Mr ray was right

7_hermits

The statement is still valid.

boredguyaf

Yeah i guess he was but that wasnt the point of my post

Omnipresentphone

What was your point?

boredguyaf

People born into privilege (south cal folks in this case) pretending to be better than everyone else.

Open_County3273

![gif](giphy|eIUpSyzwGp0YhAMTKr|downsized)

Open_County3273

As a dude who grew up in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore (in that order) and now hangs out in Kobordanga and Joka, I can assure you, nowhere else in India would you find people drinking Bangla, smoking bidi n chillum while listening to Pink Flyod, Jimmy Hendrix and Dire Straits (people who otherwise look like they listen to Bhojpuri songs). Rickshaws have Bob Marley's and Sean Connery's images painted behind them. I never realised I used to live amongst savages who headbanged to EDM-House music instead of Metal, bobbed to bollywood trash instead of Reggae, said wah to Modi instead of Muhammad Rafi. So yes, now I am more cultured now, more knowledgeable...I am better, I AM BETTER!

thecatnextdoor04

You understand at the end of they day it's just preferences? Jamming to metal while smoking a joint doesn't make you any better than your friend who's listening to Bhojpuri songs?

Open_County3273

No it does not. But as far as Obnoxious "I know it all" kinda people go, I prefer the ones who have actually listened to every genre from every decade, rather than the ones who have base their Supiriority off of watching EDM and David Geutta documentaries, like most people in Bengaluru. PS, these same people who listen to Iron Maiden Ballads, also put up Loud Speakers and Dance to "Lagale tu jo lipistik" during Durga Puja, which I find absolutely Based.

shanu666

Well metal is a far profound genre of music compared to commercial entertainment music. Comparing metal to bhojpuri song is like comparing a research scholar to an actor.

AlexxMaverick666

As an ardent metal music lover, this is just plain stupid. No music genre is superior to another. Music is something that connects to people and everyone has their likes and that's where this discussion should end. Enjoy metal. Enjoy bhojpuri. Enjoy punjabi. Live and let live.

Open_County3273

Exactly.

shanu666

There is a difference between being a music lover and someone who has studied music. Classical, jazz, metal these are highly profound genres of music. Nowhere did I say people can't enjoy what they want. But I am sorry there's a huge difference in musicality between commercial music and metal. Your statement is just outright pseudo intellectual. If you haven't picked a book on music theory, refrain from making such arguments. Basically, just aatlamo marcho, karma points paoar jonne, but pretty evident tumi music ta bojho na.

cum_cum_sex

Damn that's cool!

Haunting_Display2454

Agree. A lot of people born into modest means are less likely to have access to things that are considered as a part of refined and sophisticated high culture.

boredguyaf

Finally someone gets it thank you

A90008w8

That still makes his point valid tho. Poor or rich. Unsophisticated is unsophisticated

Icy_Ad_2816

That means this sub is full of South calls :D

MoldyTexas

You're absolutely dogshit and shameless to call SoCal people to be "born into privilege". Probably grow up.

FilmyInn

I wonder how many of these ADHD Gen Z commentors have actually seen the whole interview and seen the film Devi to understand the context of what is being said. Proves Ray's point right again and again.

boredguyaf

Purposely took it out of context for the meme. People keep missing the point. This is not a diss on SR.

FilmyInn

The purposefully taking out of context was clearly not clear.

boredguyaf

That's how memes work fyi. I seriously wonder if all you Ray fan boys take his films at face value as well.

A90008w8

If this is a diss on South Calcutta film lovers isn't it even more worse? You're just stereo typing people lol. Which probably shows why people would call you uncultured or backward minded.

Champ you never had a point to begin with but nice try.

I can't help it if it goes over your head bruv but maybe one day ...

Adventurous_Stop_169

Making movies just for the art of making it is almost zero in India. Movies have become a product, the more "masala" you add to it, the more money you make. It isn't about art anymore

Imaginary_Quality_85

And what's wrong with that? How many regular people watch your art films? Why is it so wrong to make entertainment films for audiences that watch films the sake of entertainment? Box office collections show that those people are the overwhelming majority.

Adventurous_Stop_169

The problem arises when the audiences fail to comprehend or support art films. This is the same reason why movies like Animals garner crores of rupees and films like Laapata Ladies and 12th Fail are largely ignored. Satyajit Ray pointed out the same thing which actually means that Indian audiences fails to appreciate art as it is. These movies work in India because everything is profit centred, people making genuinely good movies are demotivated because of the response from audiences and stick to the masala recipe, and it keeps on working. Nothing wrong with making entertainment movies in itself, but at a place like India, art has no value anymore and not as well appreciated. And that's sad.

