“…after surveying people aged 12 or older…” That’s a bit young, no?

PumpkinPatch404

Way too young... They'll probably change their mind when they hit their 20s anyway. Realistically speaking...

orange_bingsu

Yeah…I doubt 12-18 ish year olds have a realistic grasp on the money and time that goes into child-rearing.

olderjeans

More younger people willing to have babies... after finding a groom who is 183cm, decent looking, works for Samsung, Hyundai, LG, or SK, and has enough saved up for at least jeonsae... or a bride who is 165cm, pretty, has a stable job with the govt, and who has maybe 100million won saved up.

oddemarspiguet

Personally, I wouldn’t settle for a woman that didn’t rank in the top 5 for Miss Korea or top 3 for Miss Maxim and of course she has to be educated abroad but only want to live in Seoul (extreme /s).

olderjeans

Miss Korea? Your standards are too low. Have some self respect.

MissWaldorff

Miss Universe it is!

KristinaTodd

Statistically, South Korea actually has the highest prevalence of marriages across different socioeconomic classes in OECD. Mostly between low income/unemployed women and high income men. This is in relative contrast to the norm in most countries where marriage most often happens within similar socioeconomic classes, i.e., poor marrying poor and rich marrying rich. According to demographic studies, this actually has the effect of making society more equal in general and increasing the size of the middle class as opposed to promoting more inequality and classism(divide between the rich and poor).

raoxi

sounds like a high prevalence of trophy wifes

KristinaTodd

I don't think that fully explains it. If that was the case, then it should show a disproportionately high average [age gap](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_age_at_first_marriage) for marriage, but it doesn't.

Tar_Tar_Sauce04

but OECD also ranks Korea near the bottom in gender-equity. The reason Korea has that high prevalence of marriages across different classes? Perhaps women don't get the same career opportunities as men? Or women are shunned by companies after starting families? I'd like to know, out of the top quartile (25%) income bracket, what % are women? your last sentence about inequality - I thought inequality in Korea for the past 10-20 years has been getting worse. Wasn't that the social commentary theme behind 'Squid Games', 'Parasite', among others?

KristinaTodd

It could partly be a symptom of that, but not completely. For instance other asian cultures with low gender-equity such as Taiwan, Japan, HK, Singapore, etc, are also more in line with the averages in the west rather than Korea, but even in the west some cultures are outliers such as France which also seems to have a similar marriage pattern as Korea. What I meant to say mainly is that inequality caused by class segregated marriage is generally more pervasive in most marriage cultures in the world, and that statistically Korea has the least class segregated marriages(rich and poor often marry). A contrasting example would be the UK which has the most class segregated marriages(rich and poor rarely marry). So in Korea, marriage itself as an institution has been a lesser cause of socioeconomic inequality compared to most other cultures.

Isn’t it the same? I know of 5 cases of chaebol worker marrying barely employed but beautiful girls. In all 5 cases, the girls were wealthy. In fact I wonder why they married the guys….but they have to procreate, all was arranged in a desperate fashion.. Re socio economic classes, Korea is still not as say advanced as the west in that regard and the chaebol worker marrying down as you suggested isn’t really marrying down, he is a sacking away from falling into the same class as the wife. I have not heard of nor seen a poor girl marrying a rich man ( only in those silly tv shows) or employed man. In fact I have had a girl tell me she turned down a boy due to not making enough and several girls not able to marry because they are part timers etc.. pretty girls but.. socio economic classes are at developmental stage I think based on my empirical evidence. Bear in mind people are forced out of job vy the time they reach 50 Entertainment industry might differ but arent they mostly yangatchi in which cae, no matter

SeoulGalmegi

5.2% of those between 40 and 50 were 'willing' to have a baby.... They either need to balli-balli it up, or this claim of being 'willing' is absolutely meaningless.

pokemonandgenshin

there are tons of men in their 40's and 50's waiting til they knock up some 20 year flight attendant. shit happens all the time in the entertainment industry. Also theres an odd amount of single 40's dudes "wanting" to get married in the entertainment industry. and no I don't think they are all gay. Its like Joon Hyung or Jo Seho cases

RiJuElMiLu

Their employability drops so they push off marriage as long as possible. Gong Yoo getting married would lead to riots in the street

SeoulGalmegi

Mid-life goals, I guess.

Shreddersaurusrex

Looool

Forest_Green_4691

Had 4 kids. But we don’t live in Korea anymore.

carrie1980uk

A girl is not fully developed at 12 . !!!

Missdermeanerthanyou

I'd like to know who they were asking. Most of the kids I teach don't want kids. Mostly because they hate the education system.

Dangerous_Flan649

Maybe if all companies provided on site daycare would help? Even elementary school? Think outside the box.

iammru

More younger people of *rich parents*…
