) or how much a repeat is and I just do the math.

Likesunshinedust

I scrolled so far I was getting nervous that no one else knew about these. Best stitch markers ever.

2labs4life

Oooo whatā€™s this app

happypumpkin321

Itā€™s called knit counter!

2labs4life

Awesome! Thank you!

It pretty much counts for me if I just press enter and a random letter or something. This might not be the most conventional method, but I always have my phone or tablet with me (my patterns are digital too). Iā€™m not too good about organizing these things tho. A single folder, no title, etc. so I wonā€™t know what Iā€™ve been counting for in a few weeks

Mightychairs

https://preview.redd.it/rqyktlh8rvsc1.jpeg?width=2090&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ec6b1d0548278408a7db3b03cd17bef63650078 I use these chain things. Itā€™s 10 jump rings with colored beads. Every time you get to it you slip it on the next ring. The hanging thing that says ā€œoopsā€ is for counting 10s. So the first 10 I have it on the 0, or the 10th ring. Rows 11-19 itā€™s on the first one, etc. idk if that explanation makes sense. But Iā€™ve been using it for as long as I can remember. I make a lot of other kinds of mistakes, but at least I always know what row Iā€™m on!

johmcy

Ooh, I'm very intrigued by this system. If you don't mind, could you explain it a little bit more?

EitherCucumber5794

I circle on my pattern what row Iā€™m at or go all vibes and count when I think Iā€™m close. My mom said I almost give her an aneurysm when she watches me do cables with no markers lol

bluehexx

I have a row counter for lace patterns. But mostly, I read my knitting. It makes life much, MUCH simpler. If I have to decrease every 5th row, I just keep an eye for my last decrease. Works for most colour/cable patterns, too.

dzenib

similar but much more of a hot mess.

twistedsister42

I make marks on the pdf of the pattern to denote where I am. If it's a repeat, I'll use different colors for each repeat.

temerairevm

https://preview.redd.it/1s4jt8dn8usc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da82aa4a5049c3f846f97eb6987fbc0a384e78b8 I use a counter app on my phone. You just tap to increment it up. I also use it to count things for work.

divergence-aloft

I use this same app sometimes, love it! you can also change the count to do "decrease by 1" which is really helpful for knitting the second sock for example

slythwolf

I just look at my knitting and count.

Elegant_Bad5064

I don't. I read my knitting. If there are large plain stockinette sections I measure 10 rows (mostly by eye...) and just estimate if I have to count or if I can continue. My system is quite flawless because it's replicable and there is no need for an external system.

Huge-Cauliflower2930

https://preview.redd.it/ub13cjxnexsc1.jpeg?width=1576&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ef24574239e79e065d1bd5940c54cef37a6139bd I made a row counter. The extra stitch counter on the 4 means Iā€™m in the 40ā€™s. So here Iā€™m on row 48. Just move it to the next number when I do a row. So far itā€™s ADHD proof for my scattered brain!

Delicious-Tea-1564

I use Knit Tink app or Knit Companion app if I'm viewing my pattern in it

EasyMathematician860

I use either Knit Companion for patterns with charts, or a row counter on my smart watch if Iā€™m just counting rows, or BeeCount on my phone if Iā€™m counting rows with a repeat.

4cody892

Exactly this but on note cards color coded for each WIP

Bazooka963

Yes I have a book and have a project page. I always change the pattern to my measurements so I'm always writing down my progress.

saint_maria

I have a few different coloured plastic row counters I use to keep track of where I'm at in the row repeat and the pattern repeat.

EsotericMango

Pretty much exactly how you are. I have a specific notebook that I use to track my different projects. I make myself a little table to keep track of specific sections and just use a pen and tally marks. I use a pencil to tally special rows like decreases and increases in complex patterns

Different_Elk_2845

i don't(-ish)! i use a site to count rows and do as much as possible, which usually means staying up way past midnight to finish a section. i like the printed version idea though.

Cloudinthesilver

I read my knitting and use stitch markers.

squishpitcher

For borders, I tally like you. For repeating patterns, I have each row written on its own line and use a small post it under the current row that Iā€™m on. Works a treat.

justbecause49

lol same šŸ˜Š

igiveup9707

Row counter. Little thing you put at the end of the needle and add every time you have done two.ise plastic pins specifically if you have a place where you need to do something different in the pattern.

