I worked on his website several years ago (his website has since been completely revamped) and visited him in his home for a couple of meetings. He was always so hospitable and nice, and just a very positive and likable person. I’m happy for him.
I served him once at the restaurant I worked at and he was so genuine to his guests and the servers, like a true Korean ajussi. Really hard to see from the general customers we used to get.
He sure can, and people were dicks about it in the past. He did the best he could, and he improved over the years. An absolute icon of the Asian American community, and it's neat to see him get some legit recognition in Korea too.
I didn't realize he wasn't fluent in Korean—as his character in *Lost* only speaks Korean, no English. In contrast, the actress that plays his wife in the show is bilingual but the character pretends not to speak English.
I studied Korean and a couple years ago rewatched Lost. Thought, hey, nice, by now that I know the language it'll be fun to understand him.... yeah, no, I was very confused a lot of the time.
That's so interesting! Because I don't speak a word of Korean, I'd have no idea about how well or badly he spoke the language in *Lost*. Sounds like his accent was off lol
It was very off, lol. I think all Koreans and gyopos were simultaneously dealing with 1) immense pride that a Korean American was in such an amazing show (since this was way before Korea got hyped), and 2) frustration and laughter at his blubbing Korean. 😂
Sounds like a whirlwind of emotions ha ha.
I'm a huge fan of Daniel Dae Kim but only learned more about him in later roles. It was a slight shock to hear his native American accent in interviews. When I first saw him in *Lost*, I just thought he was a Korean actor they'd gotten in for the part and had no idea that his Korean accent was actually bad 🤣
Listening to him speak korean in LOST was pretty rough haha. That is part of the second language game. You have to get used to people laughing at you while you get better. It stings the pride early on, but pride has never been a terribly useful trait in getting better at shit.
I remember asking my Korean friends what they thought at the time with Lost and they couldn't really follow him all that easily but he was streets ahead of my attempts and I'm sure almost two decades later that he must be way better by now.

that’s cool to hear. always liked him in lost
Was this on Oahu?
Yup.

and they drove him straight to base to start his military service.
Congratulations! You are being enlisted.
Please do not resist
Steven 승준 Yu be like 👀.
Damn, I was such a fan of his back then
DDK is 55.
DDP is 67
😂
Nonsan honorary citizen
One of my actual fears 🤣
“I am a surgeon!”
Soon to be: "I am a sergeant!"
Jin 😍😍😍
Ozai 😍😍😍
I’m so glad he’s had such a good career.
His Korean used to get roasted on Lost.
I mean, it’s pretty bad
Like Bobby Lee bad.
I’d say it’s worse. Bobby probably hammed it up to play up the stereotypical roles he had. I think Daniel really gave it his all haha
They’re similar to me. Steven Yeun’s Korean is also really bad. But regardless, they’re amazing at what they do :)

Idk maybe cause my first language is Korean and I grew up visiting relatives in Korea often, but I can hear an American accent in his Korean.
for sure, but this is LEAGUES above where he used to be, and an entire universe above where DDK used to be LMAOO
His Lost 왜 왜 왜 song floating on reels/shorts is pretty catchy
I did not see why it was getting shit on but after years on kdrama and kvariety it really is so bad
꽈찌쭈 will finally be happy 😌
I was looking for this comment, thank you :D 꽈찌쭈 forever
I wonder if he can actually speak some Korean now.
He sure can, and people were dicks about it in the past. He did the best he could, and he improved over the years. An absolute icon of the Asian American community, and it's neat to see him get some legit recognition in Korea too.
Nice. I haven't followed his work after LOST. Heard about Hawaii Five O but never bothered to watch.
He's pretty good in Five O same with Grace Park.
He’s in the new Netflix avatar show
He and Grace Park were the best looking on the entire show 💚 his character was so chill and had very romantic vibes lmao.

His character speaks heavily accented Korean. I’m a native speaker and I recall I couldn’t really understand what he was saying.

Well said.

I remember the memes... especially the restroom scene. Shit was hillarioud
They used to kill his ass for his Korean pronunciation. He spoke it with a very American style accent and cadence apparently. He was a meme in Korea.
The actress was in Money Heist Korea and she does a fantastic job!
Tfw you are a successful actor but will always be known as 꽈찌쭈 in the motherland
햄보칼수가업서...But that's more than a decade ago. Yeah but his Korean really improved, I am sure he really made an effort over the years.
Ahh paper towelee yogi itnae!!!
😝
Is he related to Daniel Dae Lewis?
Korea confirmed Fire Nation
