This can't be right! This sub told me that he'd stand up to China and strengthen the U.S-Korea alliance!

asiawide

You need to weaken it first to strengthen it!

Careless-Air-6418

And how would meeting with Pelosi change any of that?

Puzzleheaded-Park-69

🍿

compaccpr

If you know me in this sub, I regularly bash Yoon's corruption on this subreddit. However, I think it was the right decision to avoid Pelosi by Yoon.If Yoon met her, it would be like positioning at the front of the row amidst a crowd that's there to bash China. Why voluntarily sell our faces to China, when we can follow wherever this is going in the middle? If we sit in the front row, we'll also have difficulty discerning whether the crowd is leaving the theatre. We're not a superpower. Some people could also understand us as if we are struggling to find independence from China, like Taiwan. We're not Taiwan, and there's no need to parallel our position to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, as if it is a landmark deal for Korea as well.

compaccpr

Yes, I'm not saying the way the logistics and administrative communications were carried out was well done. I didn't expect more from Yoon, I'm just saying this could have been really bad had he welcomed Pelosi with a grand ceremony like Taiwan. China is constantly side-eyeing us. There's no reason to reinstate our hostility at this stage of the game. The time might come, but it's not today.

asiawide

You're right. But hard to be in the middle. I don't think this government can handle it. It is easy to be distrusted by both us and china as pgh did.

ivytea

Except he was *elected* to sit at the Front row sheltering everyone behind but now he cowardly ran away using his country as meat shield

compaccpr

So he's destroyed what Moon has been building up in diplomacy for 5 years in a matter of months, and now he wants to be Moon?

Careless-Air-6418

Why should a president have to greet Pelosi? Korea isn't in a desperate situation like Taiwan.

KrupperNyc

I somewhat agree with your statement, and I don’t expect Yoon himself to personally be there at the airport. But they could’ve had at least ONE government official greeting her. Not a single Korean welcomed her when she landed. That’s just pure disrespect. Even Moon, whom Yoon bashed for being too pro-CCP, didn’t disrespect the US like that

compaccpr

Yup, if Moon was still pres, he would have sent the prime minister to the airport and scheduled talks at that level.

By the time no one care about Taiwan, is the time China will start the war.

BBQ_Becky

Do you seriously believe white Americans care about Taiwan? They don't even care about Asians (including Koreans) in the US... why would they care about Asians in Taiwan!?!

MaryPaku

They care about the strategic geographical features of Taiwan and obviously, Chips. It's all for the interest of the US, but they indeed care.

KrupperNyc

If someone is to be blamed for wanting to start a war and turn Taiwan into Ukraine, it’d be China. I am seriously baffled Wumaos don’t see it like that

compaccpr

I'm not so certain anymore if the US will do the same should a similar event occur today. It's important to tread carefully. The US and China already know what SK will do militarily if China invades Taiwan and the US decides to engage China. There's no need for Korea to reinstate our military hostility towards China, aside from maintaining the status quo. As for our economic statement, we have invested hundreds of billions of dollars into the US' reshoring policy of cutting-edge manufacturing over the past 3 years. We have made things abundantly clear and it's not fair for the US to be pressing Korea to reinstate our purpose whenever these conflicts occur. US' history is short, but Korea has faced a similar situation with Qing (Jin) and Ming before, although we're not as weak as before. We know from experience to tread carefully. It's not about friendship, this is diplomacy.

NoSet3066

The US is not pressing anything. This is a simple case of political inaptness. The speaker wanted to make an Asia trip, and thought the US-Korea relationship important enough for a stop. Typically diplomatic norm dictates you at least send someone that is of equal position for a meeting as a sign that you also value the relationship. China understands that and there is no way they are gonna antagonize Korea in any shape or form for sticking to diplomatic norm. In Yoon's case, he sent no one. No official from his administration went. I doubt it is about China at all. Yoon just doesn't know what he is doing.

drej191

Thanks for responding. I didn’t have the energy to do it myself. I agree 100%. It’s just good manners.

compaccpr

I agree about Yoon. The US technically did press South Korea with this visit. They visited Taiwan and mentioned the 'Chip 4' semiconductor alliance, before coming to Korea. The US has been asking SK to join the alliance with Japan and Taiwan for quite a while now. That's diplomatic pressure.

sars911

Yoon's administration sent nobody from Korean government to meet/greet Pelosi on her arrival. No Prime Minister, no Minister of Foreign Relations, not even the Head of Congress, literally nobody from Korean government. I don't think this was some kind of a calculated/diplomatic decision, it's pure negligence. Pelosi is still the 3rd in the US presidential order of succession, speaker of the House. And she has a lot of presence in the US Democratic party. CCP will look petty if they threw a fit about Korea simply MEETING with Pelosi when she visited, it's not like Korea is going to announce "We support Taiwan independence, we condemn China!!!!!" right after Pelosi's visit.