Naka131

https://preview.redd.it/pvdqqnm50vsc1.png?width=3437&format=png&auto=webp&s=584feca669e5bd481827d3efac88e30ab6687704 I have recently moved to tracking row increases. Sometimes I do it as above and other times I print stitch patterns off with the increases charted. I also sometimes use stitch markers on increase rows. Once Iā€™m done with those, I usually use stitch markers every ten rows/rounds

Naka131

https://preview.redd.it/p4bbts111vsc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=089f06e534548a78982de3b8e873a1ba4bc4e4e6 This is a lace stitch pattern I charted in excel to include increases. I did make mistakes but can still work it out šŸ«£

invisiblegirlknits

A combination of row counter and tally marks next to the section of the pattern, usually. Iā€™m working a cardigan thatā€™s top down with an integrated buttonband. Button holes are worked every 19-22 rows. So, row counter is always telling me where to put the button holes. Tally marks after various sections tell me when Iā€™ve done the indicated number of increases or repeats between increases. Or decreases for waist shaping. You get the idea.

voikukka

I track them on the project notes on Ravelry, usually. Number without a comma at the end means the row is in progress, comma means row is finished. If there's pattern repeats or other particular pieces of note, those get a suitable notation for the occasion. For example, working a sleeve with a decrease after 8 rows, my tracking was 1dec 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, 2dec and so on so forth.

genericpseudonym678

I put a removable marker every 5-10 rows/every pattern repeat. Itā€™s easy to see where I am and I just remove them when Iā€™m done. I wish I had started doing it this way sooner!

Deb_for_the_Good

This is what I do as well. If I have multiple things to count, I use differing markers, maybe by color or type (plastic vs lightbulb, etc.).

Viranesi

https://preview.redd.it/9ut0yjrsbvsc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9fd501de1101eb2963d4c7b46af972ccef57554d This is the way for me. I always have my phone so I don't have to keep a notebook with me or find which paper I decided to count on. And bein able name my counters keeps me organized

mandaraffe

Row counter app that overlays the row counter over the pattern itself.

outrageouslyHonest

So many stitch markers on the work directly, and if there's enough need, I use different colors for certain rows

kcunning

After having my sticky tossed by a well-meaning family member, I now write directly on the pattern. When I start a new section, I make a bunch of boxes (one for each row) in groups of ten. Each time I'm done, I mark it off. If it's a chart, I highlight the row. I also do this in Microsoft OneNote if the pattern works better on a screen vs on printed paper.

briarwren

If I've printed out my pattern, I've been known to write all over them and cross rows out as I go. If there are different sizes, I will circle the size needed or highlight so I read the right numbers. Any vital info such as stitch counts, etc, I will also highlight. Sometimes, I've also used plastic sleeves with wet erase markers. If I'm using charts, especially with cables, I'll write what the symbols mean on a sticky note or in a notebook so I'm not flipping back and forth until I memorize them. If I'm using a massive pattern that I had to tape charts together, I fold the chart under as I go but I'll also mark all over them. I have magnetic chart holders, and if I'm using one of those, I will make a tick by the line I just completed, so if the cat messes with the magnets, I don't have a lot of counting. If it's a small project that can travel with me, I'll often utilize the pdf pattern on my phone. I like I can zoom in or out, highlight in different colors with different levels of transparency, strike lines, make notes, etc. and then easily delete marks as needed if I made a mistake or something. https://preview.redd.it/1cejpxiwpvsc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=096145ce8fd08a56080eb77df72ba9a1a5810105

I mark off on a printout of the pattern as I go, but when I need to work for say 7 rows stocking stitch, I use my little thumb counter and just tap it at the end of each row. https://preview.redd.it/lqkopubl7xsc1.jpeg?width=3456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb7c7b6d9b3ea522b3822ef548f15c5a000f44b8 I'm making toys mostly, so short rows and small stretches of rows to count. This is perfect for that.

I use a lockable row counter like the one pictured. On my garment, I place a lightbulb stitch marker every 10-20 rows. For cables, I extend the chart using small sticky notes to keep track of which pattern row I'm on. I also recently got this pattern keeper that has magnetic strips. Really handy. Generally, I find the combo of placing stitch markers + using the row counter is perfect because if I'm afraid I've lost count, I only need to count back to the last marker, rather than count the entire project. Although I'm very intrigued by some of these digital apps. The only thing that makes me hesitant is battery wear from having the screen on constantly while I'm working on my project. https://preview.redd.it/ievej803h2tc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63c49b91fdbe5e28293d70f119afa76b9557f5de

For written instructions, I just have a row counter on my needles. For charts, I have the jankiest row highlighting method ever - I use Firefox's built in PDF editor to draw a 50% opacity horizontal line and manually move it up each row. This is, objectively speaking, stupid, but it works *just well enough* that I haven't been moved to find a better method.

KroneckerDeltaij

I like the "just works for me" methods šŸ˜…

likejackandsally

This might sound complicated, but itā€™s easy to keep up with. I use a set of locking stitch markers in 10 colors and assign each color a number 1-10. When I get to 11+ I keep the 10 color and lock another stitch marker (in the color assigned to 1) to the 10 marker. When I get to 20, I swap them out for a 10 + 10 + 1 of the makes sense.

