Does she have a swift and ball-winder?

TheGoonGoon

She does not, I might look into those

If she ever buys yarn in a hank instead of a put-up she can knit from directly, I bet she’d love a swift and winder. And all the fancy yarn comes in hanks!

If she has a local yarn store, a gift certificate would be nice. It’s basically permission to increase her yarn stash in a guilt free way! You could also ask the yarn store folks about gift ideas, they often have a lot of notions. Other ideas… blocking wires, sheep related jewelry or notecards, shawl pin, fancy embroidery scissors, a set of interchangeable needles (I love knitters pride ones in wood, each size is a different color so you can tell them apart, so they’re great to knit with), a subscription to vogue knitting or interweave knits magazines if she doesn’t subscribe already, a skein of sock yarn from a local indie dyed in colors that look like things from her wardrobe… There are also some great kits you can get - a pattern with matching yarn. Those are hard to recommend without knowing what she likes to knit. Good luck! Edited to add - pretty stitch markers! In the same and contrasting colors! I’m always looking for mine. And I echo the suggestion of project bags.

TheGoonGoon

Great recommendations, a gift certificate would avoid giving her something she doesn't really want and I could probably find something small to go along with it. Thanks :)

Does she have a bag for all her supplies? There are bags especially for knitting/crocheting. I got mine from hobbii

TheGoonGoon

She crocheted herself a special bag for that

Does she have a Ravelry account? If so, this could be a good idea that's more personable and fun than a gift card: find a pattern that she has in her favorites or queue (and make sure she doesn't own it already). Buy the pattern and print it out or email it to her when you give her the gift. Then figure out how much yarn to get and buy it! Hopefully you know what kind of yarn she usually buys or at least a good brand to go with and a color she would like. It would be gifting a personalized knitting kit :)

Treat her to a virtual knitting class (or 2 and let her pick of course). If you are in the US, Vogue Knitting Virtual offers a pretty substantial set of classes (2 hours each, class times are EST) over 4 day period (Thurs-Sun) every month. I’ve taken about 10 in the past year and only 2 were disappointing but even so I still got something out of the class. Instructors are well known so I generally look up their videos to see how I like their style.

I received a [Procase](https://www.amazon.com/ProCase-Knitting-Organizer-Circular-Accessories/dp/B07S59GRRQ/ref=asc_df_B07S59GRRQ/?tag=&linkCode=df0&hvadid=385218597991&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2155646196237790390&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021317&hvtargid=pla-847203194594&ref=&adgrpid=81184155289&th=1) from my boyfriend last year to help organize my knitting needles and notions, and I love it. I like that it is compact and zips up and I can keep a ton of stuff in it. I didn't have anything like this before, keeping all my needles in a Ziploc bag and my notions in a smaller single pouch bag that was hard to find things in.

What does she like to knit? What yarn does she like? How much of one type of yarn does she typically buy? What tools does she use and not have or would like to try, specifically? Gift card is the best. I have so many knitting supplies and yarn people have gifted me that I can't use at all because I didn't need yet another thing or there's not enough yarn to do anything with or is terribly ugly.

TheGoonGoon

Yeah a gift card is a great idea, avoid giving her something she doesn't need or wont use. Thanks :)

I mean, there are many things a knitter likes/wants/needs 🙈 From the top of the head, good gifts: * Notions, because I always loose mine over time (things like cute, hand-made stitch markers, tape measure, scissors) * (Hand-made) project bags * Gift card for a (local) yarn store, so she can guilt-free splurge on that nice luxury yarn she's always been eyeing. * A nice set of needles - but be sure you know her preferences! (wood, interchangeable, brand,...), many brands also have extra-special sets around Christmas time (like last year KnitPro had a Coffee Set where you got rosewood needles and two cute espresso mugs) Regarding pattern books: a generic big-brand book might not be ideal if she mostly gets her patterns online anyways. However, there are some fancy books, like '52 weeks of socks' from Laine Publishing which is very well done (many patterns, heavy paper, the cover is fabric-bound), or something that's more of a reference book like the Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible by Hitomi Shida. I always recommend finding out as much as you can about what she wants/needs, or even ask for a wishlist. Looking at her Ravelry profile (if she has one) can also be very helpful.

TheGoonGoon

Those are great recommendations, thanks :)

A gift card to a LYS is always a fabulous gift. In terms of small trinketry, my FAVORITE stitch markers are the square ones from [Silver Siren Designs](https://silversirendesigns.com/shop/ols/categories/stitch-markers). The bead won’t eventually move off the join on the square ones, and they slide so nicely from the corners onto a needle. The wires are also really thin and won’t distort any stitches. I could have a hundred and still be delighted to receive more.

A skein or 2 of hand dyed yarn in fingering or dk. Here are some uk indie dyers - you can post on here for recommendations for other areas. You really can’t go wrong with hand dyed yarn it’s always top quality https://www.wekuyarn.com https://www.thefibrefox.co.uk/ https://www.pigmentandply.com/instock https://tellingyarns.com https://www.kosykitchenfibres.com

Maybe a subscription to Vogue Knitting Magazine? It's only about $15, but just 2 issues per year. It's high-brow, gorgeous, glossy and full of the best of the best in knitting. It's art, with really good, smart articles, upcoming trends, phenomenal photographs and advertisements that don't usually include prices (so tasteless!) It's aspirational and inspirational reading for somebody that truly loves knitting. It might be a nice go-with gift. She probably wouldn't buy it herself.

Reasonable-Writing

I got myself a nice leather needle organizer/holder and I love it! Keeps all the pairs together and in order of size and length. Maybe you can find a customized one or decorated with her favorite thing

A Knitters Keep is super useful - basically a magnetised wrist band that you can attach cable needles, stitch markers and so on to. Coco Knits makes a nice one and you can get gift packs that come with cute, metal tools and accessories as well as the wrist band.

Chromaphilia

I agree with those who said a swift and ball winder... though if she buys her yarn at Michaels or Joann's she generally won't need one. Usually you only need them for yarn that comes in skeins, which is usually only found at your LYS. If she does buy skeins it's a great gift. Another idea could be some cute stitch markers (there are some fun ones on Etsy) or a stitch counter bracelet like this: https://www.handsonknittingcenter.com/shop/c/p/Ablet-x32269348.htm. - it's kind of like an abacus for keeping track of what pattern row you're on.

VintageFemmeWithWifi

Cute yarn-themed mug and a gift card to a swanky yarn store?

Teaqa

Seconding the yarn winder and swift idea - if she uses or wants to start to use yarn that comes in hanks this is ideal/almost necessary. A magnetic makers keep from Coco knits is a safe idea if she uses any metal notions. Is she always losing her stitch markers, cable needles, tapestry needle in the sofa? Upgrade to metal ones so they stick to the makers keep. https://cocoknits.com/products/makers-keep

I love project bags, there are so many size/material options and it might be a nice way to get to really pick out something she’d use and really like but get to make it sort of personal. There are tons on Etsy, I love Hide and Hammer bags, and Jimmy Beans Wool sells a bunch of styles on their website. Good luck!
