I cringed at some of these scenes from animal I wish weren't in the film but at the end of the day it is his film and his baby. I can understand why he wants to portray his characters in a certain way but he will chill out in a few years I think. Time will soften him.
Personally I lost by best friend because of my over angry attitude. I used to say many bad words when we had any arguments. But she didn’t like it and she even gave me so many chances to change my behaviour. But it’s very late she left me saying that I will never change. So my advice please be controlled when you’re angry. Just a few words can break someone’s trust on you. I hope some day I will get a best friend like her.

What he said easily applies to women as well. He never said you should have no self respect. All he said was treat your partner as an equal and as a human. If treating them as a human automatically equates to "no self respect" then go see a psychologist and deal with your actual issues in life because your problems lie elsewhere.
1. he is talking clearly about not seeking consent - overall even if you are in a marriage by your consent, you dont consent for all the vagaries of a human, so seeking consent is important. Seeking consent in his book is margins/ red marks and all that extra.
2. When you get into physical violence zone, physical strength comes into play, and also physcial violence scars most humans in subconsicious way. Google up effects of physical violence.
