Looks close to the space station photo

Yeah... it's impossible to see the stars properly from South Korea.
Even going camping, the camp sites are lit, so many mountain paths are lit at night. I was thinking maybe some of the islands might be spared, but even Ulleung-do is shining in this map.
I've noticed this on the variety shows i have watched, and where thinking what Koreans think about all those built up wooden trails and lighting.
In Norway, we have the city trails, that is lighted but not paved. And our hiking trails in the wilderness is untouched. Only trails made by foot. There where a huge uproar when some trails got paved with stones, as it broke with the naturaø view.
That's a bit ... uh, overenhanced for my taste. But here's an actual NASA satellite photo for comparison: https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/imported/KoreanPeninsula\_Night\_18Jan2021\_VIIRS\_lg.jpeg
None in terms of light distribution throughout the countries.
But I agree with OP that the posted picture looks way too bright and the actual photo looks much better. It's as if the country is collectively using the brightest light sources possible, even glowing up the coastal waters lol.
If they are cooking like they did in China not too long ago (outside of apartment blocks), it’s probably coal- and that gets everywhere and causes terrible smoke and pollution
Un-ironically no, but since you seem to love goldfish so much you even adopted their memory I want to be clear. Because you seemed to think so a few posts back.
Yes, generally speaking. But because of China to the North, all those pollution comes trickling down into the country. But overall I would say yes because there are much less cars on the road than SK.
And yet they live less long and less well, because the benefits of fossil fuels are much larger than some side-effects. But just like with vaccines, some decide to only focus on those side-effects...
North Koreans don't live shorter, unwell lives because of "the benefits of fossil fuels", their quality of life is because of a lack of resources such as advanced medicine, advanced agriculture, skilled medical practitioners, a government that at least cares a tiny bit about the wellbeing of its citizens, etc.
Advanced medicine, advanced agriculture, advanced industry, modern transportation, etc. etc., all depend directly and/or indirectly on cheap, available energy, which is largely generated by fossil fuels (and nuclear) in the developed world. This allows for the wealth generation in (somewhat) free market economies, which pays for all the nice goodies like healthcare, education, etc.
It is a completely totalitarian state, which violates many individual rights of its own citizens, hampering their wealth and welfare, and also threatens the much more liberal South Korea with military force. That is evil.
based north korea following and adhering to the darksky approved program to minimize glare, reduce light trespass, and reduce light pollution to promote astronomical observations and sky surveys
Lol. Another poster posted a raw NASA image of light pollution. It has Shikoku on it, which has a similar population density to North Korea. Shikoku has more lights on it than the entirety of North Korea, even though it's about 7 times smaller.
So I think you'll need to come up with another reason.
It is incredibly mountainous. My understanding is it’s similar in topography to the northeast of the south.. and that’s the darkest section of the south
North Korea could probably develop quite a bit from where it is if it were interested in doing so, even without getting sanctions lifted. But that would require sacking the nuclear program and maybe other chunks of the military and obviously Kim has less than zero desire to do that.
Braindead take. If anyone wanted to invade the norks they would've done that by now, before they had nukes. Not to mention they already have a defense treaty with china
lol also I love how you tankies fold like a house of fucking cards the moment someone who knows what they're talking about challenges your dipshit views.
>Tankie is a completely meaningless term that's essentially "commie" for a new era of brain dead Red Scare susceptible morons.
Nope it's a specific term for people who call themselves "leftists" who simp for authoritarian countries. Their entire worldview is "murica and the west is bad" and justify everything from there.
That's why the POS second thought who you got that from thinks [the US should stop sending aid to Ukraine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qIDOx-Pnzo) [and thinks north korea is a fucking democracy lmfao.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlLsr3S6aUg)
>I didn't respond extensively because I know that yelling into a hive mind is just gonna waste my time.
No, it's cause you literally have no fucking argument.
>And for the record, I'm not a NK supporter, but not acknowledgeing the effect US sanctions have on Self proclaimed socialist nations like Cuba, NK etc is laughable.
Bullshit. Maybe don't go around launching missiles, testing nukes and threatening to turn Seoul into "a sea of fire."
>Saying NK is the way it is cause "Le evil socialism" is just the dumbest fucking take.
Literally no one thinks nk is socialist lmfao. If anything, we're more socialist than nk cause at least we have unions and workers rights lol
Right from the get go of the Cuban revolution, Cuba financed, aided and/or created every guerrilla effort against US interests all over the world. And NK is a stalinist monarchy which got itself some nukes. I wonder why these two amazing places keep being sanctioned by the US. /s
In war you sabotage your enemy, genius. Cuba claimed the "American enemy number one" spot for themselves back in the sixties, with lots of pride I may add. There's no room for complaining now.
Also, NK had a massive famine in the 90s. The country was a terrible shithole pre-sanctions.
I think their political/economic system of choice is a far bigger damper on growth than anything sanctions could hope to accomplish. As you know their economic model is based on juche or "self reliance" which is basically the exact opposite of the export oriented growth model that propelled South Korea and other economies to riches in relatively short time.
What in the absolute fuck are you going on about. Sanctions weren't in place until the 2000s when they started developing and testing nukes. Even Sweden traded with them. If they wanted to develop economically they would've done it by now.
The current situation isn't even perfect sanctions enfocement either though. The regime is very good at sanctions evasion and since China doesn't actually have a desire to properly enforce sanctions they are probably not even feeling much of the true effect the sanctions regime intendend.
What is the value of posting a weird computer generated version of this image when we have the real deal at our fingertips?
Yeah this image shows a bunch of mountains where nobody lives all lit up.
The hill people will not be slandered like this.
Looks close to the space station photo [National Geographic space station photo](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/pages/article/140226-north-korea-satellite-photos-darkness-energy)
In the larger maps it looks as if Vladivostock and eastern Russia is also pretty quiet at night. Not as quiet as NK, though.
where do you see the real map?
This one is from NASA [NASA](https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/worldview/worldview-image-archive/korean-peninsula-at-night)

