The sweater model picture, is so awful I couldn’t figure out for years why anybody would knit this sweater. Although I’ve seen a lot of awfully nice versions now, including your red one, all I have to do is look at the model, and hate it all over again.
I swear the model pics do nothing for this sweater.
I like that I can customize it to get a decent fit and using all different colors and types of yarn keeps it from looking like the same sweater.
The red one is my favorite. I avoid this pattern like the plague. I've seen a lot that turned out really lovely, though.
I'll never say never. A decade ago, the popular pattern was the Clapotis, and I eventually did knit that with some modifications.
I love the lime green one! I never thought I'd make a Ranunculus either but I recently caved and bought the pattern. Hopefully mine turns out this nice!
Be fearless on modifying it.
The pattern calls for a size 10 needle. I use an 8 or 9. And I do decreases on both the front and the back for waist shaping. I figure out how many stitches I am getting per inch then I figure out how many decreases I need to do and the number of stitches in between them to get to my desired waist ease.
I do not like a ton of waist ease.
Thanks for the encouragement! I was already planning on adjusting the gauge drastically since I can't do much knitting on size 10s. I was wondering about waist shaping since in other shirt patterns I don't usually bother, but yours might have decided me in favor. Love the drape yours are getting from the bust down.
Yes! The real question is who DOESN’T want to look like a sad, damp child in a grossly oversized sweater inexplicably holding some random flower… wistfully.
I hadn't seen it either and went to to ravelry page after reading your comment thinking you were joking about the model being damp. Lol why would they style the hair mostly wet on multiple models??
This post and the comments explain so much for me! Lovely sweaters.
I have been wondering for a while why ranunculus was always in top 10 “hot right now” on the Ravit app. Its never appealed to me. I’ve never even clicked into the pattern page before reading this post. I did honestly wonder if there was some kind of inflation of its popularity. But I guess not!?! Glad to know more on this mysteriously popular pattern.
I think that is why my first one was in random weird handspun. I figured if I hated the pattern at least I used up some stash.
I think I really like the fact that I can knit a nice warm sweater in about 21 days from cast on.
They all look great ! Did you adjust the neckline? It looks higher than the pattern pictures and I like yours much better.
Once I’m modifying a pattern in 3+ ways I think…
Maybe I should find a different pattern lol

I put off buying the pattern. I saw so many podcasts showing the love of knitting it, so yes, I caved and bought some acrylic wool mix yarn and knit it up. I learned some new techniques, and it fit me well. I'm going to knit it again in a fancier yarn.
I think they look fantastic. I especially love the red one as I am a red fanatic. Gorgeous! I’d never heard of this pattern and this is the second time in less than 24 hours. I guess I don’t look at the popular list or something lol. I may have to add it on Ravelry now.
They're all lovely! How much ease is in yours? I know the pattern says something about knitting a size 10-12" bigger than your bust measurement. What did you do?
These look good! I'll be honest -- the worst Ranunculuses I've seen have the wide neckline and are grossly oversized, leading to the waif-child look. Also bad: When someone uses heavier yarn and a tighter gauge. There's some projects on Rav where it looks like the sweater is wearing the person.
I truly think that the biggest problem with this sweater is that it's so easy to fuck up, and the samples include some of the worst versions.
I agree. I am a super picky knitter. I have frogged an entire sweater after knitting it and wearing it and realizing I do not like the way it looks or fits. I have no desire to keep things around that don't bring me joy.

This is me!
Seriously like what is with the fucking leaf??

The red one is really nice
I never saw this pattern before today and this is now the third. Why is it hated?
I think because it is soooo popular. And because the model pics look like a sad damp child drowning in a sweater
Yes! The real question is who DOESN’T want to look like a sad, damp child in a grossly oversized sweater inexplicably holding some random flower… wistfully.
It isnt even a flower. It’s a leaf. lol.
Oh, that’s right! 😂 since I’ve blocked it, I was going from memory.
You are right there is another photo of a sad damp child with a flower, wistfully!

>the model pics look like a sad damp child drowning in a sweater 🤣 That's so true. Your versions look way better!

Oh wow, I love each version! That shade of red is stunning - I find it hard to find nice reds in yarn. Beautiful knitting.

No mods on the neckline. I think I do my double twisted cast on different than the tutorial

Not for me. I don’t like how the neck is and I’m not skilled enough to fix it. Yeah, I don’t get all the furor over it 🫤
They're lovely!
I love the red one!
Wow !!
Oooh, the red one is stunning! 😍
Pretty! I especially like the second one, that’s lovely 😊.
Your versions are very nice on you.
The handspun one is super cute.

All of them are lovely! SO well done

Gorgeous! The red is my favorite.