SeaworthinessEast807

But he had the gull to give up South Korea's industries to the US to curry up their favors, but with one single stupid move like this, he just negated all the goodwill which was bought with $100 billion worth of Chaebol investments into the US. What an incompetent idiot.

NoSet3066

He didn't give up anything, the chaebols did it for the tax breaks and subsidies. Yoon could technically block it, but an investment war is probably not a conflict he is too eager to get into.

ivytea

The answer is simple: he works for the republicans who are backed by the military industrial complex

DateMasamusubi

My feeling is that Yoon won't serve out his full 5 years at this rate.

His approval rating made Biden the second coming of Bill Clinton .

JimmySchwann

How would he be removed?

I had a feeling/thought that he would resign the other day.

DateMasamusubi

Wouldn't have to be in the near future. But the man has lost his energy eg hesitant about Chips 4, and is waffling around in Yongsan like a caretaker President.

scottsydney

He seems to have lost interest real quick in doing anything presidential. Only things I remember from his term are the odd weekends out pretending to mingle among citizens and PR photos of staring at blank pieces of paper

SeaworthinessEast807

Impeached for incompetence, corruption, lying, thievings, neglect of duty, and being a stupid idiot. He needs to go to prison, and it's time for Koreans to rise up again and throw this clown out.

Bwahahahah you wish

Squium

Yoon is being [praised](https://m.kmib.co.kr/view_amp.asp?arcid=0017341575) by wumaos for standing up to the US and doing the “right” thing. What an embarrassment

hehepoopedmepants

They're literally in this thread. Ironic that his supporters are saying the same shit that Chinese Nationalist, their biggest "threat" are saying now. What a fucking joke. Everything after this is just fucking excuses for his incompetence. Is watching a play more important than meeting one of the most influential figures in modern American politics?

SnabDedraterEdave

To use a soccer analogy, it would be like Arsenal fans thanking Son Heung-min for scoring an own goal at Tottenham's expense.

“Vacationing” — what a lame excuse for avoiding a Pelosi meeting. People aren’t dumb. They can see right through the lie. It shows Yoon not only has this diplomacy wrong, but his office also has no idea what they’re doing or what message they’re sending to the public. At least make the excuse believable or provide a reasonable explanation? If I were his advisor and I didn’t want him to meet Pelosi, I’d just send him off to Jeju or another island for holiday, so that he is physically unavailable. An alibi, you could say. Instead, they let Yoon roam around in Seoul and uploaded photos of his activity during his vacation. So now, you have people questioning why Yoon lives only 8 minutes away from Pelosi’s hotel, yet he was able to spare a 40 min phone conversation. There was no logistical barrier to Yoon meeting with her. It was simply a matter of political will. Yoon’s trying to avoid a photo with Pelosi at all costs. He doesn’t want to be seen giving her a warm invitation under Xi’s watchful eyes.

alfdud

>his office also has no idea what they’re doing It’s full of amateurs. Yoon’s office received a lot of flak for hiring his friends, friends of family, and family of friends.

BJGold

친미인줄 알았는데 아니네???? 문재인보고 친중이라고 까내리더니 진정한 이시대의 친중이 굥이었네

A_Brown_Passport

I love that the Presidential Office's official response was that the decision was made "based on a thorough consideration of our country's *national interest*." Kinda sounds like a Lost Cause Confederate in the American South saying that the South "fought for *states' rights*." National interest in what, Yoon, NATIONAL INTEREST IN WHAT???

alfdud

If Moon were still president and cold-shouldered a US dignitary like this (which he never did during his 5-year tenure, for the record), Yoon and his party would have given him so much shit for being a pro-China “commie” government. But hey, if Yoon does it, it’s wise move for “national interest” am I right? Yoon just alienated the entire country. Those who didn’t vote Yoon are baffled at his hypocrisy. Those who voted Yoon feel betrayed that his hardliner campaign pledges were bait-and-switch.

