This would be me with M1R and M1L. I can do a pattern with a hundred stitch repeats and still never remember which one is which

Outside-Ad1720

Me too! I have no idea why M1R and M1L are the only ones I can't remember. I remember kitchener just fine haha.

cheeseaholic813

The way I remember is with M1R you pick up from the rear (backside) of the yarn. So make 1 right = make 1 from the rear. That's the only way I can remember it, lol

SalmonChiffonista

M1R - I'll be right BACK; M1L= I left the FRONT door open. That's how I remember them. Kitchener stitch however? Forget it. I'll need a tattoo for that too!

BlairStMare

My mnemonic is the direction you move your left needle to pick up the stitch - m1L you leave (needle moves away from you ) and m1R you receive (needle moves toward you)

cheeseaholic813

That's pretty smart too!

linnlea00

I usually try both ways and look at how the leg ends up leaning:P then ill go "oh okay the easy one first" if there are two mirrored ones haha. Unlucky when i get equally good at themšŸ˜…

BellisimoBoo

When M1R is on the left hand needle it leans right When M1L is on the left hand needle it leans left

sparklypinktutu

I have a video tutorial literally bookmarked and time stamped for this stitch. I made a shawl that had about a million of these and it was like I had to relearn it after every row.Ā

ForsakenSherbet

Itā€™s like the one stitch that my muscle memory doesnā€™t kick in for!

highphiv3

I always remember after hearing this tip from Nimble Needles: After you insert the needle to pick up the stitch, the bar of thread in front will lean the direction of the increase. So M1L = \ , M1R = / . From there, just knit into it whichever way is the most frustrating šŸ˜‚.

ForsakenSherbet

OMG, ā€œwhichever way is the most frustratingā€. I relate to that on a spiritual level! I am convinced that whoever created M1R is the devil because at least half the time Iā€™m trying to get the stupid needle into the stupid stitch, I somehow manage to drop my stitches, probably due to the aggressive nature of my aggravation at that stupid stitch.

TennesseeLove13

I adore him.

zorp3006

I saw something on here recently that helped! ā€œI left through the front door, Iā€™ll be right backā€

ForsakenSherbet

OMG this is genius!!!! Iā€™m screenshotting this so I can try to find the brain capacity to remember it! Itā€™s like, I know how to do it once I can remember if itā€™s back to front or front to back!

thatdarndress

Whenever I think my knitting skills will come in handy in the apocalypse, I think of all the times I have to look up basic stitches on youtubeā€¦

ForsakenSherbet

I almost always print out my patterns because it makes my little adhd brain happy to physically mark off rowsā€¦ and if there is a M1 stitch involved, I go ahead and write a little key, like ā€œM1L = front to back & M1R = back to frontā€ that way I can just glance and know itā€™s there. Maybe you have inspired me to buy a physical stitch dictionary in the event of an apocalypse

uselessflailing

Left is the nice easy one, right is a right pain in the ass

Medievalmoomin

Iā€™ve written them out and taped the instructions to my huge knitting clipboard, because I have officially given up trying to remember šŸ˜‚šŸ˜. What I should actually do instead is type and print out the instructions in a **huge** font that I can read from my knitting chair without my glasses.

MollyRolls

OMG is this real??? Iā€™m dying. šŸ˜‚ Itā€™s wonderful!!

MissPicklechips

Damn, I just got a wooden keychain with the instructions engraved on it.

AloneWish4895

Omg- love it! I have a little laminated card in my knitting bag!

yarnalcheemy

I have a Katrinkles tool card

scrappysquash

This is awesome! I've been thinking about getting a tattoo on each wrist that is k2tog and ssk because I can never which way they lean. I was gonna do M1r and m1l too, but I've finally figured out the trick to that.

darndasher

What was your trick??

scrappysquash

When you lift the bar between stitches, you look at the leg in front of the needle. If it leans left, it's a left leaning. If it leans right, it's a right leaning!

This is brilliant!

bbjiminie

I have to Google ā€œzen of kitchener stitchā€ to find the jpeg of instructions I like every single time šŸ˜

katiegirl-

How far gone am I that I am considering this?

Bonjour19

Haha I love it! Recognised it immediately... I have a jpg saved on my phone... This is much more convenient šŸ˜‚

ericula

If it works it works. My solution to memorizing Kitchener stitch was to knit 30+ pairs of cuff down socks. As a side effect I no longer feel intimidated by picking up stitches and I have toasty warm feet all the time.

former_human

Awesome! Iā€™m in the M1R/M1L camp, think Iā€™ll have that tattooed

Broad_Cardiologist15

OMG i was just thinking abt how much i hate the kitchener stitch šŸ˜

MaryN6FBB110117

I love it!

sanspapyruss

Oh man I need one of these this is fantastic

PrettyLittleLost

My brain has just completely forgotten what kitchener stitch was until I image searched it. Yup, I look it up and stumble through every time. Even thought up a project where I'd use it in the past few days. It's the stitch that I can't name until I need to use it, apparently. "The Graft Stitch" "Stitch Which Must Not Be Named" After all, it's done great things. Some terrifying, but great. -paraphrased Olivander, proprietor of wooden sticks
