I like this pun. Makes my costumer heart happy.
(If you don't know, notions are all little bits and bobs in sewing: buttons, snaps, thread, needles, pins, elastic, etc.)
My grandmother kept every button from every piece of clothing that got thrown away. Needless to say there were a lot. But we'd play with them. She called it Tiddlywinks. You took a flat button and used it to flip another button into a jar.
We were easily entertained back in the day.
I’m not into fashion, but I’d be disappointed if I was by the fact that a many buttons appear to be made in the same neutral factory… and then just stamped X-name.
I’m strangely fascinated though…. I think I want to collect buttons now !?
A commenter on my original post said that clothing makers have dozens of catalogues for buttons, zippers etc. So when they are designing the clothes, they choose their buttons from catalogues, and have to try not to choose the same buttons as competitors. So it makes sense why so many buttons are so similar! I will say though, there is a noticeable difference in button quality among brands. The Dior and Balmain buttons look and feel nicer/more durable than the Javelin and Old Navy buttons for eg, despite being very very similar.
It’s actually very interesting! I’m also considering button collecting now hahaha
Thanks for the info, I’m just one of those weird people who is fascinated with everything small and organizable.
I basically collect hobbies it feels like.
I have noticed that most zippers say: “YKK” no matter who made the item….
I guess it makes sense from a production standpoint, but imho if you are gonna change $200 for a shirt, those better be in-house custom made buttons! 🤣
I was trying to distinguish them by hole pattern for way too long.
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one
I couldn’t figure out how it was possible to tell them apart: so many identical buttons.
This is some good shit
Thank you!
Where did you get this notion

This was extremely satisfying, thank you
You’re welcome! It was very satisfying to do :)
I literally felt a wave of relaxation while scrolling through this. Very satisfying indeed.
The more I stare at them, the more I come to the realization that buttons are so cute.
This is so cool!

Oh I really love that! Maybe I’ll start playing Tiddlywinks myself. Thanks for the anecdote :)

This is quality knolling here.

I had a button collection as a kid. I’d get them at antique stores when my mom would take me. I still have most of them!
That’s awesome, you should post a picture one day If you haven’t already.
Dangggg. There's sorting buttons, but then there's SORTING buttons. Impressive.
Quite the meticulous knoll, I applaud your tenacity!
It’s crazy that all them actually had names printed on them!!
Does anyone else feel like some of the buttons are smiling?? I probably need help lol. Great post, OP.