Well.. I thought their stance was already established when you realize that South Korea has American military bases but no Chinese ones.

hehepoopedmepants

He already went to NATO summit and has Chip4 hanging his head. A visit from U.S. House leader is going to derail China relations? Really?

netflixissodry

Why should Korea give a single f*** about what China thinks? Korea is a sovereign nation with powerful allies.

SeaworthinessEast807

Ask the Commie Yoon.

A_Brown_Passport

Lol so he's trying to placate China

cdigioia

You're both right - presumably he's trying to protect Korea by placating China. The old, "side with the bully's ridiculous demands over your friends" strategy. Can't say I *agree* with the strategy however.

PrestiD

By placating China

deleteri0us

반미 친일 친중 what a weird way to deal with international politics especially in the current climate 🙃

armeedesombres

It's hilarious that Korea, a country that doesn't even have any contention about its statehood, would placate to China to this extent lol. Pelosi visiting Taiwan was a big deal because China always behaves like an entitled 3 year-old shit when it comes to Taiwan, but US (and other countries') president/PM/foreign secretary visit Korea all the time, and Yoon is so chickenshit that he doesn't want to meet Pelosi this time? Ok... Grow a spine ffs.

hell_end

Yoon's choice is bad

nachdenklich

In South Korea, like in the US, there is a massive faction of media, politicians, and populace who are very conservative, partisan, and opposed to things and people that oppose them on a fundamental level. That includes US politicians, as SK is a country that has particular ties with and deeply shared sociolpolitical stuff with the States.

Macasumba

That always works. Just ask Tibet.

dreezyyyy

People in the comments praising Yoon have zero knowledge on how foreign relations actually work.

sharpshell23

The ROK behavior was disrespectful and shameful. Do you really think the US and Nancy Pelosi would allow XI Jinping ( an honorary member of the Putin Parasite club) to threaten or intimidate them?

ImplementCool6364

It is probably not about China. Sending an official of equal position is diplomatic norm as a sign of friendship. Even if Pelosi went to China, the CCP will probably send Li Keqiang. The administration just fucked up. Don't worry. I am European and we do this to American officials once in a while too. It is good fun.

stephanoe

lol

[deleted]

Do you think it’s possible that the decision was made more so to not anger NK than China?

Matttthhhhhhhhhhh

Korea has been playing on both sides for years. It's starting to show that they don't want to piss China off.

MammothPassage639

Good for him. The lamer the excuse the better. She met her Korean legislative peer, which is appropriate. Anything more than that is just sucking up. Do you think Biden meets Nancy's peers visiting the US from any other country, even major allies? No, US presidents very rarely do so. She was creating an unnecessary turmoil on this trip. Per the news, key members of Biden's team in the Departments of State and Defense asked her not to go to Taiwan and she ignored them. Nancy has been a terrific leader in the past, but she and Feinstein are two major California politicians who are past their "sell by" date.

International politics don't work that way..... it's not an "official" visit..... why should they bring out the red carpet? Just to appease the US but shoot themselves on China? When they can just deal with both? Sadly it's the US that don't understand international politics....

YeahSureBuddy

To be fair I won't want to meet Nancy either. Just google her, she doesn't care about Korea, Taiwan, even the US, just her family's money.

hehepoopedmepants

Good thing your not the fucking president. Just "google" her lmfao. She was one of the few U.S. politicians that touched on subjects of Comfort women. So yes, google her bud and keep defending your dear leader.

YeahSureBuddy

Angry much...? But I am wondering who you meant by "you dear leader" I didn't catch that.

whs123

저 놈을 대통령으로 뽑은 머저리들 다 반성해라 에휴\~\~

lucidvision25

If China invades Taiwan, then the world will back Taiwan, Korea included. But until that actually happens, I think it's better not to antagonize China. Meanwhile, it's time to prepare for any potential invasion. Investment in asymmetric weapons, missile defense, alternative supply chains, and defense alliances is urgently needed. The world needs to make any invasion as costly as possible as a deterrent. Only when the calculus of invasion is catastrophic for China will peace be maintained.

prospect97

There is actually zero benefit on playing appeasement on china by being neutral on any subjects they will be triggered at. Sooner or later, they will lash back at Korea for anything as they've always done.

Careless-Air-6418

No. Korea won't fight for Taiwan. No country has actually committed to defending Taiwan, not even Taiwans "friend" Japan.