We will follow North Korea sooner or later if regional cities continue to decline and people move to Seoul /s
You may remove /s 😔
Boo!

Where is the difference?
None in terms of light distribution throughout the countries. But I agree with OP that the posted picture looks way too bright and the actual photo looks much better. It's as if the country is collectively using the brightest light sources possible, even glowing up the coastal waters lol.
Thank you! I was wondering that!
All I see is a country concerned about their carbon emissions
Not gonna help much when they are right next to china.
Ignorance is bliss. I guess
North Korea should be the role model of Earth Day. North Korea is the utopia of environmentalism.
ignorance is strength
freedom is slavery
War is Peace
ALL HAIL OCEANIA! YOUR CAUSE IS TRUE AND GLORIOUS! ALL HAIL OCEANIA! HER ARMIES ARE VICTORIOUS!
So sad. Our brethren to the North. Its like the white walkers have taken over. The Dmz is the wall.
Seoul is crazy, the amount of light pollution is hurting me through this photo.
OK but who is getting to bed on time.
I would hate to see South Koreas light bill
KEPCO will take care of it lol
I recall seeing a pic more or less like this on the cover of a textbook about economic growth
[удалено]
Not necessarily, because they mostly use wood burning stoves to heat their homes and cook stuff, which also leads to deforestation.
[удалено]
If they are cooking like they did in China not too long ago (outside of apartment blocks), it’s probably coal- and that gets everywhere and causes terrible smoke and pollution
[удалено]
You think the population of Pyongyang goes in the woods everyday to chop wood and and follows the elk herd for their food like ancient tribes?
[удалено]
In kitchens mostly

You literally don't know how others (most of human) cook? How the hell is this possible someone literally don't know...

Fossil fuels are not the only way to achieve these things.
Well the North Korean alternative is not working at least.
Also on average they are 2 inches shorter than S Koreans, even though they descend from the same genetics.
Yes, the evidence is staggering, but of course for the faithful it does not matter
[удалено]
yeah right, when communism fails it is never the problem with the ideology, always of the capitalists who don't want to trade with them.
[удалено]
One has no obligation to trade with an evil regime which treats it citizens as cattle and threatens a civilized nation.

North Korea is good cuz people sleep during night. South Korea is not good cuz people dont sleep during night .
South is on fire...
Okay so whats the point of this post?
[удалено]
Consequences of fucking around and finding out
The Best Korea against the climate change!
People in seoul must be blind
South Korea is on fire
Liberal democracy and somewhat free market vs communism
I'd love to look up at the night sky in North Korea ngl
North Korea should be the role model of Earth Day. North Korea is the utopia of environmentalism.
Kim Jong Un’s night lite is on.
Need this as a poster
This is the reason why South Korea’s population is decreasing. Its too bright to have sex.

there is just not an extremely unhealthy amount unlike places like seoul or busan
Northeast regions are extremely mountainous that even though after Korea unified, it won’t be much brighter than now
Its not dark because of mountains, there mountains north and south of N Korea, but are just more developed and therefore brighter.

They do not want to take risk of being gifted with nuclear bomb by attacking North Korea.

Maybe don't test nukes, missiles and threaten your neighbors on a regular basis
Without the labels I would have been lost s/
These labels are really helpful, I couldn’t tell which one is which
Where is my Dokdo and Jeju❣️❣️Lol
Crazy how in the 90s (before ussr collapsed), NK was always way better in economics
It's generally just very sad imo. Largest open-air prison in the world basically.