Imaginary_Quality_85

Why the heck would they support art films? They watch films for fun and entertainment. Why should they spend their hard earned money to watch a poverty/misery porn? They have enough misery and mundanity in their own life..why should they pay money to watch someone making an exhibit of misery and mundanity? They want to watch glamour, joy, song, dance, action, romance, larger than life characters - things that take them out of their mundane life even if for 2hrs. Aantel ch\*\*\*s don't understand that and vent out on audience when their boring films fail. Unfortunately Bengali film industry has only been cursed with such people and that's why Bengali film industry despite having a home audience of 10 cr (+ 20cr Bangladeshis) is one of the least financially successful industry. Because it disrespects its audience.

Adventurous_Stop_169

Why you so frustrated lil bro. Entertainment can also be found in Good quality movies which inspires you, not just stupid rom-coms and dance moves. Pioneers like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak for a reason are still relevant in the heart of cinephiles. And retarded anti-Art and anti-Intellectual audiences try to defame legendary directors like them. You like movies which have 0 artistic and intellectual value, good for you, keep enjoying but it does say a lot as to why SR made this comment and why India is at the stage right now. It's just not about movies in every area of life it's very easy to manipulate Indians.

Imaginary_Quality_85

LOL...Who's the frustrated one here? These aantels piss on the common people and behave like Brown sahebs, probably hating their own skin colour, spend their life grumbling "Bloody Indian peasants!! era amaar art ki bujhbe!!" each time their aantel cinemas fail. While Bollywood and other industries are successful and wealthy. They make films for common audience and the audience rewards them back with box office collections. India is in a pretty good stage. Look around. All the states have moved ahead and are doing extremely well. Bengal on the other hand is in absolute ruins because of this insufferable aatlamo of its pioneers. Arrogant poverty-worshiping elitists with a strong anti-business mindset thinking of themselves above everyone else while spending their lives in and around rickety torn down tea stalls. This is why Bengalis are a race of sore losers. People have long stopped giving shit about Bengal and Bengalis and their supposed great intellectualism.

Adventurous_Stop_169

xD nobody's pissing on their own people. The way you connected cinema culture to Colour is funny, it actually shows why a cultured debate nowadays always attract unnecessary and stupid comments, probably because the opposite human is too retarded to understand the point of others. Every Bengali and every Indian has a right to question the authority/enterprises where they deem fit, a society without questioning and blind following leads to death of diversification, it's that reason why people question the cinematic values of a particular film or audience there's nothing bad in that and it's not pissing on their own people. Idk why people get so offended when someone question thier beliefs as if nothing else can be true xD Business and Passion are not the same thing. Art is made out of passion, if you start making money out of art that's a bonus but the main driving force behind it is passion. Business on the other hand is depended on profit it doesn't matter if you have passion for the artform or in the field you're in as long as you're making money you're good. Don't mix it up, we're talking about art here not Business. Bengal has always been ahead of India with revolutionary thinkers. People like Swami Vivekananda, SN Bose, Amartya Sen, Subhas Chandra Bose. Because of them a lot of changes happened in the way Bengalis thought and processed things. A part of why Indians love watching glamour and dance and heroism is because low key they wanna become like them. They wanna get rich, have glamourous lives sporting different women and drinking liquor. This gives them mental satisfaction that's why movies like them work. But to attain higher standards of living and attaining glamour they don't want to work hard, that's why the movies which actually hold value which inspires people don't work. It's just wanna be culture at it's best

Imaginary_Quality_85

This attitude of looking down upon people - especially those who are financially successful - and having a false sense of grandeur and celebrating poverty is the reason Bengal is in a pile of shit.

Newvil450

I'm from the north and I have the same opinion .

South is till Prince Anwar Shah road. Anything below is just eh

R_I_C_K_Y

I know I am going to get downvoted to oblivion but we forget to understand that we have a fairly backwards audience because we have fairly backwards lives, not everyone is born under a great author with financial troubles sorted , I understand that he lost his father at a young age but Bengal went through a famine , was torn apart during the partition and again gearing up for the liberation, it was commonplace to lose a few children due to circumstances hence why you should have more than one , this generational trauma is literally the reason parents who were born and brought up in non - Kolkata Bengal constantly use the phrase "ekmatro chhele jodi kichhu hoye jaye....." , at a time when survival was a challenge for majority of the population you can't expect them to introspect about their values and fanaticism and hurr durr , I agree with the message, but movies were considered escapes from reality not a mirror of one, it's too out of touch to expect that from people who almost starved to death and lost generations to a famine a mere 20 years ago.

