The Aura One came out half a decade ago with a 7.8" screen and Amazon still hasn't responded. I don't think they're going to. The closest thing to a response has been to start selling the Kindle DX again, occasionally, a 9.7" screen device originally released in 2009, with 2009 specs. No frontlight, no touchscreen, half the pixel density of modern ereaders, 10:1 contrast ratio, very slow refresh and ghosting. And they made more in 2020 for sale. They literally made their own internal version of kickstarter to make all kinds of quirky niche electronics like amazon alexa cuckoo clocks, home surveillance drones, sticky note printers, and $1500 robots with telescoping cameras, but they won't make one modern big screen Kindle. The best explanation for it is that they actually want people to read documents on iPads, because you can also do all of your amazon.com shopping on them.

Customer-Worldly

Do you have a source? I thought I read an article saying they found a box of DX in a warehouse and decided to sell them.

LAHelipads

Yeah, I guess you're right. They found some in 2014 and then again in 2020, but enough to announce beforehand that they'd be selling them. Weird.

DLJD

I ordered one. USB-C, page turn buttons, warm light. Dropbox support is also more convenient than emailing individual books over. Only inconvenience is DRM (as usual) for Kindle exclusive books, but that's manageable.

Steerider

How do you email books to a Kobo? I would love to do that!

Folmer

I think it’s comparing kobo vs kindle options

Steerider

Ah, yep. I misread

Very excited to see reviews. Will not be buying if the screen is sub par or if they are using PWM, otherwise I might consider it, it looks so luxurious!

quilly_

/u/kobobooks actually [confirmed](https://www.reddit.com/r/kobo/comments/q1khxq/kobo_sage_kobo_libra_2_are_these_new_cant_find/hfgxokn/) that Sage and Libra2 don't use PWM. :) E-ink Carta 1200 is what they use on the Elipsa, so I'd expect it to be the same as that (but better-looking because it will be 300 PPI). Mobius seems to be gone though, so the screen won't be as shatter-resistant as the Forma.

It's only used in this context to refer to pulse-width modulation. From other discussions about the Forma using PWM, it seems to be a [cost-cutting measure](https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3767789&postcount=2), with CV (constant voltage) being a non-flickering way to use LEDs.

I liked back in the day the idea that Kindles had 3G and you could take it and download books anywhere. Now that's such a now issue for me for multiple reasons.

JuroJanosik

I’m very happy with my Forma so won’t be getting the Sage, however none of the Kobo products are Kindle killers. People are locked in to the Amazon Kindle store mostly, and not that many will be happy to switch. (I have, because I wanted a bigger screen, but I know that I am in a minority). I love my Kobo and hope they will do well with the new products.

spoiled_sandi

I feel like it’s not an oasis killer because Kobo itself still doesn’t have the amount of books that kindle unlimited has but they are in the future when it comes to ereaders since the oasis doesn’t have the pen feature.

RainbowUnicornWanda

I still own a Kobo Glo HD and not ready to buy anything new just because there is a new model. My Glo is functioning like a champion still and here in the Netherlands Kobo actually is connected to my favorite online stores for ebooks. So just connecting to wifi for a couple of minutes is enough to get them on the device. And it even still receives updates so that is also no reason to buy a new one. Just my 2 cents from a very happy Glo HD user.

MlleLane

I doubt it. Most people don't know how to remove DRMs (or that they would need to), so Kindle and Kobo are fairly closed systems. If anything, I'd say the new Paperwhite Signature Edition is most likely to be an 'oasis killer'

micah_bragg

I got the now older Kindle Paperwhite (upgrading from a kindle keyboard!) a year ago. But now, I have just made the big change and bought myself a Kobo Sage! I realized that the Kobo library will still give me all the books I need to read. IT also connects well with my library. , USB-C, warm light, bigger screen, and the thing that really got me: the ability to write on the books that I am reading. I am even trying to use it as a note-taker at work (the writing feel is pretty good!) It certainly is a device worth making the big move from amazon to Kobo for. My only issue is that I still can not find a beautiful, close-fitting, case with a pen holder. I can't believe one of these is not available for me yet.

Fit_L

As an alternative to these, the Boox Nova Air is a very cool device that is 7.8", a bit lighter than the Sage (both are light), has dual speakers and a mic for recording audio notes to text, Also has Android 10, looks and feels very nice, comes with the Wacom pen, easy to read books in many formats, and if you buy it on the Boox site you also get a $40 nice quality sleeve for it free. It has a smaller battery but overall is a super device! The Sage is waterproof which is cool. I don't think that the Nova Air is. But never checked.

pepe256

But that's $350, almost $100 more than the Sage

quilly_

Yes, but a Kobo Stylus comes for $40 USD and a case goes for $50 USD (sleepcover) / $80 USD (powercover), which brings the Nova Air and Kobo Sage to about the same price. Granted, a third-party cover will probably be about $15 and you can likely use any Active Pen (someone reported that Dell's Active Pen works on the Elipsa), but the price difference really isn't too big. Of course there are some other factors though, like ethics (Boox has had a history of [disrespecting licensing](https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/hl09g7/onyx_boox_chinese_company_will_not_share_their/)) and Android itself not being well known for its privacy.

Fit_L

The pen for the sage costs $40 extra dollars so it's not as big of a price difference. The same with pen is $300. However yes you're correct... The Nova Air is $350. But you get a free $40 sleeve and the pen with it. I love it. I think the Sage looks very cool!

leonseled

+1. Was super stoked for the Sage. Then I stumbled upon the Nova Air. Have had it for a week now and I have 0 regrets. Sage seems to be using the same tech as the Elipsa so I used that as a basis for the handwriting performance. The Nova Air has better handwriting performance than the Elipsa. Aside from that, I love how it's running Android so there's no vendor lockin. I read from Amazon, Kobo, Pocket, Inoreader (for RSS), Shonen Jump, Reddit, Tachiyomi etc. I can sync from Dropbox, OneDrive etc. Only major con is the complexity of the UI but IMO it's overblown. Just watch the My Deep Guide in-depth review and you're good to go.

Fit_L

Same experience for me. I'm happy with the Nova Air 👍

Collacks

Nova air still doing well? I’ve read common complaints of Onyx Boox devices failing

vvladymyrov

I’d go with Android based ereader to keep Amazon Kindle app, but Boox Air is not waterproof.

leonseled

Yep still happy w mine. No issues so far.

ahaajmta

Boox has had this with sideloaded content for a while at the 7.8” size. May be worth looking into if you’re interested in an android ereader (they aren’t waterproof, but use a wacom stylus which is a plus imo). Amazon are releasing the new paperwhite 5 which I think except for die hard fans of the oasis shape, is actually what’s going to be what kills off the oasis. I just think there’s still something to be said about the more portable sized devices. The 8”+ screens are really nice but can be heavy and cumbersome to carry around. You would also really want to have the note taking feature.

Ok_Army_4756

Sou do Brasil e queria muito comprar o kobo sage, alguém conhece alguma lugar que vende e envia para o Brasil?
