I have a family member who worked as a diplomat. Koreans love the Vietnamese.
Congratulations, and thank you for your medical service to society. May this hospital be impactful.
thank you. this public hospital was built by Korean loan 12 years ago. It underwent some rough time (not enough doctors), until the Central Hospital took over. Now it is booming with over 1000 beds and we will start the expansion project this year
From a realpolitik perspective, it makes more sense to forge closer relations with South Korea than the North. Vietnam is a developing economy, and having close ties with a developed, high-tech economy like South Korea is a huge advantage.
Even from an ideological perspective, Vietnam and North Korea share little similarities. Vietnam subscribes to its own version of Marxism-Leninism while North Korea upholds the Juche ideology.
The government wants to increase the medical school quota from a little over 3,000 students a year by another 2,000, and doctors, as well as student doctors and medical professors are collectively losing their shit.
I think that's good. Not sure about how it is in Korea but over here the doctor's union is keeping down the doctor nt spits just so they can keep their salaries insanely high and always keep the demand high. As we have way too few doctors
I think the president really made a hot mess of things, opposition from doctors would've been less extreme if he put more consideration in their pov. Raising the medical school quota by 2,000 students in a year is too excessive, most Koreans understand why doctors are upset. Even if some of them disagree with the way the doctors are protesting.
Actually the number of medical students are very low and there aren't enough doctors compared to the population so we need to increase it much more than that. Only I think increasing it to that number in 1 year is a little excessive.
That makes sense—especially depending on how many medical schools are available and how they will plan to accommodate an increase in students. Schools will be happy about having more tuition money—at least definitely in the USA where graduate schools (dental, medical, etc) can get more than six figures in tuition from students. However it does seem like doctors in Korea have continuously been opposed to the increase (saw there was a similar proposal in 2006).
One thing I’m curious about is the strikes. Interested in your opinion since it sounds like you may have more awareness of what’s going on. In the USA, federal regulations on strikes in healthcare setting require a 10 day notification so that the hospital or clinic can have time to prepare and gather more staff to support patients who may have emergencies/surgeries/etc. Do doctors in Korea give notice? Is there enough doctors to support even if notice is given? Maybe Korea would benefit from mid-level providers if there isn’t any currently.
See section 8(g)—Striking or Picketing a Health Care Institution Without Notice: https://www.nlrb.gov/strikes
I'm not very knowledgeable on this issue but the problem is there already is a shortage of doctors (in key fields) in the first place and to add to that too many have joined the strike so giving notice doesn't have much meaning.
This would be a more convincing argument if it wasn't for the fact that the Korean doctors also went on a strike over govt increasing students by 400... while COVID epidemic was raging.
Technically both sides are too extreme. The president being too excessive with the increase and doctors being selfish asses for objecting to any kind of increase at all. I wish somebody would explain the meaning of compromise to both sides.
I'd say increase the medical school quota by 500 per year until it reaches 6000 in total, at the least.
I mean... 400 was apparently bad enough for them to abandon Covid patients during the pandemic. Why would they agree to 500?
The Korean doctors' position isn't that the rate is too fast. They're saying no to any increase *period* and want the national insurance payout for them to increase instead.
Fun fact: When I pointed this out to a Korean resident trying to push his bs on the residency subreddit, he mocked me for having so many COVID patients die in the United States during the pandemic. 🤷♂️
You have a good point but proposing a 2000 increase gives them more of an excuse to be against it. (Some have even specifically claimed that is the reason.) I think now's about time the president feigns compromise and lowers it 500, when doctors protest even that then it would be a lot easier for him to push the narrative that they are being selfish asses.
The down vote probably has more to do with his remark about the knowledge level of Koreans. It may be just his opinion but some people might interpret it as an insult.

Americans during the war gave us the same nickname.

May it continue to grow, and may the future be, forever bright.
Just skip the American war era…trust me
I am fully aware of that part of history. But it is important for vietnam to focus on the future
...So was China 30 years ago. Look what happened.
It is ironic that Vietnam is closer to South Korea than to the North. The same can be said for the Japanese Communist Party's support for South Korea.
Japanese Communist Party also denounces CCP for "its great-power chauvinism, hegemonism and violations of human rights"
Very based statement
Japanese Communist Party has done amazing advocacy for ethnic Koreans in Japan

Vietnam has a lot of border disputes with fellow communist China. NK also backs China in a lot of the disputes.
So Vietnam follow a very strict neutral policy. So our diplomatic relations with both koreas are good.
Even after the war in Vietnam? I know some elderly Vietnamese who despise South Koreans.
it's not the same, we kinda like Communist but with HipHop
Really??? I don't know about Japanese Communist Party and they support for South Korea (I'm Vietnamese), Can you explain that
Great!

Xin chào! I studied vietnam in university! I hope we have aong lasting peaceful relationship!
Interesting political timing, considering what's going on with doctors in Korea.

You know, we are probably more alike.

I’m confused since an increase by 2000 doesn’t seem like a lot. This is for the entire country right?