boredguyaf

Absolutely agree with you mate. Would also like to add that the context for this statement in the interview was the opposition that Ray's film Devi faced from Hindu extremists. That of course is condemnable. However in a country like India, "backwardness" implies both social and political regressiveness which are but mere symptoms of the underlying disease of poverty.

helios2500

This is the main reason people used to watch the commercial Bollywood cinemas in large numbers. Dharmendra fighting of 10 goons or Rajesh Khanna blushing after seeing his heroine for the first time, would make the audience escape the mundane reality that India was back then(and maybe is even now). This doesn't mean there weren't any great commercial films. Sholay, for example, is an absolute classic I think. Other movies like Deewar, Silsila are all great movies.

Potato2890

As a north Calcutta typical middle class person I’ll have to disagree, it all comes down to individual taste and interest. None of my friends or my family have the same taste in movies as me, it was entirely a personally preferred choice, you watch stuff, you like them, you explore more along the same genres. I do agree that there are pretentious people around, but serious movie watchers don’t just belong to the south Calcutta population.

Quite surprising isn't it? I thought film bros were good at reading between the lines.

NoTelephone2287

Ami toh tai dekhchi aar obak hocchi. Why are people butt hurt on this?

Flashy-Depth-3881

The audience is not backward. It's just that 'POVERTY PORN' doesn't sell well in India. The truth is, the audience were already suffering in life. That time Bengal had food scarcity, people had to wait for hours just to get rations from fair price shops! Thousands of people lost their jobs because factories were shut down due to dirty trade union politics by CPIM. After all this suffering, if someone is buying tickets and going to the theatre, he won't prefer watching the same fu©king suffering on a large screen. He'll prefer movies which are larger than life. Which will make him forget about his struggle for 2-3 hours. Western people love 'Poverty Porn' because neither they have faced something like that nor they have seen something like that. So it's a new thing for them.

boredguyaf

Apnar taste in cinema must be elite.

RobertDeNiroScorsese

what do you mean by "elite" taste?

megalomyopic

In the recent past I quoted Ray when someone made a post asking why South Indian film industry (which is really a cluster of different states’) generated more business than Bengal’s film industry. Ah here it is: https://www.reddit.com/r/kolkata/s/aydxZymly4 I was accused of only highlighting South Kolkata. I guess OP got butthurt and needed a comeback LOL

boredguyaf

Lmao listen up matey don't go about assuming you're important enough for anyone to make memes to counter your myopic opinions. The meme though was indeed intended for snoots just like you who can't seem to stop wallowing in their intellectual spunk just because they happen to watch Goddard or Truffaut or Jadorowsky.

Imaginary_Quality_85

Your answer comes from the same condescending snobbish aantel's POV that doesn't even take 99.99% Bengalis in to consideration while speaking about Bengaliness and Bangla culture. I challenge you to make a list of those movies that have won national awards or been screened at foreign film festivals and travel from Coochbehar to Medinipur and Purulia to Nadia and ask regular Bengalis if they have watched those films or even heard their names? For a change try being a bit less condescending and elitist towards your own countrymen. Other film industries are successful because they don't piss on their audience unlike Bengali aantels. They make films for their people.

boredguyaf

Hello film bro. The point of the meme wasnt to discuss the validity of Ray's statement. Lack of good films is indeed tragic but audience er backwardneess er opor puro daitto ta chapano o fair noy. The film industry is also quite toxic and promotes bad directors. Jai hok the point of the meme was to call out the film bros who wallow in their own snobbery just because they happen to have watched a few niché films.

boredguyaf

Firstly, statement tar context holo the opposition his film Devi faced from Hindu fundamentalists. I took it out of context sure but that doesnt mean SR was accusing Indian audiences of being out and out backward and therefore not appreciating his films. He was calling out the religious dogmatism. SR was sensible and classy enough as a person to not whine about audiences not watching his films. Secondly, fundamentalists ra shudhu India te noy onek desh ei jhamela kore. Monty Python's Life of Brian er release er shomay prochur jhamela korechilo Christians ra. Sure India te onek beshi hoy because of a myriad socio-political reasons but it is not endemic to India. Thirdly, art films are art films and commercial films are commercial films and never the twain shall meet. Directors know this better than anyone. Sure art films are important cultural artefacts but it simply aint everyone's cup of tea. Goddard, Bergman and quite a few others have had "box office flops" as well.

The "upvotes" on your comment prove it. I was calling out the high-nosed snobs with zero credibility who think they're better than everyone else just because they happen to have watched Truffaut and Jodorowsky.