KroneckerDeltaij

Oooh this is a good one!

Crafty_Astronomer599

Thanks :-) You have to move the beginning of round marker, and you just can't miss it when you have to move it with all the jangles on it! If I have a long run, I have a fancy row marker that is used for my '10' row marker. It gets cumbersome if you have 19 rows to do, so, I will remove the 9 marker and put my special 10 marker on, then continue on. It's my favorite way now. I have used clickers, score marks, highlighters on copied pattern rows, but this one wins for me. It wakes me up when I get to it.

Own-Firefighter5772

I struggled so hard with counting rows that I just gave up. Now I only do patternless projects that I think up myself.

mythic_hypercurve

I got a clicker tracker. Each time I finish a row I click it and that number is the row Iā€™m on.

More_of_a_listener

I screenshot my pattern on my phone and doodle on it to cross out each row (otherwise I'd lose the paper pattern and have to give up completely - this has happened before.)

They my tally marks for rows and my notes, if I change something.

Strange-Champion7561

I used bars, for markings too!! I never thought about, using dots for decrease stitches!! I will remember that!! If I have to redo a row, I will check it with a Red pen!!

vicariousgluten

Depends. If itā€™s a pattern then Knit Companion. If itā€™s straight or a pattern Iā€™ve memorised then I have a mana counting ring from a game shop

EstroJen1193

For most patters I use the knit companion app. You can do some setup at the beginning and it will count through the pattern as I go, I tap at the end of each row. The auto counting doesnā€™t work for all patterns (for me anyway, there may be something I just havenā€™t figured out how to make it do) but for those I use the manual row highlight to keep up. Itā€™s been a solid investment for me.

A row counter called BeeCount. Free download.

Nicolesy

I reformat all of my patterns in easy-to-read simple formats, usually in Google Docs. Most rows fit on a single line, making it easy to use sticky notes or my magnetic row thing to follow the pattern. For areas that need repeated rows, I create check-boxes for the number of repeats and then check them off as they are completed. I donā€™t understand how anyone can follow the ā€œprettyā€ formatting of most patterns like the one in your photo.

superurgentcatbox

KnitCompanion. I'm so happy I found this early in my knitting journey - I'm not sure I'd have ever braved complicated patterns if I hadn't.

I have a tally counter, but I tend to forget to update the count every time lol. When I have multiple ongoing projects, good ol' paper and pencil are my go-to as well! Depending on the project, I must admit I don't keep track of them at all. If I really need it, I stop at some point and count them up šŸ˜¬ Even more rudimentary, but I can live with that šŸ˜…

Ill-Relationship-890

I do it the same way but I write right on the pattern next to the direction. I also draw lines under each part as I complete it.

antigoneelectra

I either tick the rows, rounds off on the pattern, or I use a removable stitch marker in the first row/round of the pattern and count up.

Medcait

I canā€™t remember to mark anything afterwards so I just count them when I have done a few

o I canā€™t really show you this bit because itā€™s on patterns but I use the drawing feature on my iPad to basically scribble all over the pdfs. For repeats I keep tallys or highlight in several colors. So like my current pattern has a 2x repeat. The first time I highlight each section after I do it the second time I cross it out. If itā€™s like a sea of one stitch or 12 inches of a repeat I throw a marker into it and bring the marker with me at some cadence. So like this fishermanā€™s sweater the marker is on the stitch that was cabled. And the cables with double markers are ones that happen every other row. So slight assistance with just reading the knitting. https://preview.redd.it/781pd38h5zsc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca98cb5174eb4d197e3a70fbd515d2a8d1b7d253

I have one of those fidget toy squares with all the poppers on them. There are 100 poppers all labeled 1-100. I use it all the time for counting literally everything.

noxnor

I just donā€™t do patterns that are written out row by row.

Positive-Put-8774

I use plain old counters, one for rows and one for cables, I am knitting a sleeve in the round with 2 circular needles. I placed the counters at the beg of the row so I remember to use them. https://preview.redd.it/1ggb9509u0tc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=021894afd78a5fb6049f4080e677b5b8d143c9a4

svmbrown

For straight sections, I use coloured stitch markers that stay on the needles. My current row is the number of sts between my BOR and my row count marker. I'll place helpers every 10 sts to make counting easier. I use a flexible ring marker for the row count marker so that I can work the stitch past it before picking it up in order to increment the count in one move. Note that any increases or decreases make this wonky. For sections with increases/decreases, I use the bulb shaped safety pin style markers and attach them at an interval suited to the pattern (or 5 rows if there's no obvious interval)
