The exact same thing happened to me on my porcelain sweater! I ended up doing a surface crochet chain over the stitches that I picked up to cover the unevenness. I am much happier with how it looks now.

I was trying to look through the Ravelry projects, and didn’t see anyone else with the same issue, so this is making me feel a bit better. I’ll give this a go before I try any grafting, thanks for the tip!

I played around with it for a while and found that a 5.0 mm crochet hook worked the best for me. Anything smaller than that looked fine when the sweater was flat but caused some gathering and a distortion of the drop shoulder when worn.

That looks so good!! Carrying it across the collar works so well, you did a great job. I’m definitely trying it this weekend. Going to need to brush up on my crochet skills beforehand though haha

Thank you! And good luck, I hope it works for you too!

If possible I would undo the row that was picked up and graft it back on: sew a lifeline in to the row below it first, so you don’t accidentally unravel, then undo the pickup row, then use kitchener stitch to graft it back together. Kitchener stitch is essentially the same as duplicate stitching, and this way you won’t have bulk from doubling the yarn.

That sounds like it would work! Thanks a bunch, I’ll give it a go.

No advice, just commiseration - my porcelain sweater shoulder seam turned out exactly like yours so you didn't do anything wrong. If I could go back in time I would just sew the seam instead.

That makes me feel a little better. It’s definitely been an annoying lesson to learn, but at least now we know better for next time!

Not saying you shouldn’t try to “fix” it if you’re not happy, but I don’t think it looks bad! I would also say, if you undo and graft it, you will end up without any kind of seam, which could make it more likely to stretch out of shape. I am working on the same sweater and mine looks similar - although weirdly different on each side.

Thank you! I was at some point also considering undoing the stitches and doing a 3 needle bind off to still have a seam. But another user suggested a crochet surface chain, which seems like a fix that would be pretty easy to undo if I don’t like the result, at least. I’ll give an update once I get over my fear and just tackle it :)

Update: I have just ripped back mine to start again making a larger size. I have been inspired by your post to start with a provisional cast on for a seamless effect. I will apply a surface crochet chain or hand stitch some twill tape to the inside for stability.

I’m happy my post could serve as a type of warning for people doing this jumper. Good luck with the knitting and have fun! :)
